Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Laotians are descended from Tai peoples from what is now southern China and northern Vietnam beginning approximately three thousand years ago, where many Tai peoples remain to this day. The designation Lao probably originates from an ancient people, the Wenda Laos, that were a branch of the Tai peoples and one of the groups that settled Southeast Asia. Population pressures, finding suitable habitat for wet-rice cultivation, and escape from the growing tensions of Chinese settlement and Mongol invasions pushed the Tai tribes further south along the Mekong river valleys. Evidence of these migrations are included in legends of Khun Borom, a possibly mythical king whose descendants begot the various Tai peoples. Although Lan Xang is usually considered the first Lao kingdom, although other kingdoms and principalities in what is now Laos and Isan flourished before this date. The Tai peoples pushed out earlier groups of Austronesian and Mon-Khmer peoples and established their own kingdoms. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Cajuns are an ethnic group mainly living in Louisiana, consisting of the descendants of Acadian exiles (French-speaking settlers from Acadia or Nova Scotia, in the maritime provinces of what is now Canada). Today, the Cajuns make up a significant portion of south Louisiana's population, and have exerted an enormous impact on the state's culture. Acadia consisted mainly of present-day Nova Scotia, and included parts of eastern Quebec, the Maritime provinces, and modern-day Maine. The origin of the designation Acadia is credited to the explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano, who on his sixteenth century map applied the ancient Greek name "Arcadia" to the entire Atlantic coast north of Virginia. "Arcadia" derives from the Arcadia district in Greece which since Classical antiquity had the extended meanings of "refuge" or "idyllic place". The Dictionary of Canadian Biography says: "In the 17th century Champlain fixed its present orthography, with the 'r' omitted, and (the Canadian historian) W.F.Ganong has shown its gradual progress northwards, in a succession of maps, to its resting place in the Atlantic Provinces." ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Joanna Kadi!
This is an excellent anthology of arab-american feminist writings, each essay and poem discussing how it feels to be an Arab-American woman growing up in the US.

As an Arab-American woman, I felt comforted and empowered by these writings.

4-0 out of 5 stars A TRIMUMPH FOR ARAB-AMERICAN WOMEN
As an Arab-American woman growing up in the United States, I found this book to be very refreshing.I noticed as a child in America that Arab women were either perceived as very docile and covered from head to toe oras whores that danced seductively for men only to have alternative plans toget ahead as in the case of the book One Thousand and One Arabian Nightswhich I read when I was younger.either way, Arab women were not seen in agood light by Western culture. This is a book that presents Arab women andwomen all over the world as thinking, intelligent, and talented beings thatdeserve a say on today's social issues and women in society in general.Iactually went to a reading that featured the poets in the book as a way topromote the book in 1995 and found myself to be proud of who and what I am. I recommend this book to any women (or men) that are of Arab or Westerndecent. You will not be bored, that I can assure you.Thank you. ... Read more

Product Description

Working Families takes the reader onto the streets of Montreal and into the homes of its working-class families during the years that it became a major, industrial city. Between the 1860s and 1890s the expansion of wage labour changed the bases of family survival. It offered new possibilities and created new points of tension within the families of the emerging working class. Here we meet the men, youth, and children who worked for wages. We see the women who stayed home with their young, cooked and sewed, planted gardens and tended animals, stretching their often meagre family wages into goods and services for survival. We also see the ingenuity and agony of women whose husbands lost their jobs, fell ill, drank up their wages, deserted their families, or died.

Working Families explores the complex variety of responses of working-class families to their new lives within industrial capitalist society, and offers new ways of looking at the industrial revolution in Canada.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Contemporary Literature Book
What I like about this book is the diversity it offers in terms of the authors published in the book.It is very much appreciated reading about contemporary authors who are Native-Americans, African-Americans, Mexican-Americans, Asian-Americans, and the like.Their views and writings certainly have added a diverse perspective to the world of literature. The poems, short stories, essays, and fictional drama pieces in the book open a new dimension and perspective in literature. The writings are refreshing and stimulating. They are closely related to reality and allow the imaginative spirit to expand and create specific imagery to go with selected pieces in the book. The instructive portion of the text is wonderful. Each chapter starts with an introduction and insight of what is to come.It breaks down the reading in such a way that the understanding is clear and unambiguous. The variety of exercises following each chapter allows for new perspectives, discussions, visions, and interpretations. This is an excellent book to read.Other excellent books to read are:"Trilogy Moments for the Mind, Body and Soul" with the new Epulaeryu poetry form; "The Language of Poetry Forms" by Tree Good; and, "Everyday Miracles" by Margaret Okubo.

5-0 out of 5 stars Literature from America's many ethnic groups
I have used this book for several years as a text in Composition classes. I even used it in writing classes in Africa. It's a "multicultural" text. The wonderful choices (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama) show that no matter who you are, you can use the powerfultool of the English language to write about your own experiences. Seemsobvious, but perhaps not. Great writing suggestions, too, just about aperfect book. It's too expensive, of course. But in the end, worth it. Iwish they'd come out with a third edition! ...
