    Extractions: By Erin Miller Editor in chief Pulitzer Prize winner Oscar Hijuelos opened the final keynote lecture in the 2002 Festival of Faith and Writing with a warning. ``There are two versions of myself here tonight,'' he said, alluding to his formal, prepared speech about his writing and the humorous, parenthetical quips that surfaced every now and then throughout the speech, revealing what he claims is his true nature: an inability to be serious for long. Hijuelos commented that he chose to speak at the festival because he believes the combination of faith and writing is particularly important. ``What could be more relevant to those folk who embrace writing than these two complementary entities?'' he said. ``Faith [is found in] fantasy, wish fulfillment and fiction. Fiction is the last place faith flourishes. ``Even though I'm a basically cynical person, I've always written about religious people who are quite optimistic,'' he added. ``From the outside looking in, my characters seem superstitious. They believe in the soul and pray.... They believe in the validity of intuition.'' Much of the faith depicted in his novels reflects the environment in which Hijuelos grew up, in a neighborhood in New York City, as a child of Cuban immigrants. In that neighborhood, he experienced both devout Cuban Catholicism and Afro-Cuban cults. People believed in things such as ghosts, reincarnation and spirits. All of that is worked into the novels he writes, he said.

    Extractions: By Cheryl Musch In Havana, we began to build a basis of understanding of Afro-Cuban culture that would prove invaluable for the rest of the trip. Participating in rituals laced with rum, gunpowder, drumming and wild dancing allowed me to enter Cuban homes and lives. In the Atar‚s neighborhood, we met an 80-year-old woman, still the leader of the rumba dance, with long painted nails and an aura of feminine sensuality. In her home, we saw the results of an active and impressive neighborhood association. This independent organization focusses on community development by providing home improvement including painting, restoration, and retiling floors. Non-governmental organizations such as this one have blossomed in Cuba due to a lack of economic resources. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union and Eastern bloc countries, Cuba has been in what they've termed a "special period." One Cuban described this "special period" as wartime conditions without the war. Monthly food rations have been scaled back to the basics. Each month each person receives about 6 pounds of rice, some beans, sometimes some pasta, a little salt, sometimes about 7 eggs or a little bit of meat. Cooking oil, which was previously available, is no longer, and soap and dairy products (except for children under 7) are unavailable. We were told that children did not previously beg on the streets, but now they ask for a dollar or soap. Prostitution has also become a growing problem in Cuba. Young women who are intelligent and trained to be professional doctors or lawyers have chosen prostitution because earning dollars from tourists pays much more than what they could make as professionals, if they could get a job in their fields.

Despite the often shallow Revolutionary propaganda spouted by the Government (sometimes in billboard form , the revolutionary cause has become thoroughly embedded in Cuban culture. This is because many Cubans greatly appreciate the social benefits of the Revolution, especially in the areas of education , and health care There is a strong artistic presence among the Cuban people , whether from artists formally trained in state-provided art schools, or self-taught amateurs. Cubans greatly enjoy music ; in fact, several popular forms of music and dance such as salsa and the cha-cha-cha originated in Cuba. Having trouble finding something?

This excellent Havana-based rumba group plays and dances both rumba (the percussive Cuban street music) and music of the Yoruba religion using batá drums. In the latter segment the dancers impersonate the orishas in full costume. Dinner: at a paladar, or private restaurant. Evening: Timba research wherever the best dance band is playing. Timba is an old word for "rumba" that in the mid-90s came to be applied to the contemporary hard-edged black dance music of Havana. It could be Los Van Van, NG La Banda, Paulito FG, Issac Delgado, Adalberto Álvarez, Charanga Habanera, Bamboleo, Manolito y Su Trabuco - or someone else . . . we'll keep you posted . . .
