4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, easy to read
Great book, easy to read. Makes navigation looks easy. Another advantage is that it is cheap.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for getting to know things from a different point of view.
While Richard's comment about the book might be true, I (private pilot currently doing instrument rating) found the book very interesting in the way that it introduces much of what I already knew (and much of what I didn't) from a completely new point of view. The thing is, pilots are confined in their own way of thinking, and fairly often know much less about the mathematical part of navigation than would be desirable. I personally felt my private pilot ground school was baby talk, the textbooks did not contain enough about mathematics, and it felt good to read something that assumes the reader went to at least high school.

That being said, the mathematics in the book are not scary, I felt the author intentionally did not use anything more complicated than high school math (mostly simple trigonometry), which he also said in the beginning of the book. My math was quite average in high school, and never really dealt with it anymore in university, and it still did not take too much effort to understand most of the book. It did require some brain work to follow the calculations, though. The most mathematical part of the book is the second chapter, "Vectors and Spheres", where I had to skip some of the calculations. The book could have used a little more explanation in this part, but I must admit, had I not been a little lazy, I could have looked up the necessary knowledge in a couple of days.

I am the kind of person who likes to ask a lot of "why?" questions in my head, and this book gave me answers to a number of them.

I imagine the book could be equally interesting for math students, as it gives meaning to the numbers - something I missed a lot in mathematics. While to me it was definitely the first half of the book that contained most of the new things, to them it might be the other way round.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but
the content was not quite what I expected it to be. Most of the content of this book is already common knowledge among professional pilots. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage of the subject
I used the first edition in some research and the university library years ago.The second edition is even more comprehensive.I'm glad to add this to my own library.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lacking detail
This book covers many important navigation systems including GPS.However, I felt like there were some details missing in the first few chapters.Simple things that I was not aware of prior to this book, such as heading 90 degrees due west, were not easy for me to understand.I had never been exposed to this type of lingo.Hence, I would not recommend this book for an undergraduate course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book with exhaustive detail
This book contians all the information that anyone could ever need.It also has the best index I have ever seen, making finding the smallest section easy. It does not really cover the basics of each system, but provided you have a basic knowledge then it will build on that.It is up to the reader to decide how much depth they want to go into, this book will take them as far as they could possibly need to go.

2-0 out of 5 stars A collection of disjoint writings
This book was obviously intended for the experienced navigator or system designer.It certainly reviews all of the traditional and modern navigation systems.However, in trying to explain every minute detail, the basic workings of the technology are never explained.

The average readerwill have a very difficult time in just trying to understand how a GPS orVOR or DME system works.A search on the web will present much betterexplanations.

This is, by far, not a quick read, it is burdened byvolumes of mathematics that are of little practical use, and the chapters,written by different authors, are often disjoint.

Simple, keyexplanations are mentioned (if at all) after pages of technical confusion. It is as if the author could spend several pages explaining to the averagedesert nomad how to build a snowman in every minute detail -- how to growthe carrot for the nose, how to pick out the best black rocks for the eyes,how to make the body round to "n" degrees of precision -- but heforgets to mention (until page 89) that, oh by the way, you need to havecold weather and snow to make one.

This well regarded series for students taking the commercial and airline transport pilot licences has been substantially revised to bring it into line with the new European Joint Aviation Requirements (JARs) for flight crew licensing. Each volume deals with the material required by one of the new JAR papers.

This volume covers the General Navigation paper with the exception of the principles, construction and errors of compasses which are dealt with in the new Instruments volume. Compared with the Navigation section of the old Volume 3 (Navigation General and Instruments) there is much new material, including navigation plotting procedures, the use of navigation computers and a very detailed survey of all charts encountered by modern professional and amateur pilots.

The opportunity has been taken to simplify the presentation of information so as to aid revision work. Many test questions and answers have been included, based on the JAR syllabus. ... Read more

Product Description
For anyone who enjoys walking, mountaineering, canoeing, skiing, sailing, or mountain biking, it is important to have a sound grasp of key techniques for planning and maintaining a route under any possible condition, day or night, rain or snow. This compact, easy-to-use handbook, developed out of six decades of experience by the British Army's Special Air Service Brigade, provides clear advice on navigation methods, both for a fully equipped journey and in emergency situations.Beginning with such navigation fundamentals as understanding map grid references and how to use a compass and GPS (global positioning system), this handbook goes on to provide detailed information on such subjects as finding your way without a map or compass, reading the sun and stars, navigating in extreme environments, marking trails, signaling for help, and tracking both animals and people as well as basic tips on how to elude being tracked yourself. Every procedure is demonstrated in step-by-step diagrams that clearly outline what to do and what not to do in order to bring you and your companions safely to your destination. (7 1/2 x 9 1/2, 192 pages, diagrams, charts)

5-0 out of 5 stars SAS Tracking & Navigation Handbook
Like ALL the SAS books,VERY GOOD--- extremely informative and easy-to-understand! I've owned a compass for years, but never really understood how to use it! Essential for survival-type situations--heck, just a plain old good book for hikers, camper, climbers, and any outdoorsmen! Mark Ritz (ritzaceking)

1-0 out of 5 stars rubbish
No relevance to 'SAS' anything and the very small 'tracking' section is worthless. The navigational info. might be of use to someone who knows nothing about it, but if I'd seen this in a bookshop, I'd never have bought it (it was on a reading list, God knows why)

2-0 out of 5 stars There's just not much here
In fact, there's only a single chapter on tracking, so let's just call this a navigation handbook. Okay, and the navigation info is very dryly presented and repeated. So I'm not saying this is a worthless book, but it's not all that great. (And for a final point, it's also bizarrely organized.)

4-0 out of 5 stars very nice for start or mid level.
It is a more then basic navigation & wilderness book, with some discussion on fielding, surviving, first aid, tracking & escape. Military background of writer does pop up here and there (if u knows where to look...), but mostly it is a starting + or mid level, though also experience users can get a new thing or two. It is a clear and easy book in most main subjects. Pictures r very good and help a lot. covers most needed materials: map, scale, topography - yet all those should be widen:compasses and the use of them, map- and- compass navigation techniques including the most useful stuff as back bearing, resection etc'- very nicely covered. There is also cover for wilderness and stars navigation, and some nice advices for rout planning & finding. The GPS chapter is nice, but need to be updated. The survival chapter is too short and need to be updated & wider. Search & rescue: nice, yet first aid should be wider with self-treatment for breaks, cuts & cut organs. Also no words on poisoning plants and animals. Tracking and trailing: nice, but not full. Same with escape methods.
All by all - it is very nice. Not a fully military book, but a very good aid for start + or mid level field navigators or soldiers: for the experienced persons, most material known but I believe u will find a new thing or two.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buy anything but this book
Neil Wilson's book is unbelievably boring, redundant, and lacking of useful information beyond a few paragraphs.I have read other books that condense the useful navigation information in this book into a single chapter.Just pick up any Hiking & Backpacking guide and you'll see what I mean.And with only one chapter in this book dedicated to tracking, I hardly see how this book got it's title.Please don't buy this book! ... Product Description
Cross-Border Provision of Air Navigation Services with Specific Reference to Europe Safeguarding Transparent Lines of Responsibility and Liability By Niels van Antwerpen The tremendous flow of air traffic traversing the airspace of the European Union demands extraordinary vigilance on the part of air navigation service providers. Although the first requirement of air navigation services is obviously the enhancement of safety, providers must also attend to the efficiency and optimisation of airspace capacity and the minimisation of air traffic delays. As technological and operational improvements proceed in these areas, jurisdictional issues of responsibility and liability particularly in cases of mid-air collisions become ever sharper and more in need of precise definition.This detailed and insightful exposition focuses on these issues from three overlapping perspectives: the international and European legal framework dealing with air navigation services, the question of state responsibility, and the question of liability for damage inflicted by air navigation service providers. The author s in-depth analysis includes examination of many elements, among them the following:
the interrelated roles of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC), the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation (EUROCONTROL), the European Community s European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), and other international bodies;
the Single European Sky initiative, its establishment of Functional Airspace Blocks (FUAs), and its ongoing research program (SESAR);
establishment of transparant lines of state responsibility in the context of cross-border provision of air navigation services;
and prospects for the imposition of a transparant liability regime on corporatised air navigation service providers.
In conclusion, the author enumerates the essential elements required for cross-border provision of air navigation services and offers well-thought-out final recommendations and conclusions on the most preferable way to pursue such cross-border provision within and outside the European Community. A model agreement for the delegation of air navigation service provision appears as an appendix. All professionals concerned with air navigation, in Europe and elsewhere, will appreciate the depth of knowledge and commitment apparent in this book. The deeply informed insights manifest in its pages will be of enormous value to aviation agency officials and air law practitioners everywhere. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
From the Preface: .... the purpose of examining and comparing the present long and medium-range navigation systems, applying uniform rules of evaluation. It was intended to analyse the extent to which the systems are suitable for common use by civil aviation and merchant marine.To complete this task, it became apparent that it was necessary to base such a comparative examination of the various radio navigation systems on a common basis, which, hence, forms an essential part of this paper. Based upon these descriptions, several tables were compiled presenting asurvey of the problems treated. In the first place, general data is given which indicates the characteristics of the navigation systems and which also roughly outlines their physical bases. Furthermore, special questions that may arise with regard to the practical application of the navigation systems are answered in a table for all systems examined. Information on theexpenditure, in the widest sense of the term as caused by the systems, are presented also in tables in order to facilitate comparison.... ... Read more
