Product Description
Discover the four levels of traditional Tibetan healing science with this preventive health care manual for people of any age, culture, and physical type.* Includes material on little-known therapies such as Pancha Karma and Kum Nye, as well as guidelines for nutrition, longevity, detoxification, and meditation.* Author has studied with many of the best-known Tibetan and Ayurvedic physicians alive today.

Tibetan medicine was probably the first truly integrated system of ancient healing science. From the seventh to the tenth centuries, Tibetan kings encouraged physicians from India, China, Nepal, Persia, and Greece to teach their traditional medical sciences to Tibetan physicians, who at that time were primarily influenced by Ayurveda and shamanic healing modalities. This cross-cultural marriage of the greatest healing traditions makes Tibetan medicine ideally adaptable to Western health needs.

Tibetan Ayurveda provides a comprehensive guide to the four levels of traditional Tibetan medicine with a wealth of traditional health practices and teachings. Much of the contemporary material on Tibetan medicine focuses solely on herbal medicine and acupuncture; Tibetan Ayurveda goes beyond these to look at other important forms of treatment such as Pancha Karma for detoxification and rejuvenation and Kum Nye for integrating mind and body. A self-profile test is included to allow readers to determine their own health needs and embark on the path toward realizing their full potential for health and well-being. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars This is not really Tibetan
Having studied Ayurveda, and being a Tibetan buddhist practitioner, I'm getting tired of people, specifically writers, trying to mix together different cultures and lineages that just do not go together. Ayurveda is the ancient Indian system of natural medicine. It is not Tibetan, and no Tibetan lama I know calls Tibetan medicine "Ayurveda." Yes, there are absolutely similarities, and if you've studied Ayurveda, then learning Tibetan medicine will be much easier for you. I know, I've studied both systems. This book is about Ayurveda, with some Tibetan terms given as well, but for the most part, this is a book on Ayurveda. Tibetan medicine has other practices that are not even included here, for example, the practice of Moxa (or moxibustion). This is a HUGE part of Tibetan medicine, but for some reason, it's totally left out here. Why? Because this author is writing about AYURVEDA, not Tibetan medicine. He also tried to connect Chi Gung and Tai Chi to Tibet, as well. THESE AREN'T TIBETAN!!!

Please stop trying to sell books by writing about the vast secrets of Tibet, which turn out not to be Tibetan at all. If this was a book on Ayurveda, Tai Chi, and Chi Kung, I'd give it 4-5 stars. However, trying to play all this off as secret Tibetan practices is just ridiculous.

This is the perfect intro to my Tibetan Ayurvedic Medicine Course - thank you!It is beautifully written and easy to read.I must purchase!Rebecca

4-0 out of 5 stars A MODERN LOOK AT AN ANCIENT THERAPY
Although much of the contemporary material on Tibetan medicine focuses on herbs and acupuncture, they are only a small portion of this ancient healing practice. In Tibetan Ayurveda: Health Secrets From the Roof of the World, author Robert Sachs provides a more in depth, comprehensive examination of a highly integrated medical science that, at best, must seem very peculiar to most Western health practitioners. The primary source used by Sachs was the Gyud-Zhi.This is a shortened title for what can be translated as "The Ambrosia Heart Tantra: The Secret Oral Teachings on the Eight Branches of the Science of Healing."

Sachs points out that, according to Tibetan spiritual history, the origin of these tantras was the Buddha Vaidurya or the Medicine Buddha as he is commonly known. To present these teachings in the customary form of a dialogue, Buddha Vaidurya emanated Himself as two beings: the sage Yile Kye who raised pertinent questions and the sage Rigpe Yeshe who provided the answers. As for the secular history of the Gyud-Zhi, its teachings are believed to have originated in India. Then, in the eighth century, King Sronstan Gampo invited physicians from all over Asia to share their healing practices at what was probably the world's first international medical conference, which established Tibet as the holistic medical capitol of ancient Asia.

Sachs highlights the pertinent aspects of this eight-fold healing tradition, which includes diagnosis, lifestyle changes, nutrition, and both physical and meditative exercises. He points out that lifestyle changes are the least invasive of the therapies and therefore the most important.Upon diagnosis, a Tibetan physician will first look to diet and exercise to affect a change in a patient's condition. The diagnosis is based on a patient's physical characteristics much like Indian Ayurveda. The three physiological types are then subdivided by personality profiles thus formulating six constitutional types. Sachs includes self-evaluation tests then outlines the basic nutritional practices associated with each of the six types.Next, he examines exercise, which centers on Tibetan tai chi and chi kung, rejuvenation exercises, Yantra yoga and Kum Nye, the integration of mind and body, all considered integral to a well-rounded healing program. After instigating the various lifestyle changes, the Tibetan physician may then precipitate healing through Len Nga, a powerful detoxification and rejuvenation therapy similar to Indian Pancha Karma.

The one reservation I have is that Sachs likens the Tibetan practices to macrobiotics and alludes to several macrobiotic practitioners and their works.Although somewhat benign for healthy types, macrobiotics has never been independently confirmed as a realistic therapy for the seriously ill. I would be inclined to say that Tibetan practices have more in common with Indian Ayurveda rather than macrobiotics.Nevertheless, I highly recommend this work for both lay persons and health practitioners alike who would like to expand their horizons and add to their knowledge of alternative therapies. ... Product Description
No greater confusion exists than the relationship between Yoga and Ayurveda. Lost in the millennia, the essence of this knowledge is now in a state of revival. The fragmentation that has so divided the world into factions and religions and political parties is clearly represented in the common view of the relationship of Yoga and Ayurveda. The time has come for the fragmented approach to life to fall by the wayside and make room for the integrated wholeness that is the essence of life itself. The understanding of this ancient wisdom has been so lost that Yoga and Ayurveda are viewed as separate disciplines, each with its own tradition and philosophy. Nothing could be further from the truth.
This book draws on the ancient sages Patanjali and Charaka to demonstrate the unity of Yoga and Ayurveda. It gives essential keys to understanding the inner workings of health and how Yogic healing occurs. In addition, it gives a detailed understanding of the doshas, and subdoshas, and their connection with the chakras. This book is a must for any student of Ayurveda or Yoga.

2-0 out of 5 stars Little more than a coffee table book
While this book has beautiful pictures on every other page, and cute little blurbs about doshas and skin care, it is really not a very informative book on ayurvedic skin care.A person who has never heard of ayurveda before may benefit from the basic information in this book, but to anyone who has read another book on ayurveda, this book will be a dissapointment.I much prefered Melanie Sach's book Ayurvedic Beauty Care, or Pratima Raichur's Absolute Beauty, which are both much more in depth. However, if you are looking for a beautiful, interesting looking coffee table or bathroom book, this would be a good choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Such an easy read

5-0 out of 5 stars Educational Book
My daughter is studying massage therapy and requested this book. She said she is learning a lot from it.

5-0 out of 5 stars very interesting
A bit hard to rate, this is the first and only book I've ever read on the subject.
I write this anyway, just to say that I think the book, or maybe rather "the subject of the book" is marvelous, and I find that most of these "health-ideas" or whatever one should call them, work extremely well and are easilly applied to my own daily life. In the past few weeks I have experienced a genuine "getting-better-both-mantally-and-physically"-feeling, that includes waking ealier, sleeping less (but deeper and feeling more relaxed and well-rested when I wake up), feeling less tired in my body, and genreally feeling much clearer in my mind and my thinking

I have been "studying" various indian/eastern thoughts for the past 3-4 years, just for fun and because I find them interesting (and mostly true)and this sort of feels like the logical extension to most of it.

Im not a fanatic, Im not a member of any weird cult or bizare comunity ... I did stop smoking and drinking to much though, now you are warned :-) ... but I think that this ayur-veda can really teach one how to better listen to the body, and get better at responding to some quite clear signals that tell us - all day long - whether we are living in a healthy way or not ...¨

This book is good at linking the ayur-veda-thoughts to the general "yoga-philosophies" ... if you don't like this, maybe the book is not for you ... my sister read it and called it "brainwashing propaganda" ... I think it works well, and have some really good explanations/insights on many things ... read it and find out ... I highly recommend it

4-0 out of 5 stars A concise introduction to Ayurveda view of health and life
Davia Frawley says in foreword: Practical Ayurveda is an excellentintroduction to the system of Ayurveda and one that is concise, direct, and easy to understand. The book meets these observations. It is written to normal educated western audience. The author introduces the reader to thethree humors ( three kind of bodies- Vata, Pitta, Kapha). He givesdirections to identify one's body type. He explains how ayurveda viewsdisease as imbalance of humors. Food is recognised as medicine. A chapterdeals with herbs. ( Appendix givesthe terms in latin, indian context). Aseparate chapter on weight loss and beauty care, which are concerns ofmodern human being. He has written a chapter on sexual rejuvenrationmethods. He points out from Ayurvedic point of view, sexual pleasure ispostively viewed. The author is a spiritual seeker. He talks about his guruPoonjaji's a visionary trip to Himalayas where he observes that a sadhu cutoff from all human contacts has a girlie magazine under his stone pillow. The author point outs that celibacy and brahmacharya are not one and thesame. He also provides another woman seeker's personal observations in thiscontext. Yet, the chapter is not balanced; A good bibliography is given, which referrences to scientific journals. A ideal book for marriage gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars A concise introduction to Aryuvedic concepts
The foreword by David Frawley says:` Practical Ayurveda' is an excellent introductionto the system of Ayurveda and one that is concise, direct, and easy tounderstand. The book fulfills the observation. It introducesthe concept of differnet body types; how to recognise them, how to make thechanges in food habits and life style. He explains also the method ofAyurvedic diagnosis. The section onsex from Ayurvedic point of viewdiscusses about his guru's visionary trip in Himalayas and also one of hiswoman's friend's insights about relation of spirituality and sex. There isa good appendix relating terms in Latin, Indian and English ( herb names).Interestingly, referrences are given from journals also. It enhances thescientific nature of the book. Product Description
Ayurveda: A Way of LifeFirst published in 1990, and eversince published into various languages of the world, The Ayurveda: A Way of Life has become a classical work for attaining basic wisdom of Ayurveda and putting it into practice. Based on the ancient scriptures, the book has plenty of citations from the Vedas and from Ayurvedic scriptures. It is a scholarly book that is meant to give the reader an insight to the classical tradition of this 5000 years old discipline. At the same time, the book is a guide in the living tradition of Ayurveda and inspires you to assimilate this ageold wisdom into your daily lives for enhancing your energy to an optimum level. This book explains Ayurvedic wisdom in a scientific way without the claptrap of the religious gurus or the popular romantic notion of Ayurveda with oil dropping on your head. The book also highlights Ayurvedic psychology and the importance of sattva (peace and stillness of mind) for attaining mental balance and state of santosha (satisfaction), which is essentail for health according to Ayurvedic sages. The book suggests a middle path, does not suggest that you should give up your glass of wine, provides scientific explainations and makes you aware that your state of health in in your own hands. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Another look at a life style
This is intro for beginners. Dr Vinod Verma provides a thorough job explaining the concept of Ayurveda. She provides useful daily tips that "revitalizes" certain parts of the body. This book includes several photo illustrations on massage techniques and yoga poses for certain purposes and ailments. The chapter on adjustments to natural forces provides insight on what certain emotions does to the body. Some aspect of Hindu is introduced which I skipped over.Additionally, I skimmed over a portion of a chapter going over remedy concotions due to the reality of me chasing down the ingredients needed for some of the recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
Dr. Vinod Verma teaches Ayurveda in a way that I have never seen before; simple, easy to understand and apply to daily life! She starts off by defining what the 5,000 yr. old philosophy and practice is about, then moves on to define the tridosha (vata, pitta, kapha)theory, allowing the reader to determine which type they fall under, then moves on to discuss numerous techniques that bring the reader to an improved quality of life based on mind, body and spirit. What also impresses me about this author is that she doesn't sound overly "new age-ish," but reveals herself as intelligent, well-spoken and knowledgable. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in a more natural approach to total health.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good start for anyone who knows nothing about Ayurveda
Ayurveda is a science dealing with vedic medicine, which illustrates how illnesses of the body and mind can be cured through a gradual change in lifestyle. In her book, Dr Vinod Verma gives a very clear picture of Ayurveda for the beginner , right from remedies for common ailments(colds, insomnia etc) to yoga postures (Which actually do make you feel better!)However she has neglected an important aspect of the ayurvedic healing system.. the tridosha system wherein you determine what kind of body type you have and then based on that figure out an ideal diet for yourself or how to cure common ailments. THe tridosha system 1. vata(air) 2.pitta(fire) 3.kapha(water) are of vital importance . Thus the good doctor loses one star for dosha neglection. I suggest buying David Frawley's Ayurvedic Healing along with this book as these two books together will give you a decentunderstanding of Ayurveda,as a beginner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ayurveda Wisdom
We all know that there is a very real connection between the food we eat and the way we feel. At times, we try to eat right and get some exercise. Then we watch the news and find out that that there is a new super food or what we thought was nutritious has suddenly been linked to cancer increases. It's confusing to say the least.

I recently became interested in Ayurveda. These ancient principles suggest that different foods act in particular ways to return our bodies to our normal balance. Balance for each person is unique based upon our physical and mental constitution or dosha. A simple survey asks questions about physical characteristics, emotional reactions, personality traits, digestion issues, etc. These results indicate which of the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) is most prevalent and if there are any dosha combination concerns.

Using this information, and the wisdom set out in Ayurveda Wisdom, the reader learns to be aware of changes in emotional behavior and physical reactions that suggest that imbalances are occurring. Particular foods, according to type of taste (sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, or astringent), can then be used to rebalance the system.

With this information, I am learning to listen to my body and recognize when I'm in trouble. Instead of heading straight for those sweets, fast food, or other junk food, I am beginning to see the patterns. I've noticed when I feed my body what it needs, I don't crave the junk and I don't feel as anxious or overwhelmed.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Little Light, But Sometimes Just What You Need
This was the first ever book I read on Ayurveda, a life-style that has changed me drastically from the inside out in just a short two months. The book lacks a lot of depth, but is wonderful if you are just starting out, or want a friend or family member to learn more. It is very easy to read and understand and grasp the basic concepts of Ayurveda. Although I have read several other books on the subject, when I really need to focus on the basics, this is the book I turn too. ... Read more

himself to the reader and weaves his personal experience throughout.
I was surprised to discover a lot of information about these
practices that no one else talks about. He makes his message known
clearly that ashtanga yoga, ayurveda, and tantra are available for
anyone and everyone, at any age and any point in their life. I
couldn't put it down and would recommend it to yogis and non-yogi's
alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and humorous read, even for people new to yoga!
As a beginner to yoga, a friend suggested this book to me. I was reluctant to read it at first, but once I started, I couldn't put it down! Since then, it hasturned me on to a lot of new ideas and I am excited to learn more about all three topics. ... Read more

Product Description
A time-tested system for achieving health and happiness while balancing the demands of the modern woman's lifestyle.* A perfect handbook for any woman for whom quality of life is a central issue.* By one of the leading advocates of Ayurveda in the United States and the author of Ayurveda: Life, Health and Longevity.* Provides practical advice on exercise, sleep, diet, beauty care, meditation and massage, sex and relationships, childcare, and menopause.

In today's fast-paced world, Ayurveda provides a way for women to live their lives more simply, more naturally, and more contentedly. Women's roles in creating and sustaining balanced, healthy lives for themselves and their families have never been more crucial, and this compelling book will help them fulfill their goals despite the numerous demands placed upon them. Unlike many Western programs for health that treat all individuals the same, the 5,000-year-old science of Ayurveda identifies different physiological and psychological makeups and explains the lifestyle, diet, and environment most conducive to well-being for each.

Ayurveda, India's "science of life," is particularly ideal for healing and empowering the female body, mind, and spirit. Ayurveda for Women explores in detail the landmark changes associated with the three stages of life--childhood, adulthood, and old age--and provides practical advice on exercise, sleep, diet, beauty care, meditation and massage, sex and relationships, childcare, menopause, and other issues central to women's lives today. Simple to enact and profound in effect, Ayurveda could be the answer many women are seeking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ayurveda for Women:A Guide to Vitality and Health
Ayurveda is one of the oldest known systems of healing. It emphasizes the quality of life and all that can affect it.Dr. Robert Svoboda focuses on the health and happiness of women in Ayurveda for Women: A Guide to Vitality and Health, his latest book.

Dr. Svoboda is the first Westerner to graduate from a college of Ayurveda and be licensed to practice in India. He currently writes, teaches, and lectures internationally.

According to Ayurvedic principles, "every substance that we encounter and every action that we perform or that is performed on us influences our inner balance for good or ill."Dr. Svoboda adds that "Ayurveda aims to train individuals to evade disease, rather than insisting that they wait for illnesses to develop before they can be treated."

He describes three stages in women's lives-youth, adulthood, and old age-and provides complete information on the role of Ayurvedic practices in each stage.Essential to good health at any stage of life is "flow," that is, the ability of "substances and energies [to] continually and adroitly find their ways into and out of living organisms."In humans, this includes processes like digestion and menstruation.Blockages in any of the fourteen primary flows lead to problems.

Ayurveda is based on three "forces" which are called doshas. Dr. Svoboda describes the characteristics of each dosha, and provides a simple quiz that allows women to determine which dosha predominates in their life.He explains the strengths and weaknesses of each dosha, and how to incorporate those into daily life.

A balanced life includes exercise, sleep, diet, meditation, and good relationships.Ayurveda principles include becoming aware of the role of each of these, and practicing body-mind-spirit healing.Dr. Svoboda says that "the better you can awaken your awareness, the better you will flow through life, and the more health will accrue to you."Ayurveda for Woman provides all the information contemporary women need to achieve awareness, and does so in an easy to understand manner. It's essential reading for any woman interested in keeping herself and her family healthy and happy.

2-0 out of 5 stars informative yet condescending
As a woman interested in the art and science of Ayurveda I was of course drawn to this book.It is a very informative and helpful book but the tone of Svoboda's writing is very condescending. In the beginning the author appears to have great respect for women and the fact that they are the givers of life. But in every other paragraph to follow the doctor seems to make a point to talk down to the reader. It's hilarious actually.I wish I had the book in front of me to quote from.He even goes so far as to instruct mothers in how to raise their children.I don't know if this doctor is even a parent. He makes no mention of his own experience in this area. The amount of effort and energy that goes into creating and then raising up human beings is enormous and deserves respect and appreciation, which Svoboda for some reason is unable to offer to his readers. This book does little to truly support women of any age group now that I really think about it.Women need compassion, not simply facts and a "talking to" about how they should be doing better. So for all those who wish to read this book, you will find clearly presented valuable information about how Ayurveda relates to womenkind. But getting past Dr. Svoboda's holier-than-though tone is like scraping a heavy layer of ama off the tongue. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Ayurvedic Treasure
This is a little treasure of a book for US Practitioners and/or students of Ayurveda. The other versions of this book were in Sanskrit (and Bengali) or missing and the author did the work to track down the older versions and painstakingly translate it into English and Hindi. It's well-organized and, therefore, easy to use and includes food ingredients and what you might eat and drink other than just herbs.

Ayurveda is prevention in such a large way and a lot of people don't understand that it's lifestyle and nutrition far more than herbs. This book has the nutrition aspect as well as the herbs and spices. It is well worth a place in your Ayurvedic library! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Five Stars Arent Enough
Eureka!I have found it!This is one health book that is OFF THE SCALE GREAT!There are a lot of health books available these days that I find interesting. But this is one of those very rare books that seems to have been written by Nature itself. (How appropriate the title: Awakening Nature's Healing Intelligence). It is, as if, modern scripture.Like the petals of a flower which blossom in perfect sequence, so does the profound knowledge contained in this book unfold.

Dr. Hari Sharma, M.D. seems to be eminently qualified to write such a book.He is chairman emeritus at Ohio State University's College of Medicine and Public Health.A native of India, the origin of Ayurveda-- the world's oldest comprehensive system of natural medicine-- he has studied with the great sage Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who, along with India's foremost Ayurvedic physicians has refined and expanded Ayurveda into a very potent medical system-the Maharishi Vedic Approach to Health.Sharma's book describes this system and its underlying theory, as well as the impressive scientific research on its various modalities.

Sharma dives deep into the field of knowledge. Because he goes all the way, there are some passages through which I had to go slowly. But the effort was extremely gratifying. Otherwise, the pace was perfect-the petals of knowledge just unfolding sentence after amazing sentence. He seamlessly weaves in and out of the most advanced theories of quantum physics, empirical scientific findings and ancient Vedic wisdom.

Because he goes so deeply into the field of pure knowledge, Sharma makes it apparent what is achingly missing from the current Western medical approach. The many shortcomings of modern health care must stem from the lack of total knowledge of the ultimate reality of life. And that total knowledge is lucidly, and I would say historically presented in this book. During most of the reading of this book I had the strong desire for all medical doctors and health practitioners to be required to read it!
Dr. Sharma systematically takes the reader from the field of fragmented, partial knowledge that has plagued mankind for thousands of years, to enlightenment-the pinnacle of human evolution. He shows that this is the state of real health and well-being.All standards of health and approaches to it must be based on this complete view of human potentialities.

So this book is not just for health care providers.I feel that anyone who is a seeker of wisdom will revel in this book.If you really want to have the inside track on a most profound approach to health, you will love this book. While not a `how-to' book, it offers a list of expert resources one can seek out to pursue this path. And if you are even a bit as inspired as I am after reading this book, you will want to do just that.

5-0 out of 5 stars a keeper
I refer to this book often, as I have a great interest in the subject of Traditional Thai Medicine. It is well written and ultimately gives the reader a sense of the true depth of history behind the medicine that preceded Western culture in Thailand. The tradition that shaped medicine in Thailand exists today and this book opens the reader's eyes to its history, culture, and spirituality. That is what makes Thailand and its traditional medicine so unique.
