5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible!
Lots of diverse ideas and techniques for beadwork. The exhaustive reference section is the BEST I've seen in any bead art book. A must-have!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for someone who already knows the basic techinques.
I bought this book to add to my collection. It wasn't my first purchase but after borrowing it from someone I had to have one.Great photos and great information! This book has given me many ideas for various projects!

4-0 out of 5 stars Yes, beads are irresistible
I must agree with Linda -- beads are definitely irresistible. And, like potato chips, you can't have just one.Unlike most bead books, this one does not start with tools needed or techniques.Linda starts with the elements of design, important to all art.You need to know about line, shape, texture, color, and creating a focal point before learning how to make a piece of art.Linda does not neglect techniques, leading you through wire work, bead stringing, beading on a ground, woven beadwork, and the use of polymer clay.To inspire, she includes a 12-page gallery and designer notes. What makes this book a handy reference is the appendix which includes bead sizes, standard jewelry lengths, findings, gemstones, birthstones, design charts, and a metric conversion chart. So helpful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Beginning Designers
This book starts with a chapter on color, design, and the texture. It ends with a basic list of tools and supplies for making the projects in the book.

There are chapters on wireworking, bead stringing, bead embroidery, woven beadwork, and polymer clay. There are a few projects in each chapter but I really love the Designer's Notes at the end of the chapter. These pages include sketches of other ideas that can be created with the technique just learned.

The gallery is yummy with enough to whet your appetite for more or better yet, making your own masterpiece(s).

But the Appendix is what I really love about this book. There are guides to bead sizes, a standard list of jewelry lengths, and pictures of basic jewelry findings. Plus a glossary of precious and semiprecious stones; a beader's glossary of terms; birthstones - both traditional and astrological; blank graphs for loom/square, peyote, and brick stitches.

5-0 out of 5 stars A few great pieces
This is a beautifully done jewelry-making book. The pages are nicely organized and uncluttered with large, colorful photographs and drawings that clearly show details of the jewelry pieces. There are a few items I don't care for, but most are very pretty with wonderful color and texture combinations, in a variety of styles.

This is not a complete beading book however, for example, as one reviewer mentions, there are no instructions for knotted bead jewelry.Rather, the author focuses on a few techniques, with a few projects given for each technique:wirework (brooch, stickpin, a beautiful "cleopatra" necklace, and a wire-wrapped rock bracelet); bead stringing (choker, three pretty necklaces of different designs, beaded watch strap, and an Indian-look fringed bead necklace); sewing beads onto a surface (brooch, pin, necklace); woven beadwork (daisy chain necklace, diamond shaped earrings, bracelet, peyote stitch pouch necklace...all made with seed beads); polymer clay beads (which includes instructions for making the beads, some in the shape of flowers).

My only complaint is that there are only a few projects for each technique.Yet, some of them are so very pretty that I decided the low price of the book justified its purchase.

Note for beginners: There is not a techniques section; instead the techniques are taught within each project's instructions, so a beginner should start at the front, where the most basic techniques are taught, and work her way through the book.Although the instructions are mostly clearly explained and illustrated, a little prior experience with jewelry findings (such as clasps), and doing some wirework may be helpful. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not for seed bead starters
This is not a starter book even though bead stitch techniques are shown much-enlarged in photographs. Jeanette's book provides an excellent springboard for the intermediate to advanced beader. The projects use seed beads and you will be required to be as competent with thread tension as you are with netting, brick stitch and peyote stitch. Are you bored with too-simple projects? Try some of Jeanette's ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Turning seed beads into jewelry art
This is a jewelry making book for those who love to work with seed beads. Each chapter teaches a beading method and then follows with several projects utilizing that method.

The first method is the Back Stitch Technique in which beads are sewn onto a surface into a design, or sewn around the edge of a cabochon (a stone that is rounded and polished on one side, and flat on the other). These designs are then made into necklaces, earrings and pins.Using the Netting Technique, Brick Stitch, and Peyote Stitch, beads are sewn together with needle and thread into lacy designs, or to encase a cabochon, or fringed pouch amulets, or fringed tube-style necklaces.Last is a chapter on using a loom to weave beads into amulets and earrings.

Everything in this book is beautiful and classy, but will appeal to a certain taste. To me they suggest a Native American look.I envision seeing such pieces sold in boutiques at fairly high prices, being that they require closely detailed work and a lot of time.

The instructions are clearly explained and illustrated, and are necessarily very detailed. One needs to be prepared to take the time to follow them closely. However, there is an assumption that you already are familiar with regular jewelry finishing techniques, such as how to end with crimps and clasps. The typical instructions for finishing only say something like: "String a crimping bead....close the crimping bead with crimping pliers and trim off the excess tiger tail" or "use round-nose pliers to make a loop in the head pin.Attach ear wires."

I think this is an excellent book for those with patience and a taste for this kind of look.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed
I was extremely disappointed with this book.I was expecting patterns that were more up to date with the times and jewelry that I could wear to work and out to dinner. These patterns weren't difficult to understand but like I said, who would want to wear it out of the house.Possibly little children would wearwhile playing house or something.Extremely disappointed.Don't waste your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beading banquet.
I'm on my third copy of this book.I've worn one out, loaned one to my daughter and, in order to keep one in hand, am ordering a back-up copy.Basic techniques, simple projects, excellent illustrations and step-by-step instructions in netting, peyote, loom and split loom, and techniques for beading around and incorporating cabouchons into the work are all here.Best of all, every project leads into innovation and creativity for the reader. For me, he simple peyote project has evolved into true life colored butterflies in beads.I heartily recommend this book to beginners and those who know the basics but want to jump ahead into creating their own designs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Book
I had to smile as I read some of the other reviews - which way is south?come on!How do you read a map?No, this book utilizes some good, sound language in its instructions like using terms such as north, south, east, west. The projects are quite beautiful. However, there are a few places where there does seem to be a bit of a gap or jump in the instructions.I'm an intermediate beader, and I can usually figure these things out,but the thing is we shouldn't have to that.Still, overall, this is a fairly good book if you're looking for something on RAW.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing -- This stitch needs a good guide
Unfortunately, this is a very poor introduction to a difficult but worthwhile stitch. I was tempted to give it two stars out of five because the project designs are mostly quite good (if you can figure them out): in fact the triangular RAW bangle is now one of my favourite patterns. But the frustration I felt while working out how to read the poorly conceived diagrams and obscure written instructions almost led me to toss this book against a wall (and I respect all books too much to do that often!) Beginners, stay away -- instead, buy Bead and Button magazine's 2008 special issue titled _Beading Basics: Right Angle Weave_, or Carol Cypher's Mastering Beadwork: A Comprehensive Guide to Off-loom Techniques. Better still, learn from a tutor and practice a lot. Then you may be able to overcome this book's serious flaws and enjoy what it has to offer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Way Different
This author does more with the right angle weave stitch than what you usually see in bead magazines or older crafts booklets. The photo showing some of the multiple-bead ladder variations on this stitch was a nice surprise, plus the beautiful "jabot" patterns that use some of these stitches. The chapters on cubes, tablets, and frames are unlike anything I've seen anywhere else. There are a lot of ideas here for further exploration. And it is the only book that actually tells you how to use two needles to do this stitch.

But, as another reviewer has pointed out, there are some artwork and editing issues.Sometimes cryptic instructions, illustrations out of sync with the text...And the artwork is certainly less helpful than it could be.I've gotten other patterns from this author off the Internet, so I happen to know that she uses PowerPoint for her diagrams. But apparently the publisher decided these were too techy-looking, and had an artist re-do them as hand-drawn sketches. But in screaming yellow and magenta? What's up with that? The section that another reviewer pointed out is a prime example of this collision of haphazard editing and an artist who evidently didn't bother to read the text she was illustrating.Yikes! However, seeing as how I could recognize these mistakes when I tripped over them, obviously the sketchy editing and artwork - while annoying - didn't prevent me from figuring out what was supposed to be going on.

I have to give the author credit for a clever solution to the problem of writing patterns for right angle weave, a stitch that can be done by two completely different methods.Rather than do duplicate instructions for every project - one with a single needle thread path, and another with two-needle paths - she labels the positions of the beads in each stitch instead: North, South, East, and West.So it doesn't matter whether you work a pattern using one needle or two, you just have to note what position the beads in each stitch lie in instead of following a thread path. The section titled "Read This First" describes this method of reading a pattern. However, it's so different from what you usually see in bead magazines that I can see how readers who skipped this section and went right into the projects might have run into trouble. It does take some thought and getting used to.I had to draw myself a little cross-shape with the arms labeled "East=Right" and "West=Left."But now that I get it, I find it a really helpful way of looking at other right angle weave patterns.

So I give this author high marks for innovative thinking and fun designs and techniques (love the layered frames and sugar cubes!), but knock off a point for the mangled editing and artwork that make getting through the instructions harder than it should be.If you're a beader looking for a challenge or something different, you'll like this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beading with RAW by C.M. Prussing
Probably a problem of buying online as opposed to brick & morter where you can see any color defficiencies...
Pages 16 thru 18 , although writtenwell the color for the how to instructions were faded or just not there...it was a huge guessing game and a test of nerves...without thebasic needle methods it's just a book with a lot of pretty pictures that the reader can't make...
In addition to add to the confusion if you do finally get the colors right, with the aid of colored pencils, there is another huge mistake on page 17 under SINGLE NEEDLE COUNTERCLOCKWISE START Step 1, it should read String 1 green, 1 orange 1 PINK and 1Yellow....

I will never buy another how to book on line....It turned out to be a very frustrating experience and not worth the $$$$

I guess if I already knew the basics ( acording to this author )that wereso confusing , I would have given it a higher score. I cannnot say that there are no more mistakes as I havenot made much progress...and I am no stranger to the RAW....I have been beading for many years.

I also feel it is not the author at fault but the publisher and the proofreader.

I hope this helps save future beaders the time, grief and aggravation .

1-0 out of 5 stars Which way is South?

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Book For Me
This was just what I was looking for to master the bead crochet. I saw Bethany demonstrate on the beadsbaublesandjewels program. She was easy to understand. There are many books to pick from out there, and I found this to be a nice addition to my reference book collection. If it's not for you, then just keep looking. I think this book is very worthwhile ... the results are gorgeous. I recommend it to folks who also like to crochet.

2-0 out of 5 stars a certain level of competence in the medium is assumed
I, unlike several other reviewers, really liked the look of the designs and the projects included in the book. However, I do agree that the instructions were overly simplified and not nearly informative enough to be a "how to" book.
I've been soldiering through some of the projects, and I'm now back at Amazon looking for a better book to help me continue on.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for
I guess I was not familiar with the term "bead crochet", but this book is not what I wanted.I was looking for books like "Crochet with Wire"
By: Nancie M. Wisemanand "Crochet Jewelry" By: Sophie Britten.

This book covers Tubular crochet, and crochet that the beading looks more like Pave-studded fabric. Most of the projects look like somebody just tangled a hodge podge of beads together. Not one of the projects appeals to me--they all look very 'hippie' and outdated.

I wish I had read the reviews more carefully before I bought this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Thankfully, I didn't buy it
Luckily, my small library has an interlibrary loan system.I've been searching for a good book about crocheting with beads.I must agree with another reviewer that the best part was the pictures of the antique pieces.

How totally dissapointing! The author tells us how to make things in her style and her style only, which is what I call a "funky mess".

I don't care whether I like the style or not.I had figured since it was called "A Beadwork How-To Book" that we'd learn basic techniques, but they are lost in the author's "creativity".

Unless you love the look of messy, funky stuff and want to COPY this, I cannot recommend this book at all.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disapponted in this book
I bought this book to learn how to bead crochet. Well, forget it, the directions are so spotty that I cannot imagine anyone being able to follow them. It amazes me that Ms. Barry is a teacher since she is incapable of explaining anything. Also found her designs really ugly and wouldn't want to duplicate them anyway. Buy Linda Lehman's book instead, it's really good. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A Huge Disappointment
If you are a quilter looking for applique patterns, please, do not waste your money on this book. The "patterns" are nothing more than clip art type pictures that the author admits she got from coloring books. The user is expected to copy and enlarge an 8" picture until it is usable for a 40" piece and then seperate the picture into usable parts. Some pictures are too detailed for applique and she tells you they must be simplified. 4-0 out of 5 stars Extreme beadwork
As it is titled, the book shows a lot of complex beadwork, most being labor intensive designs. Many of the designs are visually interesting, but some of them just strike me as being over the top.

4-0 out of 5 stars Techniques and problem solving
Important:this is not a design book. You will be disappointed if you want yet another book of beaded amulet bag patterns.

However, if you have moved away from amulet bags and need help in working out problems on your own designs, this is the book to have. It covers beadweaving (off- and on-loom), wire work, soldering, tambour stitching, knitting and crocheting with beads, and a lot of use-it-right-now information on bead sizes, threads, cleaning, stone hardness, metals, and glues.

The shortcoming of the book is that it may be too broad in scope and not deep enough in detail. But that can be an advantage: if you are struggling with a technique, you can learn enough from this book to know what to do next, whether learn a different tecnique, go to a specialist book, or take a class. That's a hugely valuable tool to have. It saves money and time. And for professional beaders, that's a big plus. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Beading on a loom
The color is wonderful. The gentleman who copied a picture into bead work was amazing. The history given about Native Americans and beading and how their craft was done showed how it is one of the backbones of American bead work was interesting and set the stage for any serious beader. There was a small section on making a loom which was not complete. It didn't explain all of the terms on the parts needed in loom making. The patterns were limited. There were color pictures of the work of others, but none of the historical work. Little attention was paid to the types and sizes of beads for the different types of looms. I expected more regarding making a loom and more simplistic patterns. What was in the book was very involved. This is a great "coffee table book", except too small, it is a nice treasure in a beading collection. I'm not so sure how helpful it is for someone who has never done loom beading. I don't believe it would encourage anyone who is not experianced in this phase of beading to try it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beadweaving on a Loom
Although I have not applied the how to, it is just what I was looking for.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice eye candy, but no patterns. Save your money.
Sometimes one can judge a book by its cover and get a good idea of the contents. Sometimes the cover is deceiving eye candy but there's precious little by way of content. That's what this book is: eye candy alone.

The how-to instructions inside are so basic that any brand new novice has mastered them in 10 minutes. These instructions can be found in any beading book or free doing a Google search.

This book is largely an exercise in ego: bragging rights by the author and, moreover, 90% of his designs are identical save for the color and type of bead used - identical pattern and execution of design.

There's a reason this title has so many 'used' books for sale, and that is due to the above mentioned areas.

So save your money and borrow it from a library, and use your money to buy some beading books that are going to give the bead artist something to go on. I am really disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need for inspiration
I am so pleased with the projects in this book.
Most of them are for intermediate to advanced beaders, but with a little practice, all could be achieved by beginning loomers.
The gallery portion is incredible and gives your creative side a shot in the arm!
A "must have".

4-0 out of 5 stars A journey into bead weaving
Don Pierce has a great sense of humour which echoes my own, therefore I found his book both amusing and informative, while I sat and read through all of his anecdotes and simple intructions. He not only simplifies the set up of a loom but also provides instructions for making one. I also found his charts at the back of the book invaluable for the planning of my first real project. Product Description
112 pages, illustrated with color photographs. Paperback. Shrink-wrapped.

A study of Zulu beadwork by perhaps the greatest living expert on the subject.

Most of the studies of African art available in this country have been written by outsiders. And, while these accounts can be informative, there is a level of understanding that only an insider can provide. For this reason, Africa Direct is proud to present Zulu Beadwork: Talk with Beads. Its author, Hlengiwe Dube, is a Zulu woman raised in a traditional family. Her relationship with Zulu beadwork is direct and personal, much of it drawn from her own experience or stories passed down by her mother and grandmother. In Zulu Beadwork: Talk with Beads, she makes her expertise available to readers everywhere.

In an engaging, conversational style, Dube talks about the unspoken words of traditional beadwork designs. Each color of bead, and each combination of colors, creates a different message. From the white beads that assure a lover, Whenever I see you my heart goes white as the milk of cattle when they are milked in the morning, to the green beads that proclaim, I am going to wait for my husband as he works in Johannesburg, Dube leads us through the fascinating complexities of beadwork messages.

Illustrated throughout with beautiful color photographs and including chapters on historical and regional trends, Zulu Beadwork: Talk with Beads is a must-read for anyone interested in learning about African art from the people who create it. ... Read more

A great book but only if you own no others on bead or ribbon work. This is NOT new material. It's a compilation of projects from numerous other books by a variety of artists/authors.I truly hate it when publishers do this, especially as there is no indication that this is merely a rehash and not new stuff. ... Product Description
A much-admired folk art, beadwork decorates items of personal adornment as well as ceremonial and everyday objects. Native American artists are among the craft's most skilled practitioners, and this study, offers a well-illustrated look at baskets and bowls, necklaces, robes, cradles, and other objects, all richly embellished in beads made from gold and precious stones, shells, bone, and other materials. In addition to over 30 black-and-white photos, numerous line figures depict the techniques used in their creation. Unabridged republication of Beads and Beadwork of the American Indians, originally published by Lancaster Press, Inc., Lancaster, Pennsylvania, 1929. Introduction. 31 halftones. 136 figures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seminal work on beading technique
Native American Beadwork is a reprint of Orchard's Native American beadwork technique book published in the early 20th century. It was one of the first books examining beadwork techniques in detail and is still one of the best.Orchard was a Native American museum curator, as was his son - this book is written from a base of authoritative knowledge and original investigative work. Many of the techniques were actually reconstructed from either disassembling or thread-tracing artifacts.

I particularly like the coverage of woven beadwork. This is not your typical block or peyote stitch bead book, nor is it a project book.It is a an examination of Native American and trade beads, historical bead production techniques, and beading techniques. Most of the photos and all of the illustrations are in black & white, which is to be expected from a book dating from this period. The first 85 pages of the book cover bead history.Coverage of techniques is on pages 86 to 129 - all of which is descriptive and not instructional per se.

This is not a photographic reprint.Rather, it is a full recreation of the original book. The text was re-entered, the photographs re-scanned, and the color plates were produced with modern techniques. Some of the color plates were re-shot using the original artifacts as the original plates could not be located. As a result, the quality is superb.

This is a must-have book for anyone interested in Native American beading. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Collectible Beads
This book is a beautiful document for the ones who create jewellery or collect beads. It is beautifully illustrated and studies the major cultural and geografical regions and their bead production.

It includes photos of contemporary necklaces and artist-made beads, fakes and simulations.

I thoroughly recommend this excellent book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Collecting old beads
This book has a lot of great photos and general information. However, in trying to date old trade beads it is often lacking dates and is unclear to the novice on how to recognize fake vs real. It's still a nice book to have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Collectible Beads: A Universal Aesthetic
This book is really great, I enjoy each page of it. It is informative, and contents breathtaking photos. I love beads and want to learn more about my hobby, this book is a great resource, for interested people like me, jewelry making persons and the collector. I would buy it again. Together with "The History of Beads" I have a complete guide and learned a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any bead collector!
A wonderful and very desciptive history of beads. Excellent quality photos, this book can used to help the novice or the serious bead collector.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent photos, difficult reading
Although the photos of beads are excellent, I found this book far too much like a PhD dissertation, with the feel of a synthesis, having substance but written in a format which was difficult to read. Bibliographic references imbedded in the text just add to the unreadable style. The text is painfully lacking in the kind of information I appreciate, such as dating, geography, and clear references to the individual beads presented in the photos. And references to values of beads in dollars has no relevant meaning unless there is a time reference. As a reference book I would rate it of minimal worth. As a coffee table amusement it is acceptable, but would need far more photos to make it useful for that purpose. ... Read more

Product Description
A new wire weaving technique that varies the number of wires and their thickness to create stunningly beautiful bracelets, necklaces, and pendants is introduced in this guide. Project instructions go well beyond simple line drawings to show the assembly process of each piece in a series of step-by-step photographs. The nine projects begin with an elegantly simple woven bracelet and move on to more dramatic projects that include a domed cuff bracelet with soldered bead ends, a free-form bracelet, a woven neck piece, and a pendant with a woven frame. Projects range in difficulty from easy to advanced, and many can be completed without soldering. The more experienced craftsperson will savor the way Precious Metal Clay adds striking embellishments to three of the projects. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration and a Visual Delight
I am an avid beadier and I found this book to be full of delightful projects. It had a variety of techniques and designs that I have never thought possible. I have literally spent hours looking at this book and plan on getting others from the "500" series. I would highly recommend this book to other bead workers and to people who enjoy viewing art.

5-0 out of 5 stars Feast for the eyes
this is one of my favorite books ever. It is a feast for the eyes to view the fabulous bead work shown in this book. Highly recommend!

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
I just got the book and I cannot put it down.I wish I had found it earlier, but now that I have it, it is one of my all time favorite!! I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes beads!!Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is not a luxury item
I renewed the library's copy of 500 Beaded Objects so often that my library card was getting friction burns. I'm very fussy about what I add to my collection of beading reference but this was an absolute "must." We all hit times when the Muse doesn't talk to us and that's just when you should pull this book out. No matter what your skill level is, the fabulous and varied work in this book will inspire you to try different techniques, push yourself, and think outside the box. It's an absolute jewel of a book and I couldn't be without it.
If you need help with technique, this is not the item - but there are many other fine books to assist you there. This is the book that will uplift you when the thread tangles, the beads scatter on the floor and your shoulders have gone into permanent hunch mode from beading for too many hours.

5-0 out of 5 stars Omigosh!
This is the most amazing book for anyone who is fascinated with beads, whether you actually work with them or not!I actually spent 2 1/2 days studying every entry --- my husband thought I was nuts, until I reminded him of the amount of time he spends with new Jeep magazines each month!Anyway, this book is worth any amount of money and is the only bead book of all that I have that sits on my coffee table. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars worth it for one pattern
this book has patterns for beaded fringe, straps and chains. There are a couple of useful patterns, the best one being Diane Fitzgerald's "Caduceus" chain, aka figure 8 chain.A lot of the other patterns are VERY basic. If you've been beading for a while then you probably already know most of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Customer Review of Booklet ("Beaded Cords, etc.")
This booklet about beading is clearly and well written; the author provides detailed instructions and good pictures. It was easy to imagine different colors/bead sizes, and my imagination has certainly been given a workout.

4-0 out of 5 stars Linear Thinking
If you have an item that needs a handle to hold it, the pattern is in this book.If it is not, then with imagination, the starting point is in this book.If the item is weighty, a macrame strap may be the answer.Do you need leashes for your glasses? There are several patterns that will suffice. There are loomed and off loom straps as well as one that is made with a spool-knitter.If you have never beaded before, some of the straps require practice before starting, but many are able to be compleated on the first try.The diagrams could have been clearer, but they will suffice. All one needs is a bead supplier for the seed beads and thread and you're ready to give it a go. ...
