Product Description
This book is the first to address the problem of economic concentration and monolopoly in the newspaper industry. Some of the chapters are written from an economic standpoint and deal with the factors that bring about this occurence with the resulting effect that economic conditions have on newspapers' content. The volume also deals with public policy issues involving antitrust, joint operating agreements and other actions. This study provides pragmatic, reliable, independent information about the results of concentration and monopoly and considers their impact on concrete issues such as news diversity, employee relations, advertising rates, and concern for public service, among others. ... Product Description

Discourses of Domination explores the issue of racial bias in the Canadian English-language press. Applying critical discourse analysis as their principal methodology, Frances Henry and Carol Tator investigate the way in which the media produce, reproduce, and disseminate racist thinking through language and discourse.

The core of the text consists of a series of case studies, including several high-profile cases involving the alleged criminality of persons of colour. Using these case studies as a springboard, Henry and Tator demonstrate how the media construct people of colour, immigrants, refugees, and First Nations peoples as 'others' - those who live outside the 'imagined community' of Canada.Their analysis ultimately points to the tension between democratic liberalism as a defining characteristic of Canadian society and the collective racist ideology that is embedded in the dominant culture.Discourses of Domination thus provides a greater understanding of newer forms of racism, located within systems of cultural production and representation.

Product Description
"Over the last forty years, new technology and rapid concentration of ownership have caused fundamental changes in North American newspapers. Newsworkers' unions have struggled to protect their members and to reinvent themselves to keep up with the relentless pace of change in the workplace, and recent strikes such as that of Seattle newspaper workers highlight the ongoing challenges. This engaging and accessible book focuses on how the Newspaper Guild--the main union for reporters and editors--adopted a strategy of labor convergence, joining with other media workers in the large and diverse Communications Workers of America union. McKercher also looks at the nationalism of Canadian newsworkers who instead joined an all-Canadian union similar to CWA and explores a case study on an extreme form of labor convergence in Vancouver. She concludes that while labor convergence is a work in progress, it is a promising development for newsworkers and their unions, helping them adjust to change and perhaps expand into new areas of the communication sector." ... The page length shown above is based on a typical 300-word page. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Digital Locker immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

From the author: This study explores the influence of perceptions of organizational control and social attributes on professionalism among radio announcers. The study uses data gathered from a stratified random sample of announcers working in Canada. A multiple-regression analysis revealed language, hierarchical authority, announcing experience, freelance income, and lack of a professional education exerted the most influence on professionalism; this model correctly classified half the announcers by level of professionalism. The findings raise concerns about the applicability of conventional occupation-related concepts to announcing because of the nature of this work--creative, individualized, isolating--and its lure for recruits.
