Editorial Review Product Description TOPICS COVERED: The CD includes all of the plug-ins discussed in the Netscape andActiveX chapters of the book. You'll need a PC running Windows 95 anda browser (Netscape 4.0, Internet Explorer 4.0, AOL etc.) to use theseplug-ins.Some plug-ins may have other system requirements which willbe outlined in the installation instructions. Taking a chatty and nontechnicalapproach, Kirk describes what plug-ins do and discusses how averageusers can employ them to make Web browsing more fun, and how Web-siteowners can use them to make life easier and more productive forthemselves, their visitors, and their customers. She also covers theuse of plug-ins on corporate intranets as well as on theInternet. Her case studies of how various people are using plug-intechnology are eye-opening idea generators. Kirk clears up theconfusion over the difference between Netscape-style plug-ins andMicrosoft Internet Explorer ActiveX controls and then offersinsightful reviews of the leading software in both formats. Kirkincludes a valuable chapter on plug-ins for alternate browsers, suchas the old browser technology many still use on America Online andCompuServe. The enclosed CD-ROM contains her top recommended plug-insfor both Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer as well as links tosites featuring more options. -- Elizabeth Lewis Customer Reviews (6)
Excellent book, even better price I have two older computers and my father has one too that had older browsers. We were having a hard time finding anyone who would provide us with help on them and many of the new verions of software just don't work right with old browsers. The real world examples I loved and although most of the links are now outdated, I had no trouble finding most of the software I needed. More suprising, I had problems with one product and thought I'd email the author, not thinking she would write back! Not only did she answer all my questions, but gave me some great tips on a windows problem I was having. Excellent book and fantastic author. Wish I could give it more stars.
Answered so many questions I enjoyed the breezy, chatty style of writing. It made me feel like the author was right there answering all of my questions. One of the best sections is where they talk about how different people are using different plug-ins to solve problems. Excellent.
Great book. Reviewers should read the book before commenting Seems as if the last reviewer wanted to personally attack the author, not the book. Read the free chapter yourself to see how well written and complete this book is.
Great book. Ignore the previous review My title above relates to the woman (kellytools) who wrote the review. She had a vendetta against the author and took it out on her in this review, without having read the book, nor knowing anything about the author. You might want to check out the Seller Resources Soapbox if you're curious.

Very good - easy to follow, easy to understand format
Very disappointed with its content. My questions were answered using both Netscape Help and postingquestions at Deja. I cannot recommend this book and I feel that the moneywould be better spent on pizza while your questions are being answered bythe helpful people in JavaScript user groups. ... Read more |

18. Real World Web Services by Will Iverson | |

Editorial Review Product Description The core idea behind Real World Web Services is simple: after years of hype, what are the major players really doing with web services? Standard bodies may wrangle and platform vendors may preach, but at the end of the day what are the technologies that are actually in use, and how can developers incorporate them into their own applications? Those are the answers Real World Web Services delivers. It's a field guide to the wild and wooly world of non-trivial deployed web services. The heart of the book is a series of projects, demonstrating the use and integration of Google, Amazon, eBay, PayPal, FedEx, and many more web services. Some of these vendors have been extremely successful with their web service deployments: for example, eBay processes over a billion web service requests a month! The author focuses on building 8 fully worked out example web applications that incorporate the best web services available today. The book thoroughly documents how to add functionality like automating listings for auctions, dynamically calculating shipping fees, automatically sending faxes to your suppliers, using an aggregator to pull data from multiple news and web service feeds into a single format or monitoring the latest weblog discussions and Google searches to keep web site visitors on top of topics of interest-by integrating APIs from popular websites most people are already familiar with. For each example application, the author provides a thorough overview, architecture, and full working code examples. This book doesn't engage in an intellectual debate as to thecorrectnessof web services on a theological level.Instead, it focuses on the practical, real world usage of web services as the latest evolution in distributed computing, allowing for structured communication via Internet protocols. As you ll see, this includes everything from sending HTTP GET commands to retrieving an XML document through the use of SOAP and various vendor SDKs.
