4-0 out of 5 stars Netherlands - Culture Smart
This is a good book for finding out generalities about Dutch culture and customs. The book is written more particularly from a British perspective--and the author seems a bit uncomfortable with some of her subject matter, such as sexuality.Howeer, it is informative and interesting and easy to read through. There is some very good information and some good details and anecdotes, as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing little book.
This is an amazing little book; wish I had purchased it earlier. It is factual, interesting, and a quick read.It is especially helpful for those who are going to travel in the Netherlands, but also a good book for those who want to know more about where they may have already traveled.Great little reference. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Satisfied
I am extremely satisfied with this seller and the product I received. I will definitely be buying more items from this seller in the future. I received my item very swiftly after purchasing it at Amazon.com.

5-0 out of 5 stars fun and informative guide
Having just returned from the Netherlands, we found this book to be very helpful and also an icebreaker with new Dutch friends, who thought some of the observations about their national character and customs were spot-on while others were amusing. Also, citizens were surprised that I knew a fair bit of history as well as more contemporary information about national politics etc. This was a handy guide to the basics of functioning in this wonderful country.I would recommend this to travellers.Very handy.

5-0 out of 5 stars most informative read
This book is clear and concise. The format makes it very easy to read from cover to cover or to select a couple of chapters. I have lived in the Netherlands for 10yrs and enjoyed it immensely. I have also sent the book to my relatives in the UK and they found it an enlightening read. I highly recommend it to anyone planning a stay in the Netherlands.

5-0 out of 5 stars smart buy
Of all the travel books about The Netherlands that I used in the 10 years of living there, this was the best. It was up-to-date, concise and informative. It makes a great gift for anyone planning a trip to the Netherlands and has useful information for locals and travellers alike. The size of the book makes for easy carring around.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very basic overview
I'm moving to the Netherlands next month. I bought this book as I had one from this series when I moved to Kuala Lumpur - that book was invaluable. This one hasn't the same kind of info I had hoped for. The information presented here is interesting and helpful, but not what I was looking for. I've ordered "The Holland Handbook" in hopes of finding the info I need.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not for the novice brewer, but a great referecne regardless.
Amazingly easily to read I assumed this was going to be a technical manual on how to brew sour beers. It is, but between the technical is the history of the regions these styles come from. If you are interested in brewing your own sour beers, or improving your process this is very valuable.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have
Absolute neccessity for the homebrewer looking to try their hand brewing tradtional Belgian-style beers.A wonderful book for anyone that simply appreciates Belgian-style beers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative
I hadn't brewed at all when I purchased this book, but I was very curious, with all the hoopla about sanitation and temperature control, how humans managed to brew anything for the last thousands of years without bleach and refrigeration and you name it. This book doesn't necessarily answer all of that, but it is incredibly informative about Belgium lambics and Flanders beers. This is a 'how it's done' book not a story-telling travel through the region tasting beers with colorful characters, nonetheless I found it fascinating! A little repetitive in places which didn't bother me since I knew so little about these beers and the means of creating them. And since the author appears to hail from the U.S. of A. he is familiar with and writes about commercial lambics on this side of the pond. I loved the section on barrels. And for those of us who want to give a lambic or a Flanders beer a go, there are a few recipes included. A nice, chunky bibliography is in the back.

4-0 out of 5 stars Recommended, especially for brewers
This book is so fascinating, I really found it to be quite a page turner. That said, Sparrow does get a bit technical and for someone who is not a brewer, it might not be very useful and even a bit confusing. Nonetheless, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in brewing, from amateurs to commercial brewers.

5-0 out of 5 stars nothing short of fantastic
I can't believe the amount of information in this book.It is so incredibly detailed, I can't believe that it didn't take a lifetime to accumulate this.this is a must have, not must read, for any brewer, home or pro, that is at all interested in beer with wild yeast.I got a little bored with the listing of breweries and what they do, etc.I can absolutely see how this would round out, what would otherwise be a reference or text book.I was simply looking for practical and well founded knowledge about brett, lacto, pedio, etc.THIS IS IT, take my word for it.I was simply blown away at several points during this read.As an example the author suggests that you could add brett, pedio and other cultured yeasts on a schedule that was based on their life cycles found in a spontaneously fermented lambic.Fantastic idea.I can't wait to try this. This book is packed full of useful, practical info on wild yeast.

This book has made me crave more info on the subject (although I don't at all expect anything to surpass or even rival the info in this book), and guess what, there isn't anything, not currently in print anyway.this is your book on wild yeast, accept no subsitutes. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Mostly ruined by bad and monotonous writing

First off, to get the obligatory introduction out of the way: Yes, I am a Dutchman myself. I have been living in Japan for the past 5 years, and I am glad to be away from a country that I have no particular fondness for.

I was amused by this book for maybe a chapter or two, but soon it started to irritate me and get on my nerves.
The problem is twofold:

1. The incessant tone of sarcasm throughout the entire book. Bashing on anything and everything that is even slightly out of the ordinary (even if it is something completely common in many countries outside of America), which becomes tiresome quite fast.

2. The overreliance on alliteration as if it were the highest form of Humor, or indeed any kind of humor at all. Sorry, but I grew out of that when I was 10.

The second point is just really lazy writing and is examplary of the writers' complete incompetence in the field of humor (seriously, this is some of the most low-brow humor I've ever read. The charicatures are ugly and unfunny as well).

The first point poses a significant problem. The constant exaggerations are of course a staple of "comedic writing" (used in the loosest sense of the phrase), but the problem is that, for people "not-in-the-know" as it were, it is hard to distinguish between what is exaggerated or supposed to be funny and what is actually true.

Unfortunately though, very little of it actually is true (anymore), since there are a lot of totally outdated customs and practices described in this book, and even then a lot of them are only restricted to very specific parts of the Netherlands.

Wade through the condescending remarks, puerile humor and infuriating writing-style, and occassionally you might find something that is astute, accurate and amusing all at the same time (I found that, in many cases, these are quotes/anecdotes by other people), it's just a shame that these moments are very few and far between.

5-0 out of 5 stars So true
This book is so true. If you are going to stay in Netherlands you should read it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Didn't Like It That Much
Maybe it's a generational thing but I was disappointed in the overly smark alecky approach of this book. It's also a little dated. That said, it IS tremendously informative if you can tolerate the excessive cutseyness and I did learn alot. However, I will be taking it along to my local book buyer because I don't want it and won't recommend it. I've just returned from my first visit so I've still got some very sweet feelings about the green heart of Holland and its wondrous history, courage, and 20 million tulips. Was in Amsterdam too, even for Queen's Day which was uproarious all around. This approach doesn't seem that humorous too me and I think if I were to live there, it might hurt my feelings. As I say, could be a generational thing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny and a little too accurate
You might read this book thinking the author is exaggerating like crazy, but he really isn't. The Dutch are some of the most lovable, laid-back, bike-obsessed, penny-pinching, tiny-house-dwelling people you will ever meet.

Everything is written in a semi-sarcastic manner, but its actually pretty accurate from my experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bloody funny!
I've owned a copy of this book since 1992, the year I left Holland to be an exchange student, though that was not the first time I was forced to see Holland through 'foreign' eyes. My late father was English, and he instilled in me the same critical view of the Netherlands that he had had all his life (that part spent in Holland, anyway). Critical, but also amused, bemused, bewildered, niggled, worried, and occasionally utterly gobsmacked. He would often express his wonder in the most hilarious deadpan, which is exactly what this book reminds me of. It is written in a hilarious style that will appeal to both sides of the American humor/British humour divide.

Although the authors are critical, there is not an ounce of ill-will or malice. The observations should make any Cloggie (clog-wearing Dutch person - geddit??) giggle with recognition. Even we Dutch know we can be pretty rude at times (though we usually refer to it as direct), and let's be honest, the Dutch do wear ridiculous shoes, and have a knack for consuming lashings of coffee during cigarette breaks. Not that that is all there is to it. What the authors do is what I would consider good-natured ribbing. At the same time, one can tell they have spent quite a bit of time there.

But I'm not going to give the game away. The book is hilarious, and if you are Dutch and you can laugh at yourself you will enjoy this all the more. If you see in this work an attack on the Dutch, then you've missed the point entirely.

So whether you are, or know a Dutchie who wants a different perspective or you're a confused tourist of the Lowlands, or you have an interest in Holland in general, do read this book. You may even turn into an Undutchable yourself. ... Read more

Product Description
In this creative study of history and popular culture, W. D. King ingeniously illustrates how a long-forgotten instance in theatre history can reveal the very process of historical change itself.Late in the nineteenth century, Henry Irving, the leading actor-manager of the English stage, was scathingly attacked by George Bernard Shaw for his popular performance in Conan Doyle's play, A Story of Waterloo. Shaw's review was one of the first onslaughts in a war against the old guard of the English stage, against Victorianism, against England and Empire itself. King's depiction of this event and its aftermath illuminates the period's crucial values and cultural issues, and is presented in a manner that is both convincing and highly entertaining. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An unusual look at (theatre) history
King's book deals with the performance of Arthur Conan Doyle's short play "A Story of Waterloo" by eminent Victorian actor Henry Irving and a devastating review of this production written by George Bernard Shaw in 1895. The play is about an old and feeble soldier who has played a heroic role at Waterloo and pathetically dies while reliving his finest hour, thereby bringing the house down (in the theatre, that is). King uses this intersection of two remarkable theatrical careers to consider the Victorians' retrospective glance at the Napoleontic wars, the nature of Irving's performance, which by modern standards would be inconceivably sentimental, Irving's relation to his audience, Shaw's development as a critic and playwright, Irving's leading lady Ellen Terry and her son, the theatre director, designer and Irving acolyte Edward Gordon Craig. An instructive and entertaining read for anyone with a broad interest in the theatre and (cultural) history. Highly accessible, but marred by some unnecessary excursions into academic obscurities that the opening chapters had led me to believe were going to be avoided. Still, fascinating stuff. ... Product Description
"Dr. Harris has preempted a field almost unto himself: the study of contemporary festivals that have their origins in tradition, history, and the great religious celebrations of the past. . . . [This book] represents a masterful achievement."--Milla Cozart Riggio, James J. Goodwin Professor of English, Trinity College, Hartford, ConnecticutWith a riotous mix of saints and devils, street theater and dancing, and music and fireworks, Christian festivals are some of the most lively and colorful spectacles that occur in Spain and its former European and American possessions. That these folk celebrations, with roots reaching back to medieval times, remain vibrant in the high-tech culture of the twenty-first century strongly suggests that they also provide an indispensable vehicle for expressing hopes, fears, and desires that people can articulate in no other way. In this book, Max Harris explores and develops principles for understanding the folk theology underlying patronal saints' day festivals, feasts of Corpus Christi, and Carnivals through a series of vivid, first-hand accounts of these festivities throughout Spain and in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Peru, Trinidad, Bolivia, and Belgium. Paying close attention to the signs encoded in folk performances, he finds in these festivals a folk theology of social justice that--however obscured by official rhetoric, by distracting theories of archaic origin, or by the performers' own need to mask their resistance to authority--is often in articulate and complex dialogue with the power structures that surround it. This discovery sheds important new light on the meanings of religious festivals celebrated from Belgium to Peru and on the sophisticated theatrical performances they embody. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Inside view of a Belgian over a book over Belgium

Despite some little mistake, this book is quite good book for people who are about to come to Belgium or ever went to Belgium. It describes different socio-professional classes in Belgium , riches and "poor", flemish and wallons, ... (but most are catholics).

The main default of this book is that is looks to me quite "old-fashioned" because now, society has evoluted a lot and lots of things have changed since the first voyage of Renée C. Fox.

In conclusion, if you're intersted in Belgium or in life in "traditionnal" european countries, you must readit. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is the first to explore the origins and nature of the demand for painting in Bruges over the course of the fifteenth century and its subse-quent effect on the community of painters and their workshop and marketing practices. The evolution of Bruges was fundamentally linked with commerce, and as a result of the city's thriving international trade and rising merchant class, it was to become one of the most affluent and cosmopolitan centers in late medieval Europe. However, only after the Duke of Burgundy moved his court to Bruges in the early decades of the fifteenth century would it begin to be a major center for the production of panel painting. This study examines the coming together of the opulent Burgundian court, an affluent urban bourgeoisie, and an increasingly expanding community of painters, and the effects of this dynamic social configuration on the newly emerging art of oil painting. Specifically, Wilson argues that while the nobility were not particularly active as patrons of paintings, members of the urban patriciate who hoped to enter into the circle of the court were nevertheless influenced by the nobility's culture of display and found that paintings effectively served their needs for representations of their aspirations for social advancement. She further suggests that, in commissioning altarpieces for ecclesiastical interiors, patrons were also concerned to include their portraits and coats of arms in an effort to promote the status and prestige associated with their families. The demand for paintings was therefore to escalate throughout the fifteenth century, resulting in painters' increasing involvement in the reproduction of popular compositions and the eventual emergence of a mass market for their art. ... Product Description
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on prepared culture media for the development of micro-organisms in Belgium face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying prepared culture media for the development of micro-organisms to Belgium? How important is Belgium compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of prepared culture media for the development of micro-organisms vary from one country of origin to another in Belgium? On the supply side, Belgium also exports prepared culture media for the development of micro-organisms. Which countries receive the most exports from Belgium? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers?

This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for prepared culture media for the development of micro-organisms in Belgium. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for prepared culture media for the development of micro-organisms for those countries serving Belgium via exports, or supplying from Belgium via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models.

In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Belgium fits into the world market for imported and exported prepared culture media for the development of micro-organisms. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Belgium in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Rubbish!Absolute and Total Rubbish!Riddled with factuals errors on every page.
As a Dutchman I have to say that, in my entire and long life, I have never - ever - read a single book that was so factually inaccurate with blatant errors and misinterpretations on virtually every single page!

Has a Dutch person ever read this piece of manure before it went to press?Obviously the authors - both non-Dutch (why?they couldn't find a local [out of 14 million people?] to write this?) have absolutely no idea what nonsense they are ejaculating on page and after page. This is self-evident from the notes about the authors on pages 220 and 221:"Hunt Janin (an American) `visits the Netherlands frequently' while Ria van Eil has obviously spent way too much time abroad to have kept an accurate finger on the pulse).

This "guide" is absolutely rubbish and I grieve for the trees that had to die for this pathetic attempt.I can only shudder at the credibility level of the other volumes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Intolerant Dutch
This book appears to be at least several years out of date. If the Dutch were ever truly tolerant, they aren't anymore. The book states that the visitor will quickly find that the Dutch love foreign visitors, foreign languages, etc.... The Dutch have become a patently intolerant bunch. But if you think about it, tolerance is only putting up with someone from outside. They've gone from putting up with outsiders to despising them, and wanting most of them gone since the death of Theo van Gogh. This book paints an unrealistically naive, and positive view that doesn't fit with the reality of life in The Netherlands today. That is for those of us who weren't born here, who have accents, or are visibly "different."

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
I read this book before a recent trip to Holland to meet my boyfriends' family. It was really helpful. It provided some basic insights into Dutch culture that differ from American culture. After the 10 day visit, I feel as if the book helped me understand the behavior of the Dutch people I met.My only complaint would be the book's claim that the Dutch are extremely friendly. This is only partially true. They are incredibly warm and welcoming if you are introduced to them by another Dutch citizen.Random people on the streets were really not welcoming or helpful at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book on life in the Netherlands
This series of books is so fabulous if you want to get to know the country you are visiting, not only if you want to move there but also if you just love to learn more than the surface of a country on your two week vacation. Great to read before and after a visit to the Netherlands. I learnt so much in this book that would have taken me months, years to learn by actually being in the country. Excellent resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars good tips and a good description of our country (I'm Dutch)
this book should be red by all people that plan on visiting the netherlands.
as dutch person i looked in it (it was a gift) and it is very truthfull ... Read more

Product Description
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts in Belgium face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts to Belgium? How important is Belgium compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts vary from one country of origin to another in Belgium? On the supply side, Belgium also exports human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts. Which countries receive the most exports from Belgium? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers?

This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts in Belgium. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts for those countries serving Belgium via exports, or supplying from Belgium via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models.

In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Belgium fits into the world market for ... Read more

The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Belgium in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Belgium is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Belgium compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes. ... Read more
