5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
Well written and packed full of information! Very helpful, I wish I would have bought this before leaving my full time job to start my own business. So many things that I wish I would have had set up before hand. I am implementing much of it now. I have bought several books regarding running a design business from home, I recommend this one over all the others!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Thorough Is Lacking in Only One Area
As the previous reviewers have written, this book covers day-to-day information you need to run a DTP (or graphic design) business.

Have you thought about creating a policies & guidelines sheet for your customers? If you don't, you'll be sorry after a client blames you because they didn't proofread their job before it went to the printer. If you had the P&G to review with them, you would be able to bring it up BEFORE it becomes a crisis.

This book is loaded with examples like this; not just the ancedotes, but the forms that help your business run smoothly. As I mentioned, this book was lacking in only one area--financial recordkeeping was a mere two pages in this book. That subject could be a 200 page book in and of itself.Kursmark is so clever at writing about this subject in a friendly and conversational manner, I found myself disappointed not to get her help on recordkeeping.

That said, this book is highly recommended based on what it does cover, and I'm off to find a book to explain how to track expenses and the like.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent so far!
I have only had time to read about 15 pages of this book, but so far it is fantastic! When I read more pages I will rate again, but like I said, this book is great. From what I have readso far, I would highly recommend this book. The author is very straightforward and her writing style is wonderful - easy to understand and down to earth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very effective resource
As a pro DTP & graphic artist, I didn't think there would be much more to learn to eliminate my employer and sell the services I did already directly to customers. In fact, thinking I was an expert of graphic design & all of the software made me mistakenly believe I was ready to pass out biz cards and start selling my services and wondered how this book could possibly be 200 pages for something so simple. I was quite wrong, however, and I'm so glad I read this book and got aware of how much more successful I could be by following the author's plan. There is a lot of lessons learned the hard way the author shared which would save anyone a lot of money and a lot of trouble, not to mention lost business. There is a lot of planning that needs to happen before one passes out there first bizcard and I would not have had a clue were it not for this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource!
The author of this book has done an excellent job in providing the 'would-be desktop publisher' with lots of great information on how to get started in this business. The book is very clear and concise, with a sense of humor. It provides information step-by-step so it's very easy to follow. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Home Based!
When you read "home-based", believe it.It's geared toward those who want to turn their living room into an antiques store and comes complete with tips on remodeling your home. With that said, much here could be applied to those who want to start a shop outside their home or sell on the internet.
This book covers the "nuts & bolts" of running a business, from writing the business plan to advertising and merchandising. It also covers pricing, displaying, and other ways to make money in antiques. It covers all bases on where to get stock. All in all, it seems to be very thorough.
I wasn't looking to turn my living room into a store and didn't expect a book on basics of starting a business. However after reading it I've found this book full of useful information. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it!
If you're a person who's been searching online for a "real" home based business this is the book for you. I was delightfully surprised to see some of the idea's I've had rolling around in my head on paper. It's a totally different experience to take the book with you and read it as opposed to looking at a computer screen.

One suggestion I've never seen before was to have your own art gallery in a room in your home.Of course if your home looks like Martha Stewart's that's no problem. The author suggests signing the artists to contracts so that you both make money when the art sells.I think that's a wonderful idea.Of course if you're not really keen on the idea of having strangers tour your back bedroom you could rent a small office space and advertise, advertise, advertise.

Another idea I really loved was running a doggie day care center!!To those who are strictly business minded these ideas may sound far fetched but to those of us who long to break out of the mold these ideas light a fire to our creativity. One more business suggestion I thought was interesting is the laundry service.Even if you don't have a washer and dryer you could pick up people's laundry and drive it to the laundrymat.I know I've tried to bribe people to do my own laundry!!

All in all this book is a worth while read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Practical Book!
I think this is a great book!!Another reviewer said that the Bison breeding wasn't very feasible. On my country bike rides I pass a house that has bison.I never could figure out why they had them? Now I know.

Many of these suggestions you will see listed online but there's something about being able to hold the book in your hands and dream about all of the wonderful things you could do.You can dream small or large. For example if you have an extra room in your home or an outside attached room you could contact artist's and sell their work on commission from your own gallery.I really like that idea.

If you've always dreamed about being your own boss while staying at home this is the book for you.Start slow and steady.Just take on what you can handle.Do you have a washing machine and dryer? You could wash people's laundry.I'd never thought of that idea but I know in India this is quite common.I don't want to give away too many ideas.I just love this book. When I first got it I thought this would be one of those books I look at and decide to auction off.Nope.This one's a keeper!

I really loved that you don't have to have advanced degrees to go into business for yourself.Don't let people discourage you from earning a decent income on your own using your own brain power.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's okay...but has a limited audience
This book really starts out good, it has a lot of very informative info. With topics like "A Strategy for Success" and "Franchises, Distributorships, MLMs and Other Home Business Opportunities" you canfind a lot of useful information.Ms. Huff explains the business process,as well as all the legalities surrounding small-businesses.That's thefirst part of the book.

The second part of the book is all the jobs, yes,all 101 of them, and their descriptions. She includes very useful infolike start-up costs, estimated income, things needed to run the business, and where to get more information.

My only complaint with this book isthat it covers a broad amount of job areas and not that well. There arejobs that she left out and those that weren't explained very well, and somethat weren't even useful.

This book is not going to help you figure outwhat your interests are and what is the perfect home-based business.Ifyou have a little interest in just about everything from arts and crafts tocomputers, and want to know what you can do with your talents, then you maywant to pick this up in the library.

It's a good reference guide, andreally, that's ALL it is.I don't regret that I bought the book, I justwish I knew what I was buying before I set such high expectations.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a cool book
This is a really interesting book, although some of the businesses arekind of far-fetched (bison breeder???) but the ideas are cool. I wouldreccomend this more as a guide to side careers, most of them are risky ortake a lot of time to get off the ground. Also most of them seem to bebased around larger cities' needs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative!!
Good day,

I was looking into starting my own home based basket company. And this book was very informative. From how to find clients to how to manage your time. It is a great book for anyone thinking of starting into this business and even has tips of how to organize yourself wether its part time or full time.

Thanks again!

4-0 out of 5 stars gift basket review
I found this book to be very helpful. I am in the beginning stages of starting a Home Based Gift Basket Business and this book really opened my eyes to all the energy that goes into opening a successful business. I have another book by her and it is just as informative.

4-0 out of 5 stars how to start a home-based gift basket business
I really enjoyed this book. Ms. George-Frazier provided a jump start for creating and running a sucessful home-based gift basket business. I found that the contents contained all the needed steps for starting this home-based business. The author communicated her information in an encouraging, "best friend" manner, guiding the reader in a step-by-step process: the creation of business plans, the profit factor, financial resources (startup), product and supply contacts, industry fairs, networking, marketing for consumers, extending marketing base -- this book is useful and informative.Plus, I was really impressed that it was a great follow-up to a prior purchase on gift basket-making--also by the same author. The only drawback seemed to be in small amount of color display featured. This, however, did not diminish any of the great information the book itself provided. I look forward to collecting more books by Ms. Shirley George-Frazier.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and Basic.
This isa great " simple and basic book, covering all you need to start this type of business. Some day I will put what I learned from it into play. I recommend it and the author's other ideas and products.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY Good Book! A1 Rating
I have read ALOT of business books over the years and I have to say that of them all, this is on my list of referred books. I got it from the library and here on Amazon to buy a copy for myself. The author actually covers topics that other "how to" books miss out on especially the legal side of business. The author has researched the mail order industry quite well and writes in plain English. I see copies on sale for $3 or so. Grab one!!! If you can't make a go in your own business, surely you can get your $3 back (or more) from someone who is willing to set goals, write goals, and achieve goals. That's what business (and success) is all about.

1-0 out of 5 stars very underwhelming
I bought this book since it had the perfect-sounding title. When I got it home and started thumbing through it, i realized it has some glaring omissions. For example, in the list of options for business structure, it omits LLC.Also it barely glosses over the arduous process for getting a merchant account to be able to accept credit cards. These are both very important issues that should be addressed!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good tips and insight, but not applicable to all
Read this book from the library as ongoing market research. The book hit on many good points for where to begin, following effectiveness, etc., but felt somewhat outdated in other parts - the author places a lot of emphasis on using the fax versus email/online.Also would have liked to see more about sending mail for different types of services & products.

I recommend this book as part of research for mail-order businesses, but be sure to include other, more varied books as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Great Ideas
How to Start a Home-Based Mail-Order Business is, at its core, a how-to.But, it is not satisfied with providing the basic bones and goes on to provide excellent elaboration and detail that helps answer questions.Well-written and researched. It covers all the basics--marketing, sales, promotion, etc, without getting bogged down into details that could lead Fiumara away from her basic thrust of the book.Given how much today's world relies on the Internet, her chapter on Success in Cyberspace is especially helpful. While it has its own chapter, using the Internet to promote your business is so critical that I would recommend Guerilla PR: Wired, which covers that same subject far more in-depth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Step-By-Step Insider Information
Most books on starting a mail order business are written by men who claim you can make $100,000 or more at home. This book is different.

How To Start a Home-Based Mail Order Business is written by a woman who gives you all the information you need to succeed in a mail order business -- but without all the bull. Georganne Fiumara takes you by the hand in the very first chapter and leads you to success, step-by-step. Thanks to the author, my home business dream has come true.

I especially appreciated the chapter called Success In Cyberspace because most successful mail order businesses now include web promotion. The author's web site, HomeWorkingMom.com, shows that she knows what she is talking about.

I took her advice and put my business online at MoneyandShopping.com and have not looked back since.

If you are looking for a straight-forward, insider's guide to mail order, this is the book to buy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good... but dated
The internet has completely transformed the world since 1997, and this book (understandably) contains only cursory information on the subject. That's why this version is out of print and cheap. Spend the extra $$ and get the updated version (2007) of this book!

I found this book to be highly informative, and well put together.Like most Idiot's Guides, it was easy to read, just full of great information.I'd recommend this book to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars A casual and informative presentation of a serious topic
The three (3) most important areas of any book are its content, writing style, and organization.Weltman's book is superb on all three counts. It is a detailed, succinct, point-by-point introduction to a growing andpopular topic in today's fast-paced, changing society.

Each chapterbegins by explaining what you will learn, then explains key concepts atleast twice in the middle, and finally summarizes the least you need toknow about each aspect of the home business.

The book itself is dividedinto six useful parts, plus appendices filled with helpful information. Each part focuses on a particular aspect of running a home business, suchas: your reasons for wanting your own business, the types of businesses youcan run (franchises, ready-made businesses, existing businesses, or yourown pet project), financing the home business, setting up the home office, running the home office, and finally common personal issues unique torunning the home office and scaling up.

Broadly speaking, Weltman devotesan equal amount of space to each topic. However, some topics, such astaxation (any advanced student should keep a copy of that particular infovery close by) receive a lot of attention, while others, such as planningand budgeting the start-up, are clearly de-emphasized.The book alsoincludes a lot of useful information in little boxes on every other pagesuch as entrepreneurial statistics, key business terminology, addedinformation (based on experience) to help perform a particular aspect ofyour business better, and things to avoid while in business.

In termsof content, the book is packed with plenty of information to get youstarted.Though the book is very comprehensive, more advanced readers mayfind it to be a bit redundant at times.Key terms, concepts, andabsolutely need to know information are repeated often ( for the quicklearner, ad nauseum) in each chapter. This use of repetition, however, does not weaken the book, as repetition is a proven method of learning newconcepts.

The book is heavily laden with useful contact information andresources.Weltman presents the essentials, the absolute bare bonesstructural framework for the typical home-based business. The book's majorstrength is its presentation of key issues in very general, easy tounderstand terms. You are not inundated with a lot of excess, uselessresources and you are slowly and casually guided through each phase of yourstart-up.Weltman also thoughtfully includes good federal and stateresources one can actually use.

For the initiate, everything isdiscussed simply and clearly, as if the author is sitting right in front ofyou chatting over a delicious cup of Seattle's Best Coffee (sorry folks, but Starbuck's just doesn't cut it), but the more clever may find the booka slow and plodding read (this is a thick book, folks). Now, the book'smajor weaknesses lie in its utter lack of information on selling methods, management techniques (classic, coordinator, or craftsman), structuringemployment contracts (especially for independent contractors), scheduling, getting and keeping customers, and operating a global business (my personalinterest) from home.

Weltman skillfully introduces all the things oneshould consider when starting a home based business. It is the approach Iwould take with those who want to start a business but have no idea as tohow to start. Those who are really serious about starting their own homebusiness should not stop with Weltman's book.Look to other books topresent you with the meat on such topics as contracts, selling, andmanaging employees.More advanced readers can skip this book and startwith Karen Cheney and Lesley Alderman's How to Start a Successful HomeBusiness. ... This book is o.k.It has a few good ideas.I purchased it for two reasons: 1. It was written in 2010 thinking the ideas would be very up to date.2. 1000 ideas would give me several leads to go on.The author does have 1000 ideas, but I found some were very close to other ideas listed.Other than some typo's it is very easy to read and understand the author's thoughts on each idea listed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Glad I bought the book with DVD
After reading the whole book in a afternoon/evening I popped the DVD in the next day and was immediately happy I had bought the package. The book gave me tons of information to work with and a great step-by-step approach which I really like.

The DVD gave me the opportunity to see things in action. The client interview which I was worried about seemed easy after watching the example interview. The forms, ads, and examples took the guesswork out of the most significant aspects of the start-up. The writing style was easy, fun, and most of all, informative.

I'm pretty excited about getting started. I don't write reviews but this book has got me motivated so I'm here to give the author some well deserved credit. Oh and the author has his own website and message forum to answer your start-up questions! Pretty cool. ... Read more

Product Description
American business is in the midst of cataclysmic change. Corporations, re-engineering themselves to compete in the new global marketplace, lay off millions of employees, then outsource the services they performed, often to the former employees themselves. Disillusioned employees are voluntarily leaving the corporate nest in record numbers to set up small businesses of their own. Technological advances make these tiny operations not only competitive but often the optimal provider of services for the next century. These forces have led to an exponential growth of home-based businesses. Generally, these new entrepreneurs already possess the skills necessary to bring their products and services to life. What most lack is practical knowledge of how to position and market themselves. Understandably, most do not want to be marketers; many have a downright aversion to this crucial activity. And many will fail - not because of their product, but because of failure to promote it effectively. This book can help to change that. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have marketing tool!
So far this is one of my favorite books. The connection made between marketing for small businesses and guerrilla warfare is brilliant. You my friends are the guerrillas. The giant corporations are your competitors, and you can hit them by being quick, responsive and inventive. Your strength is in being small.

The idea of finding your niche in the marketplace is an amazing one. How many stories have you read on other people's blogs or in entrepreneurial magazines about people who made a few million selling upscale clothes for little boys, lotions and shampoos for babies made with all natural products or jars of different, fancy types of peanut butter. Those are just a few of the stories I've heard lately.

I've started thinking that I really enjoy the marketing side of business. I can't wait until our business is further in its development. Then, I can use everything I've learned in this book, about how to use my time and money wisely, to ensure that those most likely to be my clients know about my business.

Anyone that owns a startup business should get this book. It has so many great ideas, you can really customize your marketing strategy to your business.

4-0 out of 5 stars Straight forward, easy-to-read. Great Supplimental Work.
I picked up this book on a whim. Turns out it was a good choice, even now, years after its first publication.

The easy format make it simple to scan through and, if you're like most business owners, time is precious so it helps.

The array of marketing materials it covered, plus the simple "case studies" kept it interesting.

I'd recommend this to home-based business owners looking to expand on their marketing techiniques. It can be daunting to launch a new campaign or seek out another avenue, this book takes some of the tension away while familiarizing the reader with his options.

3-0 out of 5 stars bored, bored, bored
This book was completely outclassed by Michael Levine's Guerrilla PR Wired.Don't read anything else; it's a waste of time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Boost your business brain-power!
Can you and your home-based business really compete with large corporate competitors who have big advertising budgets and publicity campaigns? Levinson and Godin say yes, you can! Guerrilla Marketing for the Home-Based Business explains in detail how you can use your size and location to your advantage, by positioning your business to serve niche markets, offering superior and personalized customer service, generating word of mouth, and making maximum use of low cost publicity tools. The book is peppered throughout with real-life examples of entrepreneurs who have successfully applied Levinson's techniques -- this is just one of the ways Levinson and Godin manage to brilliantly combine marketing theories and concepts with solid practical advice. I guarantee you'll be reeling with new ideas and enthusiasm for your business after reading the first chapter!

2-0 out of 5 stars Obvious
This book could be one of the "Dummies" or "Idiots" books because everything it offers is pretty obvious. This book covers so many topics, it can't go into any depth on any of them. For example, the author says seminars are a great way to get business but he offers only half a page on how to do them. He tells you how to get a trademark without discussing why they may or not be necessary. Also, there are way too many irrelevant stories about millionaires like Michael Dell (who cares how many square feet his mansion is?) and Jeff Bezos. If you already have a business in mind, you have to wade through a lot of chapters about finding the perfect business for you. However, if you haven't a clue about which business to start, the book offers only a surface idea of several home businesses. So it's not useful to either customer.
