It is estimated that the cultural sector contributes approximately $4 billion per year to New Zealand's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and that employment in this industry is growing more rapidly than in many other sectors. Almost 4,000 people were employed in performing arts in 1998, with 2,043 people employed in live entertainment and theatre, and a further 1,740 employed in the music industries. The arts are an integral part of New Zealanders' lives, with around 90% of people engaging in an average of four different types of arts activities every month. This interest in the arts is reflected in annual household expenditure estimates, which have revealed that in the year ended March 1996, New Zealand households spent $1.2 million per week purchasing tickets to go to the performing arts (theatre, ballet, concert or play performances). Total expenditure on all art and cultural performances for the 12-month period amounted to $62 million. Despite the high expenditure on the arts, local media coverage and the general profile of the arts in New Zealand are low when compared to the media coverage and profile found in countries such as the UK or Australia. Although the arts and many arts institutions receive government funding, at least 70% of an arts organisation's income is likely to be self-generated. This self-generated income will largely be from ticket sales, but may include support from sponsors and subscribers, as well as gifts from benefactors.

In electing to name the performing arts as central to its mission, Southwest Missouri State University recognizes the historical impact and future potential of the performing arts in the region in which it is located and which the university has historically served. SMSU understands the essentially public nature of the performing arts and the ramifications of such a nature: that performing artists, as vehicles of human expression, must actively participate in the community and not be isolated from it; that the performing arts fulfill a variety of needs which range from enlightenment to entertainment to economic development; that the performing arts are inextricably linked to the visual and language arts; and that the performing arts must consistently seek to develop breadth of expression in deference to the diversity of the public they serve. Inasmuch as the performing arts are of, by, about and for the people, the university's commitment to the performing arts is a statement of oneness with its community. In this spirit of unity, the university dedicates itself to a collaborative partnership with all performing arts venues, and with all organizations and initiatives which impact the performing arts within SMSU's unique metropolitan region. This commitment necessitates, as a point of departure, assessments both of performing arts community needs and of present and potential collaborative arrangements with that community. Specifically, such cooperation will be intended to meet the immediate and long-range needs of the performing arts community, to prepare university students for potential careers in the performing arts, to enrich the lives of all SMSU students through exposure to the performing arts, to create a foundation of life-long appreciation of aesthetic values, and to educate and entertain, both formally and informally, the populace of the area served by the institution.
