The medal was Fischer's ninth as she won the event for the second straight time and for the third time in the last four Olympics. Also, a canoe paddle has a flat blade on only one end of the paddle shaft while the kayak paddle is equipped with a curved blade on each end. When you watch the Games also notice that the slalom canoes, unlike regular canoes, are decked , meaning there is a spray skirt that keeps water out of the boat. Also, the slalom canoes and kayaks are shorter and wider than their sprint counterparts in order to be more maneuverable.

In 1924, delegates from all the national associations which had sprung up in the preceding half-century met in Copenhagen to establish an international body, the Internationella Representantskapet for Kanotidrott (IRK) to formulate rules for competitive racing worldwide. In the same year, canoe/kayak made its first Olympic appearance with an exhibition regatta in Paris, as Americans Harry T. Knight, Jr., Karl M. Knight, Charles W. Havens and John F. Larcombe swept the kayak events and finished second behind the Canadian team in all four canoe events. After the success of the exhibition, the IRK looked to get recognition for canoeing as a full medal sport, but the International Olympic Committee (IOC) rejected their proposal for the 1928 Amsterdam Games and again in Los Angeles in 1932.

Extractions: Fax: 770.287.3444 The 1996 Olympic Canoe / Kayak and Rowing Venue Gainesville, Georgia In 1992, Gainesville Hall 96 Roundtable chaired by Jim Mathis was formed with other community leaders to seek Olympic opportunities. Jack Pyburn, a local rower, learned the rowing venue the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (ACOG) had selected was in jeopardy. Jim and Jack worked to convince the International Rowing Federation to bring the venue to Lanier. ACOG was approached and lobbied by Jim and Steve Gilliam, Vice Chair of Gainesville Hall 96. They were successful. The full Gainesville Hall 96 Committee consisted of 35 dedicated community members who provided immeasurable support through providing a functioning office, merchandising, volunteers, Olympic housing, test event support, club support, fundraising, legal advice, and anything else that might arise! Executive Director, Mary Hart Wilheit, gracefully managed the office. Following the 1996 Olympic Games Gainesville Hall 96 became the Gainesville Hall 96 Foundation consisting of 12 members chaired by Jim Mathis. The boathouse, timing tower and racecourse remain as a permanent Olympic legacy - a gift to the local community. The Venue is co-owned by the City of Gainesville and Hall County, and is leased to the Gainesville Hall 96 Foundation. The construction of the facility was funded by ACOG. The land belongs to the Corp of Engineers. The Lake Lanier Rowing Club and the Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club (LCKC) sublease the facilities. Gainesville Parks and Recreation and Hall County Parks and Leisure Departments assist with maintenance to the buildings and grounds and are the liaison with the city and county governments. No tax dollars are committed to the operation of the facility or programs. The clubs work in cooperation, but run separate programs.

Extractions: Fax: 770.287.3444 The development of the competitive Sprint Canoe / Kayak program was initiated by ACOG through the efforts of Steve Kelly. Equipment was provided through the USCKT and Ocean Kayak. Steve concentrated his efforts in training a core group of adults who agreed to start Junior Olympic teams. The league of teams concept provided local competition where none had existed before. The first Junior Olympic race hosted by the LCKC in 1995 was also the first sprint race ever held in Georgia. Seven teams and 115 athletes participated in the first year. The season consisted of 4 races. The program was voted the largest and most outstanding program in the United States in its first year. 1996 was a busy year. In addition to a traveling schedule for the sprint team and support for the Olympics and pre Olympic test events, the LCKC hosted the first annual Spring Break Training Camp and a 4 race Junior Olympic season for over 100 participants. Again we were the biggest and best Junior Olympic sprint program in the United States.

While every good student understands the dangers of plagiarizing from an Encyclopedia, web content developers know the value of NOT rewriting the encyclopedia: following is an entry from www.britannica.com , giving a little background to modern canoeing history. A History of Modern Canoeing from Brittanica online . . . A Scottish lawyer, sportsman, traveller, and philanthropist, John MacGregor, in the 1860s was a major figure in encouraging the recreation and sport of canoeing. He designed sailing canoes, which were decked and provided with a mast and sail as well as paddles, travelled in them throughout Europe and in the Middle East, and promoted their use in lectures and books. Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scouts, d Recreation and sport Canoeing began as a noncompetitive recreation and for a majority of canoeists remained such, involving paddling on local streams and lakes, extended tours, sometimes in North America repaddling the waters of earlier missionaries, explorers, and voyageurs. Canoeing was also combined for many enthusiasts with fishing, hunting, and camping trips. Wild-water, or white-water, canoeing on rivers with rapids and surf canoeing in the ocean also became popular. The development of recreational canoeing was furthered after World War II in North America by the proliferation of small aircraft that permitted canoeists to reach remote wilderness waters not used since the Indians and voyageurs travelled them.

Finish Lynx CANADIAN CANOE ASSOCIATION ATLANTIC DIVISION HISTORY THE EARLY YEARS The canoe and the kayak occupy an important place in Canadian history. An essential feature in the lives of Canada's aboriginal people, they were adopted by European immigrants to carry goods and people through the wilderness. When their importance as a means of transportation decreased with the coming of the railway, canoes and kayaks became popular recreational vehicles, ideal for the quiet exploration of Canada's lakes and streams. At the same time, increasing numbers discovered the pleasures of canoe and kayak racing and, when the 1936 Olympic Games were staged in Berlin, both the canoe and kayak were on the program for men. Women made their Olympic debut in 1948 in London. Modern paddlers compete in canoes or kayaks. The canoe, referred to internationally as the Canadian canoe, is propelled by paddlers kneeling on one knee and stroking a single-bladed paddle. The kayakers use a double-bladed paddle while seated in the kayak, in some ways similarly to the original kayaks of native Eskimos with which most people are familiar. A one-person Canadian canoe is called a C-1, a two-person canoe is a C-2, a four-person kayak is a K-4 and so forth. HISTORY IN THE MAKING Paddling history in Nova Scotia is recorded as far back as the Mic Mac Indians. Mic Mac Indians were the only paddlers in the earliest military regatta of 1826. According to William Adams, paddling for white competitors did not start until 1846 on Lake Banook. Races exclusively for Indians continued until 1904.

Extractions: 02:00 AM Jul. 04, 2001 PT The idea of a concrete canoe may sound like a contradiction in terms, but how about one whose material is geared to be outer-space worthy, and whose conceptual design is so unconventional that it was once incorrectly applied to a bridge that consequently sank? Concrete canoes are not new; universities throughout North America have participated in concrete canoe competitions for at least 14 years. "A lot of people would say 'You're nuts,'" said Robert Vaughan, a structural engineer at Marshall Space Flight Center Structural engineers are taught to avoid building anything that may come into contact with a matching natural resonance. To do so is to invite disaster.
