Great Kids Series
The Rotten School series books are great!My boys love them.I read to them daily, and they usually pick one of the Rotten School books.They are funny and entertaining.My older son, 7 (almost 8), loves to read them in bed before he goes to sleep.I'm glad I have finally found a series he enjoys reading on his own.

Jovial Bob Stine meets (shudder) R.L. Stine in this new series called Rotten School, an elementary boarding school for boys and girls. The Rottenest Angel (Book 10) features new kid Angel Goodeboy, who behaves in mean and sneaky ways to thwart fellow student Bernie Bridges, by getting him into big time trouble. Situations occur that are all too true in real life, such as Angel "accidentally" deleting Bernie's history report from Bernie's computer, and then acting in a self-deprecating way to show his remorse: Angel bangs his head against the wall, mea culpa! mea culpa! until Bernie grabs his head to make him stop. At that minute, Mrs. Heine, teacher and dorm supervisor, walks into the room and concludes that Bernie has been pounding Angel's head into the wall--which is exactly what Angel wanted to have happen. In many similar situations, Angel comes up smelling like a rose, and Bernie gets into trouble. That's the spooky part of this Stine series--the actions of these zany characters can be horribly real. Told in the first person by Bernie, it is well-written with excellent grammar, punctuation, textual variations, and is loaded with plenty of gross and corny boy-humor. Aptly and engagingly (and hysterically) illustrated by Trip Park, this series will appeal to reluctant and avid readers alike.

"Animal House" for kids
My 7-year-old son and I like to read "Goosebumps" together but when I found that all the books in that series had been checked out from the library, I picked up this book since it's by the same author.

Conclusion: While this book isn't terrible, "Goosebumps" is better.

The star of the Rotten School series is a snotty, arrogant fourth-grader named Bernie Bridges. I kept waiting for the part where he lets his bluster down and you start to like him, but it never happens. Other characters are either stupid, manipulative or stuck-up. It's like "Animal House" for the elementary school set. This is definitely not the book to read if you're looking for role models for your kids.

That said, the story does move along at a nice pace and you will get some laughs, as long as you don't take it too seriously.

Rotten School books series by R.L. Stine
I am buying these books by R.L. Stine for our 8yr. old grandson. We gave him book #1 for Christmas and he absolutely loved it, that is why I decided to continue to purchase the series. The books do not take him too long to read which for his age is good in that it holds his interest. When I asked him if he liked the books his eyes lit up and a big smile appeared on his face and he answered 'yes, they are so cool'.My grandson and I highly recommend these books.

We Love Rotten School and RL Stine
Another great series of books for RL Stine. These keep kids attention and have them coming back for more. If you are trying to get your kids into Chapter books, then get these. They are entertaining and funny and most of them if not all are worth AR points. They are a fun read, so good your little will probably have it read before the end of the day. fun read
This book and others in the Rotten School series have kept my 9 year old son interested in reading.He picks them up without prompting and reads them quite frequently.This is very important in my case as we live in Costa Rica and he gets most of his information in Spanish.This book helps keeps him using and thinking in English.

Great to use to teach English
My bilingual nine year old son enjoys reading this book to me and I enjoy reading it to him.He lives in a Spanish speaking environment and this keeps him using his English to preserve both languages.

Shake, Rattle, and Hurl
I did not like this book.It was not what I had expected from Stine.I thought it would be amusing, but it wasn't.To me it was disgusting, and I really didn't want the child for whom I bought it to read it.A kid can get into enough trouble without being encouraged to misbehave in extremely vulgar ways.

A must read for...well, anyone
The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks focuses on the sophomore year of the eponymous Frankie, a legacy student at Alabaster Prep. After a summer of rather dramatic physical changes (in the growing up sense), Frankie finds herself finally able to get some attention at school. Some of this attention comes from Matthew Livingston, Frankie's crush, and pretty soon into the book, she's his girlfriend...which comes with its own set of obstacles. Part of being Matthew's girlfriend means hanging out with Matthew's friends, a group of close knit future "Old Boys" led jointly by Matthew and the scholarship-student "wild" kid Alpha, who prides himself on having begged his way back into Alabaster after a dreadful year in New York City public school.

On one hand, Frankie loves being a part of the group--the guys are clever and funny, and have a genuinely good time together. The problem is, Frankie is not truly a part of their group, no more than Alpha's girlfriend Elizabeth or Dean's girlfriend Star, and it's something she's constantly aware of. Especially when Matthew shrugs her off as "adorable" or "harmless", or ditches her whenever Alpha summons him. Following him one night, she learns of his involvement in the Loyal Order of the Basset Hounds, an Alabaster Prep secret society dedicated to hanging out and drinking beer, and sometimes planning big school pranks. In an attempt to prove she's as worthy as recognition as Alpha or Matthew, Frankie masterminds a series of school-wide pranks that gets everybody's attention.

This book is a little different than Lockhart's others. It's told in third person, from the point of view, it seems, of someone telling all about Frankie's "disreputable history". She does a pretty fantastic job of getting the historical perspective voice, while managing to stay present in Frankie's mind. At once, you can get the idea of how Frankie's plans unfold immediately, as well as a sense of distance from the events. Good stuff.

It's also a pretty important book for girls, I'd say. Lockhart doesn't deal with overt sexism in this book: there's no abuse or sexual harassment or anything like that. What she does focus on is the place of a girl in a world dominated by boys, even if they are relatively respectful and friendly boys. Frankie resents not being invited to join the Basset Hounds, not being considered a threat, being held to a different standard than the boys. She's bothered by the way Matthew doesn't seem to care about her life, understand the points she tries to make, or admire her the way he admires his friends. These are real, real issues for many girls who maybe don't think they can complain about standards of treatment because they've never been overtly disrespected or abused. There is still a subtle lack of respect for women throughout our society, and Lockhart does a fairly brilliant job of showing it in her Alabaster microcosm.

A book that will make you laugh out loud and wish you were in a secret society
I present you Frankie Landau-Banks, named Frankie because her father wanted a son. Although, regardless of the name, her father does not think much of her. Neither does anyone else for that matter. Over the summer she blossoms into a young woman, but still no one thinks of her as more than "bunny rabbit". When she learns of a secret society, and just perhaps stumbles on some society secrets, she thinks she could run the society much better than "Alpha". When her pranks go too far though, Frankie knows she has to own up and admit it was her at the front of the pack, even if it means losing the boy of her dreams.

This was a ridiculously entertaining read. You will instantly either love or hate Frankie, there is no in-between. I loved her, I loved her word obsession where she decided that some words (those which aren't really words, but should be) are neglected, mostly neglected positives (I guess you'll have to read to find out). While Frankie's sister and mother claim to be feminist, Frankie takes it to a new level and completely dominates the secret society(all male) at her school. This is a fantastic girl power book akin to Fried Green Tomatoes (girl power wise, no crying and murder here). TOWANDA!!!! So, yes read this book. It has girl power, romance, secret societies, secrets, pranks and basset hounds. E. Lockhart is a really great funny, fun writer and this book is certainly no disappointment. So throw this on top of your TBR pile because you deserve it.

Y.A. Love: I'm a character junkie and I LOVE Frankie :)
I've only read one other book by E. Lockhart, and I hate to say it, but I wasn't overly impressed.In the fall I attended a Y.A. conference and the speaker took some time to talk about The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks.He said nothing but good things about it, but what sparked my attention is when he said it pairs well with The Chocolate War.In the spring when I put together my Donors Choose fundraiser I made sure to include this book.I'm so very happy that I did!

First of all, if you haven't figured it out already, I'm a character junkie.If a character is developed well, it's almost a guarantee that I'll love the book.Frankie is absolutely wonderful; I'd go so far to say she's one of my favorite Y.A. characters.She's at a private school trying to escape the shadow of her older, more popular sister.She has a great vocabulary (I especially love her made up words) and she's unsure of herself, but not in an annoying way.Frankie doesn't want to be her family's "Bunny Rabbit" anymore.She needs to prove everyone wrong and show what she's made of.Everyone will know that she's smarter than the rest.Frankie starts proving this when she and Matthew Livingston begin dating and he won't let her be a part of the secret society he's joined called The Loyal Order of the Basset Hounds.

E. Lockhart has written a true "girl power" book, but it isn't overly girly.I definitely would compare this to The Chocolate War because of the setting and the secret society, but it also reminds of John Green's Looking for Alaska because of the pranks Frankie pulls.This book is witty, intelligent and fun.Frankie bends over backwards infiltrating The Loyal Order and secretly masterminding their pranks, but she can't truly take credit for her work.She is forced to learn the hard way how to prove herself properly.

I highly recommend reading The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks.It is a 2009 Michael L. Printz Honor Book and a 2008 National Book Award Finalist in the Young People's Literature category.

Underappreciated
I hate reviews that tell the whole story so I will simply say, I wish there was a Book Two. I hated seeing the end of the story. This has to be the best teen read I have come across in the last year...and yes, that includes certain more popular books. Lockhart doesn't take the obvious road and she allows Frankie to do her own thing. Sometimes writers twist events and characters to fit into a mold that will make their work more marketable or more appealing to how they themselves would want things to be. Not E. Lockhart, she allows her story to take the path that's weeded over and largely unpleasant. It was a fantastic read that I will be reading again..since it is sadly not a series.

Entertaining and insightful, but also a little obscure for its intended audience
I picked this book up at the library and wasn't 100% sure if it would be my type of book. I got it anyway and after reading the books I was really interested in, I picked up this one. I'm glad I read it because it really is a good book.


The story centers around Frankie Landau-Banks, a newly blossomed sophomore who is attending Alabaster Preparatory Academy, the same boarding school attended by her father and sister. During her freshman year, Frankie's sister was still in school to guide her around and watch out for her. Therefore Frankie was able to hang out with a more popular crowd but was not actually part of the group. Now that her sister has graduated, Frankie will have to navigate through school on her own. Although she's an underclassman member of the debate team (and the Geek Club Conglomerate, by pure accident Frankie manages to intrigue and become the girlfriend of Matthew, one of the most popular seniors. While in most YA books this would cause the main character to be overjoyed, Frankie is unsettled by Matthew and his group of friends (including Alpha, someone she had met before yet he pretends not to have remembered the meeting). Frankie is unsettled by Matthew's devotion to his friends and how no matter how much Matthew involves her in his life, he is never a part of hers. Frankie soon discovers that Matthew and his friends are members of the school's secret society, The Loyal Order of the Basset Hounds, the same secret society her father was a member of when he was at Alabaster. Upon discovery of this, Frankie decides that she wants in and she embarks on her mission to infiltrate the Loyal Order.


I believe this book offers a fresh twist on prep school life and a teen girl's interactions and relationships with guys. Unlike Gossip Girl, there are no immature cat fights, purposely teasing and belittling one specific person, desperate and mindless swooning over boys, and obsessive tendencies towards gossip and fashion. Also, the book is much much much more intellectual then it's other teen prep school counterparts. It's also pretty mild when it comes to relationships. While it is suggested that two characters have had sex, the main character and her boyfriend don't do much besides kissing. I don't recall any particular use of profanity or questionable language. However, the boys in the story were keen on drinking beer and pot is referenced to by Frankie's fathers recollection of his time at Alabaster. The only other content problem was the blatant disregard for rules. The story is pretty much based on pranks and the breaking of both written and unspoken rules. While the pranks pose no harm to people, it shows disrespect for the institution.


I personally found this to be a really interesting story. I was eager to learn the secrets of the Bassets as much as Frankie was. The plot was a great one and a welcome new perspective on the prep school trend. The plot was engaging and fresh and seems like a very new concept to me. Based on the plot alone I would give this book 5 stars.

My problem with the story is mainly Frankie and the writing.
From a technical point of view, some parts of the book flew way over my head. Although the chapters are not long, the author did take up about half a chapter discussing a grammatical concept of "neglected positives" that I am still unsure of whether this concept exists or does not exist. The author seemed to be hinting that Frankie invented this concept. Neglected positives are described as words that are apart of a traditionally negative word but that have had the negative prefix removed. Examples of this would be "gruntled" stemming from "disgruntled" or "maculate" as opposed to "immaculate." Now although this is an obscure and very possibly made up form of vocabulary, I did not need more then one page to fully understand the concept. It's pretty self explanatory for something that may not even exist. I thought multiple pages on a fake grammar lesson was totally unnecessary.
Another thing that readers might find obscure is that for the rest of the book, Frankie proceeds to use words like "gruntled" and "turbed" (the neglected positive of disturbed). Not only is it slightly annoying to have these maybe fictional words thrown at you, but her use of them results in the other character questioning her vocabulary and Frankie having to explain it to them. While staying on the same subject, I also would like to note that Frankie's boyfriend Matthew is the son of a newspaper tycoon who got his start as a copy-editor. This means that Matthew also donates some grammar lessons to the dialogue. Not only do I not want to hear grammar lessons as I read a book for fun, the plot can totally make do without them. These grammar corrections just slow down the plot. I understand that they help explain why Frankie tries to infiltrate the boys club, but the rest of the plot can do that without discussions of grammar.
Another thing that broke up the plot was Frankie's essays for one of her classes. Although the essays on (real) groups of people who intentionally go out and break the unspoken rules of society are related to the pranks the Basset's play on the school, I could have really gone without 4 pages about the Suicide Club of San Francisco and another 4 on the Cocophony Society. I feel that the story just had too much unnecessary lessons on the most random things and it really hurt the plot.


I also wasn't pleased with how at the end *SPOILER* although the regular punishment for her pranks would be expulsion, Frankie got away with probation because the school didn't want to lose her fathers donations. While the book wasn't cliche, the ending obviously played upon the cliche that money can buy your way out of trouble.


My last problem is with Frankie herself. Although the plot is about a girl trying to fit in with boys who were their own secret society, I find her infiltration of the boys group more then just curiosity and low self esteem. In my eyes the distance she feels from the boys while being a part of her group is natural of boys of that age. Frankie tells of how when one of the boys broke up with his girlfriend (who would always sit with the boys at lunch and be included in the group), the next day no one said hello to her or acknowledged her. Frankie perceives this to be because she is no longer in their world so she no longer exists. Because she was just a girlfriend, she wasn't a real group member and is easily expendable.
Frankie also makes a point at sitting at the boys' senior table although the boys have not arrived to the dining hall yet. Frankie sees this as an act of rebellion against the group structure yet when everyone comes to the table, no one really cares that Frankie sat there prior to the senior boys arriving. While most people would be relieved that they could get away with doing that, Frankie seems annoyed that no one was offended by her action. I gathered the sense that she wanted them to be shocked and that she was offended that they didn't notice her being there first. It felt that because they didn't make a big deal about her sitting there, she had to retaliate.
Frankie's reasoning can be so immature and juvenile at times all while being overly deep. She thinks she is outwitting the boys but in reality she is just being jealous and manipulative because in her mind the boys are practically discriminating against her and she is trying to defeat them over something that has never happened yet. While the boys have a more sophisticated method of being high school boys, in reality they are just that and they are acting no different then other boys their ages except they have a club name to call themselves. I admire Frankie's roommate though because she didn't care whether or not boys had a secret club. She was just content in the life she was living. Overall I just thought Frankie was too obsessed with "the man" being out to get her and she went beyond curiosity. I felt like she wasn't trying to figure out why her boyfriend was sometimes distant as much as she was trying to make sense of the conspiracy theory in her head. I actually felt bad for Matthew because sometimes it seemed as if Frankie was more invested in making a point and fighting "the man" then in having a boyfriend.


While this was very interesting and I really loved it (I even shed a couple of tears at the end) not matter how much I criticize Frankie's motives, it got very intellectual a times. Not only was there grammar lessons, but Frankie's motives can be seen as very sophisticated and cerebral all while being juvenile. But, I do recommend this book. As long as you can deal with some grammatical references, this is a really great book with a fresh new perspective. The plot is a good one and I really appreciated the fact that this wasn't a normal cliche prep school book. While I thought Frankie did over analyze the situation sometimes, I would rather take that over the shallow clothes, boys, and money topics of prep school books such as Gossip Girl. It's better to think about the story and have a reaction then it is to just read about the superficial. So if you're ok with thinking about what happened, I recommend this book. ... Read more

Survival
The story of this book can be summed up in one word: SURVIVAL. Teenage boys go to a private boarding school that is underfunded. To make up the funding select boys are hooked on drugs forced into sexual slavery. They are terribly abused and the prostitution is funded by a South American drug cartel. Two boys become friends and survive by supporting each other through the ordeal.

The main story is told by the writer. Names are hidden to protect the guilty from retribution and lawsuits. Those that criticize this book need only turn on the news and see story after story to know that stories like this are not works of fiction. The only consolation it the main character and his friend survive. There is no Hollywood ending to this book but it is a must read.

A glimpse into a world of horror and a friendship that runs deeper than blood...
I just finished reading this book today. I only started reading it the day before yesterday and I had a hard time putting it down when I needed to. I must start off by saying this: anyone considering reading this book, be warned! This book is very intricately coreographed and detailed. Mr. Clint Adams certainly does not hold back in this book, which in my opinion is awesome. I find it refreshing that someone finally writes about his exeriences so openly instead of purposely leaving everything to the imagination of the reader out of fear that someone learn the details of their experiences. Mr. Adams obviously worked very hard on this book and from what I understand, it took him five years to write it. I believe it though. The words in this book not only described actions deeply and openly, but they further managed to capture the thoughts and feelings of these desperate, abused boys so efficiently that reading it almost seemed the same as living through it with those boys. Having dealt with many similar experiences myself - minus the psycho boarding school and big business conspiracy - I found that I was able to channel myself into the minds of these boys. And Adams' words managed to evoke feelings from within myself that I have not felt in years - feelings both good and bad.

For anyone who wants to have a better understanding of what it's like to go through such things as sexual abuse, physical abuse, drug abuse or all of the above, this book contains it all. Like I said before, you need to read this book with an open mind and prepare yourself for a emotional coaster ride that you cannot imagine. When you read this, you'll understand the horrors of such a life, but you'll also come to understand how truly deep one friendship can get. The two main boys in this story who deal with these tribulations are put through a unknown level of earthly hell together, but they somehow grow closer and closer throughout the entire book, to a point that they can prove to the reader that in all honesty, greater love hath no man than he who is willing give up his life for his best friend, just as the Bible says.

If you decide to read this book, you'll definitely have mixed emotions afterward, but you will also come to grip with the cold reality that things like this DO happen in real life to real boys and girls. It is definitely worth the read. I recommend it very highly if you want to read about such experiences without constantly being fed the psycho-babble bull crap that you read in other books dealing with this particular subject matter.

In response to the 2 reviews posted before this one, perhaps these 2 readers are right.Perhaps a frank discussion of child sexual abuse told from the perspective of the victim and based on real events was a waste of the 5 years it took me to write this book. Maybe it would be better to simply pretend that such occurrences never take place.After all, keeping hushed up about such matters has served our society well for the 30 plus years since the events described in this book took place.Right?Or is it possible that the time has come for closed minds to be opened and for knee jerk dismissals to be resisted.If knowledge is power then it just might be that the light that I am trying to shine on this scourge of our world will help us all to understand better how to fight back against these atrocities which are still being perpetrated on our young people today.In the end I leave it up to the reader to decide.

The Woman Question
This book deals primarily with the evaulation of women's education in Russian society in the 19th century in response to the Woman Question.It is a fastinating book and in many ways is still applicable to the women's movement today.

dont waste ur time
this book has nothing to do with boarding schools. it talks about a 15 year old girl who's life's ruined by her neighbor Veretitsyn, who started questioning her about her education getting her all confused which led her to failing all her exams. he drove her to a miserable life. but then they meet again after 8 years in Petersburg where she becomes happy again as an artist with a new life.

Check out Ballet Friends if you like ballet
I have this book. I don't know why everyone likes it. It's boring and dull, and not funny. There's this new series called Ballet Friends, and I got book one as soon as it came out. It's called Ballet Friends: Get to the Point! and is WAY better! The characters are real and totally entertaining. It's all laughs, laughs, laughs. I have the sequel on order (Ballet Friends 2: The Rise of Beezilla), and it sounds hysterical! Trust me, Ballet Friends is the way to go!

very good sequel
In the second chapter of The Royal Ballet School (R.B.S.) Diaries, Ellie has made it into the R.B.S.'s Lower School. She describes all of her classes and ballet moves with superb details. She has made great friends with all of the other students, except for Lara, a fact that Ellie tries to change. Ellie shows her fantastic qualities of hard work, determination, and compassion. A wonderful lesson is mixed in with a very good ballet story. Ellie is an amazing example for any young girl, but especially ballerinas. The only negative comment I can make of the book, is that it can sometimes come off as an advertisement of the R.B.S., which is fine, but can be annoying at times.

Lara's Leap Of Faith
When Ellie arrives at the Royal Ballet School she easily becomes friends with all of the year 7 girls except for Lara.Ellie tries to get along with her but Lara doesn't welcome her offer.One day in Ballet class Ms.Wells anounces that there will be Nutcracker try-outs.Of course everyone is excited but not everyone will be selected to perform.However Lara and Ellie are two of the girls picked and are both given the same part.Lara was scheduled to perform on December 12th and Ellie was scheduled to perform on December 1st.But when Ellie finds out that she told her family that she was performing on the 12th instead of the 1st she is worried.Her mother's wedding was on the same day that she was performing.How would she ever be able to be at both events? But Lara is nice enough to switch show dates to resolve Ellie's problem.Without Lara it would have NEVER worked out.

THIS BOOK IS SO TOTALLY COOL!! IT IS A MUST TO READ!!
Reporter's Opinion: I think that that this is a great book for all girls, especially girls that are into ballet.

Summary: Ellie made it into the Royal Ballet School! She gets to do ballet everyday, but she has to do regular school work, too. She becomes really good friends with all of her dorm mates, except for Lara. At the tryouts, Ellie by accidentally bumped into Lara, and Lara thought Ellie was just trying to mess up her chances of getting into the Royal Ballet School. But soon they got it straightened out. They also got to try out for The Nutcracker. Bryony, Lara, and Ellie were chosen to be party children in it! When Ellie e-mails everybody about the great news, she typed the wrong date! She was dancing on the 1st, but she e-mailed that she was dancing on the 12th! So, when her mom called her, saying that she is getting married on the 1st and everyone bought tickets to see her on the 12th, Ellie finds herself in a big mess! She talked to Rose (the organizer,) and gets everything straightened out. She didn't even mess up once!

Not exactly a winner for our 6 year old...
We have een reading a few chapters of similar-level books to our 6 year old each night. So far, he hasn't turned down or stopped reading a single book... until this one. I purchased the first 4 in the series to take advantage of Amazon's 4-for-3 promotion but he asked his Daddy to stop reading after chapter two. He just didn't like the story and we moved on to something else. RL Stine for the younger set? I thought that would be a winner! In our home, not so much.

"Rotten School: The Big Blueberry Barf-Off" is about a kid named Bernie Bridges.He goes to Rotten School and he rules the school.He convinces the teachers and workers to do all sorts of things. He even convinced the school chef that Milky Way bars are a vegetable.The only person he can't rule is Sherman Oaks.Sherman has one thing that Bernie wants: a super cool watch that has 42 functions on it including telling time and making popcorn.

Bernie challenges Sherman to a pie-eating contest. If Sherman wins, Bernie has to carry him to classes on his back.If Bernie wins, Sherman gives him his watch.Bernie has a plan to win.He puts Beast in the contest.Beast eats lots and lots of things so he should be able to win with no problem.Before the contest, Sherman bet Beast that he could eat 50 hamburgers.Beast won the bet by eating 54 burgers but now he was too full for the pie eating contest.So Bernie said that he would buy Beast two Snickers bars if he ate the pie.(Beast loved Snickers bars).The contest was still on.

Beast won the contest but then they got caught by Ms. Monella.She walked in and asked who was responsible.Sherman put all the blame on Bernie.As Ms. Monella was yelling at Bernie, everybody started barfing up the blueberry pie.They all got in trouble for eating the pies and had to clean up the classroom.

I liked "The Big Blueberry Barf-Off" a lot!! It was funny and full of gross things.I can't wait to read the rest of the "Rotten School" series.

Rotten School House Books
I was looking for some books on type for a long car trip for my daughter and me. I grabed this hopping she would like it. Well she LOVED it. She is up to #9 in the series. She loves the play on words. Some girls may not like this type of humor but most boys will. R.L. Stine has done it again!

Laugh-Out-Loud Funny
My nephew and I had so much fun with this book. He read it out loud to me and we both found it hilarious. The characters, their names, the situations, all of it was hysterical and the book's resolution is perfect. Loved it. Off to order Rotten School book #2.

The Best Book Series for Boys
My son who is 9 years old can not get enough of this series. He has read books 1 through 13 and wants more! He usually reads one of these books in about two days. The characters are so well developed and the situations they get into are hilarious. These books are clever and fun. It's unbelievable to me that they are written by the same person who wrote the Goosebumps series which my son definitely does not care for. Get this book for your child, but watch out--you'll never be able to get just one--they'll be begging you to buy the entire series.

Lots of pranks to read about! by C.S. from Annapolis
If you like funny and tricky stuff you should read this. Rotten School: the Great Smelling Bee is written by R.L.Stine. Bernie Bridges, Sherman Oaks, Gassy, Mr. Off, Headmaster Upchuck, Mrs.Heinie, Feenman, and Crench are the main characters. Bernie Bridges has a problem. Sherman Oaks knows that Bernie has pets and the school rule is no pets are allowed. My favorite character is Bernie because he's smart and funny

Some characters I can relate to are Bernie because he's smart and tricky and also Mr. Off because he can play music well, but he can't sing. A connection to the book is text-to-self because Bernie is smart like me.

I liked this book because it was funny. My favorite part was when Headmaster Upchuck found out that Barry [dog dressed up like a student] was the only student who stayed for the exam. Students in grades 2-5 would like this book.Make sure you read not only this book, but the entire Rotten School series.

A school-story series that endures
I grew up on a steady diet of the Chalet school series - now I want my daughter to do the same.This book is one of a series - like M&M'S - once you eat one, you have to devour all.

One of the best in the series
"Rivals" is unique in that it deals not only with the Chalet School Girls, but with a entire new group: the students of "Saints", a new school across the lake that competes with the Chalet School in every way. The Chalet School girls, including Joey Bettany, must learn to deal with girls from different backgrounds and with decidedly different ideas and attitudes from their own.Through trial and error, between staff as well as students, the Chalet School makes way for the newcomers. This book also plays on the early married life of the founder, Madge Bettany, and her often mentioned twin, Dick Bettany.

Jo and The Chalet School
