4-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Ayurveda
This is a great introduction to Ayurveda. Great information and very easy to understand... I enjoyed the book and my only two complaints were 1. As someone already mentioned there was not as much emphasis on constitutional types and the subject didn't get as in depth as I would have liked. 2. The style of writing was not as engaging as I would've liked.

5-0 out of 5 stars graditude.
Well, Ive been studying and practicing ayurveda for some time now and have found this book answering questions ive had. I really enjoy the straight forward simplicity of the books dialouge and set up . A very good book for those interested in ayurveda or just balancing their health! Also there are recipes in the back as well ! COOL!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ayurveda The Science of Self Healing
"Ayurveda: The Science of Self Healing," is a succinct, wonderfully illustraded practical opus-guide to parts of the body related to the "tridoshas," (the three doshas - body-types we all possess that must be in delicate balance for whole-health."Dr. Lad informs the reader-student of the connections of body-types with the elements of the zodiac, (fire, earth-water, air-ether), which are the ancient foundations of all spiritual tradtions. 4-0 out of 5 stars A little more advanced than I thought
The book starts off with a whole lot of information and not a whole lot of explanation. Not the best book to start with on your Ayurveda journey but definitely useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars a guide for awakened souls..
words fall short when it comes to write a review on Dr. David Frawley's work. simply the best. No one has better understanding on the subject than him. I have been following ayurveda and yoga in bits and pieces. this whole book consolidated my knowledge and taught me the right sequence of things. for example, doing pranayama when your ojas is low, is killing yourself..

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for "seekers". You will want to know more!
Bought this book for my yoga TT and found it very interesting, informative and deep. Definitely can recommend it. Sharka

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect for the intermediate-advanced practitioner
This book is perfect for those who already have some understanding of ayurveda/yoga/holistic health. It addresses the core principles and practices with a beautiful blend of spiritual lineage and academic rigor. This is definitely not an introductory-level book; it is a wonderful reference for those ready to move more deeply into these practices.

5-0 out of 5 stars yoga and Ayurveda

The kind of books I like are the ones that are tagged, underlined, and worn. That indicates that it is not just another book for another books sake. This is one of those books.Teaching or practicing yoga without knowledge of ayurveda is like teaching with some knowledge of life missing. It links us to the macrocosm aswell as understanding our constitution beyond the physical body and is a must buy and study. It helps us to understand what we have to re-wire on an individual level to make progress on the spiritual path. Camella Nair - Author of Aqua Kriya Yoga ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Ayurveda book on the market.
I am a TCM/Acupuncture student also studying Ayurveda. This is the text book you want if your going to seriously practice Ayurveda.Dr. Vasant Lad is the man to learn from here in the U.S.The teacher I am studying with was trained by Dr. Vasant Lad.We use both textbooks in our class. This book is not for the at home quick fix mommy doctor. This text is the real deal.Worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book on the Subject I've Found
This book is the most comprehensive book I have found on the the fundamentals of Ayurveda.I have read Prakrti by Dr. Robert Svoboda, and Ayurvedic Healing by Dr. David Frawley which were both quite good, but in terms of really getting into the heart of where Ayurveda comes from (history and its essence) and what it is, this book is superior. The other books try to be comprehensive without tons of detail. This book simply focuses on the foundations of Ayurveda, which if you don't have well understood will make it difficult to try to administer its practices.I have recommended this book now to everyone who as asked me where to start.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Ayurvveda information applied to matters of the mind
Anyone looking for practical psychological applications of Ayurveda and a better understanding of what we call "meditation," should read David Frawley's Ayurveda and the Mind. The book, which reads like a textbook, can by dry at times. But making sure you've digested parts one and two (like vegetables) will make the rest of the book come to life (like dessert).

I had an "aha" moment when reading Dr. Frawley's explanations of Pratyahara (withdrawal from the senses), Dharana (concentration), and Dhyana (meditation). It gives context and explanation to various mindfulness techniques which is helping me in my own practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just right introductory Ayurveda

5-0 out of 5 stars Ayurveda and Marma Therapy: Energy Points in Yogic Healing
An indepth book that I'm slowly learning from with all seriousness. Excellent content and up there with the best of them. Comparing some parts of this book with Chinese accupressure and acupuncture. This is a book that I would keep with all possessiveness for reading, learning and re-reading many times for many years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Reference Manual
I have been intrigued with acupressure points, acupuncture points, and as of late, Marma points, for use in my healing practice over the past few years.I use these points energetically, as opposed to manual stimulation. So, up to the release of this book I was always looking for better guides, maps, and general information for the Marmas. This book delivered exactly what I needed.

This book is a very complete and comprehensive guide to Marmas, their locations, what they govern, and how to interact with them based on Ayurvedic medicine. 1-0 out of 5 stars this book gets into a lot of far out stuff that are not commonly associatedwith ayurveda
this book gets into a lot of far out stuff that are not commonly associatedwith ayurveda.I am into the food and the Doschas but this book spends a lot of time on things like determining your condition by things such as....reading your face or your eyes. Reading your pulse.Mamry points (similar to acupuncture) and a lot more.Every subject that I tried to find in the index was not there. I could not find the simplest words in the index such as "constipation" or Triphala. And many others...the index is terrible. Some of it is written in Sanskrit so unless you are familiar with that it is really hard to navigate. It does not give details of how to assess, it just gives the facts and is not very usefulindetermining what the condition is.

5-0 out of 5 stars heavens banquet
Both my daughters had this cookbook and always made such wonderful recipes from it and I was always writing them out when I visited and then I found the book in softcover on amazon so now I have my own. I am not vegetarian but they have the most wonderful soups, vegetable recipes and also interesting breakfast foods...all simple ingredients and easy to make and delicious to eat!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect guide into ayurvedic eating and cooking
Miriam Hospodar'sHeaven's Banquet cookbook has been a staple in my cooking reference collection for a decade since it first came out in publication.
I love it for so many reasons! The overview and introduction to the Ayurvedicway of thinking , eating and cookingiswell written , encouraging , butnot overwhelming Personally, I dip a toe into ayurvediclifestyle and aspireto go furtherin this direction. Sometime soon!
Insightful, slyly humorous and engaging comments and quotes make me feeltrusting of Miriam's intentions andAyurvedic philosophy.
Itcontinues to be my guide into Indian spices, combinations and cooking methods.
Although it's been released in paperback, I personally recommend the hardcover . It will stay in my kitchen library for a long time, you know sometimes things happen to the paperback and they get mucked up. Also the hardcover has a nice feel to it.

3-0 out of 5 stars help! Am I missing something?
I bought this book because the jacket copy says "...teaches you how to match your diet to your mind body type for maximum health and well-being." But other than a short list of foods that are considered dosha pacifying and provoking, I see very little guidance on matching the recipes in the book to my body type. Very few of the recipes are marked in reference to any dosha. I am so frustrated and disappointed, but I'm wondering, am I just missing something? The recipes look wonderful, but I bought the book hoping for more, and I feel misled.

5-0 out of 5 stars easy to use and fun to read
I own several health cookbooks, but I use this one almost exclusively. The recipes are varied (so we're not eating "Indian" food all the time) and easy to follow. The authors writing style is humorous and clear. I enjoy perusing the book for new recipes to try. Everything I've made has been delicious.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!Best vegetarian cookbook ever.
At first perusal, I wasn't very impressed with this book.It seemed sort of lengthy and all the recipes seemed a little too simple, like why would you even need a recipe to make that?

However, after trying some of the recipes I have become a huge fan of this book.Whether I'm looking for something Ayurvedic or just something to make quickly for dinner, I can find the absolute perfect thing in this book.

The recipes may seem simple, but they are plentiful and amazing.I have tried many vegetarian cookbooks, but this one is way beyond what I could have hoped for in a singe resource. The author obviously did a huge amount of researching and testing to make the incredible variety that are available in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book has altered the way I view myself and everyday activities. If you have interest in holistic health, I would suggest beginning with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Beginner's Book
There are so many books about Ayurveda now and this is still my favorite to introduce the topic to new people. The illustrations are great, the explanations straightforward and yet there is still a nice depth to her knowledge.

Ayurveda offers a wholistic paradigm that addresses all parts of our selves, differing from the western approach that attempts to compartmentalize our bodies and lives. A book like this can lead us to know ourselves better and start us on the road to good health and inner peace.

3-0 out of 5 stars Stillhard to grasp
First let me say, I had 3 books on this topic and none ofthem were as good as this one.Of the ones I've seen this is the best at trying to understand the concepts here but I must admit I'm still a bit lost. There are great pictures throughout as well as some exercises to figure out what profile you are (I also found one on the web that was a bit better).I'm only giving it 3 stars because I think the information needs to be linked together better but like I said, its the best book I've found so far.So, for the beginner I'd look around but if you don't find another that appeals to you then come back and try out this one.I think its very complete, its just difficult information to convey.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great beginner's book
I love this book.I even lent it out and forgot who it got passed around to and re-bought it.The way this book is laid out makes it so easy to reference. It is not a book for the student who has lots of knowledge/experience.For the lay-person it is a must. Also it makes a great gift. This is the book which expanded my interest in Ayurveda (and yoga).I refer to it often when I fall off track. It provides a dosha assessment test and an extensive list of foods along with some important recipes. Also it is a great book to flip through when you need to be reminded of some important dos and don'ts of eating, exercise, sleeping habits, etc. This was the best [$$] I ever invested. Or...RE-invested, that is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent Introduction
This is often the first book I loan to friends who are interested inlearning about Ayurveda(I own two copies!). The photographs andillustraitons flesh out concepts that are hard to grasp with words alone. Holistic in its approach, this excelent introduction also contains a gooddeal of information that can be put into immediate use. More than worth theprice. ... Read more

On a trip to Paris, I picked up a magazine that contained an article by Dr. Joshi. It intriqued me.I followed the diet that he recommended for 21 days in the article and I felt amazingly better. So when I returned home from France, I decided to look up this Dr. Joshi and see what else he has written.Took the book to read on another trip and I was very impressed. His caring and non-critical nature comes through in his writing. He explains the Ayurvedic medical concepts thoroughly. He explains what doshas are and how to begin to accept yourself as the type of person that you are...all with distinct kindness and gentleness reflective of himself and his culture. He doesn't push or sell an agenda. He states facts. This would be a good book to read after something like Perfect Health by Chopra, because it reinforces and further explains principles in a slightly more clinical form.I liked the book very much and would not hesitate to recommend to the curious health addict.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ayurveda and Panchakarma
I love this book! It clearly explains aspects of Ayurveda that I never could understand before. For example the difference between Agni & Pitta, is usually explained in a confusing way in other books, but here it totally makes sense. Dr. Joshi explains concepts using real-life examples drawn from his years of clinical experience, with real people/clients. Itget the feel that he knows what he is talking about, which is something I don't find with many of the other books. Most of the other books on Ayurveda that I have read seem to be written by folks that are more students of Ayurveda, rather than practioners with years of clinical experience. For me I want to know that suggestions work in the Real World, with real people.
If you want want a great intro to Ayurveda you can't go wrong with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand and to the point....
Dr. Joshi has done a great job with this book. The principles of Ayurveda are clearly presented in a way you can identify with. Many other books are over cumbersome and difficult to comprehend or apply to your life.Joshishares home remedies as well as a succinct description fo Pancha Karma.Ifwe all did this deep cleansing/nourishing rejuvenation program on a regularbasis we would not only improve our quality of life but our cash flow aswell, without the abundance of prescriptions masking the real source ofdis---ease.Thanks Dr. Joshi for sharing the ancient knowledge ofAyurveda. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Too Hindu
Elegant book on subject but deduct 2 stars for no animal product fooditems listed and too hindu-centric (not universal enuf) approach to subject

4-0 out of 5 stars Passionate approach to ayurvedic nutrition
A comprehensive guide to ayurvedic nutrition and cooking by a pre-eminent female authority on Ayurveda. This book gives a clear introduction to the principles of Ayurveda, including the body types (doshas); and how to apply them in a way that promotes not only health but also spiritual wellbeing.

Maya Tiwari (now Swamini Mayatitananda) emphasises the practice of ritual (sadhana) as a path to holistic wellness; especially the rituals of preparing and eating food. Ritual is nothing more than action with awareness - the rhythmic hand-pounding of spices; the sensuous kneading of dough; the langourous stirring of ghee as it bubbles on a fire. This practice brings back meaning to these essential activities, in an age of "convenience" instant foods that are eaten on the run, or in front of the television.

Tiwari asserts that it is precisely this loss of meaning, this disconnection with the vital processes of nutrition, that have led to poor digestion, inappropriate eating and cravings, and emotional emptiness that eventually lead to serious disease. Awareness and meaning in daily activities, on the other hand, lead to greater satisfaction in life, and a growing sense of love for oneself and all beings.

Full lists of foods for each dosha are given, along with tasty and wholesome recipes.

Ayurveda: A Life of Balance is a passionate, humane and compelling approach to Ayurveda and ayurvedic cooking - a book to be reread and treasured for a long time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Ayurvedic treatise
I especially like the details, especially regarding dual dosha (for insance, Pitta/Vata) dietary guidelines. She includes many foods that aren't often in other Ayurvedic books.A good book to add to one's library.

4-0 out of 5 stars A little overwhelming but valuable resource
Because this book contains such a wealth of knowledge, it may take a while to really get into it. However, it is highly informative and certainly a good addition to any library, especially for those interested in holistic health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Your Life In Balance
I disagree with a previous reviewer that this book is mainly a cookbook.I find that it has MUCH more to offer than that.

I am currently in a 200 hour yoga teacher training course, and this book is required reading for me.

Tiwari goes very much into the philosophy behind Ayurveda and the doshas, yet explains it in a way that the average reader can understand. She gives the best explanations of each dosha that I've ever read, going into aspects such as career and sexuality, diet, exercise, physical and emotional traits.

She then gives food charts for the 10 doshas, instead of the usual three doshas that most do.She lists foods that are beneficial, and those that are not.

I find this book to be wonderful, and very accessible to the casual reader as well as the experienced person very into Ayurveda. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beauty is more than skin deep
This book provides great information, not only for improving one's skin but for improving health in general.Very readable, with "quizzes" to help you determine your skin and body type and recipes for making your own skin care products.Easy to do but you'll need to go shopping for ingredients. And they work!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful tool and giude
I have had this book since 1998, bought at BookPeople in Austin(great bookstore). I still use much of the recipes today, and do as she suggests and "feed my skin." I did not do every step and recipe in the book, but found so many tools all over the book that I decided to try and ended up incorporating. This book has nothing to do with religion, but is a science book based on centuries of skin, hair, and body care. One of the best tools I learned is finding out which personality trait I am most prevalent, and trying to balance it. Then at the very end the best part is to seek absolute beauty within yourself and spend time on spirituality, of whichever you choose, to give you that shine from within. Really good book that explains things so well, and is so different from Deepak Chopra, which I am emmensely grateful for, as his books do not suit me. Pratima knows her work, and I am in so much gratitude to her for writing this book, so others can gain help and knowlegde.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information
I am currently re-reading this book as it has quite a bit of information in it. Since I have oily skin, I can't use all of the oils on my face that they suggest. It's nice reading about Ayurveda.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Beautiful
I've only ever written one review before, but felt compelled to do so after reading this book.I'm not kidding when I say it's transformed my skin.I've struggled with adult acne for years, and my skin is the clearest ever - and best of all, I'm not spending $$$ on skin care.I love the fact that everything I'm using on my face I could eat!I'll be honest too, I'm not following everything recommended to the T.I've already bought this book for a couple of friends, and I've got to say, whether you have problem skin or just want a more natural approach, this book is definitely worth checking out. It's truly beautiful and inspiring, and I know I'll keep going back to it.PS there is one review by someone saying she has sensitive skin, she already knew that and so immediately started the program.I would urge her, and anyone planning to try the advice in this book, to actually read the book and go through the diagnosis process, rather than skipping to the suggested programs.I discovered my skin type is pita dominant, and was surprised as normally my body type is considered vattic.Take your time with the book, don't expect quick fixes, but read it and enjoy the journey it can take you on!It's not presciptive (ie, you have oily skin, do this... and if you read it that way, you are missing the point), it's an opportunity to tune into yourself in a far deeper way, and access the wisdom that is in your skin and in your body.I thank the author for sharing the wisdom she has gained.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Answers!
Absolutely LOVE this book! (& actually I haven't yet finished reading it!) haha... I'm already experimenting with coconut oil on my face, tho, and FEELING the supple difference!

It's a very thorough read for anyone sincerely searching for a natural solution to their skin problems. There's no way that it could be harmful, only helpful.

Love the theory that everything you put on your skin is 'food for your skin'! So if you can't imagine eating it, you shouldn't be putting it on your skin! :-O ^_^

I really like the profiles of the different doshas and I love that it explains the common temperaments, etc. It really is about learning to de-stress in order to de-wrinkle! I really really could go on forever about how much I love this book :)

It's just been the answers to so many questions I had been searching for in terms of clearing my face and also gives me such great incentive to work towards clearing my worrying thoughts whenever they do creep up ^_^

Not only for the sake of facial beauty but for entire body and mind health!

Oh, I would love to be this woman's apprentice. She has obviously really done her research and there is a LOT of amazing facts from modern studies there to back up all the ancient wisdoms. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
It was in great condition and the book is worth every penny that I spent on it.Thank you.....

5-0 out of 5 stars An eminently worthwhile investment
This is a 670 page, giant of a book. It sat on my bookshelf, un-perused, for several years before I discovered the treasures that are in it. Of course it has a substantial section on about 85 popular herbs and their uses. Also, the Sanskrit name, the Hindi name, the Latin name and (when available) the English name of each herb is given, as well as its functions, its counter-indications, and its preferred method of preparation.

Then, there is a hefty section on Pancha Karma - although I do not recommend that you try these methods at home, other than a simple oil massage.

The largest part of the book is devoted to various diseases, arranged by body systems - circulatory system, nervous system, immune system, etc. This is wonderfully comprehensive and thorough and gives many uses of herbology and other natural methods to regain health.

However, my favorite areas of the volume are the small areas: mantras, essential oils (there are many useful ideas here--the combination of peppermint oil and lavender oil works wonderfully well for sunburn), music, philosophy and Sanskrit.

At first glance, one may be overwhelmed by the size and cost ($32) of the book. Have faith! It is eminently worth it. I strongly recommend this tome for your home library if you are seriously interested in natural medicine AND if you already have a basic understanding of what Ayurveda is and how it works: you should know Vata, Pitta, and Kapha quite thoroughly and know, in a rough way, which mental and physical conditions relate to which dosha(s). If you meet these general "prerequisites," then go ahead and buy this book, knowing that you will have made an excellent investment.

Note: This book should not be considered a substitute for consulting a trained ayurvedic physician.

4-0 out of 5 stars ayurveda encyclopedia
this book is very comprehensive. as an encyclopedia it does address the large science of ayurveda. it also addresses modern "diseases" that were not named years ago. very helpful book to have in your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for Ayurvedic

5-0 out of 5 stars best book on Ayurveda I have found so far
I bought this book about 2 years ago on a whim, but it has proved to be the most thorough book I have found on Ayurveda to date.Several other books I found on Ayurveda were not only smaller than this one, but very vague in what they were talking about.Ayurveda is not cut and dried, so you will find different beliefs in Ayurveda depending on the source, but if you study it enough you will find some things are constant. It's helpful also to cultivate an awareness of your body and lifestyle to better know what suits you.... anyways,

This book has something for everyone: herbalism, diet, yoga stretches, gem, color and music therapy, mantras, and meditation, body cleansing and massage, etc. etc.
I like that even though this book was recorded by a Westerner (but dictated by an Indian) it' hasn't been watered down with your standard New Agey vague "spiritual" crap. Many of the traditional Indian practices are mentioned, even though they are not all considered to be healthy in the Western world (i.e., mineral bhasmas, or burning certain minerals and using them as medicine; where in the US some are illegal because they contain lead or mercury, in India their medicinal properties are recognized, similar to the use of some poisons in Homeopathy)If there is anything I can't stand, it is sugar-coated, vague, generalized references that have been dumb-downed for us Westerners!I prefer ethnographies or at least books that are as close to the real thing as can get.
This book is at times general, but for the things that really count (the things you can put down the book and go and actually do yourself)this book does not skimp on the details.
There are a lot of spelling errors in this book, so sometimes you have to guess at what some words are, but the information is still valid.
I have found this book to be very helpful and enlightening. When reading this book I recognized things that I already knew to be true subconsciously, but did not realize other people knew about as well. For example: when reading about nutrition and the effects different kinds of food have on the body. I have heard it said that the best books are the ones which remind you of what you already know, because they point to universal truths.I would say 5000 years is a good amount of time to distill the truth about a thing! This book definitely changed my life for the better ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Human Design
I love this book, have already spent many happy hours with it and will spend many more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening
I found the subject matter very enlightening and fascinating. So did a friend that I shared thebook with.I found the type of depression that I had in the book.It was very helpful in my recovery from mental illness.

2-0 out of 5 stars You Can Do Better
If, like me, you struggle with depression, you can do much better than this book.

First and foremost, I must say that I find the authors' endorsement of the Transcendental Meditation religious-organization/movement/cult to be most disappointing.

Transcendental is merely one of many forms of mantra meditation. Most can be learned for free via the local library and the internet, but, if you want to learn the "TM technique," your experience will essentially amount to paying a ridiculous amount of money for a "special" mantra. There are many "free" forms of mantra meditation out there, and the claim that mantra meditation is the best sort of meditation is certainly debatable. The authors of this book, instead of teaching you anything about meditation themselves, basically tell you to "go learn Transcendental Meditation." The authors tell you that Transcendental Meditation is the only type of meditation that has been extensively scientifically evaluated for efficacy...but this is simply not true. Given the authors' bias towards this religious movement...I cannot help but distrust everything else that they say for fear of some ulterior motive or agenda.

Next we have the Yoga portion of this book. I expected the authors to explain many more yoga postures, but they didn't. They explain (w/ nifty diagrams, i must say) two cycles of yoga postures: sun salutation and moon salutation. Cool. I'm no expert on yoga, but...since "yoga" is supposed to be one third of this book's method for creating happiness, I expected a bit more. Actually, a lot more.

With meditation and yoga down, we have one more to go: Ayurveda. Ayurveda is...a "traditional" (alternative) medicine native to India. Now, I'm definitely no champion for the western pharmaceutical sort of health care...but I'm definitely no champion for superstition either. A bit of googling shows that there have been issues with toxic chemicals being found in traditional herbs used in Ayurveda. Advice pertaining to breathing and diet is really just common sense...and is nothing unique to the Ayurveda tradition.

Much of this book consisted of the authors trying to apply bits and pieces of modern scientific knowledge to the ancient belief system of Ayurveda, and then claiming, "Look! Members of this superstitious tradition already knew this stuff thousands of years ago." Fundamentalist groups inside Christianity, Islam, and other Eastern traditions are all guilty of using this tactic. Especially since much of the science that they talk about pertains to the highly complex field of quantum physics, I cannot help but suspect that much of what they say is pseudoscience.

In the end, what do we have? A book that claims to resolve depression and create happiness in three ways: meditation, yoga, and Ayurveda. They don't teach you a thing about meditation, but instead refer you to a ridiculous religious organization. The amount of actual yoga that they teach you is quite small. And, finally, Ayurveda is a superstitious system comprised of mostly common sense techniques that can be found elsewhere (especially in the age of the Internet) for free. Quite frankly, this book is ridiculous. I fear you would have better luck curing your depression by reading the copious amounts of absurd occult material on Amazon and the Internet: the occultists, at least, never run short of rituals to recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ayurveda for Women:A Guide to Vitality and Health
Ayurveda is one of the oldest known systems of healing. It emphasizes the quality of life and all that can affect it.Dr. Robert Svoboda focuses on the health and happiness of women in Ayurveda for Women: A Guide to Vitality and Health, his latest book.

Dr. Svoboda is the first Westerner to graduate from a college of Ayurveda and be licensed to practice in India. He currently writes, teaches, and lectures internationally.

According to Ayurvedic principles, "every substance that we encounter and every action that we perform or that is performed on us influences our inner balance for good or ill."Dr. Svoboda adds that "Ayurveda aims to train individuals to evade disease, rather than insisting that they wait for illnesses to develop before they can be treated."

He describes three stages in women's lives-youth, adulthood, and old age-and provides complete information on the role of Ayurvedic practices in each stage.Essential to good health at any stage of life is "flow," that is, the ability of "substances and energies [to] continually and adroitly find their ways into and out of living organisms."In humans, this includes processes like digestion and menstruation.Blockages in any of the fourteen primary flows lead to problems.

Ayurveda is based on three "forces" which are called doshas. Dr. Svoboda describes the characteristics of each dosha, and provides a simple quiz that allows women to determine which dosha predominates in their life.He explains the strengths and weaknesses of each dosha, and how to incorporate those into daily life.

A balanced life includes exercise, sleep, diet, meditation, and good relationships.Ayurveda principles include becoming aware of the role of each of these, and practicing body-mind-spirit healing.Dr. Svoboda says that "the better you can awaken your awareness, the better you will flow through life, and the more health will accrue to you."Ayurveda for Woman provides all the information contemporary women need to achieve awareness, and does so in an easy to understand manner. It's essential reading for any woman interested in keeping herself and her family healthy and happy.

2-0 out of 5 stars informative yet condescending
As a woman interested in the art and science of Ayurveda I was of course drawn to this book.It is a very informative and helpful book but the tone of Svoboda's writing is very condescending. In the beginning the author appears to have great respect for women and the fact that they are the givers of life. But in every other paragraph to follow the doctor seems to make a point to talk down to the reader. It's hilarious actually.I wish I had the book in front of me to quote from.He even goes so far as to instruct mothers in how to raise their children.I don't know if this doctor is even a parent. He makes no mention of his own experience in this area. The amount of effort and energy that goes into creating and then raising up human beings is enormous and deserves respect and appreciation, which Svoboda for some reason is unable to offer to his readers. This book does little to truly support women of any age group now that I really think about it.Women need compassion, not simply facts and a "talking to" about how they should be doing better. So for all those who wish to read this book, you will find clearly presented valuable information about how Ayurveda relates to womenkind. But getting past Dr. Svoboda's holier-than-though tone is like scraping a heavy layer of ama off the tongue. ... Product Description
Marma Points The Mystical Doors of Perception

In ancient Vedic times, marma points were called bindu-a dot, secret dot or mystic point. Like a door or pathway, activating a marma point opens into the inner pharmacy of the body. The body is a silent, universal, biochemical laboratory operating every moment to interpret and transform arising events. Touching a marma point changes the body's biochemistry and can unfold radical, alchemical change in one s makeup. Stimulation of these inner pharmacy pathways signals the body to produce exactly what it needs, including hormones and neurochemicals that heal the body, mind and consciousness. This deep dimension of marma therapy has the potential to unfold spiritual healing.

Marma points are an important element of Ayurveda's healing power. Developed in India centuries ago, these energy points profoundly affect the body, mind and spirit and facilitate the deepest levels of healing. Prana is the current of energy that infuses every cell within the body. Stimulating marmani (energy points) directly taps into this reservoir of energy and promotes health.

This work is the first of its kind to systematically present all 117 marmani according to their individual energetics and to compare them with the Chinese system of acupuncture points. Detailed commentaries for each marma shed light on their diagnostic and therapeutic scope. Marma therapy integrates vital knowledge of the energy points with specific techniques of Ayurvedic massage, detoxification, acupressure, aromatherapy, yoga practices, meditation and more.

This book is a valuable resource for Ayurvedic practitioners and acupuncturists as well as medical doctors, massage therapists and yoga therapists. It also serves as a foundation to develop tools for one's own self-healing and for students of various medical systems who are motivated to pursue a holistic approach to health. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
The book that arrived was true to its description. It was in perfect condition and had no creases or smudges. The book was fascinating and an easy, but very informative read. Great quality!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ayurveda: Life, Health and Longevity
I am familiar with other books on Ayurveda such a YOGA AND AYURVEDA by Frawley and THE YOGA OF HERBS by Frawley and Lad. I have also read other books written by Svoboda on the subject of Jyotish. This book delivers the contents of Ayurveda thoroughly with a flavor of academia. Svoboda's style seems more analytical and scientific and has a knack for summarizing theory, philosophy, and the wisdom of a concept in a sentence. His expertise on Ayurveda is evident and I will keep this book as a reference. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Introduction to Ayurveda Out There
Excellent introduction to the subject by one of the foremost practitioners and teachers of Ayurveda in the western world. highly recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars In-depth presentation of the theory of Ayurveda
This is an excellent book to understand the theoretical basis of Ayurvedic medicine. The complexity of Ayurveda's theory is often overlooked for its knowledge of herbs and diet. Vasant Lad's "The Science of Self-Healing: A Practical Guide..." is very useful for such practical information; anyone wanting a quick perusal of what Ayurveda can offer should consult his book.
For those already familiar with Ayurveda or medicine, however, this book opens your mind. His writing style is excellent (certainly a higher level than Vasant Lad's books), but very engaging and easy to read. I do not know how to describe his style (you should look at excepts), but he takes you through every aspect of Ayurvedic medicine, starting with the fundamentals. Almost like a narrative, he tells the story of the Ayurvedic view of the human being and the universe, thus illustrating what the Ayurvedic philosophy means.
One criticism I have is that he does not cite his references. This is particularly problematic when he refers to "recent discoveries" or what "modern science" says; he has a bibliography, but that mostly contains books pertinent to Ayurveda. Also, some of the comparisons he makes to allopathic medicine and anatomy are questionable, such as the existence of a deposit of magnetic metal in the frontal bone of the skull. As a student at a US medical school, I would advise to take some of these comparisons with a grain of salt. Nonetheless, he is familiar with the ideas and theory behind allopathic medicine, and he makes thought-provoking comparisons to the Ayurvedic system.

I highly recommend this book to those who want a further understanding of the philosophy that is Ayurveda.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Ayurveda.
If you want to understand the history of Ayurveda and the basic concepts of this science of life, read this book. I'm presently reading several ayurveda books and this one has impress me very much with its clarity and Dr. Svoboda way of writing. There are other great books on this subject by Dr. Vasant Lad. ... Seriously, It is better to go for a more comprehensive book. This book is very very basic. It can still help those who have never been exposed to ayurveda. I suggest to buy a better book. May be other book by the same author titled 'Prakriti'.

5-0 out of 5 stars very educational
I am a yoga teacher and veterinarian. This book had a great descriptions of both ayurveda and TCM.I thought it had great depth, it looked at TCM in a number of cultures, almost like a medical cultural anthropology of TCM.The book a lso has a comprehensive comparison of the two systems of ancient medicine.I found this book to be useful for me as I begin my study of TCVM and continue my study of ayurveda.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good overview
As far as I am aware, this is the only book out there in English to look at the connections and divergences in philosophy and praxis of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayuveda, the traditional healing techniques andsystems of China and India respectively. As such, it provides an importantservice. It is written for the general public, and so, students of eitheror both of the healing systems won't find much new in the respectivesections on them. However, it is an excellent introductory overview to bothsystems. In addition, serious students and practitioners will benefit fromthe attempt to look at the differences and similarities in the two ancientsystems. While a much more in-depth account is certainly needed, I hopeSvoboda, an excellent and exteremely important writer, teacher, andpractitioner of Ayurveda and Tantra, doesn't get around to it anytime soon, because I hope to eventually write it myself! ...
