Product Description
In the early 1900s, British Columbia embarked on a brief but intense effort to manufacture a modern countryside. The government wished to reward veterans of the Great War with new lives: soliders and other settlers would benefit from living in a rural community, considered a more healthy and moral alternative to urban life. But the fundamental reason for the land resettlement project was the rise of progressive or "new liberal" thinking, as reformers advocated an expanded role for the state in guaranteeing the prosperity and economic security of its citizens.

This ideological shift pushed the government to intervene directly in the management of not only society but also the natural environment. As most arable, accessible land in British Columbia was already being farmed by 1919, the state had to undertake environmental engineering projects on a scale not yet attempted in the province. Creating a Modern Countryside examines how this process unfolded, identifies its successes and failures, and demonstrates how the human-environment relationship of the early twentieth century shaped the province we live in today. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars good, but only covers common species. no keys to genus/sp
Good photographs, but these alone are not adequate to allow identification of many of the species described. Since most distinguishing characteristics of related species are described in terms of "less than" or "more than" the species photographed, and since you often can't see those characters in the photograph, it is often difficult to use this field guide to distinguish between related species. Product Description
The Yukon is in the northwestern corner of Canada. The sparsely populated territory abounds with natural scenic beauty, with snowmelt lakes and perennial whitecapped mountains, including many of Canada's highest mountains. Although the climate is arctic and subarctic and very dry, with long cold winters, the long sunshine hours in the short summer allow a profusion of flowers and fruit to blossom. Most of the territory is boreal forest, tundra being the main vegetation zone only in the extreme north and at high elevations. The world's largest non-polar icefield, the Kluane icefields is mostly in the Yukon. The territory is about the shape of a right triangle, bordering the American state of Alaska to the west, the Northwest Territories to the east and British Columbia to the south. The Yukon covers 482,443 square kilometres, of which 474,391 km² is land and 8,052 km² is water. It is bounded on the south by the 60th parallel of latitude. Its northern coast is on the Beaufort Sea. Its western boundary is 141 degrees west longitude. ... Read more

Product Description
Here is history from a geographical viewpoint! For the first time, many of the old maps of British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest have been gathered together ina single book, creating an atlas of antique maps that tell a continuing story of theexpanding frontier of knowledge about the region.

The Historical Atlas of British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest is a unique collection of over 320 original maps of explorers and navigators from four centuries of voyages and overland treks of exploration and discovery to the northwest coast, plus native maps, and a host of others selected for their interest or historical significance.

There are imaginary and speculative maps, old political boundary maps, boundary dispute maps, military and spy maps, bird s eye maps, gold rush maps, railway maps and Hudson s Bay Company maps. All are reproductions of hand-drawn or contemporary engraved originals. The maps are combined with context-setting history, explanations of how the maps came to be drawn, and the history behind them.

Here are the maps of Spanish, British, Russian, American, French and other explorers who literally put the Pacific Northwest on the map -Francis Drake, Vitus Bering and Alexei Chirikov, James Cook, Juan Francisco Bodega y Quadra, Alejandro Malaspina, Dionisio Galiano, George Vancouver, Alexander Mackenzie, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, David Thompson, Charles Wilkes, John Charles Fremont, and many others. In drawingtheir maps, these explorers and mapmakers helped fill in geographical knowledge of one of the last remaining gaps in the map of the world.

A unique and stunning new perspective on the history of British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest.

The Historical Atlas of British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest contains high quality reproductions of 335 original maps, with over 235 covering the territory which is now British Columbia. Of the 335 old maps, 180 are in colour and 155 in (usually original) black and white; there are 60 other illustrations, including modern colour photographs and black and white historical photographs and engravings; 27 are in colour, 33 in black and white. The book is printed on acid-free Japanese matt art paper, for a beautiful and enduring addition to your library. 208 pages, 12.75 x 9.5inches (324 x 241 mm) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and lots of fun
I have quite a few other historical atlases, and this one is one of my favorites. One attraction is that it's focused on the northwest US, where I live. Even without the local interest I still think I'd like the book though.

Unlike a typical historical atlas, this book collects historical maps, rather than using modern maps to illustrate historical events. In the accompanying text, it tells stories about the explorers who created the maps.

The book flap text is a good summary of the contents, not just empty marketing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and lots of fun
I have other historical atlases, but this one is my favorite. For onething, it covers the area where I live, but even without the local interestit's great. Instead of drawing broad historical themes on modern maps, likemost historical atlases do, this book collects historical maps, showing howpeople through history thought the world looked. In addition to the manyinteresting historical maps, there are lots of interesting stories aboutthe people who created the maps.

The stuff in the book flap text and theexcerpt isn't just hype -- the book really is as good as it sounds. ... Read more

Product Description
In this updated edition of Treaty Talks in British Columbia, Christopher McKee traces the origins and development of treaty negotiations in the province. Through an examination of Native concerns, he analyzes conflicting points of view and suggests alternatives for achieving consensus.

The new edition includes:

- an overview of the Supreme Court of Canada's 1997 decision in Delgamuukw, and the impact of that ruling on Native peoples' bargaining power and on government policy initiatives;- a review of the Nisga'a Final Agreement and the main criticisms of the deal;- a discussion of the main components of the Sechelt Agreement-in-Principle, and whether or not the agreement can guarantee certainty in land tenure regimes; and- an analysis of the treaty-making process in the 21st century, focusing on the implications of a change in government in Victoria, territorial overlap among First Nations' treaty settlement lands, and the costs of treaty-making in the post-Nisga'a era.

The second edition of Treaty Talks in British Columbia offers significant insights into an ongoing controversial topic. ... Read more
