3-0 out of 5 stars Good for seeing an implementation of ASP, but otherwise...
The best reason to read "Building Professional Web Sites", I think, is to see a thorough example of how Active Server Pages can be used to make a web site "dynamic". But you'll need to know somethingof ASP before you begin.

In addition to ASP, the book explains all of theother steps in building the example web site (viewable atwww.theblowhole.com), but it overtreats the simpler material and glossesover the complex. For example, there are pages and pages of figuresshowing what are basically the same installation screens for each piece ofsoftware you'll be using; meanwhile, VBScript code, used in ASP, is oftenput forth as if its purpose and mechanism is obvious. "VisualInterdev" is one of the "tools" the book requires, yet itsfunction is far from obvious. The program is ostensibly for creating ASPpages, but ASP code is never presented in the context of using the Interdevsoftware. Finally, the preface, having almost nothing to do with the restof the book, goes on about programming nostalgia, and is tangential enoughto scare off an earnest beginner.

There is "something foreveryone" here, but that's not a good thing, because you're paying foreveryone else's portion :-). Who, then, is the target reader? This is, as awhole, _definitely_ not for beginners with no programming knowledge, andadvanced users will find much of the book extraneous (how to install yoursoftware, how to make graphic icons in a paint program).Intermediatereaders like me get the most benefit, in terms of the number of subjectswhich are at our level.

Rated "Three stars" since the book hasa fairly grand mission to live up to, and though I find the problems quiteglaring, it is not "poor" by any means.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money on this one!
Worst book on web development I've ever purchased! Don't waste your money on it.. I glanced through the book once and tossed it on the shelf and never picked it up agian. It jumps from subject to subject never throughlycovering anything. If you need a book on web development, select booksby Wrox Press or O'Reilly. nuf said.Well... AMAZON how do I give it ZEROSTARS?

1-0 out of 5 stars I am speechless.
I am on page 153, and I am speechless.I am angry at the publisher Prentice Hall for not upholding better technical standards and editing. My opinion of Prentice Hall has been severely damaged after reading this book. Finally, I rebuke the authors for their misleading self-promotion on thissite.Readers such as myself deserve to spend our money on qualitytechnical literature.Your work is an insult to your readers' intelligenceand common sense.

Yes, perhaps one should not get so frustrated oremotional over a book. But I am angry and here are my reasons:

(1)When I first read this book I was uneducated about web design and myconfusion over this book's points I attributed to my ignorance; however, Inow realize that this book is majorly flawed.Where to begin? It begins,"You can develop a Web site. You can do it! Yes, YOU! ...I'm going toshow you how..."So, here I am, prepared for the author to hold myhand through the process. Now, if you will, jump to page 114 and, he'stalking about "Normalizing a database."Not just talking aboutthis... on page 100 he's talking about ASP "scope."Ok, yourebut and that say I'm slow on the uptake.Ok, then why are you teachingFrontpage 98!And then jumping to ASP and Normalization! But it getsbetter... so I'm digging into Access database normalization... and then 14pages later, you are telling me the difference between Gif and JPEGS! andhow to optimize them!

Come on authors, whom are you addressing with thisbook! You imply this book is direct towards a general audience and thenyou frequently digress into the most esoteric illustrations of complextopics.

Lastly, to those would be readers of this book, consider page93."That ends our software installation. We also need the Javaclasses for our rotating banner ad.You'll find the code for that at ourWeb site (see Appendix A)."

I thought I was buying the book so thatI could read the code printed! And commented upon! And why are youeven making me go to an Appendix to find the name of your WebSite!

Boy, I can't wait for the second edition of this bookguys!Maybe you'll tell me about the wizards in Frontpage 97 in the year2001!

5-0 out of 5 stars IE 5: an overview with practice examples
Excellent! Relevant visuals depicting the screens you should see on your computer. I found the sections on newsgroups, and subscribing to them very helpful. The book has a unique spine that allows the book to lay flatwithout shredding the glue that holds it together. Buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A variety of users can benefit from this books' instruction.
With no end in sight for the comet-like pace of technological advances, methods of efficiency rush towards extinction faster than a pop star's career. In terms of Internet fluency, this is especially the case. In orderto keep up, some need a guided tour down the Superhighway, while otherssimply need a point in the right direction. Therein lies the beauty ofMicrosoft Press' "Internet Explorer 5: Step by Step."

Equippedwith both Internet Explorer 5 installation software and practice files onCD-ROM, "Internet Explorer 5: Step by Step" offers instruction toprovide the novice through upper-intermediate users with the toolsnecessary to navigate the Internet's many waterways. For the expert user,it offers eloquent explanations of the newest features of this version ofExplorer and customization techniques to promote optimum efficiency andenjoyment. For example, "Internet Explorer 5: Step by Step"provides basic and helpful ways to find and manage information on theInternet, but also how to collaborate on the Internet using the NetMeetingfunction. "Internet Explorer 5: Step by Step" is accessible toall, though. Upon entering the book, one is not made to wade throughinformation already attained. Rather, the first section, "Finding YourBest Starting Point," guides you to appropriate sections of the bookto further your understanding of Explorer instead of encouragingredundancy.

Edited by ActiveEducation, the format is incrediblyuser-friendly with well-outlined steps as well as reviews and practiceexercises for each task just learned concluding each lesson. Sprinkled withtips along the way, each lesson is presented in a logical order withrealistic graphics to simulate what one will encounter when engaging in theparticular function(s) of that lesson.

If you are upgrading from Explorer4, "Internet Explorer 5: Step by Step" is the most helpful way tooptimize the base of information you already know, then take that knowledgea step further to incorporate the upgraded and new features, making themwork for you. There is, however, no reason for intimidation for the novice. If you have never used a browser, "Internet Explorer 5: Step byStep" will guide you from the most basic to the most advancedfunctions to make your Internet experience a success.-- Ian Hartnett ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this book...
This book is full of errors.
The code does not work.
I have already worked through the VB and C# step by step books and have to say there were excellent. This book is not even close and is not fit to sit alongside the other books i have mentioned.
Very angry.
Just want a book that is fit for purpose.

4-0 out of 5 stars Visual Web Developer 2008 sbs review
The book is fairly well written, however, there is a difference of opinion on their chapter on using Master Pages. If you use their code(download code), it works, if you're like me and like to type in the code as well as create the project to see how it's done, it doesn't work the way they describe it to work. Otherwise, the book is a great intro book to the technology. To learn Visual Web Developer 2008, or any other version as a matter of that fact, I would buy the book again.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst book ever! MicrosoftPress fire your editor!
I was at first excited to start developing asp web sites so, as in the past with other project I chose a MicrosoftPress book because they are well written and have great content.I breased through the first six chapters only to find that the Virtual Earth integration, chapter 7, was out of date.Version 6.2 is the current supported version and since they have changed the API no matter what you do you can not get it to stay in the defined table.

That didn't deture me too much the web changes fast so on to the next chapter.

Chapter 8 has you linking SQL tables!Way cool!!!But if you don't stop and continue on to chapter 8 you will run into some odd issues because they omit the fact you must refresh the database table prior to creating your qureys. The methods will not show up otherwise.

Chapter 9 Listing 9-5: DataSourceID="ObjectDataSource1" be sure to add DataKeyNames="ToDoId" at the end of the line or it won't work at all. And again the omit the database table refresh.AsloDataView is DetailsView, pg 182, and step 6 be sure to choose DataSource from the dropdown; select the DataSource ObjectDataSource1 and check off Emable Inserting from the Add new To-do table.Getting very frusturated!!!!!!

Chapter 10 was a breath of fresh air, it was fine.

Chapter 11 however... Don't bother, Microsoft discontinued the[...]site back in August 24th 2009.

Chapter 12 was fine.

Chapter 13 well, I skipped it, I do this every day.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for Beginners
The book is OK for someone that already has some experience programming. I think a book for beginners should include, near the beginning, a portion about commenting, and how to write readable code by indenting, seperating blocks of code, capitalization, using meaningful names (lblLastName instead of Label1) etc. I'm pretty sure I would have become frustrated and given up if I hadn't had some prior C++ training. I learned a lot from the book, it's just that I have found other books a lot better for beginners.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Editing
This book has two issues which to me make it not a book worth buying.(Unfortunatly I already did!) 1. The webpage example that he shows you how to make is a very dated looking webpage and does not reflect current trends in web development.2. (the big issue) is that his code does not work.He will tell you to type some code, problem is, the code doesn't work.

FYI: I am an IT professional (and am wanting to learn some web development), and was able to figure my way through about half of the book, but do not think it was worth it, and I gave up on it.I've ordered another book that had better reviews.

If you are considering buying this book, my suggestion is to look somewhere else. ... Read more

Product Description

What began as an intrepid U.S. Government initiative in the early 1970's has turned into a global way of life.Indeed, with more than 500 million current users (and counting), the Internet has revolutionized the way societies function the world over. From dating and shopping online, to conducting informational research, to communicating via email, today seemingly everyone uses the Internet for one purpose or another. How, then, can something so vast and powerful be defiled by something as trivial as spam?

It's true. The fact remains that despite the leading-edge technological sophistication fueling the Net, there are still many related annoyances that complicate and tarnish the Internet experience. And it doesn't matter if you're a homemaker in search of a fresh chicken recipe, or a civil engineer researching plans for a new skyscraper, the problems are the same.

Internet Annoyances understands the universal nature of the Internet and strives to make its use as stress-free as possible. This insightful guide shows you how to overcome the most annoying Internet-related quirks, bugs, and hassles. You'll learn how to make a seamless connection, thwart would-be hackers, ensure greater security while surfing, eliminate pop-up ads, maximize online services, conduct more effective Google searches, better utilize digital media (music and video), and much more.

In addition, Internet Annoyances discusses how to design and host a personal web site something once thought of as only possible for the technically gifted. Topics like blogs, domain names, setup, HTML, fonts, and graphics and are all dissected and analyzed for easy consumption.

Unlike other books on the subject, Internet Annoyances assumes readers already possess a working knowledge of the Internet.By fully recognizing the experience level of today's Internet culture, author Preston Galla is able to cut immediately to the chase and not waste time on the more obvious points. Internet Annoyances, therefore, is a quick read that presents succinct solutions for the many glitches that still populate the Internet experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Ideas
Originally I got this book from my local public library. It was packed with so many great ideas I decided to get a copy for my personal library.Great idea book!

4-0 out of 5 stars still informative even after two years

I read this book two years after it came out. Surprisingly, there are only a few out-of-date items (dead urls, new Google features, Internet Explorer 7 now has tabs..). There's still quite a lot of useful, relevant information in it. It's worth at least a loan from the library.

The sections I personally learned something new from were the fixes to Privacy Annoyances and the Shopping Annoyances (warning about restocking fees at online electronics stores).

Althought it's true you can google for solutions to a problem, this is worth having as a handy reference because it's a big help if, say, you're having issues getting connected to the Internet in the first place. And all the solutions are categorized already, so all you have to do is flip to the relevant chapter instead of wading through search-engine results.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes the Internet Makes Me Go &*%^*&*&&^%!
How many times have you gone online to only get frustrated? Web sites do not work the way you think they should. How many times have you had problems with your computer or wireless connection, and have no idea why? Do you have a website and often wonder who is linking to you? Does your email client drive you batty? It is these things and more that drive Internet Annoyances (256 Pages, O'Reilly, 2005, ISBN 0596007353) by Preston Gralla.

Laid out like a text book, Gralla attempts to cover a wide range of topics in a condensed space. For the most part, he succeeds. Where I get lost is that it is such a whirlwind that jumps from one topic to another, which can be disconcerting. But you know what? That's OK, because there is a lot to be aware of, especially as technology matures. The book satisfied my need to learn at least one new think from a book, and I learned a few. What did I learn? Extra ways to protect a wireless router that I was not aware of. I learned how to find hidden products on E-Bay (the book does not mention that sellers are also now taking advantage of this human error trick. Gralla also does a good job, at a high level, of covering pop-ups, spam, instant messaging and more.

While this book is not on my "must read" recommendation list, you will not be disappointed if you buy it. And it is also a good book to pass along to people looking for quick guidance. This means it will not make you an expert, but will open you to new knowledge and experiences.

Anyone who has been surfing the Internet knows that around every corner there is always something new and exciting. "Internet Annoyances" is one of those things, a cyberspace goldmine book that is loaded with far too many tips and tricks for Internet travelers to mention here. Preston Gralla is an author of more than 30 books about the Internet and computing, as well he was the founding editor of PC/Computing. He helped establish ZDNet online service and now he shares these experiences in this fascinating book.

Preston Gralla spent years collecting emails about annoying issues that Internet users have complained about and turned these problems into solutions. This book is organized into 10 chapters covering various aspects of computering problems and their solutions: Email and Spam, Making the Connection, Wireless, Web Hosting / Design and Blogs, Browsers, AOL, Instant Messaging, Searching Annoyances, Security, and Shopping / Auction annoyances. This book is deigned for you to flip about looking for those computer annoyances that irritate you the most. Of course, if you have a specific problem you can easily find a solution in the well-organized Index at the back of the book.

The pages are loaded with tons of screen shots identifying the specific topics, along with the problem stated and "The Fix" where you will be led systematic in a correction process that is easy to follow. Along with the screenshots, there are many highlighted features of both manufacturers programs and links to many free programs. A lot of the time these work just as well, if not better than those you have to pay for do. To take you a bit farther there are periodic "tip" boxes that help explain why you need to do this certain action, thus helping you learn more about the Internet and its various aspects of use. For instance, in the Security chapter you are given warnings and solutions about how to "Block Snooping Neighbours", "Spoofed Emails", "Phishing Expeditions", and of course a great section on Adware and Spyware, Trojans / Worms and Viruses. In the Shopping and Auction chapter you will learn about the various frauds such as identity theft and how to prevent it, faster form filling, and many Ebay tips.

Anyone who has a wireless setup at home, or for those who travel and use public WIFI access, Chapter 3: Wireless Annoyances is a must read. This section leads you into safe surfing and gives you step-by-step tips on how to secure your system from hackers and how to stop "BANDWIDTH VAMPIRES". You will also learn how to boost your signals, extend your wireless range, and find those hotspots while on the road.

This book is great for those who are just heading out on their first adventure into the World Wide Web, and for those who want to take their adventures to the next level. As the author points out, "Don't expect to read this book straight through from cover-to-cover. It's best to jump around, first solving those annoyances that annoy you the most, then discovering other annoyances you can head off at the pass." It pays to be aware out there on the World Wide Web, and this book does just that for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars some annoyances are dangerous
For most of us, a huge value of our computers is being able to hook to the Internet. This once science fictional dream has now become an everyday reality. Alas, as this book mentions, such a reality also includes many annoying problems.

One way to read this book is to divide those annoyances into two groups. The first group is the little things, like tweaking the various Microsoft Office products. The second group of annoyances can be more troublesome. Like viruses/worms and spam. Malware.

Consider spam. The universal scourge. The book has a good, quick discussion of the main antispam techniques, like Bayesians or hashing. Plus advice that is a little cynical, but realistic. Like how the Can Spam act has largely proved useless. Or how you should not use naughty words in your outgoing email, to minimise chances of it being tagged as spam by your recipient's email provider.

Hotspots are also discussed heavily, due to their popularity and often insecure mode of operation. There is a great danger of someone running a packet sniffer. So your key communications should use https, if you are engaged in sensitive matters, like using your credit card. But the book does not go into how a phisher could launch a deadlier man in the middle attack. Where she replaces the hot spot device with her own, or subverts the device's software. Then, she runs a pocket universe, where she might have copied the websites of various banks, and she directs http queries to those banks to her fake websites [pharms]. This method totally negates https. Granted, it is technically quite hard to do and so is still somewhat uncommon. But the book should warn of it, if you want to stay ahead of the curve. ... • All books in this series are built with the same pedagogical structure, designed to be used separately or in sets.

  • All books are two-color & spiral bound for easy use and reference while working at the computer. All titles work for software across hardware platforms—both Mac and Windows.
While many technically-minded individuals prefer to write HTML and XML code to build web pages, an increasing number of business and design professionals are turning to Microsoft's FrontPage. A powerful page design and site development tool, FrontPage, a part of the Office suite, provides tools for rapid deployment of complex Web solutions. Beginning with the basic interface, and moving on to the inclusion of forms, interactive content, rich media, e-commerce technologies and more, this ATC book provides a means for a beginning web designer or experienced site manager to learn this complex and powerful development tool. The reader will - by the end of the book - have a thorough and complete knowledge of using FrontPage to develop, publish, and maintain the most complex of Web sites.

Ellenn Behoriam is the President and founder of Against The Clock, which has its roots in on-site training in many of the nation's leading publishing, design, prepress and printing companies.
