By that measure alone, Bucknell rates highly. Moreover, since 1967, Bucknell has been ranked among the top 10 private schools in the nation for the number of undergraduates earning Ph.D.s in chemistry Undergraduate research is valuable for several reasons: it provides hands-on experience with various instruments and techniques, close interaction with faculty, and it builds self-confidence in the laboratory. All of these factors help to prepare students for a successful future in careers requiring critical thinking, data analysis, and experimental design. Students can work with faculty on research projects beginning their first year at Bucknell. Research not only allows students to "do chemistry," but also provides real-life applications of the principles discussed in the classroom. During the summer, 20 to 30 students spend 10 weeks conducting grant- and university-sponsored research.

People with Bachelor's Degrees in Chemistry can move into many different areas of work, including biotechnology, earth sciences, medicine, pharmacy, manufacturing, sales. The training in critical thinking and the development of laboratory skills involved in obtaining a degree in chemistry translate into an ability to do many kinds of work with the result that employment is relatively easy to obtain and salaries are generally good. Las Positas offers a full lower division curriculum in Chemistry. Labs are conducted in a modern facility with excellent fume hoods and modern instrumentation. There are a maximum in 24 students in lab sections, which are taught by the same instructor as in the lecture. Chemistry 1A is offered Fall and Spring, with one section in the late afternoons in the Fall.

Extractions: The Chemistry Department offers four distinct programmes Chemistry Honours, Biochemistry, Chemistry Major, and Chemistry Minor The programme for the B.Sc. Honours Biochemistry is oriented toward those students who intend to proceed to post-graduate study, whether in the life sciences (MD, DDS, DVM) or into M.Sc and Ph.D. programmes in Biochemistry or related fields. The programme comprises a core curriculum designed to cover the basics needs of the discipline with development from this to themes in applied biochemistry including Inmunology, molecular biology and organic biochemistry. The low student/professor ratio which averages 7 to 10 favours a close interaction and personalized teaching. The laboratory sessions are designate to replicate real-life situations in industrial or academics settings, rather than abstract theoretic exercises. The individual research project which each student must undertake with a minimum of supervision helps to still the self-discipline so necessary to the practicing researcher. Class in the chemistry and biochemistry courses are small, which promotes close personal contact members of the faculty and students. The faculty are also heavily involved in undergraduate laboratories, which enhances this personal contact and results in a friendly and every productive learning experience in the experimental chemistry.

The program covers the following areas: general chemistry, physical chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, theoretical chemistry, biological chemistry. It places strong emphasis on mathematical methods, computational methods and laboratory work. The regular B.Sc. program spreads over six semesters, and requires 144 credit points (10 points can be acquired from courses outside of the sciences). Special programs are available for students interested in interdisciplinary areas such as chemistry-physics, chemistry-biology, chemistry-computer sciences, etc. Students with outstanding records can join in the special Amirim program run by the Faculty of Science which offers intensive tutoring and some particularly advanced courses. The M.Sc. program runs over four semesters and involves a prolonged research project supervised by a faculty member. Degrees are awarded pending a final examination and a written thesis.
