Extractions: the Czech Republic On July 20, 1996, The European Scout Office announced: World Organization welcomes the Czech Republic Junák - Svaz Skautu a Skautek (Junák - Association of Scouts and Guides of the Czech Republic) has been welcomed as the 141st member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement on 30 June 1996. The association has a total membership of some 70,000 (approximately 60% male) operating in a country with a population of around 10.3 million people. Junák is a "Scout and Guide National Organization" in accordance with the Statement on Relationships between WAGGGS and WOSM. Scouting in the Czech Republic has a long and distinguished history. The Czechs were third, after the United Kingdom and Chile, to adopt Scouting. In 1910, inspired by the writings of Robert Baden-Powell, Prof. Antonin B Svojsik wrote the first handbook for Scouts already operating in the Czech lands. He followed this with an experimental camp in 1911, only four years after Baden-Powell's own experimental camp on Brownsea Island. The following year, Svojsik organised a camp, lasting five weeks, during which the first steps were taken towards the establishment of the Scout Movement in the Czech lands, named Junák-Czesky Skaut. In the quickly developing world of Scouting, Junák-Czesky Skaut provided a model to be followed by many other developing national associations, at the time.

The first written information regarding production of iron is from the middle of the 14th century. At the beginning of the 19th century there was a rail rolling mill in operation which delivered the products for railways, water and gas lines in Prague and in Vienna. Later on, in the period of economical crisis the iron industry in the area gradually died. Extractions: Back The exact year of the Roma's arrival on the territory of the present-day Czech Republic is difficult to determine, as the chronicles of the time don't mention their arrival in any clear or concrete way. In the chronicle of "Dalimil," in the chapter "About the Pagans" the author makes reference to Tatar scouts who were moving through the Czech Lands after 1242, and with whom he could be confusing the Roma, though Roma scholars haven't verified this document. Another reference to the Roma in the Czech Lands comes from the end of the 14th century, when the Executioner's Book of the Lord of Rozmberk contains the testimony of a condemned man, who names as his accomplice a "black gypsy." This could be fact, as the Roma arrived in Central Europe in the 15th century. Many historians also refer to this century as the "Golden Age of the Roma in Europe," when they were being received by aristocrats and being given letters of protection and other privileges. Solid proof of the Roma's residence on Czech territory is actually one of these letters of protection, which was issued on April 17th, 1423 at Spissky Castle by the Holy Roman Emperor and Czech King, Zikmund. The text of this letter has been preserved and reads as follows: "We, Zikmund, King of Hungary, Bohemia, Dalmatia, Croatia, ..., Our loyal Ladislav, Duke of his Gypsy people, humbly beseeches us for affirmation of our special leniency. Receive then his civil appeal and don't refuse this letter. In the case that the aforementioned Ladislav and his people appear in whichever place in Our Empire, in any town or village, We recommend that you show to him the loyalty which you would show to Us. Protect them, so that Duke Ladislav and his people may live without prejudice within your walls. If some one among them is found drunk, if they should cause a quarrel of any kind, We desire and decree that only Ladislav himself, Duke, has the right to judge this person, punish, give pardon and absolution, or cast him out from your circle ..."

A lot of rulers and kings ruled the people in Bohemia from the 7th to 19th centuries. Let us notice two of them: emperor Charles IV and emperor Rudolf II. During the reign of Charles IV (1346-78), as king of Bohemia and Holy Roman emperor, Prague grew into one of the largest cities in Europe. It acquired its fine Gothic face and landmarks including Charles University, Charles Bridge and St. Vitus Cathedral. In the second half of the 16th century the city experienced great prosperity under emperor Rudolf II and was made the seat of the Habsburg Empire. Rudolf II established great collections of art and renowned artists and scholars were invited to his court. At the beginning of the 20th century Bohemia was a part of Austrian Empire. As late as in 1996, when Tomás Prokes and Libor Zrídkaveselý won the prestigious swedish Fjällorienteering (3 days Mountain-o), a group of o-runners around Tomás Prokes and Václav Zakouril decided to establish an independent rogaining association and started to organize rogaining and mountain orienteering events. In autumn 1996, the Czech Association of Rogaining and Mountain Orienteering (CAR) was officially founded and the first two races in mountain-o were held at Branzez and Liberec. The following year the first rogaining (12 and 24 h) was organized as 1-st Open Czech Championships by Honza Vokurka and his team. Open category was won by czech-finnish team Seidl-Kakko (Iiro Kakko was the first european to become world champion in 1998!). In the area of sport policy, the situation varies between successes and failures. Big majority (90 %) of CAR members are orienteerers and this fact causes contentions with the Czech Orienteering Federation leadership, whose reaction on founding of CAR was negative. Even the felt discriminatory attitude of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, when all required criteria including the minimum number of members (800) were filled, can be caused by disagreements with COF (8000 members).

The culture of the Great Moravian Empire greatly influenced the development of culture and religion among the Eastern and Southern Slavs in the Middle Ages. In 863, the Byzantine Christian missionaries Constantin and Methodius came to Moravia to introduce Slavic liturgy there. Very soon, however, the influence of the Roman Catholic Church expanded, proving to be decisive in the course of the history of Bohemia and Moravia.
