Extractions: OLYMPIC HISTORY Track and road cycling have been part of the Games since 1896. Over the years, events have come and gone, distances have been altered, from the one lap race last seen in 1908 to the 12-hour race which made its only appearance at those inaugural Games in Athens. In Sydney, three events will be added to the programme: the Madison, the Keirin and the Olympic sprint. One race that has stood the test of time is the 1,000m match sprint, though there is no result for 1908, when the race was declared void and officials refused to allow it to be rerun. Two of the British riders in the final, Bejamin Jones and Clarence Kingsbury, both suffered punctures and dropped out, while Marice Schilles, of France, and Victor Johnson, of Britain, raced for the line, the Frenchman just getting the edge. However, they were outside the time limit of 1min 45sec and Schilles remains one of the Olympic champions that never officially was. If there was an element of British fixing in that race in London, the fixing of the event in Berlin 1936 was somewhat more blatant: Toni Merkens, of Germany, it was agreed by judges, had deliberately swerved into the path of Arie van Vliet, of the Netherlands, and gone on to take the title. The Dutch protest was upheld but rather than disqualify Merkens and promote Van Vliet, officials fined Merkens DM100 (about £30 in today's money). Van Vliert was compensated with victory in the 1,000m time trial the next day. Merkens died soon after being wounded in action on the Russian front in the Second World War.

Cycling dates back to the early 1800s, but the sport really took off in 1839 when Scottish blacksmith Kirkpatrick Macmillan invented the pedal and crank system to power the machines. The next major advance came around 50 years later with the invention of gears and chains. In between times, in 1868, the first recorded cycling competition took place: a road race in Paris. Cycling has always been popular, as a recreational activity, a sport and a means of transport.

Mosaics and drawings from Middle Eastern civilizations and Pompeii show man swimming in a dog stroke. Greeks held swimming in a high regard as well, so much so that men of the ancient times often considered others less worthy if they could not run or swim. A man was considered uneducated by Plato if he could not swim. But it was an 1844 race in London, England that displayed swimming close to what we know today. Thanks to England's Swimming Society, several American Indians were brought over for the race and dominated the competition using windmill strokes resembling today's freestyle. Despite the Indians' advanced style, the English still relied on the breaststroke - the stroke mainly used by Captain Matthew Webb when he became the first to swim across the English Channel in 1875.

Extractions: Ananova: Olympic sport guide - Cycling A guide to the Olympic sport of Cycling Road Races The men's race is over 17 laps of 13km, a total distance of 221km. The women's race is over eight laps of 104km. Both feature a mass start with cyclists completing a number of circuits of the course. In the women's and the men's event, the first cyclist over the line wins. Individual time trial cyclists start from a ramp at intervals of 60 seconds and race against the clock with the fastest cyclist winning. 1,000m sprint For this event riders need both explosive speed and skill. Lots are drawn for each race and the rider who draws the inside of the track at the start must lead for the first lap. Riders neither want to take the lead nor leave themselves open to attack from behind, which means they often to come to a standstill. Riders must not roll backwards more than 20cm. In the last lap, one rider will normally make a sprint to give a dramatic finish. Pursuit Two riders start from opposite sides of the track, with the faster time or catching the opponent awarding victory. In the team event (four riders), the third finisher in each team determines the time. A team wins if its third rider overtakes the opposition number three or if its third rider is faster than his opposite number over the line. Points Race Over a distance of 40km for men, 24km for women, riders earn points in sprints, every eighth lap. Points are: Five for 1st, three for 2nd, two for 3rd and one for 4th. The final lap awards double points, or victory is awarded if a rider laps the field.
Extractions: Alpha Index Index by Sport History Bits Forum ... Search It seems as if bicycle racing ought to be simple and straightforward, but it's not. At least, track racing isn't. There are essentially three types of road racing: The mass start or in-line road race, the time trial, and the stage race. Only the first two are Olympic events. In the Olympics, the mass start road race for men is made up of repeated circuits of a 12- to 18-kilometer course, for a total distance of 210 to 240 kilometers. The women's event has ranged from 79.2 to 126 kilometers. Outside of the Olympics, many mass start races are from point to point, often from one major city to another. The most famous bicycle race of all, the Tour de France, is a stage race. A stage race is like a series of point-to-point road races, conducted over a period of days. Track racing includes individual and team pursuits, points races, time trials, sprints, the Madison, and the keirin. In the pursuit events, competing racers or four-person teams start on opposite sides of the track. The theoretical goal is to overtake the opponent, though that doesn't happen often. The winner is usually the racer or team that covers the distance in the shortest time. In the team pursuit, the time is recorded for the team's third finisher. (The reason for the unusual start is to make the race a true test of speed by preventing a cyclist from drafting on the opponent to save energy for the finish.) The Olympic distances are 4,000 meters for men, 3,000 for women.
