Whilst the local Naula and Landurna tribes grew rice and traded salt, the empire masterminded the trans-Saharan gold trade, upon which several European powers depended. Eager to get to the source of this gold, in the 1400s Prince Henry of Portugal encouraged European explorers to check out West Africa. In 1450 Portuguese ships arrived in Guinea-Bissau to trade slaves, gold, ivory and pepper. The Sahel lost their trade monopoly on gold and whilst the interior suffered, coastal towns prospered. By the late 17th century British, French and Dutch slave traders had joined the party and taken over the surrounding territories. The Berlin Conference of 1884-85 divided Africa between the European powers, leaving Portugal with Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, Equatorial Guinea and what are now Mozambique and Angola. (The Europeans were pleased with the results; the Africans were not invited to the conference.) Portugal started spreading inland shortly thereafter, although it didn't gain full control of the area until 1915, after a long series of wars with the local people.

The Cape Verde Islands This long history of colonial rule permanently affected cape verdean culture of anera for the local and regional economies, such as cape verde's, that had http://people.bu.edu/cvsa/CVHC.html
Extractions: The Cape Verde Islands, a small West African country, composed of ten volcanic islands and five islets off the coast of Senegal. Introduction For more than 400 years, Portugal claimed the rocky, arid islands of Cape Verde. This long history of colonial rule permanently affected Cape Verdean culture, making the small country seem distinct from other African nations - "more European." But such a view ignores the shared ancestries and political struggles that link the islands to the mainland. Cape Verde is home to a population descended from free people and West African slaves as well as a diverse mix of peoples: Fula, Wolof, Papeis, Balanta, Bijago, Jalofa, Fulupe, Mandingo, Manjaco, Portuguese, Moroccan, Sephardic Jewish, Genoese, Lebanese, Chinese, Dutch, French, English, American, and Brazilian. The children of these settlers and passers-by forged a hybrid culture and language known as Crioulo (Portuguese for Creole), drawing upon the legacies brought to the islands by slavery and colonialism. The expansion of the slave trade across the Atlantic Ocean in the sixteenth century soon brought business and settlement to Cape Verde. Portugal made the islands its headquarters for its holdings on the Upper Guinea Coast, and by the sixteenth century was also using the region as a penal colony for convicts and political exiles. The islands were originally governed by the companhia system, a sort of feudal system in which individuals or the church oversaw small plantations where slaves, brought from mainland West Africa, cultivated cotton, sugar cane, and food crops. Early Cape Verdean society enjoyed considerable autonomy from the Portuguese monarchy, making it an attractive base to generations of traders and smugglers.

Brief Profile Of Cape Verde Its history began in the 15 th century when of President George W. Bush, cape Verdeis eager United States on expanded trade, regional stability, democracy http://www.virtualcapeverde.net/capeverdeusaembassy/country_profile_brief.htm
Extractions: Brief Profile of CAPE VERDE Cape Verde is an insular archipelago composed of ten islands located off the west coast of Africa. Its history began in the 15 th century when the Portuguese discovered the islands, and took advantage of its geographic proximity to Europe and North America. The islands of Cape Verde became mainly a port for the re-exportation of slaves. As early as the 17 th century, Cape Verdeans began to explore and expand their horizon by illustrating their capacity and prominent work ethics by boarding whaling boats in service to the waters of AmericaNew England.. They later began to diversify their knowledge and ability to adapt by working in the cranberry harvest and factories in the New England area. Like other developing countries, Cape Verde faces many developmental problems. Recent statistical findings indicate that about 30 percent of the population are poor while about 14 percent of these are very poor. In fact, lack of access to basic needs such as water, sanitation, health care, adequate nutrition, shelter, telecommunications, and employment are still too common, especially within the rural communities and semi-urban centers. However, since its independence from Portugal in 1975, Cape Verde has utilized its human resources (430,000 inhabitants) in order to make significant progress on the development front. Cape Verde has one of the fastest growing economies in the sub-region of West Africa. Within 25 years of independence (1975 2000) its GDP per capita expanded from US$ 300 to US$ 1,300.
