Product Description

Long before a "dangerous" book was all the rage there was The American Boy's Handy Book by Daniel Beard, a beloved classic for generations of youngsters. Specially designed to provide loads of ideas for adventures and games both indoors and outdoors during each season of the year, The American Boy's Handy Book was originally published in 1882 and became an instant bestseller.

Now, Tuttle Publishing is bringing this much-loved book back for a new generation of boys to enjoy. If you're not too young to fly a kite or too old to enjoy a day fishing, The American Boy's Handy Book is chock full of fun activities intended just for you! There's something for every day of the year: making an aquarium, rigging and sailing small boats, camping without a tent, making a cornstalk fiddle, trapping, building a snow fort, and of course tons of other games and crafts, too.

Daniel Beard firmly believed in letting boys make their own playthings, encouraging them to value their own hard work and gain the skills needed throughout life to successfully invent, construct and dream. In this world of instant gratification with ever-younger generations coveting the ubiquitous cell phones, computers and iPods, it seems as though the imagination and sense of adventure that permeated our country's past have all but disappeared. Welcome back the joys of childhood with The American Boy's Handy Book, and prepare to make old favorites new again!

4-0 out of 5 stars Could be sub-titled: Three Felonies a Day
This is an extraordinary book - written before TV invaded our homes.Reading this book was a bit sad - the skills assumed of a 12 year old boy then are rare today; even among scouts and free range kids.

As with the Dangerous Book for boys; it is not a book that you can hand to a child and expect them to be able to follow or remain interested in.Once they have completed a few projects and discovered the joy of doing something themselves even though it is difficult then they will most likely continue these types of activities.

WARNING: if you do not trust your child with their own pocket knife you will probably not get the full benefit of this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning more about BSA
This is a good look into the brain of Daniel Carter Beard! I respect the man

5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite book as a kid and taught me allot of usefull things that most aren't taught today
This book can occupy a kid for almost their entire childhood with the ideas inside meanwhile teaching them allot of things that most kids in today's world never do. Now i hear allot of people talking about supposed racial slurs, yet there are no slurs at all, simply the terminology is of a different era. The book never uses the N word, but things like colored people which was the appropriate term in that era that was NOT derogatory. This book enthralled me from the first time i found it buried in our bookshelf and still does, i use it as a reference on how to make proper knots, or cool project ideas, finding ways to have a little adventure in my life. You will find complex projects that require a month of work, or ones that take ten minutes, it is a must for any American boy who wants to be more than just a gameboy kid who if stuck in a tight situation has no survival skills outside of suburbia.

4-0 out of 5 stars awesome book for boys
Thank you so much for this book. I bought it as a gift for my duaghter's newborn son. My son-in-law read it cover to cover and said he can't wait to try out so many of the great outdoor and project oriented ideas in this book. It will become part of their library fro years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ameicana
I read this book in 5th grade when I checked it out of our school library. I remember needing to learn how to tie a certain knot which is why I checked it out. At the time I thought it was pretty interesting but I basically left most of it unread and returned it when my knot project was finished. Reading it later as an adult I wish that I had given it more attention when I was a kid because it is a wonderful book. It has a place in every home, particularly homes with children(big and small alike) Another interesting point is the languauge of the book. Being that it was written well over 100 yrs ago the book has a bit of a different dialect. However it's pleasant to read. It's nice to see even a book on leisure topics written more formally and it's a shame more books aimed at children and parents aren't written this way.
This book would be a great gift to any family looking to do something on a weekend other than watch TV. Books like this should be on the required reading list in elementary schools, not some of the garbage that's there now. ... Read more

Camp wouldn't be camp without troubles to share. But there are also new friends to make, adventurous trails to be climbed, and toasty evenings by the fire to enjoy (not to mention a fair bit of silliness). Classic camp-song favorites-from 'Rise and Shine' and 'Found a Peanut' to 'Kum Ba Yah'-and vibrant, folksy illustrations make this offering a musical walk through the campgrounds for generations to treasure. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars "bait and switch"
... that is what my clerk (and a patron at hand) said when I compared the two copies of our books with two different covers and inside it (because the party was going to take the two books out-- and initially it was the same book), the photos were on differing pages.
I explained, this is how books (different publication years, different covers, revised content, etc.) are sold...
after telling them this,
I had a hard time not being annoyed over this fact
and focus
on THE CONTENT
so I could read it unbiased,
and
review it
without prejudice.

Excellent book! I learned alot from it! I have no fishing experience,
and
I hope the "drag system" indicated on page 12
of (the one I initially read) : # ISBN-10: 1429608242
# ISBN-13: 978-1429608244

(see also: # ISBN-10: 073682412X
# ISBN-13: 978-0736824125)

... always works!
I do wish there was a photo of "gaff",
sinkers, bubblers
and though there is a photo of a depth finder,
when the maps, charts and GPS are
clearly mentioned,
it would have been nice to include photos,
especially for a child no less and an adult who is "just learning!"

An interesting, informative READ! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat Helpful
This book is somewhat helpful yet it is to the point of being to technical on the
electric system and the batteries not what most people are looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent & informative
People giving this a 1star rating need to get a clue!....book does cover things with a common sense point of view, but still very informative and well written.

3-0 out of 5 stars Would be great for serious boondockers
Our intent is to boondock a couple days a week.I think this book is much more helpful for those who are really serious about long term boondocking.A lot of the information provided is on how to best supply your electricity needs. This didn't apply to us as we wouldn't boondock longer than our house battery would last.

If you want to boondock and watch TV/use your computer etc then you might find this information helpful.

The book does provide some places where a person can boondock.I wish it contained more information on BLM land and other details on places a person can boondock.

Overall we didn't feel like this book provided much useable information.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not much new stuff.
Book is OK, but if you have read other RV books you probably have read the material in this book before. If you are new to RVing, it is a well written book and you will probably learn from it.

4-0 out of 5 stars "OK"
I bought this book to learn more about how to boondock. Most of the suggestions were things I already knew.More than half of the book is devoted to the electrical system -- batteries, solar panels, inverters, wind generators, etc.(The author must have a strong interest in this subject.)If you are interested in this subject and are a newcommer, the book will be helpful. My own experience has been that even though I have solar panels at my home, when camping, you usually want to park in the shade under trees. While driving, your alternator does the charging. Also, as another reviewer mentioned, the list of boondocking locations was very minimal.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun book for kids
This is a fun book for kids.It was less detailed than I would have liked, but if you have a parent who knows what they are doing there are a lot of great ideas in this book.My kids love it, and I will keep looking and practicing to put some of these ideas and projects into play. There are many more ideas than just can cooking.Cooking on a rock, in a paper cup, in a pit, and in a homemade solar oven are also included.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't let the title fool you
I remember cooking meals in a can when I was little, so I was excited to order this book for my husband, who is our son's Cubmaster. However I was disappointed (and maybe I didn't read the reviews close enough) to find that there are very few actual recipes for cooking in a can.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very cute, and useful too
This is a really cute and useful book.It has a lot of color illustrations to make it very attractive for a child to read. Also, the concept of cooking over your campfire -- or over several different types of home-made grills that they teach you how to make -- is fun and different. This actually seems to be book two of a series -- the first looks like it's called "Cooking on a Stick, Campfire recipes for kids" by Linda White.

Anyway, the chapters are as follows:

Planning and Packing (make a cooking apron)

Setting up Camp (with a craft for making a banner for your site)

Campires (make a wood carrier out of a sweatshirt, and make some different kinds of fire starters)

Cooking on Outdoor Stoves (make a tin-can grill, canyon sandwiches with English muffins, recipe for asparagus "forests")

Cooking in a (full-sized) garbage can (make a garbage can cooker, make a small "buddy" burner, pizza soup recipe, apple stampede recipe [which is just apple sauce])

Cooking in a paper bag or paper cup (recipe for rise 'n' shine breakfast [bacon and eggs in a bag], chocolate on a stick)

Cooking in Leaves and other foods (bean burgers recipe, bloomin' muffins [muffins you cook in orange peels! how cool!]

Hot rock cooking (sunrise toast and hot rock chicken)

Pit Cooking (fondue and cake)

Solar oven cooking (veggie pie and cookies with granola)

Spit cooking (mushrooms and kebobs)

Dutch oven cooking (stew and cake)

The recipes seem to be well explained and simple enough for kids who are the correct age to actually read the book.(Amazon lists ages 4-8, which from the kid-style illustrations seems right on.)The gimmick of cooking in the woods is fun and safety instructions are included and explained. For example, they explain what makes a good rock to cook on!And they include a long list of supplies and safety equipment, even explaining how to properly -- and safely -- douse a fire. They also cover "what is safe drinking water?" and how to build the perfect campfire.

For those of you who are Family Fun magazine fans, (I appreciate their crafts and clever ideas), for camping fans, and for cooking fans who would like to try something new with their kids, this book is a fun addition to your library. ... Read more
