Extractions: I've been in the since fall of 1999. I've taken a total of 80-something hours here - a portion of those going towards my BSE in Computer Systems Engineering and recently, my BSE in Mechanical Engineering. I made the change to ME before the fall semester of 2001 but it wasn't until recently that my course-track changed.. since CSE and ME share a lot of pre-requisites, I was still fulfilling those. My ME core classes don't begin until this coming fall.. this was a litte different for me, since in CSE, your core classes start freshman year, not sophomore year (like ME). Anyhow, the below is just a summary of the classes I've taken and my impression on the prof, material, and overall class... maybe it'll be helpful to people out there curious about ME/CSE/CEAS/ASU. Extractions: The computer is one of the important inventions of the 20th century. It has come to influence almost every aspect of our daily lives. As a result, Papert (1988) makes the point that there are urgent needs for educators to contemplate effective ways of using computers in the school curriculum. Tolman and Allred (1984) stated: The computer is influencing many aspects of learning in both the school and the home. An understanding of its role and potential is therefore of the utmost importance to educators as they look to the future

Extractions: Tools of torture: Now, in Spring 2003, I am taking this stuff: During Fall 2002 I took a nice collection of classes like so: COMP 540 : Adaptive Systems by Devika Subramanian. This was a really cool class - I learned a lot about statistics and adaptive systems for learning data. COMP 412 : Topics in Compiler Construction by Keith Cooper. Kind of fun - lots of different puzzles to solve, very applied class. COMP 607 : a seminar in Automated Program Verification with Moshe Vardi. This was pretty interesting since I didn't know anything about verification before I took the seminar. A pretty cool application of logic. We read and discussed a CMU PhD thesis on the subject of automated abstraction refinement. LING 301: Phonetics with Nancy Niedzielski. This class felt too easy at times, but some parts were interesting. The professor can be somewhat disorganized, and the questions posed on exams can be difficult to gleam original intent from.

Go back to the top See the Frequently Given Answers section on the Free Stuff page Go back to the top I get this question a lot, but it's the wrong focus to have. If you're doing this for the money, spend your time elsewhere in more lucrative endeavors. There is money to be made in books, but you'll be surprised at the amount of work it takes. Figure it this way: if you're really good, you'll crank out a finished page in an hour (that's incorporating writing time, editing time, reviews, more edits, etc). So for a 500 page book, you'll spend at least 500 hours. If you've never done this before, double that time estimate. If you know enough to write a book, then you know enough to be a consultant. Say you charge $100 an hour as a consultant. If you spent your writing time consulting, you'd make $50,000. Unless your book fills an intense need, you may not see enough sales to hit that amount of royalties.
