5-0 out of 5 stars The best calculus reference book available...
This new, updated version of Master Math: Calculus is a comprehensive, handy reference and teaching book.If you are curious about what calculus is all about, this book presents and explains all the topics that will be thrown at you in a college level calculus series. The book begins at a very basic level by clearly explaining Functions and defining and explaining the meaning and use of the Derivative and Integral.

As you can see from the Table of Contents in the "look inside" feature, this book goes on to cover Series and Approximations; Vectors, Matrices, Curves, Surfaces, and Motion; Partial Derivatives; and Vector Calculus. There is even a short chapter giving some introductory definitions of Differential Equations so you can see what your mathematical future looks like if you survive Calculus and go on to higher math!As the L.J. review pointed out, this book does not have problem sets, but it is filled with worked examples throughout the book to support the definitions and explanations. The L. J. review missed the point of the book and its criticism of the publisher's print and layout does not apply to this new version. In fact, it is great to see second editions of the Master Math books. They look great!I love the clear, direct teaching style of these books.

Master Math: Calculus is a great second source to your textbook for alternative explanations and examples. The book is packed with information and seems to focus on covering everything and putting it in context.I have purchased all of the Master Math books. They are the most helpful books on my bookshelf and keep me from ever feeling lost when it comes to math.I also especially love Master Math: Geometry and Master Math Trigonometry.Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Test Review
I first purchased this book over 3 decades ago.I've used it several times, always the night before some sort of aptitude test or exam that included pre-calculus math.I used it to pass the math CLEP test, placement exams for college and grad school, and the ASVAB test to get into the Navy. Each time, I went through the entire book in one evening just before taking the test.It worked like magic.I totally aced the math every time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book.
As a professor who teaches Capital Markets in a Masters program in Finance, I only wish that all my students came prepared with this much math (let alone, basic calculus).

To answer criticisms first. This is not a book to learn pre-calculus math from, with no previous exposure -- the explanations are too condensed; the reader is expected to fill-in key steps from his/her previous knowledge.

However, for those reviewing topics for which they already have some understanding, I cannot think of a better book.It cuts down to the essence what often takes 500, verbose pages. It is a excellent summary that requires the reader to be active and think through the steps along the way.

Again, for those who have previously studied the topic, what would be a good follow-on for elementary calculus?Probably, either Spivak:

http://www.amazon.com/Hitchhikers-Guide-Calculus-Michael-Spivak/dp/0883858126/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1257190231&sr=1-17

or Kleppner and Ramsey:

http://www.amazon.com/Quick-Calculus-Self-Teaching-Guide-2nd/dp/0471827223/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1257190721&sr=1-1

Personally, I would slightly prefer Kleppner and Ramsey (because it goes a little further, without sacrificing understanding).

5-0 out of 5 stars Best quick review I've seen
As a scientist (but not mathematician) I think that this book is an excellent review for students that have already taken these courses in high school in preparation for a college calculus class. It is a distillation of the key principles covered in high school that are necessary to succeed in calculus courses. It could also serve as a preview of upcoming material for motivated students (e.g. a high school student could read the chapter on algebra over the summer before actually taking algebra). It isn't suitable as a stand-alone text, but then it doesn't imply that it is one. I used it in conjunction with a couple calculus review texts ("for Dummies") to refresh after a twenty-year hiatus before successfully tackling differential equations.

5-0 out of 5 stars all good stuff, no fluff
I love this book and refer back to it regularly. It has the most succinct explanations of many subjects in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry that I've seen. What a waste of paper all those other precalculus books are!

2-0 out of 5 stars Inadequate
This book might be used as a quick reference to check formulas, but it's inadequate for learning or even refreshing.Perhaps it's unrealistic to expect much of a book with "in a nutshell" in the title. However, the author doesn't even bother to provide answers to all of the review exercises.Instead, only answers to "selected" problems are shown. There are quite a few superior books available which do a much better job of presenting this material. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Basic formulas, principals, discussions of sequences and progressions and step-by-step directions link formulas to everyday life
Joining others in the 'Master Math' series is this fine introduction on calculus, covering the basics of sets, functions and integrals. Basic formulas, principals, discussions of sequences and progressions, and step-by-step directions link formulas to everyday life and provide calculus students with an excellent foundation for progressing to the next step. The result is a 'must' for any high school or college collection where calculus is an introductory course, and for any student taking it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Relatively minimal breadth of coverage of calculus and geometry, perhaps less obvious due to larger than normal font.
This is a nicely written and well-organized book. While not error-free, the relative number of mathematical errors seems similar to review books from competitors.

The text's main flaw is its breadth of coverage. It's really closer in size to a pamphlet than a book. Particularly as the font appears to have been "artificially" enlarged to make this short work appear even longer. You can confirm this yourself by using Amazon helpful, "Look inside this book" feature. Compared to, for example, the author's "Master Math: Calculus" in this same series, the font here appears to be about 40% larger. In addition, sections often end with considerable white space remaining before the end of the page.

Even with its larger font, this is quite a small-sized text, excluding the index, of less than 170 pages. Using a more typical font size, this text would probably be around 100 pages long. Of the 170 pages. about 90 pages are actually devoted to pre-calculus and geometry. The remainder, almost one-half the book, covers calculus topics: limits, derivatives, and integrals. Thus, the breadth of coverage of both pre-calculus and geometry is quite limited. This allows the author to concentrate on some key topics in both areas, but a consequence is that breadth of coverage is relatively minimal.

One of the earlier reviewers said, "Lots of good trig". While what's presented is nicely done, the chapter on trigonometry is less than 20 pages, and there are some presentation problems. For example, the graphs for the sine and cosine appear to have been constructed from joined semicircles rather than displaying actual sine and cosine functions.

Although mathematical plotting software was widely when this work was published, the author did not include output from such software in this book. This has resulted in many inappropriately drawn curves not only in the trigonometry section, as mentioned above, but in the sections on derivatives and integrals.

This book is more a sampler of many interesting topics in its title, but it cannot be recommended if a relatively comprehensive coverage of pre-calculus, geometry, or introductory calculus is needed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Go, get it!
This is the third one in the `Master Math' series. Like the earlier ones, this too follows the same style. Simple, but effective. As I told in the review for the first two books, I was looking for a book to brush up my math after 22 years. I am repeating the same stuff, just keep one thing in mind; this is neither a text book nor a replacement for it. Written in a very simple and clear language and it is not just a collection of formulas and definitions. If you are starting after a long break, it is better you follow the reading order, go through the first and second books first. I agree with one of the reviewer with respect to the value of `Pi'; it is written clearly as "The value of Pi is 22/7 or approximately 3.141592654" but when we divide 22 by 7, what we get is 3.14285714 `. About the confusion regarding the relationship of pi, circumference and diameter, the book clearly says that "More specifically, Pi is equivalent to the circumference divided by the diameter of a circle".This book won't disappoint you. If all you want is to brush up or learn the basics or a fast reference, this is the book for you. If you are serious about the subject, add one more book and don't minus this.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some facts are just wrong.
This is a decent book if you want to review this material. However, when I read a math book and there are basic facts that are just plain wrong I get worried. In chapter 1, page 23, the author begins to discuss Pi. In just two bullet points the author makes several incorrect or incomplete statements.

1) "Pi defines the ratio between the circumference and the diameter of a circle." CORRECT, the author should have stopped here.

2) "More specifically, Pi is the equivalent to the circumference divided by the radius of a circle." WRONG. The formula for circumference is: Circumference = Pi * Diameter. Therefore Pi = Circumference / Diameter.

NOTE: Another reviewer has stated that the above statement is wrong. I stand by my statement. Either he has a different version of the book or he read it wrong. The version that I have was published in 1996 and the full paragraph says the following:
"Pi, or (symbol for Pi here), defines the ratio between the circumference and the diameter of a circle. More specifically, Pi is equivalent to the circumference divided by the radius of a circle."
The author starts off correctly but makes the error in the second sentence which is the statement I originally quoted.

3) "The value of Pi is 22/7 or approximately 3.141592654."Absolutely WRONG and Partially WRONG. You can NOT say that Pi IS 22/7. This is so commonly used. In fact, I learned the same thing in grade school. However, if we divide 22 by 7 it is not equal to Pi by the third decimal place. 22/7 = 3.142...and Pi = 3.141...which leads me to the partially wrong portion of the statement. Whenever giving an approximate value of Pi it should be followed by ...

So, while the book can be a good review, be careful.

Product Description
Three components contribute to a theme sustained throughout the Coburn Series: that of laying a firm foundation, building a solid framework, and providing strong connections. Not only does Coburn present a sound problem-solving process to teach students to recognize a problem, organize a procedure, and formulate a solution, the text encourages students to see beyond procedures in an effort to gain a greater understanding of the big ideas behind mathematical concepts.

Written in a readable, yet mathematically mature manner appropriate for college algebra level students, Coburn’s Algebra & Trigonometry uses narrative, extensive examples, and a range of exercises to connect seemingly disparate mathematical topics into a cohesive whole.Coburn’s hallmark applications are born out of the author’s extensive experiences in and outside the classroom, and appeal to the vast diversity of students and teaching methods in this course area.

Benefiting from the feedback of hundreds of instructors and students across the country, Algebra & Trigonometry second edition, continues to emphasize connections in order to improve the level of student engagement in mathematics and increase their chances of success in college algebra.

Product Description
This new text embodies Sullivan/Sullivan’s hallmarks —  accuracy, precision, depth, strong student support, and abundant exercises while exposing students early (Chapter One) to the study of functions and taking a right triangle approach to trigonometry. "IT WORKS" for instructors and students because it focuses students on the fundamentals: preparing for class, practicing their homework, and reviewing. After completing the book, students will be prepared to handle the algebra found in subsequent courses such as finite mathematics, business mathematics, and engineering calculus and will have a solid understanding of the concept of a function. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars worthless!! waste of money.
Maybe it's because the instructor covers dissimilar material, but the book sucks compared to other math books I've had in the past.It gives you a few examples in each section and that's it.It doesn't explain thoroughly enough for me to understand.I suppose you don't really have a choice in using this textbook, but just know what to expect. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is the one.
I got this book in very good condition. It wasn't rapped in plastic though, but everything was perfect about it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good customer service.
The book was a little more worn than described, but the seller was very quick to respond to any question I had.

2-0 out of 5 stars not such a great deal
Took longer than expected to arrive and was not in the best shape, but it still saved me money to buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Investment
I recommend this book as a quick review of Trig or as extra help along with the textbook for those learning Trig. This book impressed me because it is straightforward and easy to follow.I am terrible at math and I always make dumb mistakes, but this book has all the answers worked out.I used to sit there for hours trying to figure out why I was getting all the answers wrong when I thought I understood how to do the problems. After I bought this book, I was able to see what my mistakes were and correct them within seconds of doing the problem. You might still need help from a person occasionally if you're confused about something in the book, but for the most part this book is better than a tutor because it is more efficient.Instead of waiting for someone else to figure out what your mistakes are, you can just compare your work to the book's!

If you're great at math this book is a great review book because it goes quickly through the essentials in an organized fashion. There is no fluff. If you're trying to cram, it tells you what's most important.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book to prepare for calculus!!
I had this textbook for my precalculus class, almost never attended the clas, but got all A's on the test and A final grade -- all thanks to this book. You literally don't need a teacher, or any other sources, even if you not a science person, you will be able to understand the concepts. It has a lot of sample problems solved in each section, and then at the end of each section, the problems are listed from very simple to moderate to high difficulty. So once you will solve the simple problems, that will give you ability to solve moderate problems, and then difficult ones from there... ... Read more

Product Description
Mathematical reform is the driving force behind the organization and development of this new text in college algebra and trigonometry. The use of technology, primarily graphing utilities, is assumed throughout the text. The development of each topic proceeds from the concrete to the abstract and takes full advantage of technology, wherever appropriate. The first major objective of this book is to encourage students to investigate mathematical ideas and processes graphically and numerically, as well as algebraically. Proceeding in this way, students gain a broader, deeper, and more useful understanding of a concept or process. Even though concept development and technology are emphasized, manipulative skills are not ignored, and plenty of opportunities to practice basic skills are present. A brief look at the table of contents will reveal the importance of the function concept as a unifying theme. The second major objective of this book is the development of a library of elementary functions, including their important properties and uses. Having this library of elementary functions as a basic working tool in their mathematical tool boxes, students will be able to move into calculus with greater confidence and understanding. In addition, a concise review of basic algebraic concepts is included in Appendix A for easy reference, or systematic review. The third major objective of this book is to give the student substantial experience in solving and modeling real world problems. Enough applications are included to convince even the most skeptical student that mathematics is really useful. Most of the applications are simplified versions of actual real-world problems taken from professional journals and professional books. No specialized experience is required to solve any of the applications. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Condition
Came in the mail quite quickly and is in very good condition. No tears, scratches or anything. just a few pencil marks on a few pages. Definitely not complaining considering how much money this saved me! (:

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Textbook
To be honest, I am very frustrated with this book.My biggest complaint about it is that the examples that are worked out (not explained mind you) often times have no connection to the homework problems. In fact the homework problems are always much more difficult, so the textbook doesn't prepare you for what you need to know.It is beyond me how the author thinks we can solve the homework problems, if he fails to show how they are approached in the first place. This author has no business writing textbooks and I haven't a clue why my college went with the book in the first place.

3-0 out of 5 stars Author could do better
I used this textbook for a trigonometry class. In many of the chapters, the author hardly explained many steps in how to do problems and leaves out important key examples and topics needed to do the homework problems. When the author actually does explain the examples, he gives only either the easiest examples possible or unrelated examples. What I dislike the most is that this author only gives practice problems that do not reinforce topics needed to do the homework problems.

Book was in great shape.Came in only about a week.Great service.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keep this book in School!!!
I like the basic algebra I presented in about 80 pages appendix A. It has more content and more exercises than most books. This is very good!! The calculator is intergrated in developing the content and in the exercises. In most cases the graphing utility is generic, but in a few places the TI 82-86 is mentioned. In chapter 5 the start of Trig, uses unit circle in first 4 sections, Right Trig is later in the chapter than most books present. ... Product Description
This series is the culmination of many years of teaching experience with the graphing calculator. The books were written from the beginning for use with the graphing calculator. Throughout the text, the authors emphasize the power of technology but provide numerous warnings of its limitations: they stress that only through understanding the mathematical concepts can students fully appreciate the power of graphing calculators and use technology appropriately.Additionally, the authors consistently use the same four-step process when introducing the different classes of functions. This allows students to easily make connections between graphs of functions and their associated equations and inequalities. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I hated this book.
This book stole my soul. I ate, slept, and drank with this book. It's gruesome green cover will forever haunt my dreams. It was terrible, almost as bad as the professor I had the first semester I took this class. Thank god I had a tutor for the 2nd time I had to take the class. I hate this book! I'm going to take it to church next sunday and have it exorcized. Also I spent more time getting to know my tutor than this book...if you know what I mean.

1-0 out of 5 stars TI must have cut Mr. Hornsby a big check
I'm taking a precalc class that uses this text as a refresher before beginning an undergraduate degree in Physics. In the early 90' I'd taken Algebra, Statistics, Precalc, and even a few Calculus classes (over 10 math classes in all). Out of all the math texts I've used, this is by far the worst. The examples are so poorly explained, I ALWAYS end up having to refer to one of my old texts. The book was written to be used with TI calculators, only problem is, no key stokes on how to perform a particular operation are included. Normally this should be the realm of your trusty owners manual, but if a math text is geared for a particular brand of calculator and the faculty at your college are forcing that brand of calculator down the students throats, then the book should offer some instruction on the calculator. I'm actually thinking about finishing my math at another college that does NOT use this text. If you're just looking for a reference book for precalc, look elsewhere. ... Read more
