Product Description
Targeted for small business owners interested in how the Web canextend their business reach and profitability, this book explains howto create an online presence for an existing small business.Manybusiness owners want to become part of the e-commerce revolution, buthave unrealistic expectations that a Web site will instantly performmiracles for their company. Maria Langer includes real-life examplesof small business Web sites that do‹and don't‹work.Topicscovered include: Building your Web site, reducing marketing costs, site setup, Web design and content, and how to work with searchengines to make your site easy to find. Technology described withinthis book can be used by anyone, regardless of computer platform.Amazon.com Review
Putting Your Small Business on the Web explains to owners and managers of small businesses (say, those with fewer than 25 employees) what is involved in publishing a company Web site. Mostly, it's about how to get a Web presence--although it does explain a bit about how the site can serve customers after hours and help bring in new business--so that it focuses mostly on the products and services that you'll need to do just that.

All of your options are discussed, even those that might seem obviously inappropriate to someone with more Web publishing experience; for example, what you need if you want to operate a Web server on your own premises, and why that's not a good idea for most small businesses. You also get realistic estimates of how much all of this is going to cost you. Occasionally, a petty factual error pops up (FTP is File Transport Protocol, not File Transfer Protocol), but it's a small issue. Besides, this isn't a technical how-to book: it's an explanation of what you need, where you should look for it, what you should expect to pay, and what your site should be able to do as a result. --David Wall

Topics covered: Web publishing for small businesses: why build a Web site in the first place, what features to specify in your design, how to host your site, how to select and work with a designer, options for monitoring activity on your site, registering your site with search engines, and writing pages yourself (both at the code level and by using design tools). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It's about time!
Enabling is the best word I can find to describe this book. It enables the "newbie" small business owner to understand e-commerce. There are so many books out there about e-commerce. This is the first one that I have found that speaks directly to the small business owner. Ms. Langer only includes pertinent vocabulary and doesn't overwhelm the reader with acronyms. She speaks to real people. I recomend this book for those who have gotten lost in the hype of e-commerce. This book will lift you out of the acronym soup and paint a clear picture of what the web can and can't do for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book could have saved me $1,200!
Why wasn't this book out a year ago when I got conned by a Web "consultant"? The chapter that explains how to work with consultants could have prevented me from making a very costly mistake! This book has TONS of information that explains what the Web is and how it can benefit a small business in plain English terms that anyone can understand. It also provides lots of tips for building a Web site -- even some info about doing it yourself! And believe it or not, it's even fun to read! Buy it!

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Starter for Small Business...
We always look forward to Maria Langer's books. "Putting Your Small Business on the Web" is a delightful departure from many of Maria's other more technical books, giving the busy business person a quick, clear and inspiring starter kit for launching a business web site. Maria handholds even the 'old timers' with her easy to digest introduction to what the web can and cannot do for small business. You'll get a primer on web serving options, designing web site and then managing the site keeping it up to date. The sections on "Working with a Web Site Designer" and FTP are well worth the cover price alone. __ This is not a thousand page tome that will bog you down with too much techno-mumbo-jumbo like many of the other eBiz books out there. If you're thinking about getting your small business on the web, get this book FIRST. I think you'll be happy you did. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Probably more than you want or need to know
Overall I think this book is above average. However, the first portion of the book seems bent on defining the hazy difference between the web and the Internet. Why so much time is spent on this is beyond me.The readerdoesn't really get into the useful meat of the book until the second 100pages.The reader also needs to absorb the book with a grain of salt. While some of the information written was useful at the time it went topress, the web is so dynamic that a lot of the information is outdated now. In the end, I am not so sure that the authors truly tell you how to launcha business on the web.The authors spend way too much time on webnetiquette, Marketing 101, and the minutia of the net - the global goalseems lost at times.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Internet Business book I have seen yet.
Their details of which businesses are suitable for the Internet, and what mistakes most companies are making make for fascinating reading. A lot of what they have written I know to be 100% accurate from my own work, and some other ideas they came up with I will be trying soon! If you only get 1 internet business book, it had better be this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars All-around great book for beginners and web gurus alike!
Don't let it's big size fool you-- David Cook and Deborah Seller's second edition is great for anyone looking into (or already into) the world of online business."Launching a Business on the Web" looks at the success potential of the World Wide Web from the eyes of two successful experts, giving you tips on choosing a provider, where you can get the best advertising, Net security, attractive web design, and everything else you need to set up shop or expand your business horizons. If you do ANY business on the web (or plan to), this book is the key to successful Net commerce ... ONLINE COMMUNITIES HANDBOOK: BUILDING YOUR BUSINESS & BRAND ON THE WEB provides any business owner with the keys to building online community support, from creating brand loyalty and bringing in new business to using free advertising opportunities and using communities to uncover market trends and new ideas. From social networks for brand-building to online etiquette in business promotions, ONLINE COMMUNITIES HANDBOOK: BUILDING YOUR BUSINESS & BRAND ON THE WEB is a winner.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Social Networking Bible for Any Business

This book is an absolute must-read for any business wanting to take the dip into Web 2.0 and social networking.Authors Buss and Strauss walk businesses through the benefits and drawbacks of creating an interactive web presence. They completely ignore the technical aspects of how to do this since the technical aspects are for , well, technicians. This book's audience is business owners or marketing professionals looking to use the web to create a dialogue with their customers.

With copious real world samples from companies both big and small, businesses will, after reading this book, leave with the attitude"I can do that."Too many books cover the nitty-gritty details of how to create the "ultimate" or "killer" interactive community. This book eschews those grandiose ideas and focuses on the basics of how and why conversations about your brand help your company.A case is created for getting interactive on the web and then a variety of ways of doing this are examined. They cover the tricky and often deal-breaking topic of "What if people say bad things about us?"They examine ways to use these complaints to your advantage as well as how to minimize the reason web users would publicly attack your brand.

The writing in the book avoids both trendy and technical business jargon.Small business owners without MBAs will see the value of this book as well as the seasoned business veteran who simply doesn't know what all the fuss is about. Each chapter ends with a "nutshell" that reviews that topic and helps the business person create and plan.

The best part of the book, like dessert, was at the end. They looked at eight different online communities and interviewed executives so that the reader could learn from their successes and failures.I wish I had this book when my computer repair business first dipped its toes in social networking as I would have avoided many costly mistakes.

Non-profits may not find much value in this book as its primary focus is profitable ventures, but as a board member of a non-profit, I did get some great ideas. My only other concern in this book is the real-world examples weren't based in the US or in English. This limited my familiarity with the sites mentioned as well as my ability to go to those sites and examine them.

Highly Recommended! ... Read more
