1-0 out of 5 stars That someone would sell this is shameful
Yes--old Wikipedia articles rehashed and barely proofread. Wikipedia's coverage of esp. Indian and Pakistani topics is bad: everyone's uncle sticks their name in the article for their caste, copyediting is seen as an insult, and references are not to be found. This book collects a bunch of those and charges you--wait, no way, $333? Browse through the title using Google Books and you'll see why you shouldn't even read this if they pay you. The ultimate irony is the editor (fragmentary) remark on his book, "In the face of achieving the target of universal supremacy." Right on.

The author gives a candid, no-holds-barred account of the Pakistan army. He describes its evolution, its brutal suppression of the former East Wing (now Bangladesh), the events leading to the overthrow of Prime Minister Bhutto in 1977, and other dramatic episodes. This new edition contains an additional chapter which describes the dramatic resignation of the Army Chief in 1998 (giving his hitherto unpublished reasons), and the intrusion into Indian-administered territory in Kashmir by Pakistan-backed militants in 1999. The author makes use of information provided by senior foreign officials as well as highly-placed Indian and Pakistani sources. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Propoganda
Brian Cloughley falls into that category of "experts" who happily serve as mouthpieces for the Pakistan Army. He is neither an expert on South Asia, nor a scholar, and his book is not an objective attempt to examine the Pakistan Army.

Given his own history, and the volume of his editorials in Pakistani newspapers, where he has ever shown himself ready to defend Pakistan and its Army against any and all criticism, as well as promote the Army's opinion that its control of Pakistan is superior to any rule by politicians or mere "civilians", the contents of his books should be examined from the perspective that this is how the Pakistan Army views itself and would like others to see it.

For a much better, but still sympathetic treatment, of the Pakistan Army look to Pakistan Army.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read
Nice. Very nice. Its fun to read a book that describes at close quarters one of the finest armies of the world. It sounds a bit condescending towards the polticians, but anyways, that's not its main focus. It does justice to its subject and is very accurate, less some minor fallacies....

4-0 out of 5 stars other's reviews
The 2 reviews with a severely critical but uninformed view of this book are blatantly obvious in their indian propagandist approach. The persons who have written them have not even read the said book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stupid topic stupid book
I don't understand why anyone would want to write a book on a rogue army that has always suffered defeat, humiliation and abused human rights. The pakistan army murdered 3 million innocent bangladeshis in 1971 in the worst genocide of the 21st century. The pakistan army is one of the most poorly trained and undisciplined armies in the world.Rapes and murders are a plenty.

The army brings shame to pakistan.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly done work
A very boring and irritating analysis of one of the world's most poorly trained and un-professional armies.Up there in the list of armies who can get the job done are the United states,UK,India etc Unfortunately the Pakistan army needed to do a genocide against the poor Bangaldeshis(3 million is not something to be ignored) to get some attention but that only resulted in their doom at the hands of the Indian army. The positive proof that the pakistan army is one of the world's worst is their employment of Mujahideen who are in fact, better trained and motivated. This book can mislead people as well as force the average pakistani to turn his view towards the military instead of concentrating on food, education, employment etc. It's about time the pakistanis forget about their failed military and take up other duties for their own welfare. ... Product Description
No river has kindled Man's imagination like the Ganges. From its icy origins high in the Himalayas, this sacred river flows through the holy cities and the great plains of northern India to the Bay of Bengal. In a country where the red heat of summer inspires prayer for the coming monsoon, the life-giving waters of the Ganges have assumed legendary powers in the form of the Hindu goddess Ganga, the source of creation and abundance. Pilgrims flock to her shores to cleanse and purify themselves, to cure ailments, and to die that much closer to paradise. Steven Darian writes of the human experience and the legendary myths that surround the Ganges. While collecting material for this book, Dr. Darian lived by the Ganges, explored her shores, and was a pilgrim to the Ganga Sagar festival at Sagar Island off Calcutta where the sacred river and the ocean merge. ... Product Description
Combining over 1,000 brilliantly colored photographs, videos, music, and text, this CD-ROM documents a distinctive folk art of urban Bangladesh. The owners of rickshas (conventionally known as "rickshaws" in English) personalize their vehicles with elaborate paintings that incorporate geometric motifs, drawings of animals, mythic and religious themes, and pictures of movie stars. Ricksha art is an expression of the fondest desires in men's hearts - for wealth, sex, power, one's village home, religious blessings, and consumer goods.

Joanna Kirkpatrick has photographed these vehicles for more than 20 years, cataloging styles and motifs. Her study becomes a window on Bangladesh culture and religion, as she examines the questions posed by pictorial representation in a Muslim society. Thanks to Transports of Delight, general audiences interested in South Asian folk art and aficionados of pedicabs around the world will join scholars and students of Bangladesh on an enjoyable and informative journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars engaging new CD-ROM on the popular art of Bangladesh
Joanna Kirkpatrick
Transports of Delight: The Ricksha Arts of Bangladesh
Indiana University Press (2003)

An appealing review and analysis of the ricksha arts of Bangladesh, with comparisons to popular arts in India and Pakistan, this interactive multimedia CD-ROM is informative and easy to navigate.Besides the large number of excellent color images of rickshas and the art that decorates them, there are four video clips, shot with a hand-held camcorder, that give a vivid impression of what it is like to travel by ricksha through the city streets and country roads of Bangladesh. These clips employ both folk songs and natural sound. The introduction is also backgrounded by a contemporary Bengali ballad that invokes Kirkpatrick's interpretive theme of the CD.

The CD-ROM is divided into four main sections (Introduction, Ricksha Art Images, Streets and Views, and Readings).Sub-sections address various topics, including the history of "conveyance art," comparisons of ricksha art to other genres of popular and folk art, and recurrent themes seen in ricksha decoration.A sub-section on artists and makers examines how rickshas are made and decorated. Each sub-section includes illustrated text discussions and a gallery of photographs supplementing the points the author has made.

The text and the four articles in the Readings file raise important questions, such as how "iconophilic" South Asia reconciles with Muslim uneasiness about the depiction of human figures, and the ways that popular imagery pique or satisfy a largely male audience's desires. These and other timely discussion points make this CD-ROM an ideal resource for courses on the art or visual ethnography of South Asia.It should also be of great interest both to scholars of the region, and to general readers interested in world popular and folk art.

Product Description
This book studies postcolonial Bangladesh and shows how the state failed to create an industrial bourgeoisie class. The author explores concepts of the postcolonial state, colonialism during the British period, postcolonial Bangladesh under various regimes, the influences of democracy, and alternatives through which Bangladesh may become a civil society. This highly analytical and interpretive study offers a "solution" to the problem by calling for a participatory development and abandoning the idea of modernity. A table of contents and a list of abbreviations make this book an especially thorough and pragmatic reference tool. ... Read more

Product Description
In this fascinating book, Taj I. Hashmi takes a long historical view of the position of women in society in general and that of Muslim women under Islam in particular. He argues that women have been under male domination in all societies ever since the days of Socrates and that this is not particular to Islam or Muslim societies. Then he explores how women in urban and rural Bangladesh are persecuted at the behest of the self-proclaimed custodians of Islam or mullahs. NGOs active in the country are also not free from the accusation of exploiting women in the name of empowering them. Nor has militant feminism done much good to the cause of their liberation. Dr Hashmi finds hope in the work of a large body of educated Bangladeshi men and women in eradicating not only poverty but also illiteracy and religious fanaticism as a surer way to women's liberation from male domination. ...
