Indispensable resource for all serious flutists
"A Dictionary for the Modern Flutist" is a resource that anyone serious about the flute should own. My desk
where my computer sits has a small book shelf where I keep my indispensable
references. There are Harvard and Norton music dictionaries, Powel's "The
Flute", Quantz treatise, both of Nancy Toff's flute books, "The Great Flute
Makers of France', Boehm "The Flute and Flute Playing", the Vester and
Pellerite flute literature books. I had to remove my "History of Western
Music" to make room for my new indispensable reference: "A Dictionary for
the Modern Flutist" by Susan J. Maclagan. Yep, I think it is that good.

Informative and useful
This is an informative and useful volume. It contains the biographies of one - thousand well- known Jews. However as could be expected there is considerable room for doubting some selections and lamenting the exclusion ofothers. My own particular trouble- spot was the omission of Rabbi Shlomo Goren who contributed so much to the building of the modern State of Israel. Rabbi Goren not only shaped the Army Rabbinate, he helped create the religious law that is central in many different areas ofJewish life today . He is also the rare combination of a man of book and sword, a man deeply learned and at the same time courageous in action.
One other point. Jewish history is filled with the lives of thousands upon thousands of remarkable individuals whose creations and works are not known. A true biography of Jews who made real contributions to their own people and to the world would have to include hundreds of thousands of entries. The Cambridge Dictionary of American Biography
I found this publication while looking for a book written by Ruben Berrios Martinez. The Cambridge Dictionary of American Biography mistakingly states that Mr. Berrios Martinez was born in 1930 and died in 1993. In addition, the reviewed excerpt states that Mr. Berrios Martinez was the Puerto Rico Independence Party until 1993. Both factoids are false. First, Mr. Berrios Martinez was born in 1938 and is gladly alive and well. Furthermore, he is still the President of the Puerto Rico Independence Party. Among Mr. Berrios Martinez's contributions, he is one of the founding members of the COPPPAL (Conferencia Permanente de Partidos Politicos de America Latina), is a respected and reputed member of the Socialist International. While I was focused on Mr. Berrios Martinez's biography, I wonder how many more inaccurate facts are included in this publication. A valuable tool
This book is a joy to use. The biographical entries are both succinct and adequate. It covers a good balance of Protestant, Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox figures and avoids the myopia of some similar volumes. I have used several Christian biographical reference books; this is my favorite.

Disappointing Reference for my particular research
I can only comment on this reference as it was used for my research.I am writing a book about the versions of the Bible in English.In doing that I have compiled a list of about 1,587 individuals involved in revising, editing or translating different versions of the Bible.Of that number only 54 were listed in this reference.The majority of those listed were Catholics.This work was not very useful in my particular work.

What is the purpose of this book?
This is just a quick overview of the book as I have just bought it. I find that the author's selection of who's who rather inconsistent. There are indeed many personalities of the bygone era and some not so well-known ones; you will definitely find someone whom you don't know even if you are a champion of quizzes and trivia or simply extremely well-versed in this area... But I found it puzzling that I did not find in its entries "Louis Berkhof" but "Charles Hodge" was there. "Matthew Henry" was present but not "Matthew Poole", why this is so, I don't understand. Is it an intentional or careless omission? It is comprehensive in one way yet lacking. I find it is rather lackadaisical. I suppose there are better books at this price. I gave it 3 stars for its contents but not its treatment of each entry, which is rather cursory. ... Read more
