5-0 out of 5 stars wonderfully written
Great book that includes typical player by player mini-biography.Would rank this one right up there with Jordan Rules, Playing for Keeps etc.

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointing and crude
This book was a terrible disappointment.I ordered it to give as a gift for a boy interested in basketball, but after paging through and reading a bit, decided that it was in no way suitable. It is poorly written, with crude language, choppy structure, and questionable content, as far as whether the information is really anything readers want or need to know, and what seems like speculation/inference more than truth about people's motives and actions.

4-0 out of 5 stars The 1992 Dream Team: Behind Closed Doors
Yes, I really think that Cameron Stauth's book is a heckuva entertaining read. I have encountered very few authors that put as much zip on their narratives as he does.In particular, there is no doubt that Stauth's book poignantly revolves around Earvin "Magic" Johnson and how he handles his recently discovered status as being HIV-positive. In that regard, the author presents Johnson in a very fair and consistent manner, where he certainly isn't flawless but he was truly the heart and soul of the 1992 U.S. Men's Olympic basketball team (aka "the Golden Boys") (aka "the Dream Team"). The major supporting storylines feature Dream Teamers Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, and Charles Barkley, as they each have their own complicated issues affecting their careers.

Stauth effectively (and cleverly) weaves in biographical material about each of the players, as he explores the team's selection process, the 1992 NBA season, and the various hijinks before and during the Olympics. Of particular note, the section about how head coach Chuck Daly and his assistants were selected through backroom politics seemed very plausible, if not amusing. Another highlight is the early section about an incredible "anything goes" shoot-around game of H-O-R-S-E between Johnson, Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Clyde Drexler, and Chris Mullin. Stauth's reporting here seems top notch, as he describes it so well that you can easily visualize it in front of your eyes.

The only hazard light I wish to mention about this book is Stauth's frequent tendency to get inside a player's head and describe what he thinks or is feeling (i.e. how much Jordan despises Isiah Thomas). To the author's credit, he points out how wary the Dream Teamers were around journalists, but Stauth doesn't explain how he was somehow an exception.I suspect that no Dream Teamer (let alone any high-end pro athlete) would realistically have been that candid with any journalist.Hence, Stauth's credibility, at times, seems rather strained.Still, his "insider" accounts seem quite plausible and may be at least basically true, but there is really no way to know how much has been enhanced or exaggerated by the author's own speculation. In other words, how often is Stauth stretching the truth for dramatic purposes?

For instance, you should first read Stauth's version of Larry Bird's agony over whether or not to retire before or after the Olympics, and then compare it to Bird's own insightful account in his 1999 autobiography, "Bird Watching." Their two versions don't exactly match (and Bird makes no mention of Stauth as a confidant), so it certainly makes one wonder how much of the players' true feelings are actually exposed here. Therefore, deciding which of the book's surprising revelations is really Stauth's imagination is up to the reader, I suppose.

Overall, it is a superb read for NBA fans, if not taken too seriously. 4 **** out of 5.

1st Note: this book should definitely be rated PG-13 (for profanity and some vulgar sexual references). I wouldn't recommend letting kids read this book for this reason.

2nd Note: Unlike the hardcover edition, the updated paperback version has a brief epilogue discussing Bird's retirement and Johnson's aborted Fall 1992 return to the L.A. Lakers and the NBA. ... Read more

Product Description

Those who avidly followed the on-court acrobatics and off-court celebrity of the “Dream Team” in Barcelona in 1992 would hardly recognize what passed as basketball fifty-six years earlier, when the United States first played the game in the 1936 Olympics. In those early days of men’s Olympic basketball, many teams lacked basic skills, games were played in the pouring rain, only seven players could suit up, and the rules allowed only two substitutions and no time-outs. How this slow, low-scoring sport became the breakneck game that enraptures millions worldwide is the story of American Hoops.

In this fascinating history of Olympic basketball on the world stage and behind the scenes, Carson Cunningham presents a kaleidoscopic picture of the evolution into the twenty-first century of one of America’s most popular sports. From clashes between celebrated egos and thrilling action on the court to the intense rivalries of the Cold War and technological advances in everything from television to sports equipment off the court, American Hoops follows the fortunes of Olympic basketball, in the United States and internationally, as it developed and emerged as one of the most challenging and entertaining sports in the world.

Cunningham traces how the modifications made by the International Olympic Committee and the International Basketball Federation have transformed the game of basketball over the years, from the Berlin to the Beijing Olympics. His book offers a remarkable view of the changing world through the prism of Olympic sport.

5-0 out of 5 stars American Hoops Review
"American Hoops" by Dr. Carson Cunningham has proven to be an excellent read during my 2010 Florida vacation. For those who closely follow basketball, especially college and professional teams and players, this will be a wonderful memory trip over the last sixty years.Because the Olympics occur every four years, the book and it's related chapters, progress thought the years with new players, coaches, and Olympic games occurring every thirty pages or so. While I was aware of rule changes in the way basketball has been played over the years, this book clearly outlines the various changes, which group promoted them, and who resisted the changes. One will be shocked at the rules in place and the playing conditions in the 1936 Olympics as compared to the rules and conditions that exist in 2010.While the focus of Dr. Cunningham's writing is basketball, he also includes in the book various geopolitical, cultural, commercial (especially basketball shoes sales), telecommunication, and American political sports issues that clearly impacted the Olympics and the basketball games that organization hosted. The book's content are an interesting case study of the emerging "Flat World" as described by Friedman in his several books. I don't recommend the book for those interested in a fast read. For those who follow major college basketball teams and conferences, there will be many player and coach names to recall. Being a Midwestern resident and a follower of Big Ten sports, I found the book especially interesting because of all the players and coaches that were eventually a part of Olympic teams or tryouts.Dr. Cunningham has interviewed many people for the book and their stories and remembrances add significantly to the subject.Including the comments of various international sports writers and participants also offer a more comprehensive and less American-centric view of events during the Olympics.I would strongly recommend Dr. Cunningham's new book to those who closely follow basketball and I look forward to future writing efforts on the authors part.

5-0 out of 5 stars Witty, historical read, full of unexplored info...
As an Indiana native and Purdue fan, I was excited to find this book from the cerebral former Boiler point guard. As a basketball and Olympics fan, I was very intrigued by the author's choice of topic. But what I didn't plan for was the depth and scope of Cunningham's work. He seems to be the perfect writer for his subject, with an evident curiosity for American history, an obvious passion for basketball, an easy ability to contextualize his research within the larger scope of recent world history, and enough fluidity and skill as a writer to keep me interested page to page, chapter to chapter. Of particular note: Interviews with high-profile Olympic basketball coaches and players, like John Wooden and Gene Keady and Adrian Dantley; a thoroughly researched run-down of the first organized Olympic hoops tournament (played outdoors!); and a gripping analysis of the most controversial 1972 gold medal game between USA and U.S.S.R. (Also, the photos are great--logical and surprising.)
Like a lot of sports fans, I consider myself knowledgeable and informed when it comes to both basketball history and the Olympics, but what I realized while reading Cunningham's book was that much of what I know only skims the surface. He deeply and keenly explores (1) the influence basketball has had on the spread of democracy, (2) the competitive ascendancy of national teams like the U.S.S.R. and China, and (3) the footprint American basketball teams and "celebrities" have had on the international community when it comes to travel and personal freedom, free-market commerce, fashion, and systemic athletic excellence. Cunningham's book confirms for me a long-held instinct--that sport can and does bear a greater influence on our cultural history than even fans realize, and that an exploration like this is not only a worthwhile endeavor for the author, but a cornucopia of facts and tales and theories for readers like me. I highly recommend this book to any sports fan, but even more strongly recommend it for anybody interested in general economics or recent world history. ... Read more

Excerpt: The American Samoa national soccer team is the national team of American Samoa and is controlled by Football Federation American Samoa. It is one of the weakest teams in the world, and holds the dubious distinction of suffering the largest loss in international football history, having been defeated by Australia 310 on April 11, 2001. American Samoa's weakness is due to both its small population and the popularity of American football, baseball and basketball. American Samoa has never won a FIFA-sanctioned match. The team has only recorded one victory in its history over Wallis and Futuna in the group stage of the 1983 South Pacific Games football tournament, when neither team was a member of FIFA (Wallis and Futuna Islands still is not). The game finished 3-0 to American Samoa, but was not enough to prevent them finishing bottom of their group.
