The title is incorrectly credited to Wandjuk Marika who wrote the foreword. The book is actually a Jennifer Isaacs title. Jennifer Isaacs is perhaps my favorite author on Australian tribal culture. This book is a must-readfor anyone with an interest in this ancient culture. The text reads easily and the photographs are beautiful and large, as is typical with Jennifer Isaacs' books. I'm amazed that her books are not more readily available. ... Read more

This book changed my understanding of "Dreamtime" and opened my eyes to the connection of a place to the people who inhabit it.Where the native peoples of Australia "sing" the land and, through that singing, survive and thrive, I wonder what deeper connection I might have to my own home if I set myself to learn its songs and its "Dream." ... Product Description

In Stories from the Billabong, a renowned author authentically and elegantly retells ten of Australia's ancient aboriginal legends. Here readers discover how Great Mother Snake created and peopled the world with plants and creatures, what makes frogs croak, why kangaroos have pouches, and just what it is that makes platypuses so special. The illustrations are by the aboriginal artist and storyteller Francis Firebrace, whose distinctive, colorful work is known throughout Australia and beyond. He uses the four traditional colors of aboriginal art (black, white, red, and yellow), as well as his experiences as a member of the Yorta-Yorta, to make these stories live on the page. A beautiful, imaginative book to open new frontiers in children’s minds, Stories from the Billabong shows a master storyteller and distinguished artist each at the height of their powers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wise Women of the Dreamtime
The book was as advertised. It is a scholarly work, but moderately easy to read.It came quickly.

3-0 out of 5 stars interesting reading
This book was interesting but not what I expected. Guess I was hoping for more personal accounts than retold mythology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wise Women of the Dreamtime
A very good introduction to Australian Aboriginal stories - the book provides the traditional story and then explains its function as a tool for teaching young people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aboriginal Stories
I bought this book with the hope of finding something more authentic than some of the more popular books on Australian Aboriginal culture I'd read.Though these stories have been collected, translated and compiled by Anglo Australians, my impression is that the authenticity of these stories has been retained.I do believe my authenticity-meter is pretty accurate. However, I have no authority on the subject, and would love to see a review here from someone who does.In absence of such, I hope my review is helpful to others.

Each story is followed by Johanna Lambert's commentary.Lambert draws parallels between concepts in these stories, and myths of other cultures. She also explains the contextual beliefs of Aboriginal people in a way that I found helpful and seems respectful to me.At times the psychoanalytical perspective seems a bit forced when applied to these stories and Aboriginal culture in general.I wonder if psychoanalysis is universal enough to be applicable to something so ancient and whole in and of itself. For the most part, though, I found the analysis helpful, and if you don't, you can just read the stories and skip the analysis which follows.

If your exposure to Aboriginal culture from the women's perspective is limited to Lynn Andrews or Marlo Morgan, I highly recommend you read this book. Also a great book for anthropologists and students of shamanism or global spirituality.Or, if you enjoyed "Rabbit-Proof Fence," if you just like to hear about different perspectives than your own or want to understand the various people of the world, this book is for you.Recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Discussing some Aboriginal Traditions
This book is a commentary on some Aboriginal traditions. It discusses how the Dreaming may reflect actual events in prehistory, as suggested by archeological finds. There is also a chapter on some common elements of Aboriginal belief, including especially the Rainbow Snake and totemic identity.Cowan describes some rites and rituals, and includes a few brief accounts of myth cycles.Other topics addressed are Clever Men, sacred love, and the yellow ochre (funeral) dance.Sources are cited in endnotes collated at the end of the book. There is an index.

Not being familiar with any elements of Aboriginal culture, I hoped to find a concise introduction to Aboriginal religious beliefs in this book. However, this book was not a good place to start for such questions, since Cowan assumes familiarity with many elements of the belief system on the part of readers, and much of the text is commentary on the belief system or its theories rather than description or explanation of the elements of the system. Rather than explain what the Dreaming or the Rainbow Snake are, Cowan assumes that the reader is familiar with these terms, and discusses present historical records or the geographical extent of the beliefs.Perhaps this lack of description is due to desire to keep the information secret, but if so, it would have been appropriate to at least explain the limitation. One bizarre term that Cowan used was "sacred love".From his description, the ritual seemed to be "sacred sex," since love seemed to have no relevance to the context-is this a standard term, or could Cowan have used a more precise term here? ... Product Description
Based on the very popular and moving song by Ted Egan, concerning a drover whose 'boy' is really his Aboriginal wife. The song is set in the 1920s when it was illegal to marry an Aboriginal, and acts of brutality and injustice to Aborigines usually went unpunished and unmourned by the white community. Robert Ingpen's richly evocative illustrations make this a beautiful gift book for adults as well as a unique picture book for older readers. ... Read more

Product Description
The apparent timelessness of the Dreaming of Aboriginal Australia has long mystified European observers, conjuring images of an ancient people in harmony with their surroundings. In this book, Bruno David examines the archaeological evidence for Dreaming-mediated places, rituals and symbolism. What emerges is not a static culture, but a mode of conceiving the world that emerged in its recognisable form only about 1000 years ago. During ethnographic times, the Dreaming was the framework of beliefs through which Aboriginal people gave meaning to the world. All peoples, past and present know and experience their world as already meaningful but changing. This is a world of what the philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer has called "preunderstanding", a condition of knowledge that shapes one's experience of the world. The known and experienced world is a place of culture; not a place that is, but one that has become, through meaningful engagement. The world is given presence - given pre-sense - through the historicity of one's own being. It is the archaeology of this condition that forms the major theme of this book.By tracing through time the archaeological visibility of one well-known mode of preunderstanding - the Dreaming of Aboriginal Australia - the author argues that it is possible to scientifically explore an archaeology of preunderstanding; of body and mind, identity and Being-in-the-world. ...
