4-0 out of 5 stars Good!
I had to read this book for my Business Ethics class and the stories are a good length and definitely makes you think! Especially when you bring it in to discussion in class. I really enjoyed this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Mixed bag
I have taught this book in a Christian-oriented Business Ethics college course aimed at working adult students.

This is a very professional work. There is an excellent selection of case studies, many of them of fairly recent vintage. There are great discussions of theoretical concepts including models of social involvement (from the likes of Friedman, Goodpaster, and Rivoli) and "groupthink."

The book falls short in the otherwise promising subtitle: A Judeo-Christian Approach to Business Ethics. Rae and Wong present a variety of different ethical approachs and find merit in nearly all of them. For instance, ethical egoism is found to be consistent with a Christian world view because, after all, each of us must be concerned with the future of our own soul. What we seem to get is a generally eclectic view of ethics. In the end, the authors give the greatest weight to virtue ethics. However, it is highly debateable whether this view properly characterizes the "Judeo-Christian approach." While concern for one's soul, virtues, etc., certainly are part of the Christian life, many Christian ethicists might characterize the overall approach in terms of a modified divine command theory. In any case, after laying out all these approaches, and picking their favorite, the authors fail to apply virtue ethics with any regularity to their subsequent commentaries and discussions.

In my class, students much preferred the other textbook we used: Richard C. Chewning, et al's "Business Through the Eyes of Faith." This is a very different kind of book from "Beyond Integrity," but it seemed to speak directly to the students' personal situations. We might have been better off using a standard secular text on ethics, together with Chewning et al. However, "Beyond Integrity" is the book to use if you must have a top-flight business text with a Christian point of view.

Few doubt that we need to raise the level of honesty and integrity in the workplace. Given that most Americans proclaim a belief in God, and at least pay lip service to the Bible and Christianity, it makes sense that we should be calling on our employers and employees to "walk the talk." Arguably, a properly practiced Judeo-Christian ethic can provide the resources to build a better business environment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for christian business ethics
I am a Christian CEO in Hong Kong and have written a book review on this book for the Graduate Christian Fellowship a few months back.An excellent reference.Touched on many important and controversial issues includingcapitalism, bribery in third world, honesty, advertisement and marketing, etc.Presented many primary articles with balanced, provocative opinionsfrom all sides. A book for the serious thinker.NOT FOR NEW CHRISTIANBELIEVERS NOR FOR NON-BUSINESS PERSON.Only one criticism: the editors'own comments at the end of each chapter is a bit weak; not the same calibreas the 20-30 authors. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A frank, enlightening & objective look at Russian business.
This book is the only one I know of that has been written in recent times that has looked at Russian business in an objective way.Although the media tends to make judgements about different cultures, this book, as far as I see, is judgement free. One part I loved about the book, is that it starts off with the fact that the old stories of shortages are passé (this pleased me because after I returned from living in Belarus, many people asked me if there was food on the shelves of stores. After a while I started to get annoyed with people for asking me this when I found that shopping in Belarus, the Ukraine, and in Russia was still faster than your ordinary grocery line up in most other countries). For people interested in Russian business, this is an amazing book for learning about the psyche of the Russian consumer and the reasoning behind why Russian business is the way it is.More generally, however, this book has a broader appeal to those that are interested in people around the world.Whereas most books tend to take a stand on issues either for or against, the authors simply describe a situation, and allow readers to draw their own conclusions, which most of the time lead a person with at least an intermediate level of reasoning skills to realize that Russian business practices and ethics are not necessarily better or worse than those in our respective countries, just different, and that in a broader sense, the history of a country plays a very large role in the determination of how business practices are carried out, as well as what is and isn't considered ethical.Another advantage of this book is that it is up-to-date from people in a good position to know.Although I am unaware of Mr. Wilson's profession in St. Petersburg, I knew beforehand that Mr. Donaldson is an editor for the St. Petersburg Press, who has the initial perception of a Westerner, but the experience of a native, which holds a lot more credibility with me than a professor who has read books on the subject, analysed press releases from accross the ocean, etc. to deliver information to the readers. Definitely worth reading!!! ... Read more

CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN BUSINESS ETHICS approaches business ethics from a social and political perspective, asking students to consider the proper place of business in society, particularly as played out through the tension between strategies that rely on market mechanisms and strategies aimed at protecting individual rights. This book focuses on the rights and responsibilities of employees, laying out a rigorous discussion of economic markets and a close philosophical analysis of ethical theories in the context of contemporary business responsibility. While often neglected in other texts, this focus remains an extremely relevant area of business ethics for today's students as they prepare for their careers in an ever-competitive workplace. This text's mix of readings, text, case studies, and decision scenarios has proven its accessibility across a wide range of student interests and abilities. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Wealth of Resources
Many textbooks are very expensive now, and "On Moral Business" has the virtue of giving the reader a lot for the money.Looking critically at the issues of business ethics from multiple perspectives (including some limited perspectives on Hinduism, Islam, and Buddhism, as well as Chrisitanity and Judaism), "On Moral Business' provides a great deal of insight from classic critical observers such as Aristotle, Karl Marx, Adam Smith, Max Weber, Reinhold Niebuhr, Walter Rauschenbusch, in addition to good excerpts of Catholic social thought on the morality of business, as well as Protestant Church documents.Anyone wishing to acquire a comprehensive reader on economic issues from a both a religious and a secular philosophical disposition would be advised that this book is well worth the money. As with all extensive readers, some articles and excerpts are more valuable than others, but a careful reading should produce a wealth of ideas to develop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally!
As a Engineering/Design Manager with over a decade of experience dealing with the "human" side of business, it was fantastic to finally find a book that sums up a clear roadmap for dealing with everyday ethical business issues. Dr. Collins is not only insightful in his evaluation of human nature, but also elaborates on how to motivate people to consistantly "do the right thing". Whether you are a seasoned manager looking for a fresh approach to age old issues, or a new manager about to embark on a career change, this book will be instrumental in helping you build an solid, ethical foundation for your company.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Business Ethics Book that Makes Sense
Denis Collins' new book - Essentials of Business Ethics -- really makes sense. The book is well written and quite comprehensive. He is an expert on the topic and the book's competence is readily apparent.Collins touches upon all the key topics in business ethics and in many cases has whole chapters dedicated to the topic. For example, his is one of the few business ethics books with entire chapters written on such topics as:hiring ethical people; ethics training; ethics reporting systems; ethical foundations of capitalism; and empowering ethical employees.Empowering ethical employees is one of my favorites because so many ethical employees do not know what to do when they observe organizational misconduct.

His effective use of actual business examples provides for a strong touchstone with the real world. Whether you are reading just because you think business ethics is important, or you are a business person, or an instructor thinking about using the book in a class, I think you will find this book to be one of the most user-friendly, authoritative books on the market today.Another bonus is that if you get the book you also get access to the book's website that contains a 76 item best practices survey.

This book is a winner and I strongly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The quintessential book on Business Ethics!
"Essentials of Business Ethics" may well be essential, but it goes far beyond the basic fundamentals, and it's nothing short of a must-read book for any CEO, HR Manager, business professional, or ordinary person who's concerned with the recent avalanche of scandals and dishonesty in corporate America and wants to make a difference in his/her community. But what makes this particular book so different from other business ethics books? For starters, it's not a "preachy" book that reads like a sermon for executives, nor is it an obscure philosophical treatise reminiscent of an insomnia prescription-strength doctoral dissertation. It is a book that's easy to read but at the same time thought-provoking and meaningful.More importantly, it's a book you can use, because it's full of practical applications essential to any organization.

Take the diversity chapter, for example: Instead of being all theory and no action, the book offers a clear 10-step process that organizations can use to implement diversity initiatives. There are also compelling arguments for implementing such intiatives, specific solutions to a multitude of diversity training problems, and numerous exercises that can be used as part of diversity training. The references are so current, some of the sources used are only months old! That's only one out of a dozen chapters, mind you. The book covers a wide variety of important topics, including ways of preventing ethical hazards, providing effective training on ethics, integrating ethics in hiring and performance appraisals, empowering and rewarding integrity in the workplace, considering environmental issues, building a reputation for impeccably ethical practices, and many more!

It's clear that I'm enthusiastic about this book, because I believe in the clear and present difference it can make for businesses, non-profit organizations, educational institutions, and others.I've read Denis Collins's previous book on Enron (Behaving Badly), and heard him speak on public radio before.I didn't know at the time that he was an internationally acclaimed expert on business ethics, on the editorial board of several prestigious journals in the field, and someone who truly believes in and lives by the ethical principles he advocates.

"Essentials of Business Ethics" is a book long overdue; a compelling, provocative call to action and an invaluable how-to manual on workplace ethics. It is certain to help organizations both prevent and tackle important ethical dilemmas and challenges at a time of dire need for a new direction! ... Product Description
Bestselling author and expert on leadership John C. Maxwell shares the only rule that matters--in business and in life.

How does a person judge what is ethical? Sometimes it’s clear. In the past year or two, ethical lapses in corporate America have been well documented. But is it always easy to see where the line is in life? What’s the standard? And can it work in all situations? Maxwell thinks it can. In ETHICS 101, he shows how people can live with integrity by using the Golden Rule as their standard--regardless of religion, culture, or circumstances. Along the way, he delves into the desires of the human heart, reveals the five most common pitfalls that throw people off the ethical track, and teaches how to develop the Midas touch when it comes to personal integrity. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Quality feedback
This book holds no mysteries about what is important in relation to ethics. It provides some useful statistical data, plus some different angles at why ethics can be important.

The book itself is not revolutionary, it will not break new ground, but it is an easy read that helps the reader to remember some of the important things in life when living by certain personal standards.

Go ahead, get the book and enjoy an easy, solid text that will remind you of why there is only one way to do things.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ethics - You can't lead without it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So you think you want to be a leader?Well what are the core essentials of leadership? If ethical behavior is not one of your answers then guess what a leader you will never be.

Knowing right from wrong and applying it in one's life is essential and becomes crucial if one aspires to be leadership. You cannot be at peace in your life, nor a success in life if you don't know what it means to be ethical.Being an ethical person is not something that you switch on and off like a light switch, when it suits your needs.

Maxwell in this book provides the primer to those starting on their leadership journey about the importance of ethics. For those who have drifted off course, Maxwell will help you set your course and life on the path that we all should follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars sweet & simple but hard to achieve
This little book reminds the reader of what he/she has hopefully learned before but spends a lifetime trying to apply. The negative reviewer who is an academic finds this book disdainful because it offers "nothing" for he thinksthe real dilemna of ethics seems to belong to to the halls of academia for only within those confines can one truly understand the ancients.Maxwell is delightful because of this lack of intellectual snobishness.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice topic, but could be made better
If you remove the boring real life stories examples, add some practical 'How Tos' and let the sequence of ideas be more related to each other, you would have a readable book on 'Ethics 101'.

1-0 out of 5 stars This Book Does Not Advocate Honest Selling
This book does not foster honesty in sales. It perpetuates the myth that sales is about closing. It perpetuates the false assumption that prospects are liars. It perpetuates the misguided belief that prospects are too stupid to figure out what is best for themselves without being guided by you -- the salesperson. It perpetuates the self-centered thinking that a salesperson's job is to guide prospects to buying what he or she sells. It perpetuates manipulative tactics -- even their wording examples for overcoming objections show their complete lack of understanding of what Honest Selling really is.

Bad: This book continues the self-centered, "it's all about the close" thinking that is responsible for everything wrong in sales.

Worse: It does so under the guise of honesty.

If you believe in Honest Selling then do not waste your time with "Honesty Sells."

Gill E. Wagner, President, Founder & Creator of Honest Selling

5-0 out of 5 stars Honesty Sells is a phenomenal resource for my team!
What a great resource! Having honesty at the heart of communications is detrimental. The personal stories were a great touch and the timing of the book couldn't be more perfect. The world needs this in such a tight economy where it's much more likely for struggling minds to be unethical to stay in the game.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for all salespeople and managers!
The title speaks for itself. Over my career of many years in retail and corporate sales, I've seen it time and time again where I've worked with other sales rep who lie to their customers-to make a quick buck only later to earn a reputation as being a con and losing customers in the long-term. The book carries many examples that I was able to relate to where customers haven't told the whole truth, dragged on the sales cycle, and even didn't admit they weren't the actual buyer and had a major influence from other senior management in the company. It gave me a lot of food for thought as well to think about how honest I am with myself in terms of cold calling and how productive I am as a sales rep. It's a book you'll come back to more than once and really provide you a lot of ideas on how you can become the most ethical and responsible sales rep out there! ... Read more

We often make small ethical compromises for "good" reasons: We lie to a customer because our boss asked us to. We exaggerate our accomplishments on our résumé to get an interview. Temptation blindsides us. And we make snap decisions we regret.

Minor ethical lapses can seem harmless, but they instill in us a hard-to-break habit of distorted thinking. Rationalizations drown out our inner voice, and we make up the rules as we go. We lose control of our decisions, fall victim to the temptations and pressures of our situations, taint our characters, and sour business and personal relationships.

In Ethics for the Real World, Ronald Howard and Clinton Korver explain how to master the art of ethical decision making by:

Identifying potential compromises in your own life
Applying distinctions to clarify your ethical thinking
Committing in advance to ethical principles
Generating creative alternatives to resolve dilemmas

Packed with real-life examples, this book gives you practical advice to respond skillfully to life's inevitable ethical challenges. Not only can you make right decisions, you can acquire new habits that will realize the best in yourself and transform your relationships. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars What Separates Us From The Rest Of Creation?
'Ethics for the Real World' is a wonderfully conceived, highly accessible exploration and guide to one of the most neglected aspects of humanity, the pursuit of a workable, noble personal code of ethics. In a society of extreme narcissism dominated by self interest and instant gratification it is more important now than ever to have some standard of evaluation and measurement to give the individual clarity and purpose. This is definitely a good place to start.

4-0 out of 5 stars Makes You think and helps you act
Good effort on a tough position to hold: individual and autonomous ethical "norms."
Those without a fixed and immutable moral fountainhead, must follow advise and their own heart.
I deny such and desire to affirm that which must be true an fixed.
A good read.
Easy to understand.
Simple to apply.
But incorrect starting point.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sound Advice for Ethical Resolutions
Has ethics taken a back seat to expediency?Have honesty and integrity been replaced by greed and deception?Has corporate America become so obsessed with profitability that it has forsaken any shred of decency when dealing with its employees and/or customers?

Unfortunately, the answer to the rhetorical questions above are a resounding "yes" on all three fronts. The authors, Ron Howard & Clint Korver probably understand these ethical issues are worth addressing; hence, this book.

The advice given by Howard & Korver is sound, if a bit pedestrian.Certainly, in a world where the average person tells two to three lies a day, how do we draw the line from what is "acceptable behavior" and what isn't?Clearly, no lies (no matter how insignificant or expedient) are truly justifiable. However, in the real world, living up to that moral standard is a challenge; in some cases, the white lies could save a career.

However, in the final analysis; it's best to keep your moral compass visible.Guiding you in the right direction is really the only way to deal with whatever challenges you may face, in business or your personal life. The trick is to get everyone on the same ethical page; sometimes "real world" solutions only come in text books.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Me
After months of trying to read this book, I am throwing in the towel.I just can't get into it.I guess my personal code was created early during my formative years, and I don't feel a need to read this book or create a list of behaviors that are acceptable or a personal code.Apparently others have found it useful, and I hope it will provide someone in need of guidance the answers they seek on establishing or maintaining their own ethical behavior.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is not what I was looking for
I bought this book after listening to NPR radio Clinton D. Korver interview . See I was actually looking for a book which can help me making right decisions and the psychology behind. I still remember the example Clinton gave on that radio show. "Suppose a mother wears a new dress and asks her daughter if she is looking fat ? One can question if thats what she is asking. According to me (Clinton) she is basically asking if her daughter still loves her". I found some connection between these two (fat & love) and I bought this book thinking we will have more connections like these.

But this book talks about ethical codes basically circumstances / situations when you should make correct ethical decisions based on your ethical code. But I feel life is bit more complicated and we need help in understanding these complicated decision. To me it looks like this book fall short on that. ... Read more

Business Ethics offers a structured set of readings with a clear conceptual progression; classic and current topics; and issues that matter to students. But that’s not all:The instructor's resource CD-ROM contains lesson plans, and discussion, essay and multi-choice questions for every reading.A dedicated web site, designed by Dr. Gibson, also allows students access to further research and exploration into their own interests. The cases -- linked directly to the readings -- are deliberately short and provocative, challenging students to take and defend their own ethical analysis. ... Product Description
Named one of the Best Business Books of 2003 by Library Journal!Wouldn’t it be nice if all executives had a magical rabbit—like the one in the movie Harvey -- following them around reminding them to be ethical? In this charming fable, Aristotle (Ari, for short) is a pooka -- a mythical, invisible creature with a penchant for advising against dishonesty. Our hero, Edgar P. Benchley, has been able to see and hear Ari since childhood, and as he journeys through his professional life, constantly faced with challenging questions of good conduct, Ari helps remind him that nice guys can succeed . . . even in the world of business.Much needed in these times when confidence in corporations has eroded, A Business Tale offers readers the inspiration to make ethical choices even when it isn’t easy or immediately rewarding. Following the story, the book also contains real-life examples and a 10-step action plan for ethical behavior in the workplace. A Business Tale is an easy-to-read, unforgettable "spoonful of sugar"to help companies and individuals digest the sometimes tart lessons of practical morality in the workplace. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL LITTLE THOGHT PROVOKING BOOK
This little book is great on so many levels. It consists of, as the title would indicate, of questions concerning Business, Politics and Ethics. There are a total of 223 questions. The book is completely and absolutely nonjudgemental, as it gives no answers to the questions nor does it supply any opinions. This job is left up to you!The questions are well written and very plane it that they are, at first glance simple.Far from it.When you read one of the questions here, you will have almost an instant "gut" reaction, or instant answer, but, after giving it some thought, you will find you self thinking, "hey, this is not as easy as I thought."This is a wonderful book for group discussions, but beware, some of the questions could be discussed for days and days, answers would change and opinions swayed...it is just that type of book.I love to brouse through it, read a question, and then just think, asking myself questions about the questions asked. The issues addressed here are ones we face on a daily basis in our society and are not particularly addressed only to business and politics.Highly recommend this one!

4-0 out of 5 stars Get Thinking
Far too many of us wait until faced with an ethical dilemma before figuring out what our personal ethical stand is. This book, used correctly, provides the opportunity to flex your brain muscle and reflect on your ethical perspective before it becomes necessary.

I use it to challenge my site management team every morning with great effect.

The only criticism I would have is that some questions while provacative are not for the meek.

Great job Mr Stock

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, thought-provoking, and non-judgmental
The original "Book of Questions" made a good conversation-starter and, in my opinion, inspirational tool for writing or journaling. "The Book of Questions: Love and Sex" is better for helping you to see your own relationship values and how they may be helping and harming you and your loved one, and it can also be used to help open up communication in a relationship if approached carefully. "The Book of Questions: Business, Politics and Ethics," on the other hand, is perhaps best for pushing you to explore your own moral values and how well you're living up to them.

What's most impressive about this is that very few of the questions seem to imply a "right" answer or try to push some sort of specific realization, and even those that do sort of come across that way don't have to be read in that way. Dr. Stock specifically says that he doesn't want to push an agenda--he merely wants to spur people to think more carefully about what it is they're doing and why.

The questions run the gamut from economic programs to health care, international policy to business. There are questions about hiring and firing employees, stealing from or betraying employers, tradeoffs in public programs and government spending, and so on. Many of the questions seem particularly relevant to today's political situations. While I wasn't as fond of the tradeoff questions in the "Love and Sex" book, I think that in this one they come across much better. Somehow they end up feeling less arbitrary and more like realistic quandaries.

Dr. Stock tries not to give us easy questions with easy answers, instead forcing us to truly think about the hard issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book to Test Your Ethics and Values
I have the screen saver version of this book, which is integrated with the original The Book of Questions for Windows computers. The graphics and sound effects are great and I get lots of people in the office asking meabout it.It's a real head turner that engages people in conversation. ...
