Editorial Review

Product Description
A historical and descriptive study of the United States/Canadian mass communications "border war," this volume centers on millions of dollars spent annually by companies to advertise on U.S. border stations. Berlin chronicles this dispute as it evolves through its two stages: Canadian action (1970 to 1976) and U.S. response (1976 to 1988). He focuses on Canada's vision of the U.S. media--a "modern Trojan Horse" that has penetrated domestic media and will ultimately absorb Canadian culture and identity. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
In the first volume of "How Canadians Communicate" the editors examined and assessed the health of Canada's cultural industries circa 2003. In this second volume, they not only undertake a new examination of Canada's current media health, but also turn their attention to analysing the impact of the startling pace of global media proliferation on our country's media institutions. The revolutionary changes underway in mass media technology, from blogs to peer-to-peer networks and the ubiquitous cell-phone, have all imposed structural modifications to global communication systems, inexorably altering the fundamental ways in which Canadians communicate. The editors have carefully chosen essays that address the central issues of today's global media environment from a uniquely Canadian perspective.Grouped under the headings 'The Debate over Policy', 'The Quest for Identity', and 'The Struggle for Control', the topics ranging from media concentration to foreign ownership and the challenge of mass communication in an increasingly multicultural community, underscoring the way in which our media has operated in the past and how it must now adapt to a new media landscape. There is little doubt that Canadian media and cultural institutions have been buffeted by the sheer magnitude of new communication technologies. But with change comes opportunity, and the ability to re-evaluate current paradigms and look for better and more effective ways of adapting to new circumstances. "How Canadians Communicate II" will illuminate the present media climate, and in doing so, suggest new and challenging paths forward that will utilise the vast array of media technology to strengthen a uniquely Canadian cultural identity. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
This analysis of the journalism profession is unique in that it uses gender as a central explanatory variable, it is comparative, and it explores the impact of equity legislation on the profession in North American and Europe. The book's systematic focus on gender not only as a biological, but as a socially constructed attribute permits the author to address the systemic biases that are inherent in the social reproduction of the journalism profession. A gender approach can clarify the minority status of females in the profession and why there is a difference in the access, promotion, and remuneration between female and male staff. More importantly, the gender approach is able to pin-point the more intangible networks of male power, which exist outside the authority structure. Finally, this approach provides evidence of the difficulties females encounter in functioning in managerial roles. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
In Continentalizing Canadian Telecommunications Vanda Rideout examines active political resistance to the radical, neo-liberal transformation of Canadian telecommunications that has been orchestrated by the federal government, big business, and their powerful lobbyists over the last two decades. Rideout focuses on the protection of the public interest, a crucial element neglected by most recent studies, and shows that although alliances have been formed between labour, consumers, and public interest activists, significant disagreements over issues such as free trade, long distance and local competition, and a targeted subsidy program for very low-income Canadians have meant that this united front has not been able to counter the forces of the new neo-liberal telecommunication policy regime. Continentalizing Canadian Telecommunications details the complex relationships between the various corporate and government interests, shows how the changes they brought about have locked Canada's telecommunications system into the orbit of the US system, and discusses the implications this has for Canadians. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
This volume explores the political impact of journalistic discourse on international -- and especially Canadian/American -- relations. In so doing, it provides a comparative analysis of American and international press accounts of selected Canadian/American issues such as free trade, cruise missile testing, and acid rain. The intention of the book is to enhance understanding of the political significance of journalists' interpretations of Canadian/American affairs, although the communication perspective and method of news analysis of the book are appropriate for the study of the United States' news-mediated relations with other countries. This study also examines the way people negotiate news-mediated political discourse and how that communication process can influence international affairs.

Excerpt: Canada has a well-developed media sector, but its cultural output particularly in English films, television shows, and magazines is often overshadowed by imports from the United States. Television, magazines, and newspapers are primarily for-profit corporations based on advertising, subscription, and other sales-related revenues. Nevertheless, both the television broadcasting and publications sectors require a number of government interventions to remain profitable, ranging from regulation that bars foreign companies in the broadcasting industry to tax laws that limit foreign competition in magazine advertising. In the broadcasting sector, Canada has a government-funded broadcaster, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation/Société Radio-Canada, which operates radio and TV networks in English and French. As well, some provincial governments offer their own public educational TV broadcast services as well, such as Ontario's TVOntario and Quebec's Télé-Québec. Given Canada's small market and its position next to the dominant producer of feature films, the Canadian film industry receives substantial assistance from the government. In the 2000s, about half of the budget of a typical Canadian film came from various federal and provincial government sources. Canadian Reginald Aubrey Fessenden, the "Father of Radio Broadcasting", was the first person ever to broadcast a voice by radio waves that were heard by another person. On December 23, 1900, from a site on Cobb Island in the middle of the Potomac River near Washington, D.C., Fessenden said "one - two - three - four, is it snowing where you are Mr. Thiessen? If it is, would you telegraph back to me?" Mr. Thiessen, one mile away, confirmed, and...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=183181 ... Read more
