Extractions: As the events surrounding the weeklong strike by the Middletown Township Education Association (MTEA) spiraled further out of control last week, many in the community expressed fears of irreparable damage to the community. After more than a week out of class, students and teachers in Monmouth Countys largest school district finally returned to class on Monday after the union called an end to the strike early Friday morning. With about a quarter of the districts teachers in jail last week, parents angry that their children were being denied an education, and the safety of Board of Education members threatened, the negative impact of the strike on a community that lost 34 residents in the rubble of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11 was tremendous.

Middletown Teachers Back To School MIDDLETOWN After seven days of skipping school, Middletown Publicschool teachers went back to work Monday without a contract. http://www.newportthisweek.com/News/2001/0920/Community/023.html
Extractions: MIDDLETOWN After seven days of skipping school, Middletown Public School teachers went back to work Monday without a contract. Last Friday, Newport Superior Court Judge Daniel A. Procaccini ended the strike by granting an injunction to the Middletown School Committee, ordering the teachers back to work. Any teacher not reporting to work would be held in contempt of court, punishable by fines and/or imprisonment, according to the court order. After that, the ruling, teachers took a no-confidence vote in Superintendent Rosemarie Kraeger. The school committee and members of the Middletown chapter of the National Education Association are continuing their negotiations. Currently teaching to rule, the 269 district teachers will only adhere to their contractual obligations. For example, district teachers plan to refrain from all extra-curricular activities or engage in "extra-help" study time with students after school hours.
Extractions: The Capital-Journal At some point in everyone's education, they encountered at least one. One teacher, that is, who you still remember because she seemed to like you and like what she is doing. She cared and inspired and maybe changed you forever. Then there's that one teacher you'll remember because it seemed that before you said one word, she had it out for you. You wondered when you sat in class, why was this person teaching? No how many weeks or months or decades it has been since you were in school, that person still is with you. So, how should parents and students deal with teachers? How can parents make sure their students are receiving the most from school? Often the biggest challenge is a simple lack of communication either between the teacher and student, the teacher and parent, or the parent and student. Maybe even a combination of all three. Probably the most difficult communication barrier to deal with is the one between the parent and the teacher. They don't see each other daily, and they are rarely getting all the information they need from the student. "The more communication between parents and teachers the better," said Dr. Meredith Sargent, a clinical psychologist at Menninger. "Parents should treat teachers with respect and vice versa."
Extractions: 1. Be involved in your children's education. Parents' involvement helps students learn, improves schools and makes teachers' jobs easier. 2. Provide resources at home for reading and learning. Parents should have books and magazines for their children and read to or with their children each day. 3. Set a good example. Parents should show their children that they believe reading is enjoyable and useful. They shouldn't spend all their time in front of the TV either. 4. Encourage children to do their best in school. Parents must indicate that they believe education is important and that they want their children to do the best they possibly can. 5. Emphasize academics. Too many parents get caught up in athletics when academics should be their first concern. 6. Support school rules and goals. Parents should take care not to undermine school rules, discipline or goals. 7. Use pressure positively. Parents should encourage children to do their best, but they should not apply too much pressure by setting unattainable goals or by involving them in too many activities.

These workers play an important role in a child's development by caring for the child when parents are at work or away for other reasons. Some parents enroll their children in nursery schools or childcare centers primarily to provide them with the opportunity to interact with other children. In addition to attending to children's basic needs, these workers organize activities that stimulate the children's physical, emotional, intellectual, and social growth. They help children explore their interests, develop their talents and independence, build self-esteem, and learn how to behave with others.

As teachers move away from the traditional repetitive drill approaches and rote memorization, they are using more "props" or "manipulatives" to help children understand abstract concepts, solve problems, and develop critical thought processes. For example, they teach the concepts of numbers or adding and subtracting by playing board games. As children get older, they use more sophisticated materials such as science apparatus, cameras, or computers.
