Product Description
Aurora began as the town of Fletcher, named after the Denver businessman who had staked out the original four square miles for resale along with associates Samuel and Francis Perry. In 1907, burdened with debt from their founder and seeking a fresh start, the inhabitants of Fletcher petitioned to have the town renamed, and in April, it was officially dubbed the Town of Aurora. These first settlers overcame many obstacles on the bare, dry land that Maj. Stephen Long, an early explorer, called the Great American Desert. The outbreak of World War I brought revenue to the area's farmers as food prices soared, and Fitzsimons Army Hospital was established in 1918. Over the years, the scarcity of water has been a persistent problem, but Aurora has nonetheless grown from a quiet farming community to a sprawling city covering over 144 square miles. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a most entertaining book
This book is a rare literary treat, despite the fact that it is not really a "biography"; it is more of a "reminiscence" of Elbert Hubbard, written by a man who knew him very well.I actually purchased this book to compare Elbert Hubbard with Frank Lloyd Wright--two contemporaries who supposedly crossed paths a few times.I had recently read Friedland and Zellman's "The Fellowship," which is the story of Frank Lloyd Wright and his apprenticeship program at Taliesen. In this book, the authors suggest that Wright might have modelled his Fellowship on Hubbard's Roycrofters, and suggest that Wright might have adopted Hubbard's dress and long hair. Thus, I wondered if Hubbard was actually the "superior" man to Frank Lloyd Wright.
Although I have not yet finished the Elbert Hubbard book, it is interesting to compare the approach taken by the author (Shay) toward Elbert Hubbard with the approach taken by Friedland and Zellman toward Frank Lloyd Wright.Shay's approach is one of virtual adoration and total acceptance of Hubbard, depicting him as some sort of perfect human being who could do or speak no wrong.Of course, this is a totally unrealistic approach, even though it makes for a very uplifting and "positive" read.Supposedly Hubbard was just as positive and uplifting in his thinking and actions.
80 years later, Zellman and Friedland take up a similar literary task, attempting to show the world what kind of man Frank Lloyd Wright was, through the eyes of those who lived and worked with him.It is amazing what a difference 80 years makes, as I believe that present-day "biographies" have become obsessed with the "outing" and gossiping (mostly negative, even though it might be accurate) that characterizes today's media. If one compares the Elbert Hubbard described by Shay with the FLW described by Friedland and Zellman, one would easily come away with the notion that Hubbard was a much greater and desirable man than Wright. But, if one compares the physical accomplishments of FLW with those of Hubbard, Frank Lloyd Wright comes away as the unequivocal winner. So, what makes a "great man"?By reading both "Elbert Hubbard of East Aurora" and "The Fellowship," one is presented with two different approaches to answering this question, and I encourage others to read both books and try to figure out which person is more deserving of the term "great man." ... Product Description

Neil Davis's decades-long involvement with the aurora extends beyond study and research. He has also been explaining this magnificent phenomenon to diverse audiences, sharing the knowledge with his graduate students and his grandchildren, with his fellow scientists through professional publications, and with the general public through newspaper columns. His ability to communicate both the facts and the wonder of the northern lights shows clearly in this book.

Starting at a basic level, the handbook begins appropriately with matters of immediate concern to someone who hopes to see an auroral display: what causes the aurora, where and when it is most often seen, and how best to capture it on film. Later sections provide a thorough and clear review of all aspects of auroral science, including the mysterious realm of auroral sound. In a concise and readable fashion, the handbook covers what is known about auroras, encompassing overviews of the northern Natives' legends and myths and the several theories geophysicists have produced to explain why auroras behave as they do. The Aurora Watcher's Handbook includes numerous illustrations, ranging from cartoons to color plates and drawings.

"I am confident [this book] will become the aurora watcher's bible for many years to come." (Sky & Telescope)

"This is participatory science at its best!" (Midwest Book Review)

"A delightful book, highly recommended." (CHOICE )

"A complete course for the layman with an interest in the northern lights." (Fairbanks Daily News-Miner)

"[Davis] has written the book in a smooth, how-it-works style, and his presentation is remarkably clear. . . . [He] expended much effort on this book, forming from his lifetime of knowledge a coherent and comprehensible picture of the aurora for the non-specialist." (ARCTIC)

Product Description
Located in northeastern Ohio, Aurora began as part of the Connecticut Western Reserve and drew many of its first settlers from New England. The city was founded in 1799, with its residents making their living from hunting, farming, and milling. As settlers cleared the land, planted their crops, and raised their animals, they retained their New England heritage, reflected in the many "century homes" found in the town. The area remained largely rural until the mid-20th century, with dairy farmers shipping cheese all over the country and to Europe from 1850 to 1910. Aurora has served as a bedroom community from the 1900s to the 1960s, and Geauga Lake has been a vacation destination since the 1860s. Currently Aurora retains much of its rural charm with Audubon lands, nature reserves, and many lakes and wetlands. ... Read more

Product Description
The year is 1813. Captain Nathaniel Drinkwater succeeds Lord Dungarth as head of the Royal Navy's Secret Department. While the Grand Army of Napoleon faces defeat on the battlefields of Germany, the discovery of a secret treaty with America leads Drinkwater into the forbidding fjords of Norway, and one of the most desperate missions of his career.

Increasingly isolated and affected by the long war with France and her allies, Drinkwater pursues his personal odyssey against often daunting odds.

In a compelling narrative the author brings vividly to life conditions at sea during the Napoleonic wars. The fate of one of Napoleon's most charismatic marshals is linked with American privateers, escaped prisoners and the Danish Navy resulting in a violent confrontation set beneath the aurora. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Treachery and Battle
The year is 1813.The United States has entered the war against England, but it is a peculiar war with U.S. merchants still supplying English armies in Spain.Royal Navy Captain Nathaniel Drinkwater is now assigned to the Admiralty in London, occupying the intelligence office previously headed by the late Lord Dalgarth.Napoleon's armies have been losing battles. Some of his allies have been looking towards their own futures as Napoleon's empire crumbles.Napoleon's puppet King of Naples has sent a secret emissary to England.A plan is revealed to supply arms for a rebellion in Canada.

Drinkwater obtains orders to take a frigate into waters of Danish occupied Norway. His mission is to intercept the arms shipment. There are complications.French and American agents in England, aided by people with Republican sympathies and people who can be bribed, have obtained the details of Drinkwater's plans. There are also unknown agents who have infiltrated his crew.

There is a battle, of course, and victory at a price. The hero survives, of course, as he must be around for the next novel, but others around him are casualties. The end was a bit disappointing.I had thought that guilty parties might be hanged.Perhaps Drinkwater is a bit too sympathetic. And all that gold.Remembering that the young Drinkwater was not averse to helping himself (see Eye of the Fleet), one is left to wonder.Gold sovereigns, at least, were highly negotiable. ... Aurora Leigh (1856) is an epic/novel poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning and the name of its heroine. The poem is written in blank verse and encompasses nine books (the woman's number, the number of the prophetic books of the Sibyl). It is a first person narration, from the point of view of Aurora; its other heroine, Marian Erle, is an abused self-taught child of itinerant parents. The poem is set in Florence, Malvern, London, and Paris. She uses her knowledge of Hebrew and Greek, while also playing off modern novels, such as Corinne ou l'Italie by Anne Louise Germaine de Stael, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, and the novels by George Sand. Through Book 5, Aurora narrates her past, from her childhood to the age of about 27; in Books 6-9, the narrative has caught up with her, and she reports events in diary form. Elizabeth Barrett Browning styled the poem "a novel in verse", and referred to it as "the most mature of my works, and the one into which my highest convictions upon Life and Art have entered."

Roaring, Boring Alice written by P. K. Merski and illustrated by Mark Weber is the picturebook story of the Aurora Borealis told in a rhyming verse by a little house mouse. The charming tall tale introduces readers to the ungrateful Alice, whose loud voice changes into the Northern Lights - until an odd little person offers her the choice to be nice, so that her normal voice will return. An afterword explains the scientific phenomenon of the aurora borealis, noting that the colorful lights do indeed have a voice - swishing, crackling, spark-like sounds that have been recorded by scientists. The Third Law of Robotics states that a robot must protect its own existence, as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws. After the diplomatic failures of the Spacer mission on Earth, Ambassador Ariel Burgess and roboticist Derec Avery are recalled to their home planet, Aurora. Their situation only worsens when they arrive, as they become suspects in another murder--one that could only have been committed by a non-human. On a world with a 20-to-1 robot-to-human population, is it possible a robot could have violated the Three Laws governing its behavior--and if so, why? Or is something far more sinister at work? ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Abnormally small print
I haven't read the book because I'll first need some higher power magnifiying glasses.
What's up with this 5 pt. type?

3-0 out of 5 stars Better than the other two...
...so I gave it 3 stars. This book shares the same problems as the others: way too many characters, subplots, conspiracies and "same old same old". Derec and Avery once again get blamed for the crimes they try to solve, because (of course) all the cops on the case are in the pay of the bad guys, yada yada.

Can't anyone come up with an original plot?

A major character does die, and my reaction was "finally"! That shows how little identification I felt with these cardboard characters.

But I did appreciate the fact that this book went into a lot more detail about the Spacers, the cyborgs and Nova Levis. Finally a character actually does go to Nova Levis!! (This was the one plot-strand that kept my interest.) Also it seems that the robot Bogard is a lot more than we might have thought.Which is treated as little more than an afterthought by this author.

I really can't think of these novels as being in Asimov's "universe", as the dynamic between Spacers and Earthers doesn't at all resemble that of Asimov's novels. Nor do they stand up well by comparison, as Asimov's mysteries are neatly solved and everything explained in the end with crystalline logic, whereas in this series we are left with only a murky understanding that "everyone was corrupt and part of a vast conspiracy that endeavored to spread confusion while they took over the galaxy."

My Asimov collection will be constantly re-read and will always have a treasured place in my bookshelf, but the Tiedemann series will be going to the Book Swap at the next opportunity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Asimov's Aurora
Three book of the Tiedemann mystery series based on Asimov's Robots. Must be read as part of the trilogy. Intrigue, gagetry, politics, woven well into a story that takes place after Elijah Baily while Fastolef was still in power. Ending was a suprise. Where was Daneel?

The book was in very good condition. Will reread and reread. Very pleased with this purchase and will do it again.

2-0 out of 5 stars EYESTRAIN!
It is physically uncomfortable trying to read this book... even with my reading glasses.... the type can't be larger than 7 point, and we're talking about 422 pages! I had read the first in the series and liked the bits about the "Bogard" robot. I confess that I skipped the middle book, but I figured I would still enjoy reading the conclusion of the trilogy. Well, maybe I would if it didn't involve going half blind in the process... but it just doesn't seem worth it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!

I really didn't think Mr. Tiedemann could continue to please after the two parts of this story (Mirage and Chimera) proved to be so entertaining.....but I was wrong, Aurora was an excellent conclusion to this trilogy. I only dinged it one star (the first two got 5 stars) because a character I really liked and hoped to see again dies...oh well.

I whole-heartedly recommend this series!! Worth every penny! ... Read more

Product Description

Italian Divisionism was arguably the most significant art movement in Italy during the last decades of the 19th century. Often misinterpreted as a simple derivative of French Neo-Impressionism, Divisionism actually diverged from the French school in both aims and results. Italian Divisionists were motivated by a basic dissatisfaction with modern civilization and a desire both to endow art with a scientific approach and make it an instrument of social change. At the same time, their work was often deeply Symbolist in character.

This book features many first-generation Divisionists, including Vittore Grubicy de Dragon, Giovanni Segantini, and Gaetano Previati, together with Giacomo Balla, Umberto Boccioni, and others who later launched the Futurist movement, yet were profoundly influenced by Divisionism.

4-0 out of 5 stars A voice....at least
I purchased this book as I'm interested in the study of the art of Italy after the renassiance. A visit to the fine museums of Florence leads one to believe that Italians stopped painting in Italy after the end of the 16th century.Who painted after? How did the impressionist and post impressionist movements influence artists in Italy? What about the socio-political environment? I encountered this book, among others, in my quest for knowledge. This book is worthy of attention to serious readers and students of art. It delves into the sorts of things I had hoped to learn. The image reporductions, I presume, are good though I have not seen any of the original paintings. I took some issue with the monniker "divisionists" as the addition of an -ists to any stylistic approach seems cliche. Further, the term conjures up social and political notions that are not in keeping with the moods and ideas of the artists. With that said, if you are fascinated with Italy and wish to learn more of the evolution of painting styles this is a book worthy of your attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful mixed bag of post-impressionist Italian painting
"Radical Light: Italy's Divisionist Painters" is a well-researched and strikingly illustrated catalogue of Italian painting from the late 19th Century until the years immediately preceding WWI.It accompanies an exhibition that opened at London's National Gallery in 2008 and just closed at Kunsthaus Zurich in mid-January 2009.While there have been hundreds of exhibits of the works of French Impressonists, Post-Impressionists, Fauvists, Nabis, etc., other early 20th Century art movements have been less appreciated and exposed."Radical Light" is therefore a welcome and valuable commentary and serves to balance the scales a bit.

As documented in this exhibition and catalogue, Italian painters of the time were not unaffected by the vigorous creativity of the French art scene, but were building and working in their own social and artistic context. The so-called Divisionists were appropriately enough divided roughly into two separate groups--those leaning toward symbolist painting, drawing on themes and techniques of their Italian Renaissance predecessors, and those interested in portraying modern social and political themes, tying into the growing socialist and populist movements of the time.

Both groups produced some truly wonderful beautiful and emotionally moving artwork which is abundantlyillustrated in this catalogue.Among the artists represented in this publication are Emilio Longoni, Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo, Giovanni Segantini, Giacomo Balla, and Umberto Boccioni. There is both sobriety and flambuoyance in these paintings and the developing trends toward Expressionism and Futurism are clearly visible, particularly in the several paintings of Boccioni included in the catalogue.

This is a great addition to any collection of art history books.Highly recommended. ... Read more

Product Description
Thomas Mallon's acclaimed novel vividly tells the story of a day in May-May 24, 1962. While Scott Carpenter orbits the earth in his Aurora 7 capsule, the lives of a host of characters seem interwoven on the ground below: everyone from a convicted child killer to a famous novelist, a New York cabdriver, a sexually conflicted priest, and a British housewife about to give birth to a thalidomide-stricken baby.

Aurora 7 is above all the story of Gregory Noonan, a spooky suburban fifth-grader obsessed with the space program. The fate of Gregory and his family will prove mysteriously linked to the astronaut's when the boy flees school to watch the perilous climax of Carpenter's mission on the giant TV monitors in Grand Central Terminal. As John Updike observed, Mallon's novel-featuring cameos by Walter Cronkite, John F. Kennedy, and Lee Harvey Oswald-"hones a multitude of details to a gleaming, smoothly oiled fit . . . and catches dozens of characters in its shimmering web."

I was several years younger than the protagonist in this book, but old enough to remember that the space program in the early 1960s was incredibly exciting.I have read most of Thomas Mallon's books, and each has its own flavor and flair for period detail. This one captures the era beautifully, from life in a sleepy Long Island town, to the faded grandeur of Grand Central Station, to America's fascination with astronauts.Mallon writes with poetic nuances. His sentences are exquisitely crafted. His research is impeccable, and when he needs to take license, he states it clearly.I love how he can resurrect times in American history, significant, and less so, with exacting attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wondrous novel of synchronicity and familial bonding
This novel reminds a bit of Damascus by Richard Beard since they both tell the events of a single day with some play between real time and imagined time. But unlike Beard's novel which rockets back and forth between pastand present reimagined and possible meetings between two specificcharacters, Mallon uses multiple characters who eventually all cross pathsin one climactic moment as Scott Carpenter is being rescued from the oceanafter his successful orbit of the Earth in Aurora 7.There are interestingand bizarre historical coincidences peppered throughout the novel like theCivil War reconnaissance balloon Intrepid that flew in May 1862, 100 yearsbefore a Navy ship similarly named that recovered Carpenter.I mostlyenjoyed how Mallon used the actual transcript of Carpenter's communicationwith NASA technicians as a framework for the storyline the takes place onEarth. This novel is thoroughly imaginative and filled with a love ofhumanity, the need for adventure and, most importantly, a respect for thebonds between parent and child.I read this to see if I would truly likeMallon after reading reviews of Two Moons. Now I'm set for his latest andI expect it to be just as good, if not better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Childhood, magic, and space flight combined
What a great book!Aurora 7 follows a young boy as he skips school on theday of Scott Carpenter's Mercury flight, wanders into New York City (whereeveryone is watching the flight on a giant Grand Central Station monitor),and has a fateful, miraculous meeting with his dad.Somehow, Carpenter'salmost getting lost in space (he nearly didn't make it down) and the boy'sfate get intertwinned.A soulful, gentle book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Unknown Mystic
Jacob Boehme is probably one of the most unknown mystics of our time; due to the nature and seriousness of his works. He often cautioned his readers that reading his writings without ernest intention to live the "new birth" life is ternamount to invoking the Holy names of God within one's self, which carries with it consequences. Jacob's writings initiated me into true understanding of the christain faith and the scriptures that have been long misinterpreted by "babel". Jacob believed that any one can arrive at his understanding and wisdom if only they can resign themselves to God and give up selfhood and the insatiable seeking of the pleasures and glory of this world. The divine spark is in all!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for interested in Mysticism
The first important book of a Protestant Mystic (and heterodox thinker), I'd certainly prefer a smaller and/or more manegeable edition, yet the work is inspired, provocative and has been influential in the religious thought

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written
Boehme was one of the most enlightened Christian mystics. All of his works take deep concentration but it enables one to discover the beautiful spiritual truths contained within. Aurora deals with nature and God.

5-0 out of 5 stars Boehme's Aurora
It is very gratifying to see Sparrow's translation of Boehme's "Morgenrote am Aufgang" in print again. Jacob Boehme, the shoemaker from Gorlitz whose life was forever altered by a visionaryexperience, captured the imagination of Emerson and other Transcendentalistwriters. Boehme saw nature as a reflection/representation of God's plan, aconcept which American thinkers found congenial to their intrinsicallyoptimistic world-view. "Aurora" was most likely first introducedinto the U.S. by German Pietists. The original is enormously difficult totranslate (or even to comprehend) in German. Thus, the 19th century readerwas probably just as thrilled to find a translation as we are lucky to havea reprint of the Sparrow edition. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Basic - 2nd Ed
Fantastic supliment contains many useful items for adventurers.I'm particularly fond of the Thieves Corner. There are also several items that are there for nothing more then flavor, like the Death Cheese.I recommend this to anyone who plays or DM's Basic - 2nd Ed D&D.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two words: DROW SWIMWEAR.
Even if this book is a great resource for those little mundane items that are often overlooked, "Aurora's" running commentary in this book regarding the items is worth the price alone. I must have worn out two or three copies of this book in the sixteen years that I've been gaming. I hope that the fine folks at Wizards of the Coast wise up and re-release this for third edition Forgotten Realms (though as others have said in their reviews, it works for just about any D&D campaign world.)

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource
This AD&D book is an expansion of the rules, in that it is a list of things that can be purchased in the Forgotten Realms campaign world. Everything is here, from shaving razors and hats to ink and chisels. Just about all of the items are mundane (only several are of a minor magical nature), and all are the sort of things that characters are likely to encounter and need. Also, everything that is presented herein has a description, picture (if necessary), price, and rules for its use.

Now, beyond the ordinary, what else is here? The book has a rangers' section for outdoor items, a thieves' section for stealthy and burglary equipment, a bards' section for musical instruments and entertainment equipment, a priests' section for incense and other clerical accoutrements, a wizards' section for laboratory items, everyday equipment, food, wines, and surgeons' items (in case you don't have a priest handy). But, the crowning glory of the book is DaRoni's Workshop, wherein the authors bring the works of Leonardo da Vinci's works to life - complete with rules for their use - under the name of Nadul DaRoni!

Yep, this is quite a book and a wonderful resource for the Dungeon Master who wants to add some fascinating detail to his or her campaign. If you want to go that extra mile in making your campaign realistic and interesting, then I highly recommend that you get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Accessory Ever
So, you want to buy bandages? How about inventions only DaVinci could come up with? How about all those odds&ends that thieves need to escape? How about simple laborers tools. This is the book for you. This book adds MANY items that the D&D game lacked.A vial that restores hit points can be bought.Various clothing that improves AC that even a wizard & sorceror could wear is also here (Boom's Garden section).

Pick it up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best equipment ever
Usually your stuck trying to make some goodequipment but with this book you got it all. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sexy Lexy
It's been years since Amber Wyeth left her small home town of Cedar Ridge. No longer is she the shy, overweight teenager she was in high school.Amber is now Lexy, a model, and she's out for revenge on the boy who broke her heart by jilting her on prom night. But even the best-laid plans for revenge change.Joey Hansen is no longer a boy - he's all man and the sheriff of Cedar Ridge at that. Now Amber has to decide what she wants more: revenge or some hot and sweaty sex with the only man she ever loved.

I love a well-written reunion romance, but sadly Sexy Lexy fell short of my expectations. While it's as sexual as the title suggests, Aurora Rose Lynn never capitalizes on the moments where she starts to add depth to Amber and Joey's characters. The result is that Sexy Lexy falls flat (for me) as a romance.Still, if you're looking for a quick and erotic read, Sexy Lexy might be just what you're looking for.

Product Description
Covered wagons brought a wave of migration to northern Illinois in the mid-1830s. On April 1, 1834, the first permanent white settlers, Joseph McCarthy and two assistants, paddled up the Fox River. The vicinity was known as Waubonsie's Village at that time. They built a log cabin, a dam across the Fox, and eventually a sawmill. The village had about 400 Native Americans who bartered fish for bread and tobacco. For almost 175 years now, growth has been steady and sure, and the city of Aurora is the second-largest metropolitan area in Illinois. Aurora is home to honorable civic institutions, excellent education, and a multicultural and energetic population. ... Read more
