Product Description
Finally, here is a book examining Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and its impact over the lifespan. Most of the published literature and media coverage has focused on ADD in childhood, with debates centering on the use of various medications in its treatment.

In Attention Deficit Disorder, Dr. Quinn looks beyond this narrow perspective to consider diagnosis and treatment from infancy to full adulthood.Chapters address ADD and the unique symptoms and problems presented at each separate developmental stage. In addition to characteristic features of the disorder at particular stages, criteria for diagnosis and treatment protocols are provided. Dr. Quinn's personal and professional expertise combine to make Attention Deficit Disorder an indispensable reference for practitioners-who will be treating a growing number of ADD clients as public awareness increases. The book brings together a tremendous amount of information-as well as dispelling misinformation-to create a solid base of knowledge for effective diagnosis and treatment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Awesome Title from Thom Hartmann
Even though this was published in 1994 it is still relevant and chock full of useful gems for those of us with ADD.He offers many strategies for setting up a work life congruent with ADD strengths and offers advice on how to navigate the pitfalls of ADD in the workplace, including when to bring in a Farmer. This book is especially helpful to those who are, or wish to be entrepreneurs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute must have book for anybody with ADD
This book really helps you to focus on what is important and teaches you how to deal with distractions in a positive manner. The techniques are genuinely masterful. If you want to succeed with ADD in the business world, than this is the ticket.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous for entrepreneurs
Every entrepreneur I've ever known has been a person who could be described as having ADD.And this book, which revisits Hartmann's ground-breaking ADD/Hunter/Farmer theory, and then puts it in the context of business, is one of the best business books *for the entrepreneur* I've ever read.(If you work in an office, 9-5, and like it that way, it's probably not the right book for you.If you want to start your own business, though, this book is the key.)

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
This book just repeats many time management tips gleaned from other sources. Not at all useful for ADD, which was what I was searching for. ... Read more

Product Description
The story of Willie is the story of an intelligent, creative, healthy child who, as his mother says, is "wired" a little differently from other people. Nearly ten percent of school-aged children are diagnosed with ADD-Attention Deficit Disorder-and the condition has vaulted into the public awareness. Now, for the first time, a mother speaks out about the day-to-day realities of life with a child with ADD.This honest, moving, heartwrenching, and joyful account of Willie's first five years details a dizzying parade of doctors, schools, treatments, and therapies, and the inevitable emotional seesaw that ensued. Through the insensitivity of a preschool staff to the psychologist who labeled Willie "brain-damaged," Ann and her husband searched for the key to Willie's bouts of belligerence and excitability, strengthened by their love for him, and by their belief in their son's ability to overcome these challenges. Their-and Willie's-ultimate triumph is an inspiration and a lifesaver for a family facing ADD or any other crisis.

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is the most commonlydiagnosed psychiatric illness among children. An estimated 10 percentof school-age boys are currently on Ritalin. At age four, Ann Colin'sson Willie was charming, bright, belligerent ... and kicked out ofpreschool. Willie, written in the form of a journal, is aninteresting and often moving story about parenting an ADDchild--diagnosis problems, psychiatrists, drug trials. Colin, writingfrom the perspective of a middle-class Manhattanite who wants Willieto achieve, moves from fear and uncertainty to finding the care andschool situation that is right for him. She asks, "What is normaland by whose definition?" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great giver of information and very readable
I absolutely loved this book.It gives an excellent first person view of what is it like living with a child with ADD.The reader follows the mother (the narrator) through her journal entries about coming to discover that her little boy had ADD, and finally getting a correct diagnoses, and then finally finding a school that catered to his specific learning style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for families who struggle with ADD
I am a mom of a similar little boy with ADD and horrible experiences in "wonderful" preschools.I am so glad that Ann shared the storyof Willie & his family. It is a moving, accurate and compelling storyfor anyone struggling to help their child feel good about themselvesdespite unacceptable behavior. My favorite line from the book relatesprecisely how I feel about my son, "buried treasure: Willie's trueangelic sweetness, hidden deep under his symptoms."I am also aPediatrician who knew how to make a diagnosis and start him on medication, but I am only now learning how deeply I have hurt for and with my son as hetried to be a "good boy" but simply couldn't sometimes.Irecommend this to my patients' parents, and am grateful for Ann's sharingand Willie's courage.

4-0 out of 5 stars An inside look at life with a child with ADHD
This was a very close-up look at the day-to-day life of a mother and her ADHD child. The author uses journal entries to track the frustration, worries, behavioral difficulties and lack of acceptance she and her sonface. As the parent of a child with ADHD, I felt that this book wastelling my son's story. It was very specific and accurate, not biasedtowards or against medication, and it presented a personal view of a verypervasive and painful disorder for both child and parent.I wouldrecommend this book highly to anyone who wonders if their preschooler hasADHD, to professionals who doubt the significance of ADHD and to others whowould like to know what life is really like for families like the author'sand mine without all of the media hype and controversy.A very readableand touching story.

3-0 out of 5 stars I am not alone
This is a very well written book about a child with ADHD.I have gone through the last 4 years thinking that I was alone and that I would have to live with my child and her overwhelming problems. This book showed me thatI WAS NOT alone and there are many things that you can do to cope with aproblemed child and there is help to be found. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars practical good advice from someone who has been there
i purchased this book some time ago.i've loaned it to patients' parents many times over the years and folks have always reported the same thing - it is full of helpful advice to parents of children with attention disorders.it is written in an easy-to-read style.it is entertaining.the author offers practical advice for others struggling with a situation that is very difficult to manage.very good.well worth the purchase price, new or used.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful parent's guide
Mrs. Isom did a wonderful job in keeping her book in a flowing informative manner; her sense of humor while taking action to help her child grow into an adult was very apparent. Thanks Marie for the help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful, practical help for parents
Marie has lived with an ADHD kid, and has not only survived, but thrives on helping other parents find resources and help for their kids! Her approach is lively, caring and flexible.Highly recommended by a clinical psychologist/neuropsychologist, who offers EEG biofeedback in her practice!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Approach
As a mother of three, all of Marie's approaches can work with any child. It gives great alternatives in helping your child get past sticking points. It also helps parents understand that each child is different and needs to be treated as such.I think it is great that someone finally gives parents a new out look on how to deal with such a special child.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Road Map for Parents with ADD/ADHD children
I have been a psychotherapist for 20 years and find this book to be extrememly helpful to all parents of children with attention deficit disorders. Most books on the market written for parents are written by professionals - mostly for professionals. If you want a good, "when, where, who, what and why" of add/adhd, then this is the best book I've come across.I love Marie's overview of alternative practices which include:Holistic Medicine, homeopathy, hair analysis, bio-feeback/neuro-feedback, rapid eye technology, applied kinesiology, meditation, relaxation techniques, massage, acupuncture, acupressure, chiropractic adjustments, the use of color, art therapy, magnetic field therapy, music and toning.
This is not a one size fits all book - lumping all of our children into one category "needs drugs."This is a book from the heart, from a mother who deeply cares about her children and went to bat for them. The squeaky wheel does get the oil, and in my book as a psychotherapist, a good mother speaks up, and speaks up, and speaks up - until heard.I very much enjoyed Marie's refreshing humor - her care and concern for her family genuinely shine through. ... Product Description
Foreword by George Addair Ph.D.

Raising Humane Beings is the finest book on raising children ever written. Rarely in life does a reader find a single book that sufficiently covers an entire subject. After reviewing Jane's book I found myself thinking differently, for such a book will shift your thinking, and you, like me, will never be the same. I am pleased to endorse both her and her masterful book.

If you don't read this book now, you will in time. If you do not agree with it, time will prove to you that Jane was right. If you reread it twenty years from now you will be surprised at how advanced this book was, and you will then realize it as one of the greatest tools of the decades, not just for our children, but for our world. This book is the finest on this subject that I have ever seen, and it deserves a high place of honor in the world today. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST-READ for all parents...a terrific book for everyone in general.
We need more healthcare providers like Jane Fendelman who can teach us ways to give our kids the unconditional love and acceptance our children so desperately need from us. This insightful book has been an inspiration to me in my quest not only to be a better parent, but to be a stronger, happier person. Most importantly, this book dispels any misconception that parental authority is in any way undermined when we treat our children with respect and dignity. The author gives wonderful illustrations to show us how we can strike a balance in our lives that yields far-reaching benefits to our relationships with our children. "Raising Humane Beings" is a wonderful gift for any one you know, not just parents. I can't recommend it highly enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars best parenting book
Easily one of the best books I would recommend to any parent.Essential reading for anyone planning to BE a parent as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even More Relevant
I find "Raising Humane Beings" even more relevant then when I first read it several years ago, as psychiatrist, physicians, school administrators and teachers seem more intent each year to promote medication as the solution to behavior and learning differences.

4-0 out of 5 stars Raising Humane Beings
I went looking for my copy of this book and realized I'd loaned it out and never got it back. In other words, when I originally read it, I thought it was good enough to share with other parents because it is not so much a "parental fix-it" book but a parental philosphy, one that (from what I've seen) is fairly unique on the shelves of parenting books.
Many parenting books are the "do this, say that, and you'll whip your kids into shape" type, but Jane's work is an earnest attempt to help parents find a constructive balance between love and discipline, nuture and structure, both within themselves and in their parenting, so as to be better able to guide their children. In a round-about way, this is a book that requires something of parents for the sake of their kids. The only reason I haven't given it five stars if that most all of these books are anecdotal and can't cover every parental challenge, and this one is no exception, but for some people, this book will be an eye-opener and so is a must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars grow yourself up
Raising Humane Beings is a grow yourself up book, I think applicable to everybody parent or not. Jane's sound instruction creates a bridge to a new way of living for the health of your home, family and our world! ... Read more

Product Description
By popular demand, Dr. Clare B. Jones has written a sequel to her highly successful Resourcebook for Children with Attention Deficit Disorder. This book, Attention Deficit Disorder: Strategies for School-Age Children, follows children from first grade to their completion of a college degree or vocational training certificate and into adulthood. This valuable resource blends Dr. Jones' sensitivity and respect for children with a set of proven and practical strategies that focus on helping these students become educated.

Dr. Jones also challenges adults to change the negative messages that they unwittingly convey to children who struggle with attention deficit every day. The volume focuses on what teachers must stop doing instead of what they must do. Up to 80 percent of statements made to these students are about things they forgot to do, are doing wrong, or failed at Rather than focusing on what is wrong with these children, Dr. Jones draws on their strengths to build their self-esteem and teach them strategies and coping skills. The resulting educational approach enriches all children and helps them learn, whether or not they have special needs. Through classroom accommodations and a variety of instructional approaches, teachers can individualize instruction to their students' learning activities without relying on one-on-one instruction and extensive individual attention.

Much of the information is summarized in handouts that can be given to the person with attention deficit or to his or her family. An added bonus in this text is a section dealing with adult ADHD. This manual also includes lists of resources, support groups, national organizations, and newsletters that can be passed on to clients and their families. ... Read more
