Household Ecology
Despite the opaque, academic name, this book is very readable and provides a lot of insight into the economic and cultural life of the Kekchi people in a respectful way.It is good to read a book that both honours the uniqueness of an indigenous people while at the same time recognizing them as creative human beings who respond to life pressures according to internal values like everyone else, and not as some sort of artifact of the past.

Wilk develops an excellent model for talking about social organization.Based around an ethnography of the Kekchi Maya, household ecology presents a model that allows the anthropologist to deal with such issues as history, gender relations, markets, subsistence and political organization (and that is easily transferred to different settings for comparative work).This is a book for readers interested in understanding how households function as social institutions, it is replete with information and useful data.Not for a beginner, but for the student of anthropology and ecology, this is an important text. ... Food systems have a need for better conceptual and applied tools to evaluate the extent to which they can provide a more stable foundation for attaining and maintaining food security. The book conceptually designs and appraises a more robust and dynamic food provision system (FPS) framework that integrates resilience and food security, that is, devises a framework to reconnect food, people and ecosystems to guard all three. The study then assesses two major FPS in Belize to illustrate how historical FPS resilience patterns and relationships ensure the food insecure persistently remain vulnerable and indigent. The best on Belize
In many ways Belize has fallen into a black hole in academic literature.Who would want to study an English-speaking carribean nation located in the Yucatan?No many people see it as a serious topic, and that is a shame.I read this book before traveling to Caye Caulker several years ago.I found it very interesting, and the best academic book on Belize.Get the book if you ever plan on traveling to Belize...and who wouldn't want to?

Anecdotal information on Belize is delicious!
Reading this book on Belize is a little like eating a coconut.First you have to get through the hard shell before you can enjoy the sweet nut.In this case, the hard shell is the academic context.Sutherland is aprofessor of anthropology at Macalester College in Minnesota. To thedegree her book is directed to a professional audience, with argumentsabout the "core/periphery model,""ecocolonialism" and "global culturalflow," Sutherland risks losing the attention of the lay reader.

The sweetmeats here are Sutherland's endlessly fascinating recollections of her ownexperiences in Belize, especially on Caye Caulker and on north AmbergrisCaye.Sutherland's mother (the redoubtable Lois Peyton Hartley SutherlandYoung) and other family members are long-time Belize hands, having firstvisited the country in 1971.Sutherland came to Caye Caulker in 1972, whenthe island had no telephone, no television, and no hotels.She has watchedit, and all of Belize, change in just a decade or two from an isolatedbackwater to a place closely connected to the world by the Internet,pirated cable TV and an all-digital, fiber-optic telephone system.

Thisis also a primer on Belizean politics, economics, tourism,media andfamily life.Her chapter on "Flapping Around" is an eye-opener.
