Canoeing found its beginnings as a recreational sport in the early 1800s, thanks in large part to Englishman John MacGregor. MacGregor spent his days canoeing the rivers and lakes of Europe, and later wrote a popular series of books describing his journeys. Many people imitated MacGregor, and in 1866 he founded the Royal Canoe Club to encourage interest in the sport. Quickly, the sport caught on in Europe and North America, and in 1924 delegates from national canoeing associations met to establish an international body and formulate rules for competitive racing around the globe. That same year, canoe/kayak made its first Olympic appearance in Paris with an exhibition regatta.

Of course, kayaks have been around for thousands of years, constructed principally from whalebone and sea-lion skin by Inuits in the northern-most reaches of the Americas. But British barrister John MacGregor is credited with bringing the craft into modern times when he designed a similar boat after studying those early prototypes. The kayak caught on, and by the second half of the 1800s, canoe regatta had begun in England. Flatwater canoeing and kayaking was first welcomed to the Olympic fold in Berlin in 1936, having been a demonstration sport in 1924.

Extractions: Ananova: Olympic sport guides - Canoe and Kayak A guide to the Olympic sport of Canoeing/Kayaking Technical details There are two types of canoes used at the Games - Canadian canoes and kayaks. Canadian canoes are open-decked for flatwater racing and closed for slalom and paddled by competitors in a kneeling position with a single-bladed paddle. Kayaks have closed decks, pointed bow and stern and are propelled by competitors in a sitting position with a long, double bladed paddle. Kayaks also have a rudder for flatwater races. The flatwater, or sprint courses are marked out in lanes of 9m and the water must be still and at least 2m deep. Automatic start and photo-finish equipment are used at Olympic Games. The object is to be first across the finish line. Umpires are at the start and the finish as well as a seven-person jury on hand to handle any disputes but the photo-finish camera is the final arbiter. Slalom canoeists need good timing and control to keep the boat on the fastest line through the 25 gates (at least six must be upstream) of the 300-500m course of turbulent water. If competitors touch the gates they incur five penalty points. Fifty penalty points are given if competitors fail to go through a gate. The winner has the best combination of fastest time and lowest or no penalty points.
Extractions: OLYMPIC HISTORY Though staged as a demonstration sport in 1924, canoeing only became an official medal sport - for men only - in front of Adolf Hitler in 1936, whose loyalties may well have been torn as Austria won three titles to Germany's two. Canoes, kayaks and folding canoes were all in evidence, but the Olympic life of the folding canoe was a brief one - it would never be seen again. Europeans remain the dominant nation in the sport, with Canadians causing the occasional upset. Women had to wait until after the Second World War, at the London Games of 1948 to take part in canoeing, and then only in one race, the 500 metres Kayak singles. A pairs race was added in Rome, in 1960, but the fours only came in in 1984. From the early 1970s until the fall of the Berlin Wall, the German Democratic Republic dominated the sport, their achievements long tainted, however, by evidence of a state-run doping programme.

Extractions: Canoeing began as a recreational sport in the 19th century with an English barrister, John MacGregor. MacGregor designed his own Eskimo-style kayak in 1845, and spent much of the next quarter-century taking the boat on extended trips across the rivers and lakes of Europe. During this time, he wrote a popular series of books and delivered lectures describing his canoeing experiences. MacGregor's adventures spawned many imitators, and in 1866 he founded the Royal Canoe Club to encourage further interest in the new sport. The club held its first regatta the following year and by 1868 boasted 300 enthusiasts and a fully realized set of rules to govern competitive canoe racing. The sport's popularity spread through Europe and North America, and the New York Canoe Club was founded in 1871.

Knight, Charles W. Havens and John F. Larcombe won every kayak event and finished a close second behind the Canadians in the four canoe events. The International Olympic Committee rejected canoeing as an Olympic sport in the IXth and Xth Olympiad because only six nations participated in canoeing competitions. The international canoeing association, however, continued to petition the IOC to recognize canoeing as an Olympic sport. It was added as a full medal sport in 1936, when 20 nations competed in nine events. The best finish for a U.S. Team member was by Ernie Riedel, who won a bronze in the K-1 10,000m. Because of World War II, only 17 nations entered paddlers in the 1948 Olympics. With the first post-war Olympiad came the newly organized International Canoe Federation (ICF), as well as a gold medal and two silver medals for U.S. paddlers. Steve Lysak and Steve Macknowski captured the gold medal in the C-2 10,000m and the silver in the C-2 1,000m. Frank Havens won the other U.S. silver medal, in the C-1 10,000m.
