I purchased this book in order to get additional information on captive care for my frilled dragon. This book may be valuable for the scientific community but it has VERY little information on raising frilled dragons in captivity. In fact, since the book is translated from German, the book refers the reader to another book for captive care but it is also in German. ... Read more

Excerpt:Bearded dragons , agamid lizards of the genus Pogona , are often kept as pets , most commonly Pogona vitticeps , the Inland or Central Bearded Dragon. Pogona describes seven species naturally found in arid, semi-arid woodlands and rocky deserts in central Australia. They are a popular species among children, because of their friendly and calm nature, along with the relative ease of caring for them. Most bearded dragons kept as pets have broad triangular heads and flattened bodies, with adults reaching approximately 16 to 22 inches (410 to 560 mm) from head to tail and weighing 350 to 600 grams (10 to 20 oz). Sexual dimorphism Males have a distinct set of pre-anal pores between the back legs and have hemipenal bulges at the vent area. Females usually have no buldge past the vent or only one. Contrary to some beliefs, they do have pores, however they are less noticeable than a male's. The pores are easy to see by looking at the dragon's underside. Males and females are of comparable size, although males usually sport a larger head and a thicker tail base than the females. However, this is not always true. There are cases where a female has a bigger head and tail then her male counterpart. Mature males will turn their throat pouches (Beards) black during courtship to signal dominance, although females have also been known to do the same. Diet Bearded Dragon eating Dandelion leaves. 5-0 out of 5 stars Response to "A Reader From Sweden"
what do you expect...this book was written by a man who breeds bearded dragons and it is a book about bearded dragons. It is a wonderful book and tells you everything you need to know about keeping a bearded dragon whether you are breeding them or not.I personally own a 1 year old dragon, and this has been like the bible to me.Whenever something is wrong i consult this book and it will always have the answer you need. All the other books are written by herpotologists who have never actually owned, bred, or loved a bearded dragon. This book is amazingly helpful and comes from a person who knows what he is doing.I would recommend it to anyone who is planning on owning and loving a bearded dragon.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a very useful book
I don't like this book at all, the authors only writes about keeping the bearded dragons in big outdoor vivariums, and not about having just 1-3 bearded dragons as pets.

Very little information about feeding, housing and everything you really want to know. The authors also doesn't seem to think about the bearded dragons as pets, to cuddle with and have fun with, but only as something you can breed.

I almonst never read or look in this book, and I regret that I bought it.

I rekommend Liz Palikas book "Your Bearded Dragon's Life" and the book "The guide to a owning a BD" by David Zoffer and Tom Mazorlig instead!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is a very through book on the care and maintenance of Bearded Dragons. It is excellent for the beginer lizard keeper. I highly recommend this book if you want to take good care of your Bearded Dragon(s).It contains information on their diet, vivarium design, and other very useful information. It is one of the most reliable reptile books I have read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I got this book when I was considering getting a bearded dragon. It's a good book but not my favorite one that I found.I've had my bearded dragon for 6 years now and she is a wonderful pet.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Information Source
I find it hard to believe that the Author has ever owned a Bearded Dragon. If he did or does he never spent any time observing them. This author gives contrary information to just about every other source out there. This book would be better titled "How to care for your short lived dragon"

4-0 out of 5 stars To the reader in British Columbia
Bearded Dragons RETAIN SPERM. So, they almost ALWAYS multi-clutch...you CANNOT control or limit the number of clutches to 1 a year.Matter of fact, 3 is about average from a single mating session, and if housed together all year, female beardies can have up to 7 or even 9 clutches. (Best to house the male seperately to control the breeding to the extent possible.) I suggest you re-read the book, and if it doesn't have this information, that you throw it out and get The General Care and Maintenance of Bearded Dragons by Vosjoli and Mailloux.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have 4 Beardie Buddies
This handy HardBack gives a complete and quick reference guide to the most important information needed about keeping a Bearded Dragon for a Pet.Most people prefer this format, like a midsized coffee-table type book, with lots and lots of very well done and attractive pictures on every single page to accompany a more personalized format of relating a wealth of very, important information. Not just what to do, but how, why, and how important it is.Younger folk, curious friends and others will pick this book up near the tank, and easily find out for themselves things they might be wondering about or never thought to ask. "The Bearded Dragon Manual," a suggested companion book, is more like a medical/technical reference guide, necessary with more detailed information, but will keep on the shelf. as your "go to" in times of trouble. This HardBack book by Tom Mazorlig, "Bearded Dragon (Success with a Reptile Pet)", is the one you will keep right out front to show your friends, and everybody else, or use for the kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for starters
I would recommend this book to anyone new to beardies, easy read with lots of good info. There are other books out there with more info, but this will give you all you need to know to get started.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners!
This book is great for beginners just starting out with keeping beardies. Well-illustrated with many beautiful photographs. Easy to understand and covers the basics of each aspect of keeping dragons.Fantastic and detailed info on feeding. This book is a great companion for the other book I purchased called "The Bearded Dragon Manual" by Philippe De Vosjoli.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bearded Dragon was a great book
This book offers lots of info on the care, health, and maintenence of bearded dragons. Also, it is a very specific guide for feeding, tank setup, breeding, incubator setup, and raising hatchlings. This book also points out the behavioural characteristics of bearded dragons and what they are "saying" to you or another bearded dragon.I found the courtship section to be most helpful when my boyfriend and I wanted to see if our beardies would co-habitate in a friendly manner. This book has photographs of different color phases of bearded dragons, and would make a great coffee table book.

I ordered this book blind, as I cannot reference English language books where I live.I was hoping for more information on breeding results and genetics, but this book really focuses on the basics. In this respect a very useful and to be recommended book, but not outstanding IMO.Coming from the 'Professional Breeders Series' one would expect a bit more depth, such as colour genetics, recessive/dominant inheritance, etc.Still, for someone just starting out and needing the basics, I would put this as a best bet.Good overview on illnesses and their treatment, as well as general husbandry.

3-0 out of 5 stars excellent material but kinda skinny
The book was very helpful for an entry Bearded Dragon owner and the authors are clearly knowledgeable. The pictures are both informative and amusing, not to mention of high quality. My only fault to this book is the price tag as compared to its thickness. I expected a lot more book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Short overview
This book is by no means complete. It gives a very brief overview of the animal and where it came from.It didn't really include anything about how to properly care for the dragon.

1-0 out of 5 stars very disappointed
This book had no information about what to feed bearded dragons. It was not specific. Just said vegetables. Did not say what kind, how much. It had no information about the proper habitat. I would not recommend this book to anyone. It was not very informative. I would appreciate a refund.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative and easy to read care guide for Bearded Dragons
The book was easy to read and concise. It offered the information one needs to maintain these animals and keep them healthy, without launching into the seemingly mandatory 45 page narrative about the state of the global ecology and what you or I can do to help. I have seen the infomercials,... I don't need to get lectured in a book which I paid for.

The information seems in line with all the other literature I have collected on these animals,... however to be frank the majority of information contained is also readily available for free on the internet. Having said that, the author does go beyond the precursory information one finds online to further explain the ins and outs. It is nice to get the "how and why" as well.

This should be the only source a beginner will need to properly set up a habitat for, maintain, and breed bearded dragons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bearded Dragon: Facts & Advice on Care and Breeding
This is a wonderful book for anyone who has recently acquired or are thinking of acquiring a bearded dragon.Whatever your questions are...this book has the answers.I recommend that this be the first book you purchase. ... Read more
