Occasional typo's most of which are fairly obvious, the most significant being the deletion of limb 5 from the table spanning pg 265-266 summarizing Patanjali's Classical eightfold system of yoga.

Product Description
Most people think of yoga as a solitary activity that is inherently therapeutic. While that is generally true, yoga poses and breathing practices can also be prescribed for specific health problems—often in combination with dietary advice taken from Ayurveda, traditional Indian medicine.Yoga Therapy is an essential guide for yoga teachers, advanced practitioners, and anyone who wants to make therapeutic use of yoga. A. G. and Indra Mohan prescribe postures, breathing techniques, and basic Ayurvedic principles for a variety of common health problems, including asthma, back pain, constipation, hip pain, knee pain, menstrual problems, and scoliosis.

Yoga Therapy is one of the few books that shows yoga teachers how to put together appropriate yoga sequences and breathing techniques for their students. Mohan details how to correctly move into, hold, and move out of poses, how to breathe during practice to achieve specific results, and how to customize a yoga practice by creating sequences of yoga poses for a particular person. ... I found the Yoga Therapy book to be a great reference tool to building specific sequences tailored to an individuals needs. For the person who needs to concentrate more on low back strength, for example, it is well written and illustrated. I'm glad I purchased it!

2-0 out of 5 stars It appears everyone wants to be a yoga therapist
Anyone can practice a bit of yoga, read a few books and then call themself a yoga therapist.

While the term sounds appealing, caution is advised when using the term "therapy".

The word "therapy" comes from the Greek "therapeia" meaning "a service, an attendance" which, in turn, is related to the Greek verb "therapeuo" meaning "I wait upon." Therapy was (and is) a service done to the sick (from www.medterms.com). Therapy is therefore usually associated with the medical profession rather that yoga teachers.

If you are a professional therapist and are also trained in yoga, this book might help you understand more about the physiological implications of certain yogic practices with some Ayurveda thrown in as well, however if you practice and/or teach yoga and want to become a therapist, this book may lead some to believe in the fantastic curative powers of a bit of bending and twisting with a few breathing exercises thrown in, when there could easily be more to the medical problem than the yoga teacher is trained to deal with.

If you are a patient of someone who bases their qualifications on this book, I would advise you to seek another professional opinion, at least from a qualified therapist in your area of need who is also suitably trained in yoga as well.

As far as therapeutic interventions or medical practice goes, the book is seriously lacking. Remember that the word "yoga" means "to join" or "to bring together" which is designed for the practitioner themselves to do the work, any inner healing and balancing should be done themselves, it is not for someone else to "treat" them using yoga.

This book should certainly be used with caution, especially considering that the author in previous books has unfortunately mistranslated important Sanskrit words into English perhaps with a lack of understanding or awareness as to their physiological and medical implications, e.g. a Sanskrit word for "abdomen" has been mistranslated into "chest". Medically this is entirely insufficient especially when presenting one' self as a "therapist" and could lead to all sorts of unforseen repercussions and medical problems for the uninformed reader.

I would certainly advise caution, tho am well aware that many will ignore this advice and buy the book anyway hoping to become a yoga therapist.

5-0 out of 5 stars yoga therapy
The more I teach, the more I am interested in the therapeutic aspects of asana and how it links to our lifestyle that can be understood through the knowledge of Ayurveda. Nice explaination in the principles of movement and breathing section on gravity and strength. The section on observation and assessment is useful because it can help the teacher empower the student with greater self-awareness. The asanas illustrated from a chair aswell as from the floor makes the pranayama section meaningful for the student who may well have a bias in the body or be confined to a wheelchair. If you already have a basic understanding of prakruti and vikruti, the ayurvedic/yoga therapy section can be useful. The favorable vs unfavorable choice of asanas can help one understand the groups of asanas that may prove effective in a therapeutic scenario. Whilst I have yet to find a completely effective way to erradicate painful menses periodically, at least I feel more inspiration to continue
trying to find the route cause of the imbalance within me. Camella Nair - author of "Aqua Kriya Yoga"

5-0 out of 5 stars Great and Deep Knowlegde
This is one of the best book on Ayurveda or, better said, its purest form: Maharishi Ayurveda.
The book is very simple to read for anyone and its simplicity is its power as there is only one thing that is of uttermost importance for Health, understanding that we are basically Pure Consciousness.
This book therefore doesn't focus on disease but on how to increase Health, using all the different disciplines of Vedic Science.
Our modern medicine has forgotten what is real health and it has been too much focused in fighting disease, becoming therefore a science of suffering.
In sanscrit the word for Health is Svastha which translated means "to stand in the Self".
It is not just an absence of disease. It means to be in complete harmony with your own Self which is ultimately Pure Consciousness.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a useful text
This book is essentially a 163 page advertisement for the products and services marketed by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (founder of Transcendental Meditation) and his organization.Though it provides a good introduction to the foundations of ayurveda (which can be found in scores of other books), this book provides almost no information for health professionals who wish to adopt ayurvedic methods into their practice, nor to laypersons who wish to use ayurvedic principles for better self care.

Although written by two MDs, Contemporary Ayurveda only serves to reinforce the notion that complementary and alternative approaches to medicine are the domain of hucksters and charlatans. Those with a sincere interest in ayurveda would do better with the books of Vasant Lad or Scott Gerson.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book, simple but very deep
This is one of the books that I used in the Diploma of Maharishi Vedic Approach to Heath that I did in Australia in 1998.
Amongs all the book that I read this is one of the best.
It is well written, simple (if you donno anything about ayurveda) but goes quiet in to dept.
Very very good book.
I suggest it to everyone, from the person that never read anything about ayurveda to the person who already have some knowledge and whish to explore the purity and simplicity of Maharishi Ayurveda.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very goodcombination of practical & scientific
I bought this book on Amazon after it was recommended to me by a local medical doctor who is also trained in Ayurveda and incorporates Maharishi Ayuvedic practices in his clinic. I have been frustrated with the bulk of Aurvedic texts available on-line and in my city, which barely skim the surface of Ayurveda and certainly don't attempt to review the scientific literature on Ayurveda. I found this book to have a reasonably good coverage of the history of Ayurveda, a quite good presentation of the theoretical base of Ayurveda (though they perhaps go a bit over the top trying to link quantum physics to Ayurveda-- I myself am not trained in quantum physics, and I respectfully doubt the authors are...), and a good coverage of practical Ayurveda, with a liberal and much-appreciated sprinkling of well-documented references to the scentific literature on Ayurveda. Recommended for those who'd like to have a solid base on which to build their study of Ayurveda.

3-0 out of 5 stars good effort for Ayurveda

5-0 out of 5 stars Aryuveda Intro
This is a fine intro tothe Aryuveda view of health and wellness. The visual material (photos, drawings, etc) gives an excellent overview of Aryuveda philosophy.

Attractive and concise, the booksupplies the reader with profiles of of subjects to enhance the understanding of how Aryuveda can be utilized in understanding personality and behavior.I also appreciate the cautions noted, i.e., consulting a trained Aryuveda physician for correct evalution and treatment.Hopefully, the book will encourage safe exploration of alternative health options.

4-0 out of 5 stars not the best, but still good
This book was interesting in that it explored regions of Ayurveda I had not encountered before. What I didn't care for was its lack of a doshic assessment test, lists of yes and no foods, and some common recipes. In that respect it was not specific enough to be used as a resource book. Then it was terribly specific in its case studies. At least in terms of herbs. It might use half a page to list ingredients in an herbal medicine then say nothing about dietary changes. I probably will not use this as a sourcebook. If you are looking for that(especially as a beginner) get Judith Morrisons THE BOOK OF AYURVEDA.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to Ayurvedic principles.
If you know nothing about Ayurveda but are curious and want to know more, this is the place to start.Beautiful layout, art work and easy to read text, charts and photographs. This is not a how to manual but a layman'smanual of concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book makes the study of Ayurveda an enjoyable adventure
At last what many people have been looking for: a well produced , highly artistic illustrated guide to the often difficult and arcane world of Ayurveda! While there are a number of excellent introductory books on this subject, until this one none have been presented in such an accessible visual format. If you have trouble getting into Ayurveda or introducing Ayurveda to your friends, family, students, or clients, this book may be exactly what you need. The Complete Illustrated Guide to Ayurveda makes the study of Ayurveda not so much an intellectual excercise as an enjoyable adventure. It uses traditional Indian art as well as contemporary illustrations and examples, to make the subject relevant to people today.Yet the book does not sacrifice anything by way of content. Anyone interested in Ayurvedic medicine or natural healing will want to have this book, not merely on the shelf, but out in the open for everyone to look at and benefit from. The END ... Read more

Product Description
Ayurveda, the ancient art of healing, has been practiced in India for more than two thousand years and survives today as a living medical tradition whose principles are at the heart of many "alternative" therapies now used in the West. This "science of longevity" has parallels with Buddhist thought, and advocates a life of moderation through which the three humors of the body will be brought into balance. The writings selected for this volume are taken from Sanskrit medical texts written by the first Ayurvedic physicians, who lived between the fifth century b.c. and the fourteenth century a.d. Here readers will find wide-ranging and fascinating advice on the benefits of garlic therapy, prayers for protection against malevolent disease deities, surgical techniques, exercise regimens, the treatment of poisons, the interpretation of dreams, and more. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This is one of my most used cookbooks.I like the simplicity and ease of variability of these recipies.I also like that most recipies are sized for one or two people, making it perfect for single cooks.I have tried other Indian cookbooks before and found most often that for daily meals, there was too much time involved in the preparation. Not so here.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in altering their eating habits and relationship to food. The meals are filling, but not overfilling, and seem quite healthy on average. Of the recipies I have tried only one was too bitter to my taste.
The best are now standard in my weekly menu: beets with yogurt, sweet potatoes with basil, pumkin soup, red lentils with ginger, braised peppers, curried rice, various dal recipies, lassi and others.

This is not a great book with which to learn ayurvedic technique, however. There is some information at the start of the book but it was not particularly useful and I frequently ignore the variations the authors recommend for my type.

3-0 out of 5 stars Author should try some of her recipes.
I gave this book three stars because I enjoyed only 3 of the 55 recipes. Perhaps my Western palate is unused to Indian food.

3-0 out of 5 stars Author should try her recipes before publishing them.
I gave this book 3 stars because there were 3 recipes in the book I thought tasted good. Some of the recipes were so bad that I threw the food away from me in disgust (and dismay because I did not have anything toeat). The author puts ghee in nearly all her recipes and it was onlyafterwards that I figured out that I could substitute oil for the clarifiedbutter. What I learned is that I strongly dislike the taste of butter inmy food. But the recipes that I liked I enjoyed very much, and I thankthe author for giving me some new ideas on how to cook with Indian spices. Maybe the problem is that I am an American with Western tastes. If I hadgrown up with these dishes, would these recipes have tasted delicious? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing resource for the seriously interested
This book covers a great many aspects of Ayurveda in quite a lot of depth, including relatively advanced topics such as Pancha Karma and one of my personal favorite therapies, sweating. I really love the book for this reason, and also for the very wise, loving, earth-based and non-dogmatic tone of the author.

I do agree with the comment that the content could be more organized, but the book is so excellent that I'm happy to overlook that point. However, I would not recommend this book as an introduction to Ayurveda to anyone who doesn't have a serious background in alternative health, especially if they're just looking for a few simple techniques to practice at home.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disorganized
On one level, this book gives a wealth of detail on how to perform panchakarma, perhaps enough to do it on your own.But it's far too scattered.Using the knowledge in this bookwill require reading it a dozen times to dissect it and then rewrite it so you can do everything in the proper order. She needs to create an updated edition. But if you don't mind extended research and reorganizing it, you'll love it.It's still the most thorough book I have found so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maya Tiwari writes like Hindu Godess of Wisdom.
I started reading this book along with the original scripture on Ayurveda.I stopped reading the scripture when I realised that this book is authentic repoduction of sashtra (scripture).Maya Tiwari is highlymeticulous and writes in lucid langauge. She writes like Hindu GodessSaraswati (Godess of Wisdom). This book is a must for all those who thinkAllopathy is a joke.

1-0 out of 5 stars The healing techniques were much too complicated.
Other than the words to live by, the book was too complicated to either understand or put into action.Unless I totally misinterpreted the text, the proceedures had to be done by at least one other person to help.Myspiritual journey is personal, I don't expect others to understand, howwould you find other people to help out if they don't get it? ... Product Description
Deep Yoga, Ancient Wisdom for Modern Times, is a collection of essays on the healing and spiritual powers of Yoga and Ayurveda and their relevance for our modern times. Each chapter contains wisdom from these sacred science and practical tips and tools for applying this wisdom to your daily life. In our modern, fast-paced culture, dominated by mass-media, distraction and superficiality, stress has become epidemic.Modern medical science has come to realize that this stress is at the root of a majority of the physical and mental illnesses that plague our society.Yoga and Ayurveda offer a pathway to deep relaxation and inner-awareness.This leads to connecting with the intrinsic power we all have to self-heal... a power from which we have largely been disenfranchised. As the great sage, Dr. David Frawley, notes in his introduction to this book, "Yoga and Ayurveda together show us how to achieve health, happiness, and well-being on all levels of our lives.Bhava Ram is one of the most dynamic teachers of Yoga and Ayurveda today.Bhava himself was reborn in the fire of disease... and has the wisdom from the other side, as it were, from one who is not attached to the ordinary things of this world. Bhava will show you the deeper dimensions of Yoga and inner healing that he himself has worked through in his own vast array of life-experience.The journalist/news reporter base he comes from has been transformed into a calm spiritual teacher, helpful friend, and compassionate guide for all who come to see him." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A user guide to healing through yoga
An excellent overview and in depth guide for healing through yoga. The author's fascinating insights and own life experiences as they relate to healing and yoga practice make this a must read for anyone considering yoga or those already practicing who want to go deeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving Deeper into Life and Yoga
This lovely little book offers spiritual sustenance for everyone from the advanced Hatha Yoga teacher to the beginning practitioner. In fact, there is much to be gleaned from "Deep Yoga" even among those who have never touched a sticky mat! This is because Bhava Ram has studied and lived the great spiritual tradition of Yoga, healing himself from a life-threatening illness, and emerged to teach the ancient wisdom in an accessible way for modern, busy Westerners.

Through a series of essays - about life, breath, ego, ritual, and gratitude to name a few - the author unveils Yoga as spiritual practice. We learn that the often-used word 'Yoga' actually means 'union' and offers vastly more than a physical work-out. There is an elaborate system of teachings and practices designed to bring us into an experience of the divine. Ram writes about daily life events through the lens of Yoga, and in this sense there are lessons that any seeker of truth could appreciate.

I think though Yoga practitioners and teachers would especially appreciate the book because, while not a how-to manual, it includes meditations, practices and mantras. The author lays out a specific heart-opening or cultivating gratitude practice, for instance. They aren't complex. You may even wonder why you never thought of them or why you simply don't practice them more often. But that is part of the magic offered by this yoga teacher. He lives the teachings daily and you can sense this through his writing.

One of the things you feel when reading the book, or practicing the techniques, is a sense of oneness - oneness with Mother Nature, self, others and the divine. Yet, the tone is down-to-earth and conveys that each of us can live Yoga right here and now, everyday, on and off the mat.

If you're looking for specific guidance on asana poses, that's not in this book. "Deep Yoga" is more about integrating the teachings passed down thousands of years ago from Indian sages into our current lives. If you want to delve deeper, Ram references the fundamental texts that gave birth to Yoga. But even with this introduction, you learn what some of those Sanskrit words really mean. And you may chuckle all the way to your local Yoga studio about how the West has interpreted this ancient, Eastern practice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Major resource for ayurvedic herbs
If you're looking for a textbook on ayurvedic herbs, here it is.

I've been interested in ayurvedic herbs but did not find anything with scientific references.Anecdotal reports are not enough.

A few examples:

Did you know the ficus tree is considered holy and is used for medicine?

Amla, which is a component of the formula "triphala" has been proven to dramatically lower cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids and low density lipoproteins by 82%, 66% 77% and 90% respectively.

REGRESSION OF AORTIC PLAQUES was observed. To put it plainly, when your arteries are clogged, this herb will help unclog them.

I do a lot of research on heart disease had never heard of this.

I know pseudoginseng, which is a Chinese herb, will do the same thing, but I did not know about Amla.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent, detailed and down-to-earth
This book is an excellent introduction to Ayurveda in general because all the theory is carefully detailed. However, the slant is towards women, so of course women will find this book extremely relevant.

The book explains that the stages of a woman's life, that is: childhood, adulthood, and old age, correspond to the the three arrangements of qualities, or humors. Therefore, there is relevant and interesting information for women of any age.Since this is a not a lengthy book, a woman looking for specific treatment or explanation of a condition will need supplemental books.

Nonetheless, this book contains such fascinating language and facts covering all aspects of Ayurveda that anyone who is interested in Ayurveda will be thrilled.I must emphasize that the page layout is very clear, simple, and contains pictures and summaries in the indentations, so it is a pleasure to look at. ... Product Description
This book provides an understanding of the vast potential we hold for creating health from within. Healing is not the purview of doctors and nurses – it is the power inherent in each of us, hidden deep in the essence of our beings. This truth is understood in the timeless knowledge of health known as Ayurveda. The mother of all the natural medicines, Ayurveda loosely translated means “the knowledge of longevity” or “the truth of life.” In this unique introduction to the “truth of life,” the power of consciousness contained in the healing art of ancient India is brought to the fore.

Ayurveda – The Power to Healprovides a modern framework for understanding the profundity of this ancient medicine. It clearly explains how Ayurveda utilizes diverse techniques from Yoga and meditation to herbs and aromas, in a comprehensive, coherent, and effective manner.

While modern medicine focuses on managing and treating disease, Ayurveda emphasizes promoting health. While allopathic medicine depends increasingly on specialists, Ayurveda places in your hands, the power to control your health and your destiny. The understanding of this system of medicine, as brought forth in this distinctive work, gives you a secret window into your own amazing capability – the power to heal.
