Extractions: PREFACE In 1994, the House of Representatives Standing Committee of Employment, Education and Training, presented a report on violence in Australian schools. The report provided an analysis of violence in schools at that time and noted that "there were numerous programs that address different aspects of school violence specifically targeted at students, parents, teachers or a combination of these" (p. vi). Programs and resources have continued to be produced since that time. It is the aim of this Annotated Bibliography to identify the resources produced in the years 1995-1998 so that schools may use them as a basis for building their own school programs and/or professional development activities which aim to address the problem of school violence. The resources are not necessarily Australian but all are available from some location in Australia. Violence is defined as "any action (physical, verbal, sexual or psychological) used against a person, that is injurious, unjust or unwarranted" (Western Australian Department of Education, c.1998, p. 2). School violence may occur in the form of physical violence against persons, animals or property; verbal intimidation such as bullying, verbal abuse or threats; gender harassment;, or sexual or physical abuse. Violence may be perpetrated against special groups of children such as children with disabilities, children of different racial or ethnic backgrounds, children actually or perceived to be of a different sexual preference, or children of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background. Extractions: Diamondback staff writer The department of criminology and criminal justice's doctoral program is the top in the nation, according to a study in the fall 1998 issue of the Journal of Criminal Justice Education. The study ranked the top 20 doctoral programs in the nation, as well as faculty members, from 1991-95. Three campus faculty members were ranked among the four most frequently cited in the nation. One of those faculty members, Lawrence Sherman, chair of the department, said he believes the department's ranking is a result of a long-term strategy to recruit faculty. He said the department recruits good researchers and people who are working on important subjects. The result is that when faculty members do research, "it doesn't just sit on the shelf," Sherman said. Sherman said areas being worked on by campus faculty members include gun violence, crime in schools, race and crime and prevention of juvenile delinquency.
