Beginning with the Spanish conquest, we have a record of Mesoamerica and the Mayan Empire for the past five hundred years. Today, thanks to recent discoveries in the interpretation of the Mayan written language, we are beginning to scratch the surface of three thousand years of history. Many Mayan ruins that have been archeologically explored and excavated have not yet had their glyphs translated. The few that have reveal a world of pre Spanish city states that warred with each other for several thousand years. Many ruins exist in the jungles of Belize, the Yucatan Peninsula and the Peten, which until today have not yet been excavated to reveal their history. many more ruins are yet to be found. The city states of Mesoamerica rivaled, and probably surpassed, the social organization and development of Medieval cities in Europe. This is an exciting time for archeology and anthropology students, because the history of the early Maya civilization is yet to be filled in by field studies. Now that the written language is being deciphered, we will in future years be able to compile a history going back in some cases for four thousand years, long before the time of Christ.

Extractions: History of Belize N umerous ruins indicate that for hundreds of years Belize was heavily populated by the Maya Indians, whose relatively advanced civilization reached its height between A.D. 300 and 900. The civilization collapsed and many of the people migrated. In 1502, Columbus sailed into and named the Bay of Honduras but he did not actually visit the area later known as British Honduras. T he first recorded European settlement was established in 1683 by shipwrecked British sailors. These were later augmented by disbanded British soldiers and sailors after the capture of Jamaica from Spain in 1655. The settlement, whose main activity was logwood cutting, had a troubled history during the next 150 years. It was subjected to numerous attacks from neighboring Spanish settlements. I t was only in 1763 that Spain in the Treaty of Paris allowed the British settlers to engage in the logwood industry. This was reaffirmed by the Treaty of Versailles in 1783 and the area of logwood concession was extended by the Convention of London in 1786. But Spanish attacks continued until a decisive victory was won by settlers, with British naval support, in the Battle of St. George's Caye in 1798. A fter that British control over the settlement gradually increased and in 1862 British Honduras was formally declared a British Colony. From an early date the settlers had governed themselves under a system of primitive democracy by Public Meeting. A constitution based on this system was granted in 1765 and this, with some modification continued until 1840 when an Executive Council was created. The Crown Colony system of Government was introduced in 1871, and the Legislative Assembly by its own vote was replaced by a nominated Legislative Council with an official majority presided over by the Lieutenant Governor.

The lagoons are to the western (leeward) side of the island. The Barrier Reef lies about a half mile to the east of the island, running the entire length, the reef and the land touching at the northeast of the island at Rocky Point. Extractions: Prehistory is the study of people without writing, while history is the study of the societies that possessed writing (Stuart and Houston 1989: 129) The history of Mesoamerica begins well before Christopher Columbus landed in the New World in 1492. Spanish priests and soldiers were the first Europeans to see Maya glyphs. Although these Europeans were intrigued by the strangeness of the signs, their strong Christian beliefs against any display of paganism literally forced them to consign the native documents to the bonfire, to neglect, or to ultimate oblivion in innumerable official archives (Houston 1989: 8). THE SPANISH ERA In 1517, when Spanish explorers landed on the coast of Yucatan, the peninsula was divided into city-states constantly at war with each other and trying to establish their own boundaries. Each city state had a ruler, the "halach uinic" under which were an elite of brave warriors. The priesthood had enormous influence over the lives of the Maya whose lives were ruled by religion and the calendar . The priests were in charge of keeping the books and the calendar (Coe 1992: 71-72). The most comprehensive work about the Mayas was Fray Diego De Landa's Relacion de las Cosas de Yucatan ("Account of the Things of Yucatan") written around 1566. De Landa's work contains a description of "Maya calendrical signs and a mysterious alphabet" which became the key to solve the Mayan Hieroglyphs (Houston 1989: 8). However, for almost 300 years the manuscript remained unrecognized until interest in Maya glyphs was rekindled in the nineteenth century. De Landa's account of the Maya days and months did not come to light until 1863 (Coe 1992: 73-80).

The Mayans were excellent craftsmen, skilled at making pottery, carving jade and crafting elaborate costumes of feathers, but are perhaps most famous for their incredible mathematical systems and calendars and their use of a complex writing system that is still not completely deciphered. In the 10 th century however, the Belize population began suffering a mysterious decline and most immigrated to Yucatan. But there were still many inhabitants in Belize when the Spanish arrived and began conquering much of the Americas in the 16 th century. The Spaniards tried to control Belize as well, but the Mayan warriors held them back. Even though the Spanish never managed to get a lasting hold on the area, they further decimated the Mayan population with the spreading of European diseases.

Several major archeological sites notably Caracol, Lamanai, Lubaantun, Altun Ha, and Xunantunich reflect the advanced civilization and much denser population of that period. European contact began in 1502 when Columbus sailed along the coast. The first recorded European settlement was begun by shipwrecked English seamen in 1638. Over the next 150 years, more English settlements were established. This period was also marked by piracy, indiscriminate logging, and sporadic attacks by Indians and neighboring Spanish settlements. Great Britain first sent an official representative to the area in the late 18th century, but Belize was not formally termed the Colony of British Honduras until 1840. It became a crown colony in 1862. Subsequently, several constitutional changes were enacted to expand representative government. Full internal self-government under a ministerial system was granted in January 1964. The official name of the territory was changed from British Honduras to Belize in June 1973, and full independence was granted on September 21, 1981.

Where in the world would people name towns Gallon Jug, Washing Tree, Double Head Cabbage, Orange Walk Town, Burrel Boom, and Monkey River? Nowhere else but easy-going Belize, the world's number one producer of humorous place names. Perhaps these names are a product of Belize's distinctive history. Belize was once part of the great Maya Indian civilization. The Spanish came in the 1500s, claimed Belize, and tried a few tentative settlements. Finding no gold or silver, they soon left. In the 1600s, English pirates used Belize's numerous coves and offshore islands as bases from where they launched raids on Spanish treasure fleets. Along with their booty, the pirates carried stories of Belize's huge mahogany forests back to England. Soon British loggers and their slaves set up camp among the pirate bases. Pirates, loggers, and slaves mingled. As time passed, new groups were added to the mixture. An ethnically diverse nation was born. Today about half of Belize's population is of mixed ancestry, descendants of loggers, pirates, and slaves; with negro slave blood predominating. The rest of the population is quite a hodgepodge. About twenty percent are Mayan Indians; Kekchi Mayas who have always lived in Belize, and Mopan Mayas who came in the 1860s, fleeing a civil war in Mexico's Yucatan peninsula. Another ten percent is German Mennonite. They came looking for a place to practice their simple agrarian religion, and today their farms are Belize's breadbasket.
