5-0 out of 5 stars Home-Based Food Business
I have read a lot of books about business and this one is by far the best. I love it and plan to use many of it's tips and ideas. It is very well organized and clear but it doesn't skip anything. It is well worth the money and when Amazon sends it to your home how can you miss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book and Great Advice
I love this book it gives great advice. and the "Tips" section is worth the price of the book all by itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful ifno
This book was a quick read but full of very useful information. It gave me a lot to think about as I contemplate a home-based food business. Good info on pricing, time management, and it even includes recipes. Well worth your time and money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful
I'm happy to report that I filed for my LLC yesterday, and will soon be on my way to baking from my kitchen for our local farmer's market. I couldn't have done this without this book. It helped me realize that starting a business from my home was possible, and the book gave great advice on how to easily make it happen--from the fun stuff like packaging, to the business-related topics like business licenses and accounting. Thank you so much!!!

Amazon.com Review
A front-page byline in The New York Times! A Peoplemagazine cover story! A travel assignment in Katmandu! Dream on. "This is abook," says author Lucy V. Parker, "about commercial writing, businesswriting, nonfiction writing. It is a book about obtaining practical, oftenunglamorous assignments that can pay the bills." Sure, celebrity profilesand investigative journalism can be thrilling, but so can paying the rent.Besides, someone has to write all those newsletters, brochures, pressreleases, speeches, instructional manuals, and articles for employeemagazines. With Parker's help, you can write a business plan, form abusiness, market your services, learn what to charge (and how to collectyour due), and deal with taxes and contracts. Parker even tells you how tocope with the loneliness inherent in running a solo venture. Hint: onlinechat rooms are OK, but "people breaks" are better. With profiles of 10successful professionals from a variety of specialties and a list of 60 keyassignments for home-based writers. --Jane Steinberg ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great How to Start guide
Easy to read and packed full of informative information. This is a good basic start to doing business online.

3-0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag of advice and information quality
This wouldn't be the first book that I would recommend for reading by a beginning freelancer. The author presents all potential writing opportunities (e.g., magazine and corporate writing) with equal emphasis, and the result is an overwhelming set of ideas and worksheets that are more likely to confuse newbies than to help them. Particularly baffling to me was the author's choice of a model business plan, which is much more suitable for a large company than a one-person freelance business. I was also very surprised that the author did not discuss web sites as a critical part of a freelance writer's promotional efforts. Although commercial web sites may not have been important when the first edition of this book was published, they are essential today -- along with blogs and other forms of online marketing that also aren't covered in this book. And although some of the author's recommended resources are a bit dated, the book does contain topics, profiles, worksheets, and resource lists that aren't covered in other freelancing guides and that will be useful to writers who have some experience in working on their own.

5-0 out of 5 stars A completely up-to-date instructional reference
A previous edition of Lucy V. Parker's "How To Start A Home-Based Writing Business" was recommended by the staff of Midwest Book Review to anyone aspiring to earn a living through their writing as being "A superbly presented, complete-in-one-volume manual. An invaluable user-friendly, highly recommended 'how to' guide specifically for freelance writers." Now in a newly updated and expanded seventh edition, that original assessment has been further strengthened and justified. Featuring a jargon-free, eminently practical, informed and informative text of instruction, advice, and commentary, "How To Start A Home-Based Writing Business" is enhanced with the inclusion of Business-Success Worksheets, Prospect Information Forms, Estimate Forms, Job-Log and Job-Control Forms, a Checklist of Key Client Types, Profiles of Success Stories, Guidelines for Software Selection, Business Resources, and a Source Directory making it a completely up-to-date instructional reference that will prove enduringly valuable to anyone seeking to establish a career writing be it with fiction, non-fiction, or any combination of the two

4-0 out of 5 stars Home Based Writing Business
My writing has become more focused since reading Ms. Parker's book.It is a detailed work on writing a business plan and planning a business. It guides the reader into his/her specialty and since my writing lacked focused, this book is on point.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview
This book is a very good overview of the business of writing from home.Just don't expect to see much indepth information here.

A good book for those just starting out and looking for information on the generalities of home-based work as well as some marketing ideas for the writing business specifically.

If your brand new to this area then I highly recommend this book.If you already have a home-based business or know most of the information needed for starting one up then I suggest other more specific books for your writing business. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and entertaining.
I started thumbing through this at a friends house. I was just using it as a time killer as I have no aspirations of becoming a personal trainer, but after a few pages I really got taken in by the writing. The author writes in a very easy to read, conversational style. The author's personal experiences, shown in sidebars, gave me the feeling like I was talking to a friend who just happened to know a ton about personal training.

Not to say that the book isn't in depth, as it does a great job of breaking down everything you could possibly have to think about when starting a business. After reading this starting any business seems possible, not just a personal training one. It's very concise without losing the reader in the details. In fact the authors writing style kept me engrossed with the in depth details provided.

If you're thinking of starting any home based business, this book will be helpful. Let alone a home based personal training one. Hell, it made me think I could start one, and trust me, I'm nobodies idea of a personal trainer. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars a place to start
I don't like giving a poor review, but this is sort of basic, and there is nothing wrong with a basic book, but on cleaning?

I mean, it is a sort of basic business, its not that its hard, its that no one wants to do it - that is the success principle of the cleaning business.

I can really recommend this book on the subject, its VERY good and anyone fighting the recession will win big if they follow this one book:

Mopping Up Millions!: Making A Killing In Cleaning -

Get busy and make some money!

5-0 out of 5 stars All you'll need to know
This book was so very helpful with starting my home-based house cleaning business. I new absolutely nothing about the business requirements or how to make myself a "professional" company. I was able to start up and get new clients within a month (with great help from my husband). I definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in starting their own cleaning business.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, Basic Information
We found many of the tips useful when starting our housekeeping business. The author works by herself, however, and recommends as such so if you are planning to have a larger business with employees as we are then you will not find much information in that regard.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Information, I got my first cleaning job in a matter of days!!
This is a great book. Very Imformative. After following some of the guidlelines set out in the book, I landed my first cleaning job in just a matter of days. Well worth the money. Take the time to read this one if you are thinking of starting your own cleaning business.

5-0 out of 5 stars best buy so far
this book tells you most everything you'll need to know in plain simple english. It's a good read too, I couldn't put it down. I read the whole book in 2 days, and I still go back to reference it. Great to have by your side if your just starting out, and even gives great ideas and tips that even pros could use. It came in perfect condition and I got it pretty quickly. Made me excited to try more books on the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Buen comienzo

Muy bueno. Lo recomiendo.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for New Caterers!
When I made the decision recently to start my own catering business I immediately turned to this book. It's filled with invaluable tips and clear explanations of every facet of the catering business.Vivaldo not only shares her equations for success but also reflects on her mistakes. Her clear and direct style make this book easy to read and understand.I especially appreciated Chapter 5: Setting Prices, Estimating Quantities and Writing Proposals. This section is full of food costs analysis, proposal examples and pricing information. I'm a seasoned cook but I still have a thing or two to learn on the business side.If you're even considering starting your own catering business read this book. Thank you, Diane!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay but not exactly what I was looking for
I was interested in starting a part time catering business out of my home. Meaning part-time, cooking in my home. This book was very thorough but pointed out what I had found in the mean time that this is not possible. By working out of your home, this book means that you can run the business aspect (i.e. planning, selling, etc) out of your home. Separate (costly) kitchen facilities are required in most staes. So, while this book was informative for someone who is willing to put their career on the line and solely do catering, it did not work for my purposes.

5-0 out of 5 stars bunch of ideas
...this book contains a lot of useful information, precautions and advices. The author gives also titles of books that are required for the caterer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wished I waited for more recent edition
I bought this book not only for information on how to start my own gift basket business but also because it was used but in excellent condition and was dirt cheap. I figured even if it wasnt what I hoped it would be, I would only be out a very little amount of money. I sure was glad I made the decision. The book is very helpful. I only wished I waited for a more recent edition!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great could have been Excellent
This book was very good I found it to be a step by step way to start a business, however, I'm not so sure it was great in helping those who need to find ways to start up their business w/out the help of others. For example I will be buying my inventory all own my own from my earnings from my primary job. I needed to find INEXPENSIVE vendors, and I just didn't get all that I expected from this book. The book is very easy to follow and gives GREAT advice and EXCELLENT motivation. Shirley is A.O.K in my book

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
I bought at least 10 books when starting my business and this is the only one I actually still refer to. The Marketing chapter gave me so many ideas that never would have occured to me. She really goes into great detail about every last thing that you would need to know - from finding vendors to creating a business plan to setting up your home office. There are no design ideas or color pictures, but the "Tips and Techniques" were invaluable. I was starting from scratch as far as owning my own business is concerned, but this book walked me through every step. I'd recommend it to anyone thinking of going into this business.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a GREAT reference
This is a great reference, especially for those still deciding if a gift basket business is what they want to do.The web sites and businesses reference in the back of the book are diverse, and the ones I have chosen to purchase from have had excellent product and good customer service.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Business Information
Anyone will tell you that starting a business is a lot of preparation before getting into the acutal running of the company. This book focuses on that important fact. Any business that deals with a product to a customer should have insurance. Some people may choose this business because they think that it is inexpensive and easy to sell your product, and yes it can be that if you work hard at it but the business information presented in this book is what will help save you from yourself and lack of knowledge about running a business.

While it may seem improbable that someone could sue you for food poisoning because a product you sold them made them sick, it becomes very real when you are about to lose your house and all your possessions because you were not insured. Small business insurance is probably the most important thing that someone should have if they are a sole propiertorship. This may not be good news to someone who is looking to start a business on a limited budget but it a necessity. I was impressed with all the business information that was included in this book because a lot of home based business books skip over that section and instead focus on the product. If you have the idea than you already have the product, the rest is implementation.

Get this book if you have ideas but not aware of how to run a business. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Generous and Proven Advice
I first met Jill Hart, co-author of So You Want to be a Work-at-Home Mom a couple of years ago. We were both attending a writers' conference and without ever having met me in person, Jill offered to pick me up at the airport. It is with that kind of generous spirit that Jill and Diana Ennen wrote their excellent guide to starting a home-based business.

Jill and Diana pull no punches. They tell you that you need to set your priorities in your home and your business. When they overlap, you will need to be prepared for the difficulties that arise. The authors encourage you to analyze your heart first. Have you prayed about becoming a CWAHM - Christian Work-at-Home Mom?

Then the practical questions. Are you self-reliant? Self-motivated? Self-disciplined? If so, this is the book for you.

Systematically, the authors guide you through the steps to being a successful CWAHM all the while keeping faith and family at the forefront. Charts, logs, and lists will help you stay on task, organized, and motivated. If you're a Christian mom thinking of setting up a home-based business, pick up this book and learn from two women who have successfully worked from their homes and generously help you learn to do it, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars So much great information in this book
If you're been thinking about working from home, this is a must-have book. Anything and everything you need to know is included in the pages. There are chapters on setting up a business, marketing, client relations, and how to balance your job with family and friends. The authors also give personal examples from their own life that show the reader how they dealt with issues that came along.

There was so much great information in this book, I wish I'd picked it up sooner! So You Want to be a Work at Home Mom is the perfect place to start to gather information about how to start a home-based carreer, and it's a useful guide to those already working at home who could use some tips to make things work smoother. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Organized Book on Starting Your Work-At-Home Business
It is totally possible to start your own business as a stay-at-home mom, just read this book!

The authors give you a road map to getting your business started, identify the key elements you need to get it done, a checklist on how you to market your business and a ton of resources on how to keep it going.

The thing about running my your own business is that you have to be prepared to wear every hat; the worker, the marketer and the manager...in addition to that other job of running your household. Jill and Diane show you how it's possible, but they share with you how they did it!

Throughout the book, the authors share motivational support and spiritual advice in assisting you on your journey, which is truly inspiring. What I most enjoyed is that after all the years since starting my business, I found this book to be a valuable read even to a seasoned business owner.

In my opinion, you can't ever have too many business resources, this is one to add to your shelf!

5-0 out of 5 stars Market Mommy founder recommends this book!
I was genuinely impressed when I picked up "So You Want to be a Work-at-Home-Mom: A Christian's Guide to Starting a Home-Based Business." The book is written by Jill Hart (CWAHM) and Diana Ennen. It went through the basics, from the very beginning and was very comprehensive.
One of the nicest things, I thought, was that it included scripture passages and how they relate to being a work-at-home-mom. It was very insightful! I also enjoyed all the resources that the book provided. It listed various websites and other resources according to the chapter's topic.
Of course I was very interested in the chapter covering Marketing. Hart and Ennen did a great job of outlining the basics when it comes to marketing strategy, as well as giving some great, cost effective tips.
The book also got technical, which was appreciated. It covered business insurance, billing, taxes, trademarks and more. All of the elements covered are critical to first-time business owners. I highly recommend this book for any mom entrepreneur!

I am entirely grateful that I read this one as it gave me several ideas to file. After much prayer and consideration this is one that I'll come back to, to read some of the chapters with more deliberation and goal focus. I highly recommend this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Skeptic Turned Fan
I agreed to review this book months ago! And why did it take months to post? Because you can't just read it, you have to do it! Each chapter ends with assignments that take a lot of mental processing power, and each chapter is filled with links and resources so it takes a lot of research power.

I started the book completely skeptical. The author displays her credentials and experience and I raised my eyebrows. Then I suddenly remembered where I'd seen that name before--Donna Partow. She's the author of "Becoming a Vessel God Can Use," a book that impacted myself and my best friends studying it together in college. This was the same woman?!? Okay, she had my attention and I kept reading...

This is not a book that is easy to put into practice. Making money from home will involve research, creativity, planning, and marketing. She tells you how to go about starting each process but after that it's all up to you, baby.

So, it took me 3 months to finish and I have a notepad of ideas and projects and research to follow up on. And, to be honest, I need to read it again. You won't use everything in the book but even starting small is sure to reap some rewards. Just have a highlighter, a notebook, and the internet by your side before you dare to pick this book up. I give it 5 book lights, and apologies to Tyndale House Publishers for taking so long to post this review after you graciously provided this complimentary copy.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Rewource For Business and Ministry
"Thank you" to Donna Partow and her publisher for sending me a copy of "Making Money From Home" to review for them. I have always been grateful for this generosity, and I am trying to improve at being consistent in taking the time to thank these wonderfully giving individuals in a public forum. I really appreciate your time, effort and expense in making a reviewer copy available to me.

Donna Partow's "Making Money From Home" is a valuable resource for anyone who is looking to start a home-based business, add dimension to an existing business or even establish a presence in cyberspace.I found several bits of information to have value to me personally as a blogger. This resource can be used to enhance your established online persona or actually assist you with planning and starting a business that will make you some form of income.

There is information on legal issues that will whet your whistle to learn more about the laws where you are located so that you can protect your business. There are also chapters on marketing and balancing family life with a home-based business, which can be particularly challenging when your workplace is where you live. Each chapter ends with a list of questions designed to provoke thought about your business and assist with its planning and execution.I can't wait to pass this book to my husband to see what kinds of ideas he can come up with for putting it to even more use.

3-0 out of 5 stars Making Money from Home
When I saw the opportunity from Tyndale to review Making Money from Home, I was super excited!Although I have a full-time job that for the most part, I love, I'd also love to be able to work from home full-time.I already do some work from home, obviously because of the product reviews I do, but I can only do so much when working a regular full-time job.Anyway, I jumped on the opportunity to review this book.

I do have to say that I'm pretty disappointed with the book though. It does have some good information in it, especially since it covers a lot of information for online businesses. However, I was very disappointed with the fact that the book started off with a "Me, Me, Me, I, I, I" feel to it.In other words, it was all about what she's done over the years with regards to making money from home and what her kids have done.To me, that's a huge turn off.Boasting about yourself and your achievements doesn't do anything for me.It's almost like those sales people that say, "I helped XYZ Company save over $100,000,000 while working for them."Annoying!

I do like that she gives websites to visit for additional information in certain areas and how to identify the work at home scams that are all over the place.I like that she also talks about affiliate sites for gaining money on your own website. Most of the sites I already know about, but there are a couple that I will be checking out.She also talks about how you can make money from these types of sites, with regards to how they pay you (by click, by page load, etc).Another great topic she discusses is social networking and how to bring them into your business.

This book was a review copy sent to me by Tyndale House Publishers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Resource
Have you ever wanted to work from home? And be successful at it? Successful author, entrepreneur and ministry leader Donna Partow has been doing so very well for over 20 years. Her latest book, Making Money from Home, is filled with fantastic advice, tips, suggestions and plain old common sense. It covers topics such as: Getting Started, Time Management, Money Management, Priorities, Options, Marketing, Business Basics, Sales, Social Networking and (most importantly) Family Time.

The current economic crisis our Nation is in, has shown us (if we didn't already know) there is no job security and we are responsible for our own financial well-being. People are starting out every day, and succeeding in, operating a business of their own. There is a ton of information out there on how to, but what is really accurate. It is imperative to find a trusted source and build from there. With Making Money from Home, we find that it is possible to have a profitable business of our own, without being all alone. It is a wonderful resource that will benefit both new entrepreneurs and those who would like to take their business to the next level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do You Have What it Takes to Make Money from Home?
Let's face it, times are tough. Who can't use a little extra money to help make ends meet? Making Money from Home by Donna Partow is the breath of fresh air I'd been looking for. It revived my Entrepreneurial spirit that had been lying dormant for several years.

Entrepreneurs have been around since before America became a country, but that coupled with a faith in Christ was the life blood that made this country great. Donna refreshes the idea with all the new technology that makes marketing so much easier: e-Bay, Pay Pal, direct and indirect marketing. She covers the fundamentals of each facet of running your own successful business with web addresses for additional help. From carving out space for your home office to paying taxes, Donna's book can take you from idea to working business in clear easy to follow steps.

Tips are sprinkled liberally through out the book. Donna rounds out each chapter with questions to ask yourself and an assignment. The questions will get you thinking about your business and sharpen your focus. There are assignments that will can be as easy as setting a date to open a PayPal account or coming up with names for your business to checking into zoning laws for your home based business.

Donna also touches on multiple streams of income, an idea that runs counter to the mainstream mentality of one job for life or working for a large corporation. Donna has been on this track, running her own businesses, for twenty years. In order to survive that long, she must be doing something right. I have read quite a few aritcles and books on this subject, and this is definitely one of the best. Want to start enjoying the freedom that made this country great? Grab this book and you'll have everything it takes to launch your new business.

Tyndale has provided me with this complimentary book in exchange for my opinion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommened
This book helps you organize all the thoughts you already have on how to start an on-line business. It's easy to read, not brain surgery and full of little tit bits that you are absolutely going to need. I found his advise on building your website very helpful, even though I had a bunch of my own ideas.

When I had finished reading, I felt more confident than ever that I knew what I was doing, and was ready to make the next steps.

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning: Very elementary
Read the book in an hour and was extremely disappointed. The author has one whole chapter devoted to how to create a home office. If you can't even figure out how to create a home office, you should NOT start a business.

The rest of the first half of the book is whether to start a sole proprietorship, LLC, S Corp, C corp, and that you should get trademarks, copyrights, and proper licenses. Skip everything he says, your lawyer will give you all the advice you need.

The 12th chapter is a perfect example of how disappointed I was in the author. The 12th chapter is called "Expanding your Business" and the books title is called "How to START a Home-Based Online Retail Business". Think about that for a second.

The last chapter is almost comical. It is about how to keep good relationships with your friends/family and have balance in your life. If I wanted a Tony Robbins or Steven Covey book I would have bought one. I thought I was buying a book on starting an online retail business.

I couldn't have been more disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great start...
This book was very helpful for me when I first started my online business.Sure, its not going to tell you exactly what to do, but it will point you in the right direction. You will find basic information on licenses and taxes, starting a website, time management and so on.I do think this book is a little dated though. The author started his web business during the very beginning of the world wide web going mainstream, and so he wasn't up against thousands of other people who were trying to do the exact same thing. In a lot of ways, I think he had it so much easier in the mid '90s than we do today.

You will need to find additional and updated information eventually - especially for marketing your business, but this book will give you a good, basic start.

3-0 out of 5 stars making money

I am still listening. I got the audio version.
I consider it really slow and full of self advertising.
He could easily explain everrything he did in 10 chapter in only one chapter. If you have a lot of time, get this book. If you are looking for a writer to go to the point right away, look elsewhere.
The writer wrote this book to get people to visit his website.
The good: I learned a lot. He gives good recommendations as far as who you should hire to do everything to start your business.

4-0 out of 5 stars Touches on Important areas, leaves some gaps
A found this to be a general overview and "get your feet wet" book on opening your online retail store. I thought there was a little too much storyline and not enough in-depth information. For example, when filing for a Trademark/Servicemark (so nobody can use your name or symbol) the author only touched on this subject. It really didn't go into the online process of applying for a Trademark/Servicemark, which is very in-depth and very important information.
Chapter 7- "What you Need to Know about Creating Your Website" definitely needs to be expanded and the author needs to elaborate. I think he should've used more examples on SEO (search engine optimization) a critical area in the survival of your website. More specific tips for increasing traffic to your site is definitely needed.
The author did a pretty good job on explaining shipping methods and establishing merchant accounts (visa/mc) and what to expect with fees. Chapter 9- "Getting Paid" was helpful.
Lastly, less fuzz on creating balance in your life, creating personal time, making time for family and friends. I think I needed more meat and potatoes with this book, less cranberry sauce. It's worth picking up the book, because it's practically the only book available of its kind, but keep in mind this book will mainly serve as an outline for starting your business, the rest is up to you. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Ideas Only - No Information
If you are trying to brainstorm for ideas on what TYPE of home-based business to start, then this is A book for you.(Only the first of many you will need to research....)

However, most potential entreprenuers already know what type of business they want, based on personal experience, interests, level of education, etc. This book is in no way helpful for those who fall into this category, because there is so little information on how to start up that business.

Each chapter is a brief overview of a type of home-based business. There were only two chapters that drew my eye, again based on personal experience and interest. After reading that I could be a home-based bookkeeper or a home-based interior decorator (information I already knew), I put the book away forever. A waste of time and money.

This is NOT a detailed informative reference for actual start-up, and as such is not very helpful."Everything you need to know about getting started on the road to success" will be found in other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Home Business
Lots of great information in this book. If you are interested in starting a home business this book really helps you put things together.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good First Step
I conduct workshops based on my book "Capitalizing On Being Woman Owned" and in almost every class 30% of the attendees are in the first stages of starting a business or even just thinking about it.This book would be a good exploratory resource for them.Ms. Huff provides practical information for many micro-businesses.Part of the book is a "how-to" with explanations for making critical decisions. It is a great first exposure to starting a business and provides resources that will give the details. It's probably not for the woman who wants to build an international corporation. But it is for the woman who wants to start a small business that suits her personality and situation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a book for the 21st century
I think that Ms Huff should rethink her strategies here.
This book is okay but does not really deal with the realities of the 21st century.
If you're looking for a book that faces the realities and challenges of today then you should read Untapped Wealth Discovered by Jeff Marquis and Kerry Harrison. This book shows you how to find those businesses that can survive and prosper in our economy. It's a book that pays special attentions to the needs and goals of women. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Just the Facts....
This book covers the basics about starting a photography business, including the types of business, your tax obligations, record keeping, etc...

It is about the business of photography, not the art of photography. There is no inspiration here, no success stories, no beautiful imagery, just information about starting a business.I think the book could have actually been condensed into a 2 or 3 page to-do list.Nevertheless it is not a bad book and it does contain all the basic information about starting a business.

If you want inspiration and marketing ideas, I highly recommend Sandy Puc's "Guide to Children's Portrait Photography".If you want specific ideas on how to grow your photography business, I highly recommend Vik Orenstein's Book, "Building Your Photography Business".And if you want a very meaty book filled with insightful articles on a range of topics from copyright to digital asset management to marketing, I highly recommend the Professional Business Practices in Photography book by the American Society of Media Photographers (no imagery in this book;pure text)

Also, if you are just starting out, I recommend visiting your local small business development center, if you have one. They have a library of books you can use for free, and staff who can guide you through the local and state regulations that are pertinent to you.

Well anyway, good luck making your photography dreams come true!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good basic place to start for a home-based business.
A good basic place to start for a home-based business. This book got me actively thinking on my needs and desires to start a business. 5-0 out of 5 stars Easy language with technical details.
This book covered a lot of things I had already started doing on my own, like the importance of an EIN. But also found many important potential problems I had not come across in my own home based business, like the liability insurance section. I liked this instruction much better than the DUMMIES type books. Only thing I haven't seen in this book is section on making a business plan. I avoid the technical stuff like a house cat avoids a water hose, but my partner like numbers too much and he is handling the business plan to"road map" projections based on our first year of business.Wish it had a CD with templates but they are easy enough to copy out of the book. Great buy!
