An incredible book - should be required reading for all!
I actually listened to the Recorded Books version of this book.It's an old, 1984, stand-alone book that predates Harris' fame and her well-known series'.If I had read the "blurb" I doubt I would have even downloaded the book since my goal for audio books is primarily light entertainment; but once I got into it, I couldn't stop.

Nicky, the protagonist, a successful NY model and aspiring writer, moves back to her Tennessee home town to finish her college degree at about the same time a serial rapist has started terrorizing the town's women. The story is told superbly in first person; my very favorite narrator, Johanna Parker, brings Nicky and her friends to life and forces us to see (hear) the action up close and personal.

As someone else mentioned, this is a serious book with little or no humor.But it is gripping and amazingly well written (I tend to not expect much of a well-known author's 30 year old books that are dug out for public consumption after her name becomes enough to sell them).

Secret Rage has a totally different tone than the Sookie Stackhouse or Aurora Teagarden books - it has none of the "frivolous" feel to it that those sometimes do.Harris examines numerous stereotypes and the ways in which violence, particularly rape, changes all of those involved - victims, friends, family, bystanders, investigators.

I have to imagine it was as painful to write as it was to listen to, but it was definitely worthwhile.I can't believe how much this book moved me and wish it were required reading for both men and women!Get it - you won't be sorry.

Excellent book!
A GREAT book by CH! I can't imagine how I missed this book by her!

A Secret Rage
I have read most of Charlaine Harris books. I missed this series and went back to read them. I always enjoy the development of her characters, its like they live next door in Douglasville or Villa Rica. She took too long establishing this persona for me. The last two thirds of the book did not disapoint, It moved right a long and I was up til midnight reading. I try not to guess who did it if possible, but there was a give away that set my "look closer bells to ringing". This was an enjoyable book I recommend it.

Difficult to read through.
I love CH, but I had a really hard time reading through this novel.I know it was a dark subject matter (rape and serial killer), but it really was an awkward read for me story flow wise.The writing did not flow well, and it really did not have the needed hints in order to let me try to figure out the mystery.However, I read it because CH wrote it and I have read EVERYTHING she ever published under her CH name.It's funny to me to see that she got this published, as most agents always put on their websites that they don't want anything about rape or abuse.Not recommended for anyone underage, as it is really graphic/violent.

geology book
This book is very helpful and interesting. I ordered it used and it arrived on time and in almost perfect condition.

We requested & paid for this to be delivered in 2-3 days. This book took over 2 weeks to be delivered. Since it was a text book for school, my son ended up purchasing the book from another company. I emailed the seller several times with no response. They didn't have a return address label on the package, so I have no way of contacting them to get our money back. Amazon "Market" does not stand behind the sellers, and doesn't offer any support. We will never buy from Amazon again.

Basic Geology Explained
A good overview of basic geology, with plenty of illustrations and charts.Although well written, it assumes some prior knowledge of chemistry and physics, but then at times becomes oddly "dumbed-down."
Still, it is thorough and fascinating and should be a required subject for all high school students.

Great content - not a durable book, though
Okay, let me get a few things out of the way up front. First off, I generally hate textbooks. I've been in college 6 years and counting, and it's fair to say that most textbooks (regardless of subject) are written and edited in a very clueless fashion. Second, though I have many personal interests in the realm of science (quantum mechanics, string theory, and so on), it's often a major chore to study 100-level science at a university. Doubly so if it's a scientific subject you have no interest in - which in my case would be geology.

Back to the topic at hand, this book counters all of what I just said. This is an outstanding textbook by any standard. I'd even recommend it for non-students who have an interest in geology and earth science. Combined with a good instructor, this book makes an excellent resource and a surprisingly enjoyable read. I had virtually no personal interest in geology going into the class, but this book communicates a good deal of practical knowledge as well as just plain interesting trivia.

I do have some issues with the book in a physical sense. Content-wise, /How Does Earth Work/ is fantastic. But the design of the book is troublesome. It's large, unwieldy, and the cover is very flimsy. A book this size should really be hardcover, because the glossy pages are just too vulnerable to folds and tears even with careful use. I take good care of my books, and don't just randomly slop them into my backpack. Even with all my efforts to keep the book in tact, it already has minor creases in the cover, bent corners on pages, and other slight damage. This is after just two weeks of class, folks.

The book looks great, with all the color photos and such... But the physical design of it is not at all realistic for college use. Make peace with the fact that you're not going to be able to re-sell this book for near new price at the end of the semester. Beyond that, /How Does Earth Work/ is a great resource, and one of the very few college books I'd highly recommend to students and non-students alike. ... Read more

Fascinating, Sad, and Uplifting
As a book, "Ravished Armenia" delivered more than I expected.Film author Anthony Slide providers readers with a short essay on the 1919 film "Ravished Armenia", a lost silent film based on the story of Aurora Mardiganian, a survivor of the Armenian genocide.In the essay, Slide describes Mardiganian's exploitation by film makers and even symptoms of post traumatic stress she endured.The film itself featured an odd combination of being used to raise charitable funds and make audiences aware of the terrible fate of the Armenians in WWI Turkey and on the other side it was argueably exploiting cruelty to draw in audiences.For its time, the film was quite successful and fairly controversial for its violence.Slide also includes a number of photographs from the film and even a list of captions for the film.
The real power of this book is actually the reprint of Mardiganian's powerful memoir of the genocide titled "Ravished Armenia."Her story is frankly gut wrenching and powerful.While not accurate in every detail (some of the violence was apparently toned down a little from real life for example), the story is never the less a riveting tale of faith, loss, hope, and man's inhumanity to man.This is the story of a fourteen year old who saw her family practically annilihated by the end, experienced violations and cruelty, survived massacres and death marches, and yet found the strenght to carry on.There are many scenes that may stay with you if you read this short volume.Perhaps it will be the "game of swords" or the torture of an Armenian priest.Or perhaps it was the two sisters who realized they had renounced their faith to save a relative who died anyway and decided not to make the mistake again even if it cost them their lives (it did
).Yes, there are the stories of kindness here from some sympathetic Turks to the monks who hid genocide survivors and gave their lives trying to protect them.Then there are the acts of cruelty which can make one shudder.The argueably most famous scene in both the book and film (and most controversial scene in the later) is likely the scene outside Malatia where Aurora witnesses a row of crucified Armenian girls.The essay preceeding the reprint explains that even this scene was toned down from what Mardiganian actually saw.Even when Aurora escapes from the Turkish controlled areas, she is still not completely out of the woods because she goes to Petrograd Russia as violence and turmoil sweep the streets.Aurora conveys an epic human tragedy though the eyes of youth, despair, hope, and Christian faith.The end result is a fascinating but at times brutal read.I recommend it with caution.This work is not for everyone.

Oh, I should point out that since this book was written, there has indeed been part of the movie version found.A reel approximately 20 minutes long (over 1/5 of the original) was discovered.

The best Armenian survivor story I've ever read
I have read many of the books written by survivors of the Armenian genocide carried out by Turkey, and this is by far the best of them all. Aurora Mardigian (her name was subsequently changed by "Hollywood") was 14 when her story began, and what makes this book the best is also what makes it the worst: she gives many specific examples of how Turks murdered and tortured Armenians, told quite dispassionately but in no less horrifying terms.
I've already bought copies to give to my brother and sister, even at its high price, because it's worth every cent, and so that all will KNOW what the Armenian people went through at the hands of the still-denying Turks.
Those who don't know what Armenia and her people are about will also learn the true nature and identity of our wonderful culture, and all that it emcompassed both in early times as well as currently.

Excellent Book
This book is truly interesting. It explains how an Armenian Genocide survivor's memoir was turned into a motion picture in 1919, a year or two after her arrival to the United States. The beginning of the book explainsthe whole movie production process, and even lists reviews given at thetime of its showing.The movie apparently was very popular in 1919,however all copies of it seem to have been lost. However, the book hasabout 6 still photos from the movie. The bulk of the book is simply areprint of Aurora Mardiganian's account of living through the ArmenianGenocide. It is amazing, sad, sickening. not so much
This book has a few funnies in there but for the most part the book is terrible

Read the description before buying
This book is funny, albeit maybe not to everyone but to those that enjoy tech-humor or who can laugh at themselves for their devotion to a social networking site. It is not a manual on how to use facebook. Which seems to be the problem that people are having with this book, you bought it for the wrong reason. It is meant more for teens and targets itself towards that audience. If you are planning on buying this book I recommend that you read Amazons description of it before purchasing as I feel it makes it clear that this book isn't intended to be helpful. It makes for a good laugh but not much more. If you want a gift for a teen that is spending to much time on the computer then I strongly recommend this book.

Title is deceiving
I purchased this book specifically because I'm old (45), and computer illiterate. Wanting to join Facebook to keep in touch with relatives,I ordered this book to guide me. Unfortunately the title is very deceiving. Flipping through the pages I quickly learned this book was far from helpful. It was completely over my head and I guess was supposed to be entertaining. It might be enjoyed by a scientist or computer geek. It is not for the average Joe.What a waste of money this was,now it just takes up space in my book shelf until I can pawn it off to some unsuspecting friend or relative. Bottom Line: a basically useless book.

Do not buy
I was looking for a "help - "how to" book, nothing of the sort here.
These guys (authors)remind me of the some other experiences I have had with Harvard types:
Such as: the MBA types who suggested to the Department Stores that there was too much open space on their floors, so, put in more displays and load "em up with merchandise. BAD IDEA!

Such as:the Computer wizards who tried to "adjust" proven programing to make it do something it was not designed to do. Each of the programmers were working independently and none of them were the same.. And, each programmer seemed to be in a contest with his counter parts. The "ibmer's" were trying to write a program tofax digital info. These guys wanted to change from digital to analog.:
(during the hurricanes the electric was out as were the telephones. fax machines are analog)
I had a mobile digital system so I scanned all of my reports and emailed them through the satellite.
Really pissed off the IBM guys as well as the FEMA guys that hired them.
And the funny part was they could not figure out who was emailing info in on time. They figured I was too old and from Oklahoma to make it work.

I would have sent it back if it was easier, so I gave it away

Poorly written, poorly done
What could have been a good book is truly disappointing. Beyond the missing elements mentioned in other reviews -- no bibliography, photos, or substantive evidence of any research -- the text is poorly written and badly edited. Dates fly around with no consequece to linear events. A visit of October 8, 1866, is described as concluding a few days later, on October 11, 1867. Diaz engaged in a battle in 1876, and the next sentence refers to his death in 1872. What kind of writer does this? What kind of editor allows this?
Innuendo aplenty, facts not so much. Save your money and save your time; don't bother with this book.

Simply simple
An overly simplistic attempt at history, this book is definied by its failure to satisfy on any level.
Initially I was disappointed by the lack of pictures, and maps, always useful when reading history. As I reached the middle of the book, it became clear that such trappings would have done little to improve matters.
Written with the inexplicable self-confidence of a nineteen year old,the author hovers at fingertips length over history, all the while dispensing with moral judgements, and grand pronouncement of little to no value.
Pass this one up. You will thank me.

Story of a doomed Belgian Princess
I have picked this book because I wanted to learn about the Princess Charlotte of Belgium who was raised her entire life to one day assume a position of a sovereign.She gets to be an Empress not of one, but two different countries.Her reign is short lived in both instances and she spends another 60 years of her life locked up in comfortable surroundings, insane and alone.
Princess Charlotte is married at age 15 for the second in line to the Austrian Hungarian throne.As a consolation prize, her brother-in-law awards his brother Maximillian, Charlotte's husband, reign over Italian northern provinces.Shortly after unification of Italy, the couple is forced out of country.They were in position to choose if they wanted to reign over Greece, or assume new position in the new world and become Emperial couple of Mexico.They chose, to their doom, to go to Mexico if for no other reason than for the reason of not giving up their Catholic faith for Greek Orthodox Christian faith.As North American and Mexican rebels fight for their independence from European monarchies, the young couple looses their standing as Emperor and Empress of Mexico.Emperor Maximillian is executed, while Charlotte spends the next 60 years of her life in European exile insane.Her insanity is a reason for fight between powerful European royal families.Assuming guardinaship over her well-being means assuming control over her enourmous financial fortunes.
This is one of the books that takes us thru fascinating times in both European and North American history. Both continents were being defined by the changing world.That element alone gives book unpresedented twist.However, writing is not as strong.As times it almost feels that Prince Michael of Greece is getting bored with his task of writing this biography.He uses phrases such as "Empress fell of her chair" many times to describe her surprise in certain situations and he describes her neurotic personality by drawing a picture of an Empress who is pacing around the room chewing on her handkerchief, tearing up the lace and damaging the monogram on it.The ambigiuty of the marriage between Maximillian and Charlotte is apparent.They seem to live separate lives, often away from each other for the long stretches of time.Rather than having children of their own, it is Maximillian who decides to adopt Mexican child of royal Actec heritage.Charlotte is marginalized to the point that she has no influence to the matters of state.It seems that all those factors, isolation, lack of cultural life and lack of intellectually stimulating ladies-in-waiting, all contributed to her nervous breakdown and ultimately to her insanity.She gets to live thru it all and she dies at an old age, alone and pieceful.Charlotte's own life story is definitely sad and touching.Book however, could have been written much better as it has errors in couple of chapters that cause interruptions in any attempt of reading the text flawlessly.

Say farewell
This book should have been more informative....and it really wasn't. Charlotte was a daughter of the King of Belgium, 1st cousin to Queen Victoria, sister-in-law to the powerful Emperor Franz Joseph, and yet the book was just an empty shell at points. There was no genelogical table for reference, and no pictures except on the cover to even think about how truely beautiful Charlotte was until she went insane. There is evidence that says it might have been easier for her to do so to escape her brother, but she was certainly (and who could blame her) never able to handle the loss of Maximilian the way she did.

Check this out @ the library, buy it if you really think you need to add it to your collection, but this was not the steller book it should have been. Heres to hoping someone else will do it better next time!!

A DISAPPOINTMENT
Like many of the other reviewers here, I bought this book because I knew something of the history, and wanted to learn more.(Having lived in Mexico from first grade through high school, I had often visited the Castle in Chapultepec, and had studied Mexican history in grade school.)My first disappointment with the book was to see that it was intellectually lazy, with no index, no sources identified.One of the Amazon reviewers generously awarded the book three stars, "because it was an easy read."It was an easy read, but not a particularly pleasant one.Another Amazon reviewer mentioned apparent anomalies in speech -- I wondered as I read the book how much of the responsibility for the slangy and/or pedestrian language lay with the translator.Finally, are there no editors or proof readers at publishers any longer?Not everyone would catch the fact that Michoacán, referred to in thebook as being east of Mexico City, is actually west of Mexico City, but anyone who was awake while proofreading should have been brought up short by the statement that "Porfirio Díaz seized power in 1876 and held it until his death in 1872."Porfirio Díaz did seize power in 1876, he held it until 1910, and he died in 1915.So not only did he not seize power after his death, his death was not the cause of his relinquishing power.Whenever I read a book where I catch such errors, I wonder how much I can trust the areas I don't know as much about -- such as European geography, history, etc. ... Not the best organization, but required for class
The book seems to jump around a little bit, and the periodic table is lacking, but overall its a decent textbook.

Good text. Good approach. Well organized.
We have adopted this text for our Physical Geology sections at our institution. We are pleased with the book, and the students seem to like it as well. We particularly like the emphasis on inquiry.

Very verbose and poorly written, with long sentences and loose organisation of chapter contents.

Teedjous boozy and insubstantial
I put this on my X-mas wish list based on the positive ratings. I ended up with two copies and having read as much as I could handle, can say I'm doubly disappointed. If you want some useful info on north country fishing and more than vignettes as stale as the air in a backcountry bar at 10 am, shop elsewhere. The first couple of chapters held my attention as I waited for some character development of the author's daugher as they travelled together in NWT but waited in vain as she comes off a shallow silhouette making and breaking camp or fishing with dad (some distance away in several senses of the word). I don't mean to impy anything about what she may be in reality, just how she comes accross in this work (albeit I wonder how she will make better choices than caretaker-of-dependant-personality-role inher own life). The balance of the book is strong on the tedium of driving long distance, booze, and a high fat, high sugar series of meals recounted in far too much detail. John McPhee this guy ain't, despite the detail of numerous turnouts and other attractions of Canadian roads. I hate to say it but my lasting impression is that the reality of the trips was a 'vehicle' for the booze and smokes and stoney sleep, lacking much meaning to relate after the guy sobered up. He'll make a buck on this book (or two in my case) but that ain't the same as making amends. As a parting shot, an angling writer who touts all the 3 pound grayling to be caught with ease in various road accessible streams (even in NWT or YT) does the resource a disservice.

A Journey into Forever and Beyond
Artic Aurora, Holt's latest and greatest literary work, guides us through Canada's Northwest Territories and the Yukon. For certain he describes where to find good food, good fishing and interesting places to visit, but this is no travelogue of where to go, what to do or how to catch fish. Instead, as he journeys through this wild, untamed and unfenced area of immense size in his 1983 Suburban, he discovers raw visceral power flows through the land in the Far North. A place where one can gaze out over the beautiful, intrepid landscape and see forever and beyond. Overhead, the aurora borealis dances and flickers with palpable energy. Immense rivers surge over countless waterfalls as they carve and gouge their way towards the ocean. An unseen power sizzles through the land.

As Holt relates his many wanderings across the Far North he writes with a clarity and detail that create rich, mesmerizing visions that roll through the mind. The book is chock full of interesting details about the land, the people and their history. Several amusing anecdotes and stories had me laughing out loud.

As in his book Coyote Nowhere, a precursor to Artic Aurora, Holt reflects on his life and also looks into the future as he bares his soul, warts and all. He shuns glitz, glitter and hucksterism. He hates the exploitation of the land and the people who inhabit it. He is passionate but not preachy. Holt is maturing; evolving as a writer and Artic Aurora deserves a place on the bookshelf next to authors like MacLean, Gierach and Travers.

Running Full Bore in Canada's Far North
Arctic Aurora is a delight. Holt careens around the hidden Canadian northwest in a joyous rage, remarking on the land, the fishing, and the people, good and bad. From ice roads, to mosquitoes, to arctic grayling, and the native Dene, this book gives the reader a true taste of the Canadian north. There have been a number of books written about the arctic these days, but damn few good ones...and Arctic Aurora truly is.

He Does It Again
Holt does it again. Artic Aurora shows us the intensity of the country and the love that Holt has for it. Reading the book made me, a man from the city sprawl of Delaware, want to go up and see the country for myself before it is touched by the outside world. Perfectly detailed, I couldn't put the book down. I felt that the added pictures that only hinted at the beauty of the land helped in imagining what it's like up there. I write this in that John Holt did what he does so well, give us a deep and honest look into the last of the untamed country. It's a must read for those trying to find the last great wilderness.

Greatest contemporary book of the Arctic
Holt takes you on a ride through the Northwest Territories and the Yukon with great humor and depth of thought regarding the land and the Dene, and Inuit who inhabit this beautiful country. He travels in a vintage 1983 Suburban which holds up to the rigorous roads, especially the Dempster Highway, a tough road with spectacular views.Holt's descriptions of the land are the best I've read in any book on the Arctic or any land for that matter.This book is filled with heart, mind and soul of the author.A great read! ... Interesting reading for fans of Shackleton
Although it's currently out of print, we can hope that the recent flood of Shackleton-related titles will provoke a reprint of the facsimile edition of the "Aurora Australis," the book written and published byShackleton's 1907-1909 Nimrod Expedition in Winter Quarters. Most of themen contributed written works including articles, poetry, and even somefantasy (by as strait-laced a scientist as the future Sir Douglas Mawson!),expedition artist George Marston produced illustrations, then Frank Wildand Ernest Joyce typeset and printed the pages, and when everything wasfinished Bernard Day crafted covers from empty cases and bound the books.It is estimated that something from 75-90 copies were made, making this oneof the rarest of Antarctic collectibles. an uneven collection, with a few excellent pieces
This collection gathers essays, interviews and articles looking at aspects of the Zapatista struggles in Mexico, and the way they have influenced social movements around the world. This book does not serve as a good, coherent intro to Zapatismo-- for that, check out Neil Harvey,John Holloway, or Bill Weinberg. There are a few outstanding pieces in the book, most notably George Caffentzis' history of neoliberalism and class struggle in the US since 1973 which provides insightful analysis of economy, politics, and organization, an inspiring speech by martyred Indian trade union leader Shankar Guha Niyogi, Gustavo Esteva's piece on rural struggles in Oaxaca, and a short account of the formation of the Peoiple's Global Action network.
