Product Description
The role of the designer and architect in the planning and design of bridges is undergoing radical change, with architects now being appointed before the engineer on a growing number of projects. The relationship between the two roles is therefore on a different level than either will have previously experienced.

This book details the process of design whereby the inspiration for a bridge is developed into the final reality of the built solution. It looks at the functions of a bridge, defining purpose of place and context, the spirit of creativity and the reasoned progression of an idea. ... Read more

Product Description
Bridges analyzes how helped his daughter Laura realize heracross-the-board-intellectual potential and enter Dartmouth College atage 14 years. As a result, Bridges unwittingly comes to understandthat he had founded Educational Architecture Therapy: the systematicanalysis of how an individual may responsibly exerciseconstitutionally based power in order to fulfill a personal or familymember need in the face of societal indifference, neglect orhostility. This practical question of obtaining equity for theindividual from society's organizations and institutions throughself-effort is the cornerstone of Educational Architecture Therapy.Mr. Bridges develops these themes in four essays and a delightfulprefabricated interview, portraying the step by step journey ofBridges; gifted and talent daughter from recognition of giftedness toenrollment in college. The reader learns how the Bridges worked withlocal schools, state departments of education, state attorneysgeneral, courts, colleges, universities, and other institutions tochange educational traditions blocking Laura's movement through herlocal school system in accordance with her intellectual capabilities. The fun and excitement of the book is how the Bridges had to playcatch-up with Laura's educational needs in a public schoolenvironment. The genius of the book is that this family with limitedmeans and limited community and educational resources was able toprovide this kind of educational facilitation for Laura. The book'snon-scholarly "how-to" format conveys Bridges parental-extended familyfocussed philosophy to its most inclusive audience while emphasizingtrust and communication with parents and extended family members atall socio-economic levels. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
I really enjoyed this book but it does get a bit heavy into the local politics at times. It was written in 1977 but the age doesn't affect it too much.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book to Treasure!
I just loved this book.I have been in my "New York mode" for quite some time, just living in the great city vicariously!Wish I could move back there, but can't afford it!A beautiful book, I highly recommend it.Beautiful pictures of the bridges and their history.A lovely look at New York's treasures.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject
The photos and subject coverage are first rate, the writing style is workmanlike and effective, so if you are interested in bridge architecture and New York City history, this book is a must-have.I would have liked a bit less coverage of how the brisges constructions were finanaced, and more on the actual building process.Nevertheles, I really enjoyed this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Pleasure To Read
Don't let the title fool you, this is not an engineering book. Rather, it is a pleasant history of the construction and importance of many of New York City's most important bridges. As everyone already knows, New York City is world-famous for its many impressive skyscrapers, but without its equally impressive bridges the city as we know it today could not exist. The narrative is detailed enough to give the reader a solid base of information about each span, but you don't need an engineering degree to understand this material. And all the added photos and illustrations help even more. If you are interested in what makes New York such a vibrant city you have to learn about its bridges as well as its buildings. This book is a wonderful way to do that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly researched history. A classic for pontists.
This is a reissue by Dover of a classic history and exhibit book. Covers all the major bridges in the New York City area. For both the casually interested and the specialist, the author has mined volumes of engineering periodicals and original records to cover not only the well known crossings such as the Brooklyn, TriBorough and George Washington bridges but also the lesser known aqueduct bridges over the Harlem River between the Bronx and Manhattan, and the railroad bridges; structures not usually featured in postcards and tour books because they do not present spectacular and soaring vistas against the sky. Yet still worthy of admiration for their engineering features.
Worthy addition to the collection of a pontist. ... Read more

Product Description
A classic in children's non-fiction -- now in paper.

John Roebling had a dream.

He would build the world's longest bridge and he would build it in a new way. But his way was too new. It took 15 years to convince people it would work. And then, just as construction was to begin, John Roebling was killed in a freak accident.

That should have been the end of the story of The Brooklyn Bridge. Instead, it was the beginning. For John wasn't the only Roebling who could dream.

'The Brooklyn Bridge' is about a legendary feat of engineering and an extraordinary family. Through rare, historical photographs, informative diagrams, and powerful illustrations, we learn exactly how this magnificent bridge was designed and constructed. From the Roeblings, we learn of loyalty, courage, sacrifice, and commitment.

'The Brooklyn Bridge' is the story of a bridge across a great river and a bridge across generations, a bridge of stone and steel and one of the human spirit.

Wonders of the World series

The winner of numerous awards, this series is renowned for Elizabeth Mann's ability to convey adventure and excitement while revealing technical information in engaging and easily understood language. The illustrations are lavishly realistic and accurate in detail but do not ignore the human element. Outstanding in the genre, these books are sure to bring even the most indifferent young reader into the worlds of history, geography, and architecture. ... Read more

This is an extraordinary book, which would make a lovely gift for any child fascinated by bridges - or New York City. Its text is both informative and lively. And the illustrations are as fine. There are original illustrations of both the bridge and the people involved in its building, diagrams that clearly show how the bridge was built (and prevent the author from having to muddy up the text with too many technical details) and historical photos.Truly a creative approach to illustrating an inspiring book.My son, 8, has asked me to find him Elizabeth Mann's other books - she's written one about the pyramids and the Great Wall of China - right away. What a recommendation. ... Product Description
Designed first and foremost to be practical, bridges nevertheless are often breathtaking in their construction, combining function and aesthetics. The historic spans of theEvergreen State’s highways are no exception. These technological wonders are extraordinary by any measure, yet their stories have remained largely unknown.

Conceived by visionary engineers and built by anonymous skilled workmen, Washington’s highway bridges are amazing triumphs of design and play a significant role in the state’s history. Several, at the time of their completion, attracted worldwide attention and the praise of professional engineers, influencing the course of bridge construction.

In their quest to compile the first comprehensive history of the state’s highway bridges, the authors exhaustively researched the extensive records of the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), collecting definitive documentation and photographs from across the state. This magnificent book, including more than 200 illustrations, represents the culmination of years of study by many individuals associated with WSDOT and the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (Olympia). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Spanning Washington: Historic Highway Bridges Of The Evergreen State
An excellent summary of the various types of structures used in Washington bridges down through the years.Specific locations and history given for each major bridge. Not a structural engineering text, but should be read by any northwest civil engineering type.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Fascinating Study of Washington Bridges
I've got to say that the first thing that came to mind when I saw this book on Washington's Bridges was the famous 'Galloping Gertie' bridge at Tacoma Narrows that fell down. Then I thought of the floating bridges that the folk at the Department of Transportation seem to like. I would have been disappointed if these bridges hadn't been included in this book. But they were, along with a bunch of other bridges that have failed also. One failed when a herd of sheep crossed it. Another when fireworks set it on fire. Earthquakes and the eruption of Mt. St. Helens caused more to fail. Then there was the one where a forty ton logging truck attempted to cross a bridge designed for a five ton load.

But enough about failed bridges. This is really a book on the hundreds of other bridges around the State of Washington. Some of these are magnificant structures. A lot are surprisingly different, one bridge for instance that was bought war surplus. And I didn't realize that there were still three wooden covered bridges in the state.

This is mostly a picture book, with just enough technical description as to the types of bridges to make it even more interesting. A lot of these bridges would make a good weekend excursion trip to go see. If you're interested in this sort of thing, this is a most interesting book. It's one that I intend to take along on vacations to tell us a bit about where we are going. ... Read more

Product Description
The new research institute for 300 international scientists in the "Biopolis" Dresden provides the ideal frame for the convergence of avant-garde architecture, contemporary art and progressive science.

How do cells divide? How do they communicate? How do they grow into a living organism? For such research the renowned Finnish architects Heikkinen-Komonen, who built the acclaimed Finnish embassy in Washington, created a "place where the postgenomic age can begin" (Die Zeit). Complex structures and subtle colour effects provide a contrast to the clinical coolness on the border between technology and life.

George Steinmann, an artist from Berne, has been active for more than fifteen years in northern Europe, Canada and Switzerland. He has combined the procedures of natural science with various media to form this artistic project "metalogue", integrating cellular and genetic processes to form striking visual art. In large format illustrations and texts by internationally renowned authors, the gentle bridges between the different disciplines are investigated. ... Read more

Product Description
Fog, tide, ice, and human error--before the American Revolution those who ventured to cross the vast Hudson Valley waterway did so on ferryboats powered by humans, animals, and even fierce winds. Before that war, not a single Hudson River bridge or tunnel had been built. It wasn't until Americans looked to the land in the fight for independence that the importance of crossing the river efficiently became a subject of serious interest, especially militarily. Later, the needs of a new transportation system became critical--when steam railroads first rolled along there was no practical way to get them across the water without bridges.

Crossing the Hudson continues this story soon after the end of the war, in 1805, when the first bridge was completed. Donald E. Wolf simultaneously tracks the founding of the towns and villages along the water's edge and the development of technologies such as steam and internal combustion that demanded new ways to cross the river. As a result, innovative engineering was created to provide for these resources.

From hybrid, timber arch, and truss bridges on stone piers to long-span suspension and cantilevered bridges, railroad tunnels, and improvements in iron and steel technology, the construction feats that cross the Hudson represent technical elegance and physical beauty. Crossing the Hudson reveals their often multileveled stories--a history of where, why, when, and how these structures were built; the social, political, and commercial forces that influenced decisions to erect them; the personalities of the planners and builders; the unique connection between a builder and his bridge; and the design and construction techniques that turned mythical goals into structures of utility and beauty. ... Product Description

Few symbols of America's transportation past are as popular or evoke as much nostalgia as covered bridges. While several regional histories and guidebooks exist, no general history of the subject in America has been written in the past 20 years. This engaging historical chronology of covered bridges past and present and located across the United States celebrates a quickly vanishing touchstone of rural Americana. The author explains the origin of covered bridges beginning in 1805 before continuing through the "classic era" (1830-1920) and the structure's gradual downfall from 1950 to 1980. Along the way, readers learn of architectural styles and structural types, and discussions of their cultural significance in rural communities. The text is accompanied by color photography of centuries-old structures culled from the author's 35-year-old collection, as well as by photos from state and regional archives.
