It was the only branch of sixteen not consolidated into the new main library when Hill Memorial and all the other branches were merged with the opening of Troy H. Middleton Library in 1958. The Chemistry Library remained in Coates Hall until the construction of a new facilities in Williams Hall were completed in November, 1976. The library opened in March, 1977 and serves the College of Basic Sciences in a cluster of buildings southeast of the main quadrangle along Tower Drive. Ringed by the Life Sciences Building, Arthur H. Choppin Hall, and the Fred C.     Extractions: An International Leader in Engineering Education The Department of Chemical Engineering at MIT has been built on innovations in theory and practice, unique instructional programs, an abiding concern with the needs of industry, and the very definition of chemical engineering. Our work is inspired by the example of those individuals who founded chemical engineering as an academic curriculum at MIT and then developed the tools that would distinguish and advance the profession. The Beginning The first chemical engineering curriculum was offered by Lewis M. Norton as a new Course of study within the Department of Chemistry at MIT in 1888. Norton's Course combined mechanical engineering with industrial chemistry. As the course catalogue of 1888 described it, this curriculum was being forged "to meet the needs of students who desire a general training in mechanical engineering, and at the same time to devote a portion of their time to the study of the applications of chemistry to the arts, especially to those engineering problems which relate to the use and manufacture of chemical products." In 1891, the Department granted seven Bachelor's degrees in the new Course, accompanying eleven in the traditional chemistry curriculum. After Norton's death in 1893, Frank H. Thorpe led the Course through a continued rise in popularity. Thorpe's Outlines of Industrial Chemistry was published in 1898.

    Extractions: Sciences Building Glenn H. Brown T he LCI was named in honor of its founder, Dr. Glenn H. Brown, by the Kent State University Board of Trustees in 1986. Brown, a faculty member in Kent's Chemistry Department from 1961-1985 and Regents Professor from 1968-1985, established the LCI in 1965 and served as its director until his retirement in 1983. In 1965, the Kent State University Board of Trustees authorized the formation of the Liquid Crystal Institute under Glenn Brown's direction. Other scientists at Kent joined in seeking funding for liquid crystal research. Major grants came from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and U.S. defense agencies. Research at the Institute, in collaboration with the Departments of Chemistry and Physics, helped establish the field of liquid crystals as an active area in both of these disciplines. In 1990, the National Science Foundation selected a consortium of Kent State University, Case Western Reserve University, and the University of Akron to serve as Ohio's only Science and Technology Research Center.

    Extractions: Related information on ages of high-redshift galaxies Motivation: With abundant evidence that the overall star-formation rate has changed with cosmic time, we expect to see low abundances of heavy elements in the early Universe, before most stars had formed, much less been able to enrich their surroundings with processed elements. In principle, abundances give us a new way to trace the overall history of star formation , one which could be important to the history and heating of both the intracluster and intergalactic media. The relation to star-formation history may not be trivial, since there is good reason to believe that outflows were common in many galaxies early on in their evolution. This implies that some enriched material has left the galaxies and no longer participates in their internal star/gas cycling. The history of this material can, to some extent, be picked up as part of the ICM. Approaches: Our favorite ways of measuring chemical abundances, using absorption-line strengths and modelling of stellar atmospheres, usually in whole populations, won't work at great distances. The systems are very faint for absorption-line work, and the familiar emitted optical spectral regime is shifted into the near-infrared so that the ground-based sky background becomes very bright. We can, however, use several more or less direct approaches to see whether high-redshift galaxies really do have lower metal abundances than their nearby counterparts.
