5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for re-focus on the job
I read this book at a point where I was frustrated with my career after 17 years in my industry. This book helped me to refocus and encouraged me in my work. I found the book easy to read. There were questions and points for discussion for use in a class environment. For me it was a leisure read and it was really great. If you like this book, then I'd recommend sermons by Barbara Brown Taylor - another author who can helps me stay focused on what matters. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Different than the picture.
The product is different than what is showed on the picture. When it came it had an EEE (Eastern Economy Edition) mark on the top right corner. It also looks like a photocopy of the original. The content is correct, but it is black and white. The book that everyone in my class have it has colored pages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Honest Seller
The book was used and slightly worn but it served the purpose. The seller was honest about the condition and that's what love.I would definitely order from them again.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
Every purchaser is looking for exactly what they ordered in the condition it was listed. That is exactly what I received.I would order from this seller every time based on my experience.

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful
This textbook, which we used in our MBA ethics class last semester, is unfit for use as a teaching tool.Velasquez is more proselyte than professor; he reverse-engineers his conclusions from political positions, and he ignores data that do not comport with his beliefs.Throughout the book, he displays an astounding misunderstanding of some basic, accepted principles of economics--including the law of supply! (p. 169-170).

The book is fairly well-written and uses current examples, so the student without a grounding in economics will probably find his explanations convincing.

Laura Hartman's: Perspectives in Business Ethics offers a foundation in ethical thought, followed by a variety of perspectives on difficult ethical dilemmas in both the personal and professional context. This anthology encourages the reader to "critically evaluate each perspective using his or her own personal ethical theory base."Instructors who favor an interactive, discussion-oriented approach to the ethics course will appreciate the different perspectives offered by the Hartman text. This book incorporates the traditional text with definitions and explanations, and combines it with short and long cases, reprints of both traditional and innovative articles, and nontraditional materials such as song lyrics, excerpts from classical literature, and short stories. This text focuses on involving as many views as possible in ethical situations or decisions. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Business Ethics was never so interesting
Perspectives in Business Ethics gives a good combination of the principles involved and the practical application of those principles. The firms that are used as case studies are very timely. Most people will recognize the firms and the issues that the firms are dealing with. This was a good text to study a very sensitive subject and the references make sure that the reader can do additional research.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very well done.
The positives of this book are many. Most importantly, it is very well-organized compared to some of the other business ethics books I've read.Specifically, Hartman begins by introducing various ethical theories and strategies for ethical decision-making.She also covers ethical leadership, business and social responsibility, employee-employer relations, marketing, finance/accounting, and finally, the ethical implications of technology.By proceeding from general principles to specific cases, her approach should greatly help students acquire the tools they need to assess particular ethical dilemmas.Very nice. Her summary of each major section should greatly benefit students as well.On the negative side, the selected articles are at times a bit spotty in their coverage of a particular issue. Also, the articles tend to focus on very specific situations (e.g. the Enron debacle) instead of more general ones (e.g. "do businesses have social obligations to their consumers which affect the content and strategy of their marketing efforts?"). While this is fine as far as it goes, it would have been more consonant with Hartman's overall approach for her to include a few articles which address these "big picture" sorts of questions. All in all, this is a very beneficial text for an introductory course in business ethics.I recommend it to students and teachers alike. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A horrible bore that could be condensed to a pamphlet
I'm currently trying to battle through reading this book for my Business Ethics class at AJU.For one, the main meat of the book is only about 250-300 pages, the rest are case studies. The case studies are interesting and thought provoking; the actual text is very lacking in substance.I'm a compulsive highlighter, and in many quality textbooks I highlight 25% of a page of actually useful information--this textbook I find maybe one line every other page that is worthy of noting. The rest is garbage.I'm finding the Stakeholder & Issues Management Approach itself could be explained in a few concise pages. This book could really use more interesting concepts, or be replaced with more case studies.

5-0 out of 5 stars You bailed me out!
After one failed attempt with another bookseller Amazon.com bailed me out just in time for the beginning of class. This textbook was exactly what the instructor ordered us to read. It came fast and in excellent condition, although I paid more; but it was well worth it!

3-0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag.Perhaps too focused for an introduction.
One of the best features of this book is that the introductory chapter argues for the importance of business ethics, and that good ethics is good business. Also, Weiss provides very direct, concrete questions and directives when discussing ethical decision-making.On the negative side, there are no readings. However, simulated case studies are presented, which is helpful.A more serious shortcoming, I think, is that there is precious little discussion of ethical theories in the book.On my view, obtaining at least a general understanding of the more prominent approaches to ethics (e.g. utilitarianism, virtue theory, ethical egoism, moral relativism, etc.) is an essential aspect of any course on business ethics, and a text should reflect this. Finally, the specificity of his approach (i.e. the stakeholder and issues management approach) may put off those who are looking for a broader approach to business ethics. This book may be helpful if used in conjunction with a survey of ethical theory, but it is uneven as a stand-alone text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to business ethics
Excellent text for discussing intermediate level business ethics dilemmas and providing a perspective from which to base arguments for or against a position. ... Read more

Product Description
Hartman/DesJardins is designed to prepare the student to apply an ethical decision-making model, not only in this ethics course but throughout her or his business discipline. This model teaches students ethical skills, vocabulary, and tools to apply in everyday business decisions and throughout their business courses. The authors speak in a sophisticated yet accessible manner while teaching the fundamentals of business ethics.Hartman’s professional background in law and her teaching experience in the business curriculum, combined with DesJardins’ background in philosophy, results in a broad language, ideal for this approach and market. The authors’ goal is to engage the student by focusing on cases and business scenarios that students already find interesting.Students are then asked to look at the issues from an ethical perspective.Additionally, its focus on AACSB requirements makes it a comprehensive business ethics text for business school courses. The goal for the second edition remains the same as for the first: to provide “a comprehensive yet accessible introduction to the ethical issues arising in business.”Hartman and DesJardins have retained the focus on decision-making as well as the emphasis on both personal and policy-level perspectives on ethics. This edition continues to provide pedagogical support throughout the text. The most noticeable changes involve a thorough updating of distinct items such as Reality Checks, Decision Points, and readings to reflect new cases, examples and data. ... Read more

Product Description
"An ethical man is a Christian holding four aces." So said Mark Twain. But practicing Christians, at least, want to be ethical in all areas of life and work--not just when they are holding four aces. To those faced with the many questions and quandaries of doing business with integrity, Alexander Hill offers a place to begin.Alexander Hill carefully explores the foundational Christian concepts of holiness, justice and love. These keys to God's character, he argues, are also the keys to Christian business ethics. Hill then shows how some common responses to business ethics fall short of a fully Christian response. Finally, he turns to penetrating case studies on such pressing topics as employer-employee relations, discrimination and affirmative action, and environmental damage. This is an excellent introduction to business ethics for students and a bracing refresher for men and women already in the marketplace. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for Christians who work in Business
This is such a wonderful book that gives me so much for insights as to how to present God's character in business, which helps your business to prosper.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thought-Provoking Book
I am in graduate school and was assigned to read this book.Happily, I found this book is filled with scripture to back up the author's statements/theories.The mock mini-cases and/or illustrations that were provided in the book were extremely helpful in identifying possible business scenarios that one might encounter and ways to deal with them. The ways suggested to deal with the mock scenarios are always scripture-based and require thought and conviction from the reader.

I really liked the book and recommend it to others.

There is one more thing. This could be viewed as either a positive or a negative.I had to be close to www.dictionary.com because there were numerous words that were unfamiliar. If anyone is like me, if I do not look up the meaning of an unfamiliar word, I risk losing complete understanding of that passage/sentence.Once I looked up word definitions, I comprehended and enjoyed the reading.I must be honest and say that I expected an "easy read" (not having to look up definitions), but it wasn't that bad because (at least) I expanded my vocabulary on top of learning about business, Christian ethics (LOL)!

1-0 out of 5 stars i would not recommend you to read this book
I was assigned to read this book for social religion class. I did not find it very interesting to read. most of the stories are business stereotype. The book itself is very confusing. It seems that it keeps repeating itself- over and over.

5-0 out of 5 stars just business a great look at Christian business

4-0 out of 5 stars interesting discussion of Jewish ethics
In this little book, the author tries to answer the following questions:

1. What's unique about Jewish business ethics, as opposed to secular or utilitarian ethics? Pava addresses three unique principles in Jewish law: (1) the notion of differing levels of responsibility to the needy (that is, that one's obligations to family, employees, etc. take priority over faraway obligations); (2) the principle against "acting in the ways of Sodom"- that one has a duty not to take a maximum profit if another gains and the profit-taker does not lose; and (3) the idea of "acting beyond the letter of the law" (i.e. moral obligations beyond legal requirements).

2. How is Jewish business ethics relevant to a world which is not Jewish? Pava admits that specific Jewish legal rules are not binding upon non-Jews; however, the broader, aspirational values underlying these rules are useful to all businesses because they are "noncoercive, universal and speak directly to current problems."

But it seems to me that there is a trade-off involved: the more distinctive Jewish ethics are, the less universal (and thus the less useful to the broader business world) they might be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jewish Business Ethics as a Guide for Modern Managers
This book provides an excellent introduction to basic principles of Jewish ethics which still have relevance to modern business activity. It contrasts the Jewish approach to business ethics with various secular theories. There is a very cogent defense of corporate social responsibility based on Jewish legal principles. The book, which is very clear and well-written, demonstrates the continuing importance and creativity of Jewish law for both Jewish and non-Jewish managers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating book

Product Description
Business ethics raises many important philosophical issues. A first set of issues concerns the methodology of business ethics. What is the role of ethical theory in business ethics? To what extent, if at all, can thinking in business ethics be enhanced by philosophy, so as to provide real moral guidance? Another set of issues involves questions regarding markets, capitalism, and economic justice. There are related concerns about the nature of business organizations and the responsibilities they have to their members, owners, and society.

The Oxford Handbook of Business Ethics is a comprehensive treatment of the field of business ethics as seen from a philosophical approach. The volume consists of 24 essays that survey the field of business ethics in a broad and accessible manner, covering all major topics about the relationship between ethical theory and business ethics. The chapters are written by accomplished philosophers who offer a systematic interpretation of their topics and discuss various moral controversies and dilemmas that plague business relationships and government-business relationships. Readers are thus presented with the major views that define the topic of the essay with critical discussions of those views, as well as topical bibliographies that identify key works in the field. In addition to philosophers who work in this area, the volume will be of interest to those in business and society seeking an up-to-date resource on this vital field. ... Read more

Product Description
"Describing the aim of the book as an aid to 'increase ethical awareness and sensitivity in myself and in others,' the author does an admirable job on both counts."
--Library Journal

"Experience is a great teacher but only when you are prepared to learn. Buzz McCoy provides lively preparation and insights into the arts of life and leadership. Read and learn."
--George P. Shultz, former U.S. Secretary of State and a Distinguished Fellow at the Hoover Institution

"Leading a successful life, as in leading an organization, requires a person to identify and confront an endless stream of tough, ambiguous questions. This is essential reading for anyone who aspires to both ask the right questions and seek the right answers--answers that ultimately define true character and extend impact beyond me to we."
--Thomas J. Tierney, Chairman and Co-Founder, The Bridgespan Group

Over the past few years, the business world has been wracked by corporate scandals. With news of a new scandal an almost weekly occurrence, one cannot help but wonder: "Is business success synonymous with a lack of morality?"With a resounding "no," Bowen H. "Buzz" McCoy, former partner at Morgan Stanley, shows that ethical business leadership is possible and, moreover, desirable.Seeking inspiration from an eclectic range of sources, such as Dante, Kant, and Peter Drucker, and drawing from his own career as a successful investment banker, the author examines how business leaders--and those who aspire to be business leaders--can flourish in a corporate environment without shedding personal values or compromising integrity.Living Into Leadership:A Journey in Ethics is based on the author's actual life experiences, personal ethical dilemmas, and concerns. This groundbreaking work incorporates classroom materials developed by the author for ethics programs at various business schools, including Stanford, UC Berkeley, the University of Southern California, UCLA, and Notre Dame. The central question this book considers is how to pursue an engaged business career while living a balanced life and continuing to grow as an integrated person.

McCoy acts as a "mentor" for readers, providing personal and professional guidance on the development of a personal business plan for life. The book presents the case for creating a moral compass that allows one to make decisions under uncertainty, lead a life of integrity, establish the practice of ethics both personally and in society, and know when to embrace change and when to hold one's ground. It includes an abbreviated version of the author's acclaimed work, the seminal Harvard Business Review article, "The Parable of the Sadhu," and shows readers how to prepare in advance for dilemmas they may face, both in their private and professional lives. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Review from a non business old man
About 30 years ago I met Buzz McCoy while on a trek in Nepal and we had many interesting conversations.Recently I learned that he had written LIVING INTO LEADERSHIP and out of curiousity read it.The book was written primarily for people in business and the reviews of the book make it clear it is important and groundbreaking.I am 89 years old, and my vocational career was as a ship's officer and later as a research worker at a medical school. The book has opened a window to realms of thought unknown to me and raised fundamental questions about my life, conduct and religious beliefs.Buzz has made me explore new paths of thought. He discusses the questions of one's obligations to work and family. You don't have to be a business person to find much in this book that is interesting and will stimulate your thinking.

Living Into Leadership
A Journey in Ethics

Written by:Bowen H. "Buzz" McCoy

Reviewed by:Ken Riggs
Date: June 8, 2007

Working at and developing who we are and what we want in life comes to us in different stages over our lifetime. The profound questions this book asks of its readers--regardless of the stage in your lifetime--is:Who are you, and what do you want? The first step to answering these questions is for the reader to be open to asking each of these questions of himself or herself. Once each question is answered, Living Into Leadership--A Journey in Ethics offers readers a map to follow as they pursue a wonderful and meaningful journey in life.

Readers are fortunate that Buzz McCoy has so thoughtfully provided this insightful journey into his life from the beginning of his distinguished career to his shift in giving back through his teachings and writings to the world that he so fully embraced. Living Into Leadership is not an autobiography or a book about Buzz the man; rather, it is a series of guided life experiences grounded in friendship, family, religion, and love--all in the pursuit of happiness and a life worth living.

You will learn of a man who has the tremendous amount of courage required to be honest with himself and with those around him, and how this honesty paid handsomely by always allowing him to be true to himself and to build lifelong relationships with colleagues in business settings, spiritual places, and intriguing physical settings. You will read about how Buzz, in his first investment banking interview with Morgan Stanley, suggested that, "If he (the interviewer) had no further questions, we adjourn to the lounge and observe John Glenn on the initial manned space flight." Buzz was not being glib, but was responding to the silence on the part of the interviewer, which made Buzz uncomfortable. (By the way, this interview was the beginning stage of an extremely successful 27-year career at Morgan Stanley.)

When you finish reading Living Into Leadership, you will recognize the profound impact that Buzz has made on the business world, and that his greatest legacy may very well rest in the leadership and ethics that he imparts through this book to generations yet to come. One can almost hear Buzz challenging each of us in a Socratic manner to determine our own legacy through the many opportunities we have to make critical decisions about the quality of life. His words will urge you to be a better person by examining your life with candor and by being willing to make the hard decisions. And make no mistake about it, there are tough decisions in life, such as those described in The Parable of the Sadhu, that capture our willingness to help our fellow man, decide at what level we would agree to help, and realize that these decisions are not as clear as they might appear.

Unlike most of our training that prepares us for financial and accounting issues, management challenges, or administrative processes, Living Into Leadership prepares one for the journey we each take in the pursuit of happiness and in the search for meaning while living out one's deepest personal values. With his wonderful teaching approach, Buzz challenges us to live a deliberate life. He talks of bringing together business relationships that are more than about business; they are about connecting at a human level. He strips away the facades that we build over a lifetime to protect our inner shell to reveal that developing personal moments with our fellow colleagues are some of the most meaningful and humbling moments of life. You will learn of the close relationships and learning experiences Buzz had with business icons such as Trammel Crow. The lesson from Trammel, though the prism of Buzz, is not about real estate investing but of love. Love, as stated by Trammel, is the most important quality that a business leader needs to possess.

Living Into Leadership also shows us that the most glamorous business moments potentially can be overshadowed by the unexpected, such as Buzz drinking home-made beer and eating popcorn in a hut in the Himalaya Mountains with a family that spans three generations, and recognizing there was no other place that one might want to be. Humor and balance as an undertone to life resonate throughout the book, and readers will also enjoy the stories about social graces learned on the job by accidentally eating another person's salad and even being ornery once in awhile.

According to Living Into Leadership, ethics are contextual and experiential. To understand how to live with values and ethics is not just about what we do once in awhile. Rather, values and ethics are a constant state of thinking and doing what one believes is right. In addition, fairness involves being open, consistent, and just. Buzz brings together all these things from many different dimensions and which are carefully crafted from readings published by Dante, Drucker, Bonheoffer, T.S. Eliot, and many others to achieve the following: "Finally, there is the deep level of religious and spiritual growth and formation, of attempting to live out one's deepest values in the workplace, which becomes the source of one's courage and steadfastness when all else seems to fail."

The book also speaks to us about the respect that we have for our parents and how to incorporate that perspective into our own ideology. Buzz is honest about the realities of greatness that we see in others, but at the same time, reminds us that no one is perfect, including our parents. We experience the respect and curiosity that Buzz had for all those with whom he came into contact throughout his life, and Buzz coaches us that there is always an opportunity to go past a surface or allegorical level to a deeper relationship of learning with each situation and person we encounter in life.

The book should be held dear to our hearts and retained throughout one's life as a constant companion to refer to in living a full and complete life. Living Into Leadership can be read in different ways at different times in your life--as a quick perusal, a careful read of selective sections, or a very thorough read of the entire book. In addition, individuals should read this book at three points in their life: right after college; at the midpoint of their career; and, at the end of their career. In keeping with this spirit and advice, I will give a copy of this book to each of my three sons when they graduate from college to allow them to understand that a life lived with deliberate intent is a life worth living; second, this is the perfect book for someone like me at the midpoint of a career to allow for a full appreciation of a life that has so many dimensions in need of polishing but will shine if I chose to work at it; and, finally, everyone should read this book in the August of their career to reflect on a wonderful life--as we all have something to give to the world, as long as we make that intent known to ourselves and work at the relationships around us. Although we may not necessarily have experiences at the level enjoyed by Buzz, we all have rich experiences that run parallel to those described in this book and we have a choice to make life a glorious journey that is uniquely our own.

Buzz concludes Living Into Leadership with a quote from his friend and mentor, John Gardner, as he offers the ingredients for and offers the wish for a life filled with meaning. "....Meaning is something you build into your life...out of your own past, out of your affections and loyalties, out of your experience of humankind as it is passed on to you, out of your own talent and understanding, out of the things you believe in, out of the things and people you love, out of the values for which you are willing to sacrifice something....You are the only one who can put them together into that unique pattern that will be your life...."

5-0 out of 5 stars McCoy Masterfully Sets A New Standard - Understanding, Identifying, And Developing The "Heart" Of Real Leadership
There has been an avalanche of books on ethics, integrity, and leadership flowing onto the book shelves since the post-Internet scandals of 2000-2003. Some of the better ones include "Authentic Leadership," "True North," and "Head, Heart, and Guts."There are, however, none better than Bowen "Buzz" McCoy's "Living into Leadership," and Joseph Badaracco, Jr.'s "Questions of Character." McCoy and Badaracco have masterfully set a new standard for understanding, identifying, and developing the "heart" of real leadership - leadership the world desperately needs and craves. These are "must have" books for those who have an interest in leadership.

McCoy in "Living into Leadership" packs as much as any author can into his 202 pages. Each page is filled with "meat and potatoes" - a meal not to be rushed but to be savored and digested over time. McCoy, a former partner with Morgan Stanley, and the author of ethics programs at Notre Dame, UCLA, Stanford, USC, and UC Berkeley, has given us a book detailing his search for values and vision. While the book follows his personal journey, "Living into Leadership" should not be perceived as a memoir but, rather, as an enlightened mentor's gift to the world.

Life, McCoy points out, is a continuing unfolding journey - one which should be lived with intention; one in which there will be the potential for new relationships, new ideas, new adventures, and NEW FAILURES; and one in which there will be grave challenges to our attempt to live out our deepest values. If we truly want to succeed in finding meaning and live out these values, we will need to find a constant and consistent source of courage and steadfastness when all else seems to fail. McCoy advises that this comes from being rooted in a "deep level of religious, and spiritual, growth and formation."

"Living into Leadership" provides a path to help us find our way. The book is organized into four sections:

* "Setting Your Compass" -How we develop a sense of our integrity, establishing a personal ethic, living with intention, and sustaining influences.
* "Preparing for the Ethical Dilemma" - Leading in the gray areas, learning and finding meaning continuously, and aligning individual and corporate values.
* "Maintaining Balance and Renewing Continuously" - Ethical trade-offs in the real world, ethics as contextual: developing ethical sensitivity, changing mores through time.
* McCoy's ends the book with an Epilogue that will be of great interest to those who work on the global stage, "Global Mores for Global Business."

What do you want your legacy to be? How do you want to be remembered? McCoy challenges us to consider these questions and to live a life of intention, to sanctify everyday experience, and to sanctify what we experience everyday.

"Meaning is not something you stumble across, like an answer to a riddle or the prize in a treasure hunt. Meaning is something you build into your life. You build it out of your own past, out of your affections and loyalties, out of your experience of humankind as it is passed to you, out of your own talent and understanding, out of the things you believe in, out of the people you love, out of the values for which you are willing to sacrifice something."

"Living into Leadership" is an exceptional read; it is provocative, filled with wisdom, and will appeal to those ready to create a life journey of our own - a journey filled with "adventure, success, and a noble calling."

Product Description
There's a "new normal" in business ethics

Despite all the words and regulations aimed at building ethical and responsible organizations, observed misbehavior has increased-think of the Siemens scandal and Bernie Madoff. Business Ethics: A Case Study Approach confronts the brutal fact about business ethics as it exists today-it's not working.

This stirring casebook powerfully draws a direct line between ethics and business performance-that is, the sounder your company's ethical foundation, the stronger it will perform in brand recognition, sales, customer satisfaction and loyalty, employee productivity, and even in reduced regulatory burdens.

So, how can you develop leadership that sets the right tone at the top?

Author and ethics professional Stephen Henn answers that question with candidly insightful case studies that look at every angle of ethical lapses, including:

  • A CFO's Dilemma
  • The Duke University Lacrosse Scandal
  • Arthur Andersen
  • The Stanford Prison Experiment
  • The Smithsonian Institution
  • Firestone/Ford Tire Recalls
  • Jordan's Furniture
  • Whirlpool and Leadership Development
  • Ponzi Schemes
  • And many more

Examining the old mind-sets and dogmas on business ethics and holding them up to the light of day, Business Ethics: A Case Study Approach reveals how the ethical health of your organization will forecast whether or not it outperforms the competition. This is your twenty-first-century rule book for understanding the "new normal" in business ethics. ... Read more

This comprehensive collection presents a case-method approach to teaching business ethics. It contains a wide range of individual, managerial, and corporate cases, many with an international perspective. All cases have been classroom-tested at the Harvard Business School; most have been developed in the field rather than in the library.27 new cases (of the total 59 cases) cover such topics as labor-management trust, product liability, foreign child labor, business e-ethics, the oil industry and climate control, and more. A new appendix, "Corporate Self-Assessment and Improvement," provides a corporate self-assessment tool for senior management and boards of directors aimed at increasing ethical awareness and avoiding potential threats to an organization’s reputation. The second Appendix, "Bridging East and West in Management Ethics," has been revised and updated to discuss certain basic similarities between Asian and Western ethical ideals through the Caux Round Table Principles of Business Conduct. ... Product Description

This interesting, comprehensive book about business ethics argues that ethics is the ‘glue’ that makes successful business possible. It allows the reader to see the whole range of issues in business ethics rather than just selected topics. Its focus on internationalization and globalization is important, as it relates facts about this dynamic, growing aspect of corporate business. This book not only covers ethics, it also includes such topics as: management, production, marketing, finance, workers’ rights, and environmental issues; it enables readers to see how all of the issues presented are interrelated. An excellent resource and reference work for international corporate employees, marketing administrators, and human resource managers and employees.

4-0 out of 5 stars ok, but a little dry
This ethics book was a required reading for one of my college courses. It is a dry read, but has valuable information on ethical behavior. It also offers case examples.

If you are looking for a really good ethical read on case examples, I recommend "Taking Sides" Business Ethics and Society. That has powerful readings in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars speedy delivery
Even though I ordered this text last minute, I still received it in time to start class and not get behind. The book is in great condition - perfect for what I need it for.

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring, boring, and way too much text on a page.
I am an instructor with a very large private institution. We have no choice in the texts -- they are assigned to us and we MUST use them.I found this book to be tedious and boring.I'm 100% positive my students will not bother with this text unless I give them pop quizzes on the material.Paragraphs of 20-25 sentences are difficult to read. And there's no instructor materials.Instructors, if you have a choice AVOID this book at all costs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not that you have a choice
I doubt anyone is looking at this printed flotsam for casual reading, but on the off chance a course instructor might read this, I'll give a firm warning - don't use this for your course.

While the theory it employs is interesting, it is steeped in outdated methods and filled with outdated information. If you're going to try to use it in a classroom setting, you must augment a book like this with a tremendous amount of current data...or completely fail to prepare your students for the current business environment, which has shifted greatly since the original version was written and barely updated. Ethics themselves may not have changed, but the ethical challenges one faces in businesses are not constant.

Furthermore, to push out version after version of a book with minor and insufficient updates and charge this much for it isn't ethical, so the people behind this book have no business teaching a subject they obviously have no experience in.

1-0 out of 5 stars I don't get this book
This book is supposed to teach business ethics, but it reads like a philosophy book. The book is very wishy washy in presenting how decisions should be made leaving almost everything open ended.

The book spends a lot of time talking about morales, and the base morales of society. For example, killing someone is bad, right? But what about if you are attacked with deadly force?Yes, that discussion might be appropriate for a class on personal morales, but when can a business be attacked with deadly force and justify killing a individual?

I believe the book gives too little focus to the topic that is the title of the book. There are a few case studies in the book, and those are worthwhile, but the remaining 90% of the book is not worth reading to learn about business ethics. ... Read more

Product Description

Throughout recorded history, the primary sources of conflict in life have been religion and ethics. The 21st Century is right on track, from the war in the Middle East to sectarian violence nearly everywhere else. Hardly a day goes by without headlines about religious conflicts.

Additionally, the news is filled with the shenanigans of Enron, WorldCom, and Bernie Madoff, forcing hard questions about business ethics to the forefront of peoples' minds.

The Gods of Business is an indispensable guide for discovering the intersection of faith and the marketplace. In plain language, Todd Albertson reveals the anatomy of the world's major religions--Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Secular Postmodernism, Shintoism, and Sikhism--and discusses how their spiritual traditions impact business ethics.

Provocative, eye-opening, and funny, The Gods of Business provides telling insights into the loudly proclaimed dogmas and silent subtleties that dramatically affect individuals--businesspeople, educators, politicians, journalists, and others--who are unaware of, or confused about, diverse religious beliefs, or who are just wishing they could turn back the clock and deal with their hometown ways of doing things.

The Gods of Business is, as the Midwest Book Review writes, "A 'must-have' primer for anyone unfamiliar with basic tenets of world religions in today's era of globalization."

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely not "liberal non-Christian dribble"
I'm a student at Princeton University. I am also a Christian (a practicing Roman Catholic).I was writing a paper on Business Ethics and the New Testament and my professor recommended I get this book. Between his endorsement (he is anti-Christian) and the review by Lisa from Colorado Springs who calls this book "liberal non-Christian dribble", I was reluctant to spend money on this book.

The author doesn't hide his faith at all and is obviously a Christian, although he writes the book more or less objectively. I think that is why my professor likes this book because the author doesn't advocate for a specific faith or slam non-Christian faiths directly. Although in reality he does, it is just that my prof is too blind to the facts to see them on the page.By the author objectively looking at each belief systems, Christianity sure seems the sanest of all faiths and the one requiring the least amount of "faith" to believe (especially compared to secular Post-Modernism).

I think Lisa's condemnation that this book isn't Christian because it uses the terms CE instead of AD (which she erroneously believes stands for "After Death" and not the Latin "Anno Domini")is just dumb!Everybody in academia refers to the modern era is CE (Common or Current Era). You couldn't write a book like this and have it be taken seriously by anyone other than right-wing fundamentalists without using that terminology. And besides, who says CE is bad?It also could stand for "Christian Era!"

I really like the author's revised Chapter 11.It is powerful and is a no holds barred commentary on modern life, religion, and business ethics. My major criticism of this book is that it provides each religion's equivalent of the "Golden Rule" at the beginning of each chapter.I don't feel this is objective since Christianity is the only religion reaching love and all these other Golden Rules are just cheap counterfeits that add credibility to other religions that they don't deserve. If not for this, I would have given the book 5 stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great overview!
I was looking for a book that summarized major religions' view about business. This book did just that! The consistent format made comparison across faiths easy. (It looks like the formatting from a dissertation). Each chapter describes history, branches within the religion, the sacred text, how that faith views the marketplace and recommended reading. A great survey that is a prelude to reading more deeply. Thanks!

1-0 out of 5 stars Liberal Non-Christian Dribble
I bought this book because of the author's Evangelical Christian credentials.I was sadly disappointed. He must be a liberal Christian at best and probably not even really saved to have written this sort of non-Christian dribble. He should be ashamed calling himself a Christian!

In this book he treats all religions equally. He even uses humanistic terminology like C.E. (the abbreviation for "Common Era" which is an atheist replacement for A.D. ("After Death)."If you really are a Christian a much better reading choice would be Fundamentals of the Faith: Essays in Christian Apologetics.

Don't buy this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive
This book is impressive. It was recommend recently by a colleague. The story of religious worldview and business ethics is excellent material, and the author tells it well.

4-0 out of 5 stars An objective look at Judaism
The Gods of Business educates the reader as to the basics of Christianity, Islam, Judaism, New Age, The Occult, Secular Humanism, and more.In today's multi-relgious environment, people are confused with what each religion holds as truth. While this book does not exhaustively cover the subject, I can say as a Rabbi that it does provides an objective look at Judaism! ... Read more

The book was received very fast and was in the stated condition.Very pleased.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent, but rather uneven coverage for an intro text.
One benefit of this book is that it contains articles, commentary, and discussion questions all in one text.It also covers a wide variety of issues, which is good since business ethics is a vast subject. On the negative side, I don't think the organization of the sections is the most effective way to approach the topic. The sections are organized based on a 1991 survey of CEOs in which the participants ranked their most important types of ethical dilemmas. As a result, there isn't the logical flow or progression of ideas from chapter to chapter that one might expect from a philosophy book. Unfortunately, the pragmatic interests of CEOs are not the same as the educational needs of students who are new to business ethics. There is also no discussion of ethical theories and no direct interaction between the articles. On the whole, this book may be beneficial if used in conjunction with a survey of ethical theories and ethical decision-making, but taken by itself it makes for a rather uneven introduction to business ethics. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The way it would have been in a perfect business world
Although some of the ideas in this book may sound utopian to many readers, those who apply, even one-half of those ideas, in their business dealings will create an unsurmountable competitive advantage. Business Ethics: Ethical Decisions and Cases is a book that every business leader needs to read. This is because it is essential for business leaders to understand and apply the intertwining and inseperability of ethics, law, leadership and competitiveness. These are essential to the needs of every firm dealing with stiff competition today, when it seems that winners are taking all. In fact, as the acclaimed Professor Magaret Neal of Stanford Business School stressed, "winners don't take all."

Notwithstanding the always-talked-about need for business leaders to operate responsibly, many leaders are falling prey to the dog-eat-dog business world, where there seems to be no conscience. This book challenges those who might think that competition has turned so nasty that only the toughest and wiliest players will prevail. The fact is that those firms that strictly adhere to ethical principles espoused here, by Ferrell, Fraedrich and Ferrel, are driving more sustainable growth. The winning leaders know they are required to make sound ethical decisions throughout their careers. They view economics, law and ethics concurrently when making decisions. No doubt, this work in the areas of Ethics, Law & Leadership has provoked a lot of interest and challenge to some business leaders who find themselves dealing with a lot of conflicting issues today; and where ethical "maybes" are more prevalent than before.

It's a great book that would have saved some heahaches for companies like:

Enron®
Tyco®
Arthur Andersen®
Halliburton®
WorldCom®
Global Crossing®
Dynergy®
Qwest®
Sunbeam®
HP®

Readers will remember the hard lessons learned by the leaders of the above companies, who cared less about ethics and fairness. It's a must-read. [Nwankama W Nwankama]

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful and Enlightening

The book contains a wealth of useful and helpful information and ideas on business ethics. As a manager you bring with you your own concept of what is right and what is wrong to your organisation. Every decision that you make is the application of these values to the question at hand. This is made more difficult by the pressures of organisational life. These are the pressures of rapid changes, the pressure for greater productivity, competition and superiors, among others. Sometimes managers make decisions which conflict with their own or society's values because of what they see as the pressures of the business world. Dealing with ethical and moral issues is often perplexing.

This excellent book provides guidance on how we should think through an ethical issue, the questions we should ask and the factors that we should consider and how we can ensure that corporate social responsibility issues receive the attention they deserve.

The book is well written in an easy to follow and understand format. The author methodically explains the various ethical concepts and issues including the ethical approaches and provides handy and helpful guidance on how businesses can act ethically whilst ensuring that it meets its profit objectives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview of Business Ethics
As a business ethics consultant, I read many books on the subject. This is one of the few books that I recommend clients and their human resources professionals read.It is well written and contains excellent information. The hypothetical ethics scenarios are very well thought out. What I like most about this book is that it is organized in such a smart, logical manner - one concept logically follows another. It starts with the basic concepts of what are ethics, business ethics and social responsibility, provides some history on the development of business ethics, and takes off from there.I highly recommend this book for anyone with an interest (or who should have an interest!) in business ethics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for anyone in business or professional field
This book was part of my Professional Ethics class. I have to say I was very skeptical (as the textbooks are never fun and one guy gave it a poor review) at first. However, after reading the book I have learned a lot. Ethics is not a matter of conservative or liberal (if that's true than god himself has to be a liberal not to mention bible talked about ethical behavior too). This book focused on why we need ethics in business and how proper ethics enforcement can save a business from corruption and other questionable behavior which eventually may bring down a business (think Enron). It talked about both sides and didn't force someone's opinion on us rather helped us make our own decision which will be ethical and benefiting to the business. Although it was my text book I'd recommend this book to anyone as part of business strategy making.
