5-0 out of 5 stars delicious recipes using real food
I received my copy of the original edition in 1988. It has become one of my favorite cookbooks - and that is saying quite a bit as I have a LOT of cookbooks! It is wonderful to have entire menus listed as that takes much of the work out of meal planning. Every recipe I have tried has been delicious. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and the descriptions and little stories that go along with each menu are charming. The back section of the cookbook offers a myriad of almost-forgotten recipes for making your own condiments, jams, pickles, etc.The apple butter recipe has become a favorite for gift giving, the homemade bread recipes work every time, the pie recipes are dangerously delicious. It is important to note that all of this good food can happen easily in our own kitchens without the use of processed packaged "foods".More wisdom from this author is found in the seasonal groupings of the menus and recipes.Food bought and prepared in the season in which it is grown makes for the freshest, best tasting and healthiest meals. It also helps to bring variety to our tables and a connection to our local area. ... Read more

While this book is easy to use the recipes are simple, I found it to be very old school in diabetic thinking. There are so many advances that have been made since the publication of this book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Down to Earth Cooking
Lost my original hard cover copy and was delighted to get the new publication.Best down to earth home cooking book ever.Helpful tips and suggestions are tremendous especially for the newer cook.A definite must have for the kitchen. 4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice book
Hi, I love the book its perfect for my kitchen abilities. The bokk is nice and with good price. thank you

5-0 out of 5 stars two cook books
My wife who does not like to cook and does very little has probably 50 cookbooks that she keeps buying. I asked her why and she says they are for me. I told her I have two cookbooks.
One was my moms and is at least 60 years old and I have the Purity Flour book that my wife had before we maried in 1970.
I don't follow books real closely since I am fortunate enough to have a good imagination and change receipes all the time.
I have made the chilli from this book for many years and when we have family get togethers I always take it along, it is an amazing receipe and never bring any home.
It has a great variety of receipies and is the best starter book. Guess I'm still starting I still check it first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best investment in a cookbook.
I was given this cookbook as a wedding gift in 1968 and taught myself how to cook from it.The step-by-step pictures of how to bake bread were especially helpful.Recently I lost my original copy and was so glad to find it in a re-print on the internet. Thanks to Amazon for reconnecting me with my "right arm" in the kitchen!

5-0 out of 5 stars OldBaker
Hello,
When I first started seriously baking back in 1968, I was given the Purity Cook Book. It was easy to follow and the recipes had ingredients that I enjoyed. Over the years, my cookbook was tattered, torn and spattered with ingredients. I had ALL the pages BUT they were not in order.
Over these past few years, I started searching for a newer version of the cookbook.Just last month I FOUND 'The AllNew Purity Cook Book' on Amazon.com.I was so happy and excited to be able to have a CLEAN version of my FAVORITE cookbook. I have other cook books but NOT like this one.
I would recommend the Purity Cook Book to everyone. It is a special cook book and I know you will be very happy with all its recipes.

Product Description
There's no better way to experience fine hospitalitythan by visiting a country inn. If you're a guest at Saint John's Inn on the Cove, you can also treat yourself to beautifully prepared meals. In Tide's Table, innkeepers Ross and Willa Mavis have created the ultimate Maritime cookbook, updating traditional Maritime recipes and adding hundreds of new ones. An ideal companion from morning until night, Tide's Table reflects the Mavises' relaxed sense of hospitality. Included in the book are recipes for everything from simple entres to holiday fare, including a traditional plum pudding that even Martha Stewart would admire. Willa, the "Queen of Condiments" according to CBC Radio's Vicki Gabereau, leads readers through the preparation of pickles and relishes. A new version of chow chow, a spicy chili sauce, a chutney that combines apples with rhubarb -- nothing misses her unique sense of colour and flavour. Meanwhile, Ross demonstrates how to prepare savoury treats such as Creamy Fiddlehead Soup, Lover's Chicken (a Valentine's Day creation) and Maple Barbecued Salmon. Featuring more than 200 recipes and dozens of special tips as well as metric and imperial measurements, Tide's Table is an indispensable guide to contemporary Maritime cuisine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious, easy to prepare comfort food.
We picked up this cookbook when we vacationed in Nova Scotia in August of 2001. Although it is written by the innkeepers of the Inn on the Cove in Saint John's, the food contained in the cookbook is very similar to the food we found and ate in Nova Scotia. We enjoyed this cuisine very much. Especially anything having to do with seafood.
This book did not just sit on the shelf after I returned home. I have made and enjoyed the following recipes: Pumpkin Bread-delicious and moist, Clam Chowder--very good and easy to prepare, Versatile Spaghetti Sauce--the addition of paprika made it one of my husband's favorites, Maritime Meatloaf--very good, Chicken Pot Pie--excellent, I altered it a bit because my son does not like mushrooms.
I've read all through the cookbook and plan on trying many more recipes. I have to say, I have NOT had any bad luck with any of the recipes I have tried yet!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is damn good.
This very book is very good and help full in reading.I would like to suggest all the readers to read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Uncomplicated Home Receipes
This cookbook is made all the more interesting by the fact that you can actually stay at the authors' Bed and Breakfast Inn and get a good sampling of the results of their receipes. The "Inn on the Cove" is located in the suburbs of Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. The cookbook contains about 250 receipes. It includes: "Bountiful Beginnings"- Breakfasts, (just what you would expect from a B&B); "From the Kitchen Stove"- breads, pickles, and condiments; "Teasers& Tempters"- appetizers, soups, and salads; "Main Dishes from Land and Sea"; "The Great Outdoors"- receipes for the barbecue; "Celebrating the Harvest"- vegetable side dishes; "Sweet Finale"- cakes, cookies, and deserts. The receipes are straight forward and practical. Ingredients are readily available, except maybe for dulce, the main ingredient for "Dulce Soup". This is a seaweed found in the New Brunswick area and very popular for some local dishes. (I think you have to grow up with it or acquire a special taste for it.) Other than that ingredients can be found relatively easy. Neither of the authors have had professional cooking training, but have both grown up with a love for cooking and entertaining guests. So their receipes are not only practical, but tried and true. Unlike some cookbooks originating outside of the United States, the ingredients are given in both metric and the U.S. system of lbs, ounces, tbsp, cups, etc.

A local cooking show is video taped at the authors' Inn for broadcast on the Fundy Cable network. Many of the receipes found in the book have been demostrated on this show.

You will find this book an interesting addition to you library of cookbooks ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Bookfor all Cooks in the Making - or any Chef in Business!
The Cookbook is a book for experts in the making. This is actually the textbook I am using in the chef's course that I am taking as part of a hotel management program. There are absolute beginners and experts in our course and we are all finding the book and AMAZING source and reference.
It is chock-full of terms, photos and guides --- I wish I had been given this book as a gift or bought it when it was first available --- it is without a doubt the BEST cooking guide on the market (for Canadians or Americans alike!)
Any cook would be a fool to NOT have this book on their shelves.
The recipes are AMAZING and the guidelines and instructions are invaluable for any business or individual who loves to cook.
The CD-ROM included is a valuable tool and a lot of fun to work with a play with ... better than any time-wasting video game on the market!
I cannot wait to buy his Baking Book and work through it from front to back ... I imagine it is as good as this one ... from what I have seen of Mr. Gisslen's books and writing method's I cannot imagine it is nothing but STELLAR! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Food Every Time!
Planning a mid-week meal?Planning a party? This book will do for both.I have tried almost every recipe in here and everything, I mean everything from birthday cakes to roast beef, turns out great.Of particular note, a spaghetti bolognese my family clamours for, as-good-as-the-noodle-stand Pad Thai, and cinnamon buns to start Saturday night for a laid-back Sunday morning. There are lots of recipes for those days when you have a couple of things in the fridge and are wondering what to do with them. This book has beautiful colour illustrations so you will know how to fold perogies, roll sushi or stuff a turkey.Better than the Silver Palate for everyday cooking.

A version of this cookbook has been in my family for several generations. It was "THE" item to give to new brides when my mother was married and I believe my grandmother gave one to all of us. I ordered my copies to pass along to my children...My son is even using it because it is easy to understand the methods. I truly have a memory with every receipe.

I ordered Kate Aitken's Canadian Cook Book, for a friend of mine, his Mother had used this cookbook for many years, when he was growing up.Many of the recipes were favourites of his and so I ordered a copy.. He used it Christmas morning to make his family pancakes, using dear Kate's standby recipe, the pancakes were a hit with everyone and just as delicious as he remembered from his childhood. I love to cook myself and Kate's book is easy to read and understand, lots of really basic good old fashioned almost hand-me-down family recipes.
