2-0 out of 5 stars Didn't work for me
This book has a lot of valuable information on the mechanical workings of the digestive system, however, the types of foods suggested are high fat, high sugar, and many times, bloating, gassy, and in general, difficult to digest. Here is my semi-qualified, and life-experienced opinion. The first thing you want to do is count the amount of calories you are consuming each day to make sure that you are eating enough for your height, body-type, activity level, etc. You can check that out on Pyramid.gov. If you are consuming enough, you need to rule out any medical reason for losing, or not maintaining a normal pweight. If you check out okay, then you want to think about what happened to make you lose your appetite, i.e., did you take any medication? Antibiotics and many other drugs can trigger anorexia, which is not necessarily the classic anorexia nervosa disorder, but a type of eating disorder that can become habitual. It can also be part of OCD (obssessive compulsive disorder) in which youranxiety manifests itself in an eating disorder. The recommendations that this book offers will then not be applicable for your situation and you will just gag on the volume and the high sugar/fat content of the food it suggests. You need to be EASY on your digestive system and go slow. I found Ensure a quality beverage that helps add weight healthfully. It is very tasty (experiment with the single bottles until you find a flavor you like)and it is similar to the stuff that they use for feeding tubes. Go to Ensure.com as they offer coupons, recipes, and will even send you a sample bottle.

After going to the Movies with Dr. Cook (as we all know he's into children) and sitting for and hour and half watching him drull over moto moto in madagascar .....the light finally hit me ....i always wanted to be part of culture...i always felt left out and the last one to be choosen for any games ....now the tables have turn as i should establish my social stabilitywith my recent 85 pound weight gain ..... LOOK OUT JAPPer ...cause mama is coming home BIGGER AND BETTER!!

The only book of its kind, and following its advice did wonders to undo my underweight struggles. Thank you, Dr. Rueben!

4-0 out of 5 stars works
Prior to buying this book I was 6'4" 165 lbs. I've tried many different things to gain weight (I once got up to 180 through weight lifting and protein shakes, but came back down). It's hard unless you make eating more a habit and know how to do it, which this book explains. After just about two months with this books help, I've gained 17 pounds and I now weigh 182 (and climbing). The one shortcoming of the book is that it should include a basic exercise section, so that the new weight doesn't just go to your gut, which it probably will if you don't work out some. Overall, definitely a good buy which will provide you with real help in gaining weight. It includes mealplans and tips to get more calories, which is the strongest area of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars I packed the pounds!
I have been UNUSUALLY stick-thin all my life, and I heard all the "Oh you should be happy you can eat and eat and not gain weight, " and"I wish I had your metabolism." Well being close to 30 with no womanly figure, no hips, no butt, no thighs, no chest, is not something to be envious of.
This books really did help me to understand that yes, I was eating, but I had to just be more focused on picking the foods I could get the most calories from.
I gained the most weight I have been my whole life, unfortunately I lost it as fast as I gained it. I gave my book to a friend, and am ordering another copy for myself, I know if it worked once, it can work again..but you have to really work at maintaining it...like ANY weight program.

The only reason I didnt give it 5 stars was because he doesnt go into much detail about how to maintain, but I did gain 8 pounds within one month..which is a record for me! ... Read more

Managing depression safely, naturally, and without side effects

For years scientists have searched for a treatment to relieve the pain of depression and other mood disorders -- one that's safe enough for nursing mothers, children, and the elderly -- without the side effects associated with medicines like Prozac, Zoloft, and lithium. Thanks to Dr. Andrew Stoll's groundbreaking research, that search may well be over.

Stoll found that omega-3 fatty acids, already known for their importance in preventing heart disease, Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer, also play a crucial role in mental health. They regulate and enhance mood, sharpen memory, and even aid concentration and learning. Though these remarkable substances are abundant in common fish oils and other foods, the average Western diet includes far too few of the most common sources. Fortunately, our deficient diets and attendant depression can be reversed. The Omega-3 Connection provides readers with all the information they need to restore their natural balance of omega-3 fatty acids, including

  • Which omega-3-rich foods to eat
  • The most effective over-the-counter supplements
  • How to integrate flaxseed and fish oils into diet and medication plans
  • Simple recipes, supplement doses and sources, and more Amazon.com Review
A must-read for anyone dealing with depression, The Omega-3Connection by Andrew L. Stoll, M.D., strikes yet another blow against the standard American diet. We already know that years of noshing on highly processed foods have saddled us with sky-high rates of heart disease, obesity, and related conditions. But, as we're starting to understand now, our eating habits may also be subtly altering our brain chemistry, leaving us vulnerable toanxiety disorders and depression. Only in this case, it's not just whatwe're eating--it's what we're not eating: foods containing omega-3essential fatty acids--the "good fats" that help maintain optimal brainfunction.

In his book, Stoll, the director of the psychopharmacology research lab atBoston's McLean Hospital and assistant professor of psychiatry at HarvardMedical School, suggests that restoring our body's natural balance ofomega-3s may help alleviate (and prevent) many types of depression--evenfor those who don't respond to traditional antidepressants. Omega-3s mayalso prove helpful with other problems, such as the inability to handlestress, memory loss, and cognitive decline. The book contains a "renewalplan" designed to help readers put Stoll's concepts intopractice, recipes for omega-3-rich dishes, advice for choosing supplements, and dosages for therapeutic use.

Although Stoll is quick with the caveat that much of the research onomega-3s and brainfunction is still evolving, he makes a compelling case for using these fatsto regulate depression and other cognitive disorders. Along with majorepidemiological evidence that shows lower rates of depression in thosecultures that consume a great deal of omega-3s, Stoll's own studiesindicate that boosting their intake can reduce depression symptoms. AndStoll cites stacks of additional studies suggesting that omega-3s can alsohelp with major depression, schizophrenia, and postpartum depression. Goingeven further, Stoll makes a strong argument that omega-3 deficiency couldbe contributing to rising rates of teen violence and attention deficitdisorders.

Of course, depression should never be treated without physiciansupervision. But in laying the groundwork for the omega-3s to emerge as thenext big thing in natural depression therapy, Stoll certainly gives us foodfor thought. --Norine Dworkin ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Omega book
The book is good for the most part. It was very informative and to the point. A lot of scientific explanations which help the reader understand the nutritional value of omegas. I say 90 % of those explanations were comprehensible from my point of view. I think the book is too short. More research needs to be done. More clinical studies. I just wish I could get more information on the alternative medications for bipolar disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting News About Omega-3
I have always taken Omega-3 in the form of flaxseed oil for all of the healthy properties that it offers.I found it very exciting to see and learn from this book of the healthy benefits to the brain in particular to the aid to those with depression. It is amazing how we often can complicate solutions so much and then find some of the answers in something as accessible as the ingestion of Omega-3 healthy fats.

I think that "The Omega-3 Connection" is an encouraging expose of what is possible with the addition of certain nutrients that we have superficially heard about. This books takes you deeper, and gets you to really appreciate the marvels of this food supplement to aide your general health as well as serious conditions such as depression and bi-polar disorders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent information
Well written. Interesting & full of studies w/ references. The author is Director of the Psychopharmacology Research Laboratory at McLean Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, as well as the recipient of the 1999 Klerman Award from the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression. He only mentions once, the great brand of fish oil that his wife created & offers other recommended brands as well. Best book on Omega-3's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should know about Omega 3s
I have not read this book beyond the first few pages, but I wanted to add my testimony about Omega 3s. I have been suffering from anxiety problems for a number of years and it was getting progressively worse. I stumbled on Omega 3s in a multivitamin and at the same time started getting much better. At first I didn't make the connection, but then I stopped and got worse again after a couple of months. I really believe that taking Fish oil pills with a high dose of DHA and EPA has brought my anxiety disorder under control as effectively as antidepressants had in the past. I urge anyone with anxiety or depression problems to try. It can only help your overall health.

5-0 out of 5 stars easy read.good book for pregnancy, post natal or moms!
GREAT BOOK! easy read.basic nutritional info every1 should understand.i had no intention of reading the entire book but it was so interesting!based on testing [much of it lab rats + human] it explains the impacts of our intake of omega 3 in relation to omega 6 + as well as basic explanaions of omega 6 & 3. it also breaks down omega 3 explaining EPA + DHA ratios.discusses the effects on specific diseases. 1 very interesting point explains how lab rats on the same basic routine were fed supplements of omega 3 & the other omega 6.the omega 3 rats had 25% less body fat!the part about how our brains are smaller in recent history than the rather than larger as is historically true also grabbed my attention. interesting info about pregnancy + postnatal depression as well.very important book for mom's in my opinion! ... Product Description
Two headache specialists offer their innovative Headache Reduction Program, for treating and preventing recurring headaches

Twenty-eight million people in the United States suffer from chronic, recurrent, often disabling headaches-half of them forgoing medical attention in favor of analgesics that do nothing to prevent the next one. In Breaking the Headache Cycle , the authors-migraine sufferers themselves-present the integrated Headache Reduction Program (HARP) that they developed at the Princeton Headache Clinic.

Based on the central insights that the predisposition to headaches is a sign of an unusually sensitive nervous system and that drugs are only one component of the most successful treatment plans, this remarkable program instructs readers in a range of techniques, including:

    - how to relieve the pain of migraines
    - how to detect and ward off oncoming headaches
    - how to prevent migraines from even threatening

The innovative solutions detailed in Breaking the Headache Cyclerange from simple breathing exercises and dietary changes to support groups and the latest medications. In this thorough and accessible guide, the authors promise new relief for those already being treated for recurring headaches and for those who currently suffer in silence.

4-0 out of 5 stars How To Think About Headaches
This book taught me how to think about the migraines I was suffering from.I realized that my reaction upon the onset of another migraine was doing nothing to help me.It hurt my mood, stressed me out, and probably made my headaches hurt worse and last longer. This book taught me quite a bit. They are essentially pushing meditation and yoga.I haven't yet been disciplined enough to set aside time for those into my daily life, but I do try to stretch more and do deep breathing whenever I think of it.It feels like it helps.

4-0 out of 5 stars Headache help
I have read about 4 books on headaches and lots ofmagazine articles and websites. This was probably the best because it was the most informative. It let me know what things I was taking that may help with my headache but usually caused "rebound" headaches. It also helped with what foods that help and what foods to stay away from.It was about as helpful as a book can be but I still suffer with lots of headaches. Now I am more inclined to suffer through them.I don't want the rebound effects of what most drugs cause.

5-0 out of 5 stars A relief for migraine sufferers
This book has been a godsend. I have suffered from migraines since I was a teenager. Nothing worked to relieve my pain - I would just have to suffer through them until they were over.

After reading reviews of this book on Amazon, I decided to give it a try. What an amazing difference! I will not tell you that I don't get migraines anymore, which I do. But this book tells you ways to prevent them and to lessen the pain during a migraine. Its fantastic!

I went from having at least one migraine a week to one a month. They used to last me for days, but using the exercises in the book, I just take 5 minutes and it lessens up the pain enough for me to function or even breaks it all together.

Wonderful book! A must-read for migraine sufferers. I even plan to buy my mother a copy for Christmas.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the Best Headache Book - Little Practical Advice ...
The better book is Bucholz's Heal Your Headache which is the most no-nonsense, practical book out there.Breaking the Headache Cycle is mostly philosophical rambling about stress reduction and breathing with little useful advice. The chapter on the pros and cons of current medications is the only useful part of the book. The rest is fluff. If you check out the Bucholz book, you'll see what I'm talking about.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life!
Since I have suffered from headaches all my life, I have eagerly read any book I can get my hands on that may lead to some relief. This is the first book that I can truly say has SOLVED my problem! For many years, I have had almost-daily headaches and even as recent as Feb 2007, I had 2 to 3 headaches a day (a total of 46 headaches that month alone)!I took Zomig to get relief. It's effective and very expensive but I also knew I was taking WAY too much medicine. This book is full of great information about the hows and whys of migraine headaches and also many, many suggestions of options to break the pattern and get relief. It's very practical, easy to read with stories of other peoples headache histories. As I read it, it seemed they were writing about ME and my headache history. Two very powerful suggestions from that book that changed my life: the deep breathing exercises when I am feeling stress and a low dose of amitriptyline, as prescribed by my doctor.Because of this book, I can truly say - I NO LONGER GET HEADACHES!
If you have recurring headaches - you MUST read this book! ... Read more

Kick-start your metabolism into high gear with Bob Greene's revolutionary new exercise and health program!Amazon.com Review
Fitness is a lifetime commitment, but you can accelerate results and transform your body in 12 weeks, says Bob Greene, best known as Oprah Winfrey's personal trainer. Not for the "move a little" crowd, this program is intense and challenging, whatever your starting level. "It's a bit like boot camp," Greene acknowledges. You'll do vigorous aerobic exercise 15 (beginning level), 30 (intermediates), or 45 (advanced) minutes 6 days a week, and increase 2 minutes each week--and double your usual minutes for one workout a week. You'll also strength train with dumbbells or machines and do functional training (strengthening stabilizing muscles).

The eating plan is not a diet--rather Greene describes 5 eating rules to help you eat fewer and burn more calories: curb emotional eating, eat breakfast, establish an eating cut-off time, drink lots of water, and limit alcohol. You'll get enough calories to sustain your intense exercise routine, but cut out the calories otherwise stored as fat.

Greene, author of Get With the Program and Make the Connection, also analyzes popular diets, and fills the book with motivational stories of his successful clients. Recommended for those who are ready to commit to an intense program to burn fat, increase metabolism, and change habits for the long haul. --Joan Price

    Special Interview with Bob Greene
Not for the "move a little" crowd, Bob Greene's Total Body Makeover promises "Maximum Results in Minimum Time" to readers who are ready to commit to an intense exercise regimen during this twelve-week program. Sounds simple enough--but it wouldn't do the book justice to oversimplify its premise. Greene's genuine attachment to address the root causes for poor eating and activity habits, and to guide the reader through building the strong emotional foundation necessary to undergo physical changes, make Total Body Makeover a standout companion to transforming your body, inside and out. Amazon.com editor Nathalie Farage recently caught up with Greene. Read on.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good to get started-not end all be all.
I picked up this book off the shelf that I have just had sitting around.I don't remember buying it-but I have it.I picked it up a few weeks ago as I needed a kick in the butt to start working out again. It did-I am once again exercising regularly and I have Bob Greene to thank for it. This book inspired me and convinced me that strength training is important.

My problem with the book is the rigid exercise routine. The cardio was good. You start at 15 minutes and add 2 minutes every week. However you end up doing the same strength workout every week.It is OK-however I thought you need to mix it up to work muscles in different ways. Also, as a former and now getting back into runner, I have specific exercises that I need to do to avoid injury.I modified the program for myself doing what I need to do to focus on my core muscles-but that is because I know to do this.I also think that if you do the same ab routine every day that your muscles just get used to it and you eventually plateau. So again, I throw in other ab exercises.

My biggest gripe is what Greene says about yoga and pilates. He claims that you cannot substitute these with cardio, strength, or functional exercises. I'd like to see him say that after trying a Vinyasa or ashtanga class. These are very vigorous forms of yoga that would get anyone's heart rate up.And regarding strength, my triceps and hamstrings are still sore after a class I took 2 days ago.I wasn't getting sore anymore with the 8 exercises. As far as pilates-it's a great core workout-and after 6 weeks of the same ab routine it was hard to avoid the temptation of a pilates class. So I worked it in.

So bottom line-it is a very motivating book that can help get you in the habit of exercise. Also-thanks Bob, for convincing me to strength train. Are exercise the end all be all? I don't think so. Use it as a base-modify it to make it work for you.And finally-Vinyasa yoga is a cardio workout and while I don't think you should substitute it more than once a week-you can probably skip a strength training session sometimes and do a Vinyasa class. It mixes things up a bit I think.

5-0 out of 5 stars Changed my life forever!
I read this book and it was a wake up call for me. I have slowly lost weight ever since and there's no going back for me now. It's not am I going to work out today, it's when am I going to work out today? I don't make anynore excuses and I have 3 kids. Age's 13, 9 and 3!
