Extractions: Julie Nicoletta's perceptive text and Bret Morgan's striking photographs illuminate the austere beauty, regional variations, and functional and stylistic evolution of Shaker buildings over the course of two centuries, evoking a visual and literary survey of Shaker design and its impact on our culture at large. Despite the fact that Shaker communities are almost extinct, appreciation for their legacy continues to grow. Architects, designers, curators, collectors, and an ever-widening public seek inspiration in Shaker art and architecture. The Architecture of the Shakers is a book for all those who wish to learn more about these remarkable buildings and how the rich cultural legacy of the Shakers continues to resonate within them. "While not the first book to treat American Shaker utopian villages and facets of their building heritage, this new volume does so in a more comprehensive, in-depth, and analytical manner than any previous work to appear in print on the subject . . . Outstanding."

Extractions: Lavish, inspiring, and delightful! Lake Side View landscape image This is a lavish picture book, meant to inspire and delight the reader with the vibrant colors of Mexican architecture, design, home furnishing, art, and artifact. Mexico is color incarnate, and Amanda Holmes's gorgeous full-color photographs bear this out graphically and spectacularly, showcasing everything from grand architectural facades to tiny decorating touches that enliven a corner; bring life to a small, dark room; or pull the brilliance of the sun indoors. Mexican culture uses color to dramatic effect in textiles, clothing, homes, markets, contemporary and folk art, interior design, and modern and ancient architecture. The author calls Mexico "the resting place of the rainbow," and the vibrant pictures and lively text of this beautiful book prove her right! 200 photos. Reader Review: "I like colors, I like Mexico and, as a result, I was left breathless looking at Holmes' photos. Not only is it a first rate printing job, but Holmes shows that she is an exciting and capable photographer. She is extraordinarily sensitive to color, texture and design, selecting architectural details that left me shaking my head and breathing deeply. Some of her photographs made me feel as if my batteries were recharging. And Poniatowska's commentary is pure poetry."

Extractions: INTRODUCTION Covered bridges represent a link with our past. They stand as monuments to builders who had the vision and the ability to design and construct engineering masterpieces of wood. Men such as Ithiel Town, Stephen Long, James Tasker, and more recently, Milton Graton have left a lasting impression on the landscape. The romanticist might see that covered bridges represent a more relaxed time, free from the stress of modern age. These structures evoke images of a slow horse and buggy ride to church on a quiet Sunday, a stolen kiss under the cover of the bridge, or the peacefulness of fishing from a seat on the edge of the bridge, line in the water yet indifferent as to whether or not a fish bites. The historian might see in these spans the development of truss types still in use today, the original attempts to understand the strength of materials, and the analysis of stress on complex structures. Everyone can agree that these bridges were essential to progress by replacing dangerous ferry crossings, reducing the isolation of rural areas, increasing travel speed, and aiding commerce. Because of their obvious antiquity and their visual appeal, covered bridges have long been appreciated. New Hampshire's wooden bridges were highlighted in W. Edward White's 1942 booklet

During the eighteenth century in this part of the US commerce was growing and there was an ever increasing need to be able to reliably transport goods across the often flooded creeks and rives. The most plentiful building material for bridges was wood. But left exposed, the life of the timbers was quite short. While covered bridges could provide protection from passing storms for travelers, the real reason for the covering is to protect the bridge's wood support structure, it's truss, from the weather to extend the life of the bridge. Taking pictures of local covered bridges started as a photographic self-assignment. My original goal was to make a good image of each bridge. I soon discovered that not all bridges are located in photogenic locals. That some bridges are located where they are never in good light. That there are many distracting road signs, power and telephone polls and wires located near covered bridges. And that around many of the bridges, and along the water ways they cross, there can be a lot of trees and underbrush. This last item meant that the best time to get a clean view of these bridges is when most of the leaves are off the trees. So the goal changed a bit: Where possible to create a good image and for the others to simply document the bridge and its present day environment.
