But the latter question had not framed itself in her mind before it was answered. Without water they would not be able to exist at Steer Wells for twenty-four hours. A retreat would be equally impracticable. It was all horribly clear. The theft of the water was the first step in a deliberate plan to drive them out. The motive, too, was plain enough in the light of the overheard conversation at the National Hotel. The men who wanted Mr. Bell's mine had waited till he had located it before striking their first blow. What would their next be? Peggy's pulses throbbed and the grove seemed to blur for an instant. ... Read more

Product Description
By 1915, pioneer aviator Art Smith was as celebrated as any movie star might be today. He thrilled audiences with his barnstorming feats, doing"death spirals," sky writing, "loop-the-loops," and night flights using phosphorus fireworks. He was a consummate showman and had he not died in 1926, his name probably would be familiar to most Americans. He glamorized and popularized aviation while testingthe boundaries of aeronautical principles.

As a boy he longed to fly before he had ever seen an airplane. Hisparents believed in him, and he was fortunate to have a best friendnamed Al Wertman who helped him build an airplane. His fame spreadaround the globe and in 1916, the Japanese offered him $10,000 for aseries of exhibitions. His flying skills inspired a young Wiley Postto a life of aviation. After Smith’s death, when Lindbergh flew overFort Wayne and dipped his wings, he gave credit to the "BirdBoy" Art Smith.

The story of this rising star in American aviation is one of adventure, romance, scandal and history. Using Smith’s own autobiographical writings, the story is also a factual account of events in early aviation. The book includes photographs and postcards in Art Smith’s own handwriting mailed to Al Wertman. ... Read more

Product Description

On December 17, 1903, the World changed forever. The first powered flight by the Wright brothers at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, ushered in the era of powered flight which has transformed and shaped all aspects of modern life.

To mark the centenary of this momentous event, Aviators presents a photographic history of aviation, from the failed attempts of flying machines at the end of the 19th century, such as Lilienthal’s glider, through the Wright brothers and on to the pioneers who spread aviation throughout the world: Louis Blériot's first flight across the Channel in 1909, the first transatlantic crossing in 1919 by John Alcock and Whitten Brown and Amy Johnson's first flight to Australia in 1930. The book examines the rise of the first passenger airlines in the 1920s, too, and chronicles the beginnings of the jet era in the 1940s. The rise of great commercial airliners such as the Jumbo Jet, Concorde and the Airbus are also highlighted to give a comprehensive and absorbing account of the century of powered flight. ... Well, he might, if he was lucky. He said the cycle he was riding was faster than the other. But of course it would be very hard to tell just which to way to go. If Graves knew there was a chance that he might be followed he ought to be able to give anyone who was even a mile behind the slip. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Adventure, daring, action and good fun!
It is 1914, and the long anticipated Great War is beginning to engulf Europe. Over in England, the Boy Scouts are preparing to do whatever they can to help the United Kingdom in this time of need. Among them are Dick Mercer and Harry Fleming, an American Scout whose parents are temporarily living in England. And, when the commander at Ealing requests two Scouts for some unnamed service, Dick and Harry are quickly selected to be go. But, before they know it, Dick and Harry soon find themselves swept into adventure and intrigue. There's a German spy ring operating in the country, and only those two intrepid Boy Scouts can unravel their fiendish plot.

This book was first printed in 1921, and Colonel George Durston wrote many books for and about Boy Scouts. Though this book has a rather unlikely plot, it is a wonderful story of adventure, daring, action and good fun! Yes, I highly enjoyed this book and think that you will too. If you are a fan of early-twentieth century boys' fiction, then you really should read this book.

[If you want a great, old-fashioned Boy Scout book, then you must read "Tom Slade" by Percy K. Fitzhugh, which is definitely the crown of the genre!]

This is a memoir of the author's flying career, starting with his flight training at March Field, California, in the mid-1920s, his days flying PT-3s and DH-4s; and his training in attack aviation with the Army Air Corps at Kelly Field, Texas, through to his hours in a Curtiss Falcon A-3s and his second-place finish in the Patrick Trophy race in 1930. Written in witty, casual prose, this book is great fun for all military aviation enthusiasts. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars truth better than fiction
did richard pearse have beaten he wright brothers, into the air the question deserves a proper answer could the olds shed in hopkins st woolston Christchurch new zealand close to my first home have so predated the historic achivements in the USA. hear is the evidence, you can read and judge it for yourself when great ideas arise it usually transpires that they arise in more than one place. Ogilvie grants the wrights the clear lead in usutained and controllible flight, but the genius of a dedicated collonial eccentric is not therefore to be despised. A good read by a much respected historian.
