The Treadwell maze
Mike Lapinski's "Death in the Grizzly Maze" is a book about the self-proclaimed eco-warrior Timothy Treadwell, who perhaps doesn't need a closer introduction.

Treadwell lived around brown bears in Katmai (a national park in Alaska) for thirteen seasons in a row, somehow getting the wild bears to tolerate his presence. He became a national celebrity in the United States, claiming to defend the bears from poachers and other threats. In 2003, tragedy struck: Treadwell and his companion Amie Huguenard were killed and eaten by brown bears as they were camping in an area Treadwell called the Grizzly Maze.

Who was Timothy Treadwell? What motivated him to socialize at close distance with dangerous and potentially lethal animals? Could the tragedy of his and Amie's deaths have been avoided, or was it inevitable? Werner Herzog's award-winning movie "Grizzly Man" gives one answer, a rather disturbing one: Treadwell was out of his mind, wanted to cross the line between man and beast, and inevitably failed. Herzog even believes that Treadwell was driven by a death wish. Lapinski's book hints at another answer, perhaps an even more disturbing one: Treadwell was a hoax, a con artist whose primary goal was fame and celebrity status. However, he also has an alternative explanation: the frequently erratic behaviour of Treadwell was caused by bipolar disorder.

Although Lapinski isn't a big fan of Tim Treadwell, he nevertheless has a grudging respect for the man. He never accuses him of being a con man outright. Yet, after reading "Death in the Grizzly Maze", I must say that I veer strongly towards that option. Too many of Treadwell's claims just don't ad up. He claimed to defend the brown bears at Katmai against poachers, and even formed an organization in California to finance his activities. In reality, there are no poachers in Katmai, a national park visited by thousands of tourists every year. Indeed, all of Treadwell's encounters were with tourist guides, tourists, park rangers and competing movie makers. Once, Treadwell even faked evidence for poaching! Treadwell claimed he was carrying out unique research, but his book "Among grizzlies" contains nothing new, except numerous errors or old information taken from works by others. Treadwell also habitually misinformed sponsors and supporters about his activities at Katmai.

But how did Timothy Treadwell manage to survive so long among wild bears? Lapinski believes that the bears at Katmai are, relatively speaking, more peaceful and tolerant of humans than bears in others parts of Alaska or the United States. The Katmai bears aren't even "real" grizzlies, but rather brown bears (the same species but a different population). If Treadwell had tried to socialize with bears in the Rockies or the Alaskan inland, he would have ended up dead much sooner! The author also points out that the Katmai bears are well fed during the summer season, which also lowers rates of aggression. By the time the bears started to starve, Treadwell was usually long gone, having returned to California.

What strikes me most when reading "Death in the Grizzly Maze" is the absurdity of it all. Why didn't park authorities stop Treadwell immediately? Why was he allowed to continue his bizarre antics for 13 years? Why didn't any of his sponsors or supporters call a bear biologist or the park authority to check Treadwell's facts? Why didn't the media question him? (A silly question, I know.)

"Death in the Grizzly Maze" doesn't just raise disturbing questions about Timothy Treadwell. It also raises questions about ourselves. And that maze might be even more impenetrable.

A great book, pragmatic but fair
Mike Lapinski, the author, is not that experienced in writing as he is in factual journalism, he's more of a sports writer, not trying to impress, only to inform.To me, this only adds to itscharm. I disagree with some others that he swings in the other direction from Nick Jans (The Grizzly Maze) whom they think was too soft on Tim. Mikegives honest accounts based on interviews--including Tim's and Amie's parents.The idea that Tim and his family were estranged is denied by Tim's parents. OK, Nick Jans' Grizzly Maze is more poetic and stylized as becomes a stylistic writer.But Mike Lapinski's roughhewn sports type journalism Jon Krakauer isn't "poetic," either); he's an unpretentious self-effacing journalist whose style is like Jon K's) and kept me interested. He devoted a whole chapter to Amie Huguenard, the other victim, who --as he laments, has been all but forgotten except that she was also killed that day. She was tough, intelligent, selfless but trusted Tim too much and therefore died. She could've probably used bear spray, I thought she did, from a passage in the book.

The author give Tim a lot of credit when it is due and criticizes him when he deserved it. By opining that these deaths could have been prevented and that Tim might be bipolar (before it was diagnosed) was brought up by Tim's mom, and it isn't swinging in the other direction. In fact, he gives the dude credit for his courage and the fact that he lasted almost 13 years out thre in the Grizzly maze.After seeing the movie Grizzly Man and watching Tim's histrionics and annoying habit of repeating himself three times ("I would DIE for them" "it's what I'm SAYIN'") three times, cursing the sky and the gods including "that HIndu god" (which one? there are thousands!) until it finally rained, then he turned around and apologized and praised them all! At any rate, Mike is right on in interviewing Tim's counselor who had advised Tim several times to quit what he was doing or he'd get himself killed. But Mike isn't nasty or cruel in his critique, only very honest, and gives excerpts from interviews with people who knew Tim, and swung both ways in their opinions.I rate this one 5 stars because of the rough-hewn honesty of Mike. Both Mike's and Nick Jans' books are great, serve their purpose and, like Rocky and Adrian, "fill gaps." But I prefer the more selfless and no-nonsense, on-task journalism reporting of Mike Lapinski.

A well-balanced book on a volatile subject
I'm very glad I wasn't dissuaded by some of the negative reviews of Lapinski's book on this site. I found it to be a valuable book on the bizarre, and strangely volatile, subject of Timothy Treadwell's death. Lapinski's is a calm, well-researched, and reasonable approach that balances Jans's (The Grizzly Maze: Timothy Treadwell's Fatal Obsession with Alaskan Bears) somewhat flashier style nicely.There are contradictions of fact and conjecture between these two excellent authors, but the two agree on the most important facts: that Treadwell endangered himself, his girlfriend, and his beloved bears by his risky actions, and that his claims of poaching at Katmai preserve were simply not true. Also, Lapinski's book provides valuable additional information about Amie Huguenard for those of us trying to form a comprehensive picture of these preventable deaths.

Rip-off?
This book seems like it was hastily cobbled together after reading Nick Jan's article of the same name. Jans did an amazing amount of research, visited the site three days after the deaths of Treadwell and his girlfriend, and personally interviewed the key investigative figures. Read GRIZZLY MAZE. Jans' writing reaches literary quality--it is concise and powerful.

What a disappointment
This book gets one star for its few photos depicting the bears and Treadwell; otherwise it is, without exception, a terrible read.The author is clearly biased in his painfully inept attempt to document the life, and death of Treadwell as he lived among the bears. The insideous message conveyed throughout the book (though the word insideous perhaps suggests that the author artfully IMPLIES his thesis rather PANIFULLY OVERSTATE)is that Treadwell acted foolishly among the bears and so died as a result of his actions....unfortunately it takes the author 165 pages to do so over and over and over again. Especially disconcerting is the author's gratuitous reconstruction of what actually happened during the attack (creative writing 101 perhaps). Interesting how the author is set upon a mission to ferret out the truth of the Treadwell story, yet fabricates Treadwell's demise all the way down to the huffing of the bears and a dramatic imaginative fight scene that he almost appears to enjoy writing. I would have prefered a more even-handed telling of Treadwell's story, not the knee-jerk anti-Treadwell reaction this book appears to be. Absolutely horrible read. ... Read more

Disappointed.
found this book very opinionated, lacking in facts.The authors are incredibly egotistical knocking any efforts to conserve the Grizzly except their own. They contradict themselves several times and throughout the book they are happy to mention the names of not only people they agree with but also the names of people and organizations that are not doing what they think needs to be done.A very terrible book.

The book treats the grizzly as the great animals they are - neither teddy bearish or monster.The book generates respect for this amazing animal.

The Nonessential Book
The Peacocks bring together some interesting stories in a way I've not seen done before, but their cockamamie, insular "logic" lies somewhere between intellectual dishonesty and sloth, which, for the critical thinker, makes the pages hard to get through. It's too bad; I'd hoped for so much more. Still, worth a skim if you love the bears and where they live.

Call of the Great Spirit
Great Book.I read this book after I met Bobby.I have already read Native Healer and Spirits of the Earth.This book contains more of his experiences and the point in his life when he felt he could not go on and attempted the unthinkable, "suicide".Luckily for Bobby and for all who know him know, he did not succeed but instead became a great healer and spiritual teacher.

Hard to believe
I gave the author the benefit of the doubt for most of the book, but when he claimed to have seen bigfoot, it makes the rest of the story hard to believe. Seems more like a charlatan to me.

A magical experience to read and learn from Grandfather Grizzlybear!
This is one of the most important books I have ever read and experienced in my lifetime. I really appreciate been able to read and actually meet Bobby lake thom in person. He is a wonderful teacher and healer. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about spiritual development and learning about the spirits that inhabit our mother earth. It is an autobiography into a magical and real world of healing and getting in touch with our relations in nature. I want to personally thank bobby again for such a great book. If I could I would give this book 10 stars instead of just five!

Speechless, Humbled & Grateful

Now in its second printing, with correction of a couple earlier errors,the Field Guide to the Grizzly Bear covers 500,000 years of this species'existence in just 48 pages. As the author, I can appreciate how difficultit is to write about so much in so few words. The field guide series bySasquatch had already set excellent precedents in earlier works on the orcaand bald eagle by the time I agreed to compose a guide to the grizzly. Thebasic requirement is to get it down briefly, and to get it right.I thinkit works very well as a brief introduction to the history, natural history,troubled present and risky future for one of nature's greatcreations.

Fine photos
Combined with tales of encounters with wildlife. The author a bear management ranger for the park services has put together a rewarding book. Staying out of trouble doing this work is the first requirement. Beautiful pictures varte a bonus. Good source before you gvo into the wild.

Kennan Ward is a wonderful, dedicated outdoor photographer.
During a recent trip to Alaska where I was photographing Grizzly bears, I wanted to acquire a book or two that would be good representations of professional bear photography.I looked at many (and there are many goodones).Of the outstanding books I previewed, none were more professionaland complete than Ward's.He is the consummate naturalist, always gettinghis pictures, but never to the detriment of the animal.He has manyinteresting stories to tell, and he tells them well.The cover photois fantastic, and it is rivaled by many more inside the book.I havelooked through this book several times since I returned from my trip, andit is a fine reminder of the Great Land... and a great animal.Thank youMr. Ward.

the book
an increadible glimpse into what i consider the most striking man of that historical time period.a man far removed from hunting laws , political correctness, peta,animal rights,etc. he did alot of killing of creatures, but cared and even loved these animals more than the "animal lovers" of today could ever profess themselves to be. he was a believer in the creator as a sovereign, and understood gods appointment to man over the animal kingdom. he was a man of what seems to be at times reckless courage and bravery in the face of grave danger, to the point the indians in the area were in awe of him.they called him the "great white hunter", but he would down play that title and just call his skill "common sense". his ability to traverse hundred of miles of mountian ranges and deserts,with not only himself to take care of but the careful watch over his animals and the other men with him make an incridible read. lewis and clark are lucky adams came after them. quite a man indeed. ive read this book many times and it still delivers exciting reading.every hunter since adams should read this book and feel very still if they are honest.----t.p.s. ... A Wonderful Book
Upon first opening this book, one is hit by a wonderful introduction which creates a promising beginning for the book. Unlike many books dealing with bears, this book contains good information and wonderful pictures thatdazzle the eye. The ending brings all but the strong hearted to tears, asfive years with Little Stony is ended abruptly. For anyone interested inletting their child read a good book about grizzly bears, with bothpictures and excellent informational content, this would be the best one.The reader watches the bear grow from just a tiny cub to a large adult withthe pictures allowing one to see the stages of development in a naturalsetting. Rick McIntyre weaves a breath taking story with his written words,letting the reader feel what Rick was feeling when those words werewritten. This book has truly made me interested in bears, visitingYellowstone National Park and waiting silently at dawn in hopes that a bearwould be spotted on one of the hillsides. Usually, my efforts pay off. Thisbook makes one feel as if Little Stony and his mother were standing rightin front of them, so detailed is the story and the pictures. A highlyrecommend book for anyone interested in seeing good pictures of grizzlybears in the wild and having good writing to accompany it. Buy this booknow and I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Misleading Title
This is not a book about bears, this is a book about the authors, their problems and emotions--and about Mr. Russell's plane... What they have to say about the bears they set free would barely fill one chapter in all.
If you really want to know what it's like to raise orphan cubs in the wild, if you want to know about bear behavior, bear biology, and how to teach people to coexist peacefully with bears, read Benjamin Kilham's book "Among the Bears".
