Product Description

From Dhaka to Jamdani, from Crocodile to Rickshaw, B Is for Bangladesh profiles a young country, once part of India, with an ancient history and centuries of tradition. Vibrant photographs show the resilient Bangladeshi people, who welcome visitors with a smile. Most of the citizens are Muslims, but there are also Hindus, Christians, and Buddhists, all featured here. The book also showcases the country's natural wonders in striking images of the world's largest mangrove forest, where tigers roam; and the rivers that criss-cross the land, feeding the rice-fields as they flow south. From everyday items like food and clothing, to historical and cultural sites, B Is for Bangladesh shows young readers what it's like to live in this fascinating country.

Product Description
In recent years, shrimp aquaculture, which isundertaken largely in the tropical countries, hasexperienced spectacular growth in response toexpanding global demand and higher economic return.Despite a number positive aspects (e.g., foreignexchange, employment and food) of shrimp farming, theindustry has serious negative environmental impacts.Because of the degradation of natural resources, commercial shrimp farming imposes socio-economiccosts on rural resource-reliant communities as theirtraditional means of food production and livelihoodsare displaced. Bangladesh is suffering because ofunplanned expansion of this aquaculture andincreasingly called as ?a desert in the delta?. Thecentral concern of this book is to applyparticipatory research techniques to identify andunderstand the impacts of commercial shrimp farmingto the livelihood patterns of coastal villagers insouthwest Bangladesh. Product Description
Today, the effect of global climate change is clear to all. It is clearly dangerous in developing countries such as Bangladesh. The industrial revolution caused major changes in technology, socio-economy and cultures in the late 18th and early 19th century, beginning in Britain and spreading throughout the world. The technology dominated economy was mostly dependent on energy produced from fossil fuel, which still holds true today. It is well known that fossil fuel burning has increased the GHGs to the atmosphere, thus creating global warming. Among the GHGs, the concentration of CO2 has been confirmed as the largest. Terrestrial ecosystems are clearly influencing the concentration of GHGs in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases are constantly entering and leaving the atmosphere. Actively growing trees and other plants absorb CO2 from the atmosphere, combine it with water through photosynthesis and create sugars and more stable carbohydrates. Through this process, trees capture and store atmospheric CO2 in vegetation, soils and biomass products. The Kyoto Protocol, in 1997, explored a flexible mechanism, CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) where Annex I and non-Annex I parties interact for climate change mitigation. Forestry activities have been considered important in the arena of climate change as they act both as a sink and sources of carbon. The purpose of this book is to highlight the means of efficiently reducing global warming through forestry options in Bangladesh and the positive implications of CDM. ... Read more

Product Description
Introducing Bangladesh, its people and the ways in which they earn a living, this book looks at the effects their wealth has on their way of life. It includes information on the Ganges, hurricanes, floods and monsoons, and a case study of a community on an island at the mouth of the Ganges delta. The book is part of a series based around the illustrations used in Wayland's Economically Developing Countries series, but reducing the reading age and amount of text to make the books accesible at a lower level. It deals with economic activity and development in the world's poorer countries and contains case studies of communities and individuals. ... Read more
