5-0 out of 5 stars Miniature bonsai made easy...
Absolutely the best book if you want to do miniature bonsai. Very informative and easy to follow!

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth It.
Great book. Well layed out. Great pics, illustrations, before and after etc.

Not as much on actual mame or minature bonsai as I wished. Now that I have studied book more I am really glad I purchased it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute treasure!
This is a book that goes into detail, has beautiful pictures and good directions.I consider it a treasure in my library of Bonsai books!

1-0 out of 5 stars Most disapointing bonsai book ever
Unless you are an absolute beginner, this book will not tell you much you don't already know. Not only is it lacking in specific "how to" info, the pictures aren't even very inspiring.Look at the cover - a little juniper lacking in style and 3 accent plants. That's about as good as it gets.Save your money on this one, folks.

3-0 out of 5 stars Miniature bonsai from garden stock
Perhaps the above would be a better title. This is not a book about the heights to which miniature bonsai can soar...This is simply a book about how you, or I, or anyone else can make passable minature (mame) bonsai in an hour or so, by pruning and wiring common garden material.

Not that there's anything wrong with that - and indeed I found the book a great inspiration when I was just starting on bonsai. But it really doesn't do justice to the wonderful art that is mame bonsai. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for indoor bonsais
The greatest thing about this book is that it is just about indoor bonsais!

There are a lot of bonsai books. Many of the books tell you about shaping and creating, planting and repotting, the different types of soil, the tools you will need, pruning, cutting, and trimming, how to wire or bend the branches and all of those necessary things that it takes to make a tree or plant a bonsai. This book has all of this information and it presents it very well.I am sure there are some bonsai books that do this better, but this book is totally devoted to indoor bonsais and there are not many books on indoor bonsais.

An indoor bonsai does not mean that it lives indoors all year. All bonsais grow better if they are outside as long as your area will permit. An indoor bonsai is one that can live in the house during the winter without a dramatic set back.Outdoor bonsais on the other hand must spend the winter out doors. If you try to keep them in the house for the winter they will eventually die. Most bonsai books include many of the indoor bonsais, but they don't label them as indoor bonsais and they don't tell you how to keep them thriving in the house for the winter.

In this book there are over 40 indoor bonsais that are presented on a two-page format. One page has a beautiful large picture of each bonsai, plus a small picture on the next page. The second page has general information about the bonsai; it's origin, size, flower and fruit information, and other interesting information about this bonsai. Then the rest of the page has the following sections: Location, Watering, Feeding, Transplanting, Soil, Pruning, Wiring and Propagation. It also has symbols for light, water and temperature during the winter, so you can see that information at a glance.

A smaller version of this book is "Indoor Bonsai" written by the same author. It is similar, but there are fewer trees with the two-page format. It does have a section in the back listing many more indoor trees with a paragraph on each of them.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for the novice
This book, of the 3 I purchased, is the one I refer to most often. It has detailed descirptions of each tree along wiht detailed instructions on care for the tree including maintenance, repotting, propagation, etc. Very easy to understand and has answered the vast majority of my questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great How To Manual for Beginners
Paul Lesniewicz describes the bonsai art with simplicist and skill.Thisbook is full of wonderful photos and great advise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
This book says everything from how to care for your bonsai, to how to growbonsai from cuttings and seeds. This is a great book for beginners as wellas the experinced grower. ... Read more

Product Description
Many people consider bonsai a form of art. Bonsai can be an art, or for many, a hobby. Bonsai is also a form of horticulture and landscaping. Many interpretations of bonsai exist, something you will learn in this introductory guideto bonsai. Before you learn how to engage in the art or hobby of bonsai, you have to know what “bonsai” means. Most people think “bonsai” is a simple term used to describe a type of plant. This definition is only partially correct. To understandbonsai, first understand the foundation for the term, “bonsai.” The word bonsai when literally translated means “tray planting” or “potted plant”. Bonsai is much more however, than buying a tree or a plant and growing it in a pot or tray.Bonsai is in fact, an ancient practice involving the shaping and pruning of trees and shrubs into a structured form. The practice of bonsai for many can be quitepeaceful and relaxing. Many engage in bonsai as a form of meditation or stress relief. Others enjoy the challenge of creating the perfect bonsai ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Growing Bonsai: A practical encyclopedia....
On the surface this book seems to have 600 photos of trees but it repeats toward the back many of the same trees over and over. Also I hope you can read what appears to be Dutch because the first 19 pages are in that language and then the rest of the book is English! Definately a book for the dilatante or coffee table casual reader.

This is a visually beautiful book that is even more valuable for its contents.A must have if you want to be inspired by beautifully photographed examples of classic trees, along with guidelines for how to begin to create trees in those style. 5-0 out of 5 stars Bonsai: Its Art, Science, History and Philosophy by Deborah R. Koreshoff
Excellent book, easily the best book I have read on Bonsai & I can highly recommend it. If you want a full, well explained & illustrated account of all aspects of bonsai & want to read just one book then this in my opinion is the book. I like the fact that it covers the science as well as the art as when you understand why you do something it makes it easier to implement. If you are a beginner & have no other access to instruction you could learn the art of bonsai by just reading, understanding & implementing the information gleaned from this book. Written by somebody who has walked the walk & not just talked the talk & written in a practical & non academic way!

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive coverage for beginners to experts
This text was the one i'd been searching for so long. I've purchased a dozen bonsai books over the years and finally found Koreshoff's book. It's straight foreward, simple, and explains so many things i'd been confusedabout that other bonsai books don't touch on like the philosophical purposeof the shapes of trees. Bottom line is this: you can get many bonsai booksand get close to what Koreshoff has done, or you can purchase hers and bedone. You won't regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A compendium of practical and innovative bonsai techniques.
With few color photographs but many excellent line drawings and lucid writing, the author covers all the essentials. The techniques presented are both practical and innovative. The chapters on shaping, soil, and styling are exceptional.Only Naka's two volume set rivals this publication. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference book
In addition to fine and detailed chapters on the horticultural aspects of good bonsai, there are many superb photographs and drawings of very high quality Taiwanese bonsai. The chapters devoted to the use of rocks both as planting surfaces and compositional icons are comprehensive and give the reader a rare look at bonsai from a decidedly Chinese perspective. There are also excellent chapters on plant physiology and nutrition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality book received in superb condition at right time
I received the book at the time when I expected it. It was in superb condition as promised. I will recommend this seller for anybody who do not want to be disappointed when using the net buying books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good... but mostly a 'picture gallery'
There is a lot of good information, but it is mostly beginner 'common sense' bonsai information, such as how to sow seeds.Half the book contains just pictures of bonsai (beautiful, but only a small portion is dedicated to 'principles and techniques' like the title promises).I LOVED the section on miniature rock formations and a glimpse into 'suiseki' (the art of rock appreciation).A good book for a the coffee table.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
The book is awesome great pics good tips for almost everything its big i mean the book is really big if you like bonsai you will like this book the quality is good the book came in great condition not even a scratch i recomend it 100%

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Reaction
I ordered this book because it sounded comprehensive and promised lots of photos. Having spent a good bit of time looking it over, I confess to very mixed feelings about it. There is a lot of excellent information inside and some very handsome bonsai portraits, but the overall subject treatment varies: sometimes Dr. Liang goes into depth, while at other times her approach remains superficial. Her section "Bonsai Creation," for instance, runs all of 4 pages (primarily photographs) and essentially recommends spending a lot of time looking at trees. Worse, I couldn't escape the sense that the book is in some regards a vanity publication. Many of the pictures focus on Dr. Liang and her trees, occasionally including family members, and very few of those pictures are instructive; they seem intended instead to show off her collection. And while the writing is generally solid, the English is at times stilted and could have used editing by someone for whom it is not a second language. Having said all that, it's not a bad book by any means and it does contain useful information. However, I recommend thinking of it as one source among many and suggest buying a used copy to save a few dollars. ... Read more
